Trapeze Group Introduces Bus Stop Management Solution

Solution helps to maintain up-to-date inventories of bus stops and their amenities

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, September 19, 2007 —Trapeze Group today announced the availability of a bus stop management solution designed to help transit agencies and other organizations maintain up-to-date inventories of bus stops and their amenities.

Managing bus stop inventory can provide big challenges, especially when stops number in the thousands and resources are limited. Manually recording and updating bus stop information can be inefficient and prone to error, and it can be difficult to share information across the organization. The Trapeze Bus Stop Management™ solution aims to address these challenges.

“When multiple departments need access to accurate bus stop data, it is critical that that data be consistent throughout the organization,” said Mark Miller, chief executive officer, Trapeze Group. “The Trapeze Bus Stop Management solution helps to streamline the process of bus stop data collection and transfer and helps improve the overall accuracy and completeness of stored bus stop information across departments.”

The Trapeze Bus Stop Management solution allows surveyors to geocode locations, record and update amenity lists and attributes, and create work orders for maintenance. As a stand-alone system, part of a larger Trapeze system, or integrated with third-party applications, it helps connect bus stop data with other enterprise systems helping to create a seamless flow of information.

Recognizing that the collection of information on bus stops varies from organization to organization, the solution is also customizable to suit particular needs.

TransIT ridership rising, Walkersville service could expand

More people are riding county buses and vans.

Frederick County TransIT's riderships rose by 9 percent in fiscal 2007, up from last year's 651,306 to 709,701.

The rides reflect one-way passenger trips between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007.

"Frederick is growing in population, and we've made what I call incremental improvements to the services to make them convenient for people to ride," said Sherry C. Burford, director of the Transit Services of Frederick County.

Burford said Friday more people may have been riding TransIT because of rising gas prices. Residents may have found TransIT to be a low-cost alternative.

Ridership has grown every year for the past five years, though it may be slowing down. The previous four years ridership grew by more than 20 percent, so 9 percent is considerably less.

Still, Burford hopes the new numbers will make it possible for TransIT to expand services.

For instance, she hopes to increase the frequency of the Walkersville shuttle, which saw the largest increase in ridership. It increased by 29 percent, from 11,220 to 14,490, between fiscal 2006 and fiscal 2007.

And she hopes the county can offer service in Walkersville on Saturdays, since so many riders have requested it.

Though the ridership numbers have steadily risen, there's no direct correlation between ridership numbers and the amount of federal and state funding the program gets, Burford said.

Most of those funding decisions are based on overall population, though she does use the numbers when applying for flexible money from state agencies.

She is waiting to hear what allocations TransIT will get in fiscal 2008, which started July 1.

Even without new funding, Burford hopes the TransIT program will be able to expand this year.

In June, TransIT bought new scheduling and customer service software which has made it easier and faster to schedule rides for senior citizens and disabled people.

What used to take 18 hours now takes two or three, she said.

The software, Trapeze, actually arranges and produces schedules for 17 different runs per day.

The software cost the county about $70,000 for seven licenses, but Burford said they're already saving money by not filling a position when someone retired because that job is no longer necessary.

TransIT is preparing its annual report on fiscal 2007 and will release detailed information on ridership when it is published in August.

LANSING, Mich., July 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Capital Area
Transportation Authority (CATA) has been named the best transit system of
its size in North America by the American Public Transportation Association
(APTA).
"This is the highest honor in our industry," said Sandy Draggoo, CATA's
CEO/Executive Director. "We couldn't be more excited or proud!" Draggoo
also won the prestigious General Manager of the Year award from APTA in
2003.
CATA was ranked #1 in the competitive 4-30 million passenger trips
category. This category includes 106 transit systems. APTA gives out the
Outstanding Transportation System Achievement Award annually to honor
transit systems demonstrating exceptional efficiency and effectiveness.
Transit systems are judged on services and programs, safety, operations,
customer service, financial management, attendance and employee costs,
advancement of minorities and women, marketing, policy and administration,
and community relations.
"CATA is at the leading edge of transit systems here in Michigan, and
across the nation, with its environmental initiative, innovative
partnerships, and responsive service," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.
"CATA is an integral part of the capital area and this award is a great
honor for CATA and the entire community."
The award will be presented to CATA at the APTA Annual Meeting in
Charlotte, North Carolina on October 9, 2007. This conference brings
together more than 2,000 transit industry professionals from across the
world. CATA was also voted #1 in 1991. No other Michigan transit system can
claim multiple wins as 'America's Best'.
"This award belongs to the dedicated CATA employees who do their work
so well," said CATA Board President Patricia Munshaw. "It also belongs to
those who use our services and to the citizens in our service area. It
recognizes their support through their loyal patronage as customers, as
well as their financial support through local funding. Their investment
maintains a comprehensive service system; deserving of this recognition."
Draggoo surprised employees with the APTA award announcement at a
special employee celebration this morning (July 19) at the CATA
administrative facility in south Lansing. "Our employees work hard to
provide high quality transportation," said Draggoo. "This award recognizes
their hard work, dedication, and most of all, commitment to our customers."
"This is kind of like winning the Emmy. It's the best of the best,"
APTA President William W. Millar said in a videotaped message to Draggoo
and CATA's 300 employees during the celebration. "You won for many reasons,
including your outstanding safety record at CATA, your incredible ridership
growth and your record of service to your customers."
APTA is a nonprofit international association of 1,500 member
organizations, including bus, rapid transit and commuter rail systems. APTA
members serve more than 90 percent of people who use public transportation
in the United States and Canada.
CATA was the also the first public transit system in Michigan to add
full size hybrid buses to its fleet this past year. CATA's 2006 ridership
broke its all-time record -- exceeding 10 million rides in 2006.
Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) Receives
2007 APTA Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award
Every day, seniors, students, commuters, individuals with disabilities,
and others depend on CATA to go wherever life takes them. At its beginning
in 1972, CATA operated 14 bus routes. That year the system provided 750,000
rides. The number of bus routes has more than doubled since then. As the
system grew, CATA added additional services to meet customer needs. In
2005, CATA celebrated breaking the 9-million ride mark. In 2006, passengers
took a record 10 million rides on CATA. Now CATA has been named the
recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement
Award by the American Public Transportation Association.
The Capital Area Transportation Authority provides fixed-route and
demand- response service within Ingham County, Michigan. County residents
number 277,000 and the County spans 560 square miles. The 2000 Census shows
a density of 500 residents per square mile in the county. CATA serves this
area with 30 fixed-routes, operating 7 days a week. CATA operates 24/7 on
the MSU campus during fall and spring terms. CATA offers eight Paratransit
services, including ADA complementary Paratransit, general demand-response
service to the rural communities and same day demand-response service to
four suburban communities. CATA assumed MSU campus transportation services
in August 1999. Michigan State University represents a significant customer
base for CATA with its 46,000 students. CATA is also the regional
coordinator for van and carpool matching services. As of Dec. 31, 2006,
CATA employed 290 individuals, including 215 ATU motor coach operators and
27 ATU employees in maintenance.
This 2007 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award
highlights CATA's toolbox for success: innovation, collaboration,

Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) honors one public
transportation system in North America each year who has demonstrated
outstanding achievement in efficiency and effectiveness. Systems are judged
on their performance over a 3-year period. One system is chosen from each
of four categories; based on passenger trip totals. CATA was ranked first
for 2007 in the 4 - 30 million ride category which includes 106 systems.
The judging panel of transit professionals from across North America,
looks at a system's quantitative measures such as ridership per passenger
mile, number of customer complaints, safety indicators, etc. which compose
up to 2/3 of the total score. Qualitative measures count for 1/3 of the
total score. These include specific programmatic improvements and
achievements in:
-- Safety -- Enhanced safety measures

-- Operations -- Efficiencies in operating procedures

-- Customer Service -- Methods of providing additional value and service
       to riders

-- Financial Management -- Effective financial controls

       administrative techniques

luncheon on October 9, 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

PARTA and Trapeze Awarded ‘United We Ride’ Grant for Regional ITS Project

Coordinated system to help improve transportation services for older Americans and persons with disabilities in Geauga and Portage Counties.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, FEBRUARY 13, 2007 – Trapeze Group today announced the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority (PARTA) in Kent, OH in collaboration with Trapeze Group, Geauga County Transit in Chardon, OH and Kotting Consultants in Kent, OH, a grant to design a Coordinated Regional ITS system to help improve transportation service for older Americans and persons with disabilities.

With the support of Ohio Congressmen Tim Ryan, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, local human service and emergency management agencies, the project involves designing a central Travel Management Coordination Center (TMCC) using new transportation management technology designed specifically to coordinate these regional agencies.

“Our proposed TMCC is to be a state-of-the-art, centralized call center serving as a convenient access point for all consumers who require transportation, trip planning, real-time traveler information, and automatic trip reservations,” said Bryan Smith, manager of Business Development for PARTA. “The proposed technology foundation includes advanced ITS technology from Trapeze such as interactive voice response (IVR), trip requests via the Internet, online trip planning and more.”
Real-time management of coordinated resources using ITS technology can allow for significant cost savings to all parties involved. Human service agencies can use ITS technology to have their trips automatically brokered to transportation providers for transporting passengers in the most cost efficient manner. The system is designed to reduce barriers to employment, training, health care and society in general. All groups, including consumers, will have an opportunity to become involved in the system design through individual and group meetings and updates on the project website.

Commented Kristina Fenselon, director of Geauga County Transit: “To succeed with this project we want to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by prior work in Portage and Geauga counties, significant local interest in coordinated service delivery and cutting-edge ITS technologies. Our goal is to find a way to curb rising transportation costs by sharing resources but still deliver the best service possible to Ohio residents with special needs.”

The project consists of two phases; system design and model deployment. At the end of Phase 1, the DOT will evaluate the project and determine eligibility for deployment funding in Phase 2. Phase 1 of the project begins with a two day kick-off meeting in Washington, DC on March 19th, 2007.
Trapeze Group Introduces Video Route Driver Training System

Solution helps to improve the passenger experience and drive down operational costs.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, January 26, 2007 — Trapeze Group today announced the availability of a video route driver training system called Trapeze VRT designed to improve the passenger experience and help transit agencies decrease operational costs.

Using recorded route footage combined with mapping and audio training commentary, Trapeze VRT facilitates route learning for new drivers as well as existing drivers who need to cover new routes on short notice. All three elements are displayed to the driver via a standard PC allowing the driver to interact with the program as per his or her training requirement.

Drivers can study routes or particular difficult sections, improving their route knowledge and hazard awareness before getting behind the wheel. Should any of the routes change or detours occur; new information can be relayed to the drivers quickly and easily.

The solution can also be extended to provide in-vehicle training by measuring the acceleration, braking, fuel consumption and speed of drivers compared with the results of an ‘expert’ driver.

“By analyzing driving patterns and teaching fuel efficient driving techniques transit agencies can not only decrease fuel costs but also improve the passenger experience through a smoother, less jerky and more passenger friendly journey,” said Mark Miller, chief executive officer, Trapeze Group.

The VRT system is already in use at several transportation organizations across the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Agencies interested in a demonstration of the technology or learning more about Trapeze solutions should contact their account manager or visit www.trapezegroup.com. Free educational Webinars on the video driver route training system will commence in February 2007.

Saskatoon Transit Selects Trapeze Operations Management Solution

Agency to Provide Workforce with Self-Service Access to Information via Web & IVR.

Mississauga, Ontario, January 3, 2007 – Trapeze Group today announced that it will supply Saskatoon Transit with a software solution that will automate and integrate a number of essential functions in the transit authority’s operations division.

The proposed solution includes functionality that enables employee sign ups, dispatching of daily activities, timekeeping, yard management and workforce management.

Trapeze will provide Saskatoon Transit with Web and IVR (interactive voice response) modules to enable enhanced employee communication. The Web module will provide employees with secure access to their operational and timekeeping data. The IVR module will permit employees to call an automated voice system to receive updates about upcoming work assignments.

“The new Trapeze system will enable us to better manage our workforce of more than 310 people, including fixed route, paratransit, maintenance and general office staff,” said Jeff Balon, transit manager at Saskatoon Transit. “By better managing our operations and more effectively communicating with employees, we can ultimately deliver superior service to our riders. We believe the Trapeze solution will help us achieve those goals.”

Saskatoon Transit will also implement automated sign-in terminals integrated with the core operations management system. Operators will automatically receive work and vehicle assignment information upon signing in. Dispatchers will be able to work with tools and data to help ensure the timely provision of scheduled services.

The core operations management software will also be extended with enhanced workforce management modules that support employee appraisals as well as complex accrual management.

Integrated with the operations management solution will be a customer feedback system, which enables commendations and complaints from customers to be associated with employee and daily dispatch information and tracked through to resolution.

The solution will be integrated with Saskatoon’s other Trapeze products, which include a fixed route scheduling system, a paratransit scheduling and dispatch system, and a customer information solution that includes Web-based and IVR information. All components of the enterprise solution share a common database, which helps enable seamless information flow and more efficient data management.

Implementation of the operations management solution will begin early in 2007.

Trapeze Group Strengthens Commitment to End-to-End Intelligent Transportation Systems

Creates new Mobile Hardware & Communications Division; Integrates existing product and ITS development teams.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, November 9, 2006 — Trapeze Group today announced the strengthening of the company’s commitment to providing end-to-end intelligent transportation systems (ITS) through the creation of a new Mobile Hardware & Communications division and the integration of the company’s existing product development and ITS development teams. The changes are designed to further enhance Trapeze’s enterprise offering in the demand response and fixed route sectors.

“We are committed to delivering tightly coupled, customer-centric end-to-end intelligent transportation systems,” said Rick Bacchus, president, Trapeze Group. “The changes we are announcing today will further help agencies benefit from a seamless flow of information to and from vehicles, back office systems and management information systems.”

The new Mobile Hardware & Communications Division will focus on integrating Trapeze products with third-party hardware and software and deliver complete end-to-end solutions including the communications infrastructure required to make this happen. The division will be headed by Jeff Coil, an ITS architect with more than 12 years of design engineering experience in hardware, software, and systems.

Coil’s expertise includes network infrastructures, advanced radio communications systems, software interfaces, private wireless data networks, requirements analysis, traveler information systems, on-board vehicle computer systems, and bus rapid transit systems. He is also one of the inventors of a multiple communications controller patent designed to control real-time wireless data for local governments.

In other news, Trapeze also announced that Greg Tomsic, General Manager of the Trapeze ITS Division, has decided to retire. Commented Tomsic, “After nearly 20 years in this business I am happy to announce my retirement knowing that I have contributed to Trapeze’s success in delivering cost-effective, integrated end-to-end ITS systems for the fixed route and demand response sectors.”

“We appreciate the significant contribution that Greg has made to the company,” said Bacchus. “His hard work and dedication has helped Trapeze build a strong foundation for delivering an integrated end-to-end ITS solution. We wish Greg well in his retirement.”

Trapeze in the News - Get real: Examining special education transportation.

Published in the September 2006 Edition of School Transportation News Article by Clint Rooley.

Get real: Examining special education transportation. Published in the September 2006 Edition of School Transportation News Article by Clint Rooley, Trapeze Group (Reprinted with permission).

Special education transport is complex, often inefficient and always expensive. Schools and school districts have struggled with special education transport for decades and yet not much has changed in available software to accommodate the needs.

School districts and transport providers have made do with regular transportation software packages for years. There’s just one problem. Traditional transport software doesn’t address the unique needs of transporting students with disabilities.

The reason is actually pretty simple. It just wasn’t designed for it.

Current systems were built to create a set of routes based on relatively static data. Whereas, regular school transportation routes and population changes often undergo very few changes, special needs routes change daily – sometimes even hourly – and variances in the student population happen more often.

Unfortunately standard, home-to-school software applications just weren’t designed to respond and manage service with many variables happening in real time. On average, the cost for each special needs student is five to ten times more than that spent on regular school transport. So does being ‘cost-effective’ and ‘responsive’ have to be mutually exclusive?

Not anymore. Once you understand that providing safe, efficient special education transport involves solving operational issues on a daily basis, the answer is pretty obvious.

An operational based software system must be able to solve a host of problems, none of which have been addressed to date in current systems. The system must be able to:

Track and report the complete history of a student, including student movement, program changes, and transportation changes.

Manage student and school calendars and be able to make optimal route changes in the present and future.

Leverage a proven demand response scheduling algorithm to address the many variables inherent in special education transport.

Accommodate the changes in the student’s actual home address, from Mom’s to Dad’s to Grandma’s to alternate care facilities and do this on a calendar basis.

Perform automatic and efficient route changes based on variations in calendars and addresses.

And when you weave real time technology into a special needs software system that is specifically designed to manage demand response routing for a highly mobile population – like students with disabilities -- and combine it with student information and parent notifications... well, the possibilities become even greater.

Now dispatchers can adjust special education transportation services in real time, as needed, and respond to events. Real time information is automatically incorporated into back-office systems that trigger such services as IVR (interactive voice response) technologies, which calls parents to inform them of bus status, delays and any potential route changes in real time. Now that’s powerful.

And it’s more efficient. The result is cost savings with improved performance and safety based on real time data.

So maybe it’s time to take a look at your current transportation software. Is it really responsive to the ever changing needs of special education transportation? Maybe it’s time to ‘get real’ and think about how current software systems need to change and how real time technologies can improve your processes.
