Travelling reaches another level of fun if there are opportunities for camping. There is nothing more exciting than staying in a tent in the middle of a jungle or on a hill thousands of feet above the ground. Here are 5 places in Bangladesh where you can get the best experience of camping outdoor.

THANCHI

Thanchi is not a exact spot, rather it’s a place, where there are some of the perfect camping sites in the country. 3500 feet above the sea level, it’s an area in the Chittagong district. The zigzag uphill roads, the vast greenery and the snow white clouds floating around blend together to create such a beauty which is hard to put in words.

Amiakhum waterfall, Nafakhum waterfall and Debtakhum are great choices for camping over there. There are lots of other sites in Thanchi to visit as well. The deeper you go into the hills, the new beauties of the nature unfolds. In these deep jungles of Bandarban, any site which is permissible to go, will also be perfect for camping.

Location of Thanchi on google maps 21.8189532,92.4242018

MONPURA & NIJHUM DWIP

In the southern region of Bangladesh these are two islands in the Bay of Bengal. Although situated in two different districts, they are not far from each other (10 km).

The two islands are very secluded and yet the safest places in the country for camping. Anywhere you wish, you can set up a camp. Within the Nijhum Dwip there is forest area where deer are sighted sometimes. Overall these two islands are ideal for camping near the ocean.

Location of Monpura Island on google maps 22.2897209,90.9649904

MOHAMAYA LAKE

The 2nd largest artificial lake of Bangladesh, Mahamaya Lake is spread across 11 sq. km area. The location of the lake is at Mirsharai of Chittagong.

There is opportunity for camping near the lake, but the authority has to be informed beforehand. Just beside the lake there is a waterfall, a shower under it will refresh the body and mind. Other activities here include Kayaking, Campfire, Bar-b-que etc.
Note: Women are not allowed to stay overnight in the camp.

SATCHARI NATIONAL PARK

Situated in the Habiganj District of Sylhet, Satchari National Park is one of the largest wildlife sanctuary of Bangladesh. There are 7 water streams in the forest, from which the name “Satchari” originated. The total area of the forest is 600 acres. It is a perfect place for camping as well as photography.

The greatest downside of this place is the lack of security here. Recently the number of crimes committed mostly by the local hoodlums has spiked. Thus the popularity of this place has dropped eventually.

Location on google maps 24.1258732,91.4410622

REMA-KALENGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Rema & Kalenga are two separate forests, but not distant from each other. Situated in the Habiganj district of Sylhet, it can be a good alternative to Satchari National Park. It’s home to many indigenous tribes such as Tripura, Munda and Oraw.

Other than Camping, this place is also perfect for Trekking. The forests are very deep and shelters a huge variety of animals, some of them are very rare species.

Location on google maps 24.1174297,91.630172

When we talk about ancient civilizations, the Indian subcontinent is a hotspot for priceless sites of archaeological remains. One such 2500 years old ancient city is Pundranagar, which once was a prosperous city of the ancient Bengal. Its ruins were found in the Mahasthangar village of Bogra district in Bangladesh.

I was lucky to witness the leftovers of early human history with my own eyes during my recent visit to Bogra for a friend’s wedding ceremony.

EXPLORING MAHASTHANGAR

Starting off from Sylhet, I reached Bogra city very early in the morning and checked in a hotel named 71 Abashik Hotel. Two of my friends Kawser and Offee, who came from Dhaka, were already there. Ashik, whose home is an hour’s drive from Bogra, joined us later that day.

The first day was all about the wedding & exploring the city and its food. I’ve written another blog specifically dedicated to Bogra city and its foods.

It was the day after that when we spent the whole day at Mahasthangar.

Mahasthan is the name of the area where the remains of the ancient city of Pundrangar were found. It’s almost 12 km away from Bogra city to the north, on the western bank of the river Karatoya. Scattered around a vast area of a 5-6 km radius, many sights of archaeological importance have been discovered after multiple excavations between the 19th – 20th century.

From Sathmatha point of the city, we took a battery-driven auto-rickshaw to Matidali point (or Biman Mor), from where we had to take a CNG auto-rickshaw to reach Mohasthangar.

Although it took only 20 mins, the road was extremely risky. Due to the construction works of the Dhaka-Rangpur highway, there were no visible or distinguishable lanes. Everyone was driving everywhere. Hopefully, the construction will be over within a year or two.

Shrine of Hazrat Shah Sultan Mahmud Balkhi

Just beside the highway at Mahasthangar, there is an age-old mosque and a shrine that is believed to be of Shah Sultan Mahmud Balkhi. This is where the CNG auto-rickshaw dropped us off.

Shah Sultan was a Muslim saint and an Islam preacher. Historically, he arrived in Pundranagar during the 13th century, when the city was mostly populated with Hindus and Buddhists. Legends say, he crossed the Karatoya river on a fish-shaped boat along with his companions. Later he was able to defeat the ruler of that time, king Parshuram and took over the control of Pundranagar.

The shrine of Shah Sultan is on a hill, and beside it lies the beautiful old mosque. The whole premises is full of Fakirs, who seem to have made themselves at home in this shrine. With red & black clothes, bracelets, and weird-looking ornaments on the neck and arms, they are indeed the most interesting characters in this place.

All they do here is – eat foods brought by the worshippers, do drugs (mostly pots), and chill. These Fakirs have a strong community in this area. They can easily be provoked, so we tried to maintain a fair distance from them.

Initially, while trying to set up the gimbal and the go-pro camera, I took a video of these Fakirs chilling (and potting) under a massive Banyan tree. They did not seem very happy about me filming them and gave me a cold look. It was then that I realized it was never a good idea to film them, so I moved away from them.

We asked the locals about the traditions of the shrine and came to know that a festival is held every year when Fakirs and visitors from all over the country gather here. Other than that, every Friday people come here with their newborns to feed them their first rice. Many Muslims donate to the shrine’s fund with the hope that their wishes will be fulfilled.

TRANSPORT, ACCOMMODATIONS, COSTS, SCHEDULES OF OPENING AND OTHER INFORMATION

Dhaka-Bogra-Dhaka by Bus

Both from the Gabtoli and Mohakhali bus stand in Dhaka, regular bus service is available to Bogra. While returning, bus tickets can be bought from Satmatha point, or the Thanthania bus stand of Bogra city. The fare varies with types of bus and companies.

Bus fare
For non-AC buses: BDT 400-550
For AC coaches: BDT 800-1200

It usually takes 5 hours approximately to reach Bogra city from Dhaka. The most popular bus services on this route are –

It was a full moon of late autumn.

Gentle breeze was blowing down the hill side and thin clouds were hanging around on their way to casual fly. Dimmed through the clouds, silver moon light was rolling down the folds and slopes.

Getting out of the cottage I walked to the end of the hills and looked around. I felt like I was standing on the top of the world at my feet. This is what Nilgiri Bangladesh really is. You have to stay at Bandarban hotel and next day you can move to Nilgiri. On way you may have a round on Meghla Tourist Spot near Bandarban city. Spend one or two nights at Nil Giri and then return with a night stay at Bandarban. The accommodation in Nilgiri, in fact, makes its difference. Good hotels are there at Bandarban city too. .

Last January we four friends arranged a tour to Sunderban leaving aside our busy days. Our plan was formatted within a very short time. One public holiday was there near to the weekly one and we used the opportunity to cover a four day tour. As incidentally I am of Khulna origin so we choked up an economy plan. We started from Dhaka at evening from air port train station to get the essence of a journey by train. Reaching to Khulna in the morning we came to our home to be fresh and got breakfast. Earlier I contacted Shahin a photo journalist and associated with forest dept for their video coverage to manage permission for Sunderban entry. Due to his position he could easily manage the permission with one step ahead to make the voyage by using one forest launch MV BONOMALI.

Our passion and the supporting environment were running parallel. The forest launch was destined for a three day night voyage particularly for a team from Dhaka university botany dept. They were to conduct some experiments on the mangrove forest, salinity and the harmful affect on the forest itself. We were not concerned with the science but the scientist was surely adorable to us for his generosity to allow us to be in the ship. There were two forest guards with fire arms, one chef with his assistant, Shahin the photographer, the Sareng (captain) and we four friends. Boat started just at 11.00 AM.

Dhangmari , the gate way of Sunderban

All the way we had been enjoying the panorama and once it reached the gate way of Sunderban named Dhangmari we discovered a serene beauty what we never witnessed. I can only compare the beauty as heavenly as none is there parallel I saw before. Scientist forgot his assignment, we forgot to talk to each other and even express the cheering. The boat with low noise slowly was advancing slitting the calm water of the river. Ripples were spreading towards the bank making an angular shape. Reflecting the golden focus of sun set from calm water of the river. We are speechless.

Monkeys are tearing leaves and deers are taking, so glamorous!

Suddenly some noise and Shahin’s call brought us in the worldly surroundings. Shahin guided and we also looked at the bank and found so many monkeys on trees and some deer less in number to the monkeys, wow! We didn’t expect so early we would find deer. The boat slowly moves and caused no disturb to them. What we read in our boyhood that we saw, monkeys tearing leaves and deer are taking, so glamorous. Mean time it was evening. Scientist asked the guide the area where he wants to get down to find samples of the trees dyeing. Is this only salinity or other root cause there, this is his subject for experiment. No harm, let him do for the forest and let us enjoy the forest.

Dacoits are more dangerous than tigers in jungle

Boat anchored at one convenient and safe area. Guide told us dacoits are more dangerous than tigers in jungle. This added a double climax on our thoughts. They affirmed us that robbers don’t come to forest boat and more over we are gunned so no risk there. We carried from Khulna enough snacks and the food stuffs to cook. Chef prepared tea and offered with snacks and started cooking for supper. This forest boats are very modern equipped with beautiful cabins, freezer, electricity etc. We enjoyed the moonlit night sitting on the deck and the nocturnal beauty of the forest, a huge mystery in side.

Meeting with the Royal Bengal Tiger

We were not feeling to go for sleeping rather sitting on the deck the gentle breeze just covered us with a calm and cool sense of comfort. At around 2 o’clock mid night we buzzed, let’s go for sleeping as tomorrow will be the day to explore more of the jungle mystery. Suddenly we got a bad smell in the air. I knew this odor only comes from the majestic tiger. I told my friends and kept them vigilant into the jungle. We heard a sound like chasing or rush in the darkness of the jungle and within a minute before taking the second breath we saw what we use to see in animal planet channel. The bore just rushed out to the river bank and in split of a second the Royal Bengal Tiger jumped out to catch him by neck and fled into the dark jungle. Still the dragging sound remained for some seconds while the gorgeous animal disappeared with his prey.

This is merely a luck to find a tiger in the forest safely. The honey collectors (moual) and the axe men (bawali) they do not want to see the tiger as there happens regularly sad killing of these professionals by the jungle protectors the tigers. We were over there for next two days and enjoyed the serene beauty from top to the bottom but we fulfilled our bag on the very first night only.

Idea for travellers who want to visit Sunderbans

Now for those who want to visit Sunderban may have some idea for conducting a journey. You could contact BPC (Bangladesh Porjoton Corporation) and can find from there so many package tour agents and deal with them for a package tour. Other option is to go to Khulna by bus or train, then to get permission from forest office. There are boats destined from Khulna also but going to Mongla from there also small launch available for the guided tour.

Ever thought of visiting a beach that never ends?

Where cliffs tower up here and there, waves come crashing into you and you could shop for handmade clothes or enjoy mouthwatering seafood? All these things come in one great package; Cox’s Bazaar! Cox’s bazar sea beach!

Let me take you there through this article!

Cox’s bazar sea beach is nearly 150 km away from the port district Chittagong. You could take a flight to Cox’s bazaar or you could take a direct luxurious bus to your destination from the capital Dhaka. There are several very luxurious bus services you could take and this is the most convenient way to go there as flights might not be available all the time. Moreover what adds to your advantage is that you would not need to change transport. It should take about 9 hours to reach there by bus.

Please don’t get bored just to see the duration of the journey because you would not get the chance to get bored while you are travelling. The countryside might be more beautiful than most of the places you have visited before; take full advantage of the journey and enjoy it. The part from Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar is likely to take your breath away as the road twists around hills and forest going upwards and downwards. There’s no need to be afraid, the journey is as safe as any you have encountered!

Hold your breath as your bus enters the town, the road slopes down and you would suddenly see the sea. For a moment or two you might find yourself wishing that the bus goes on right into the cox’s bazar sea beach but sadly it will turn right! It is recommended to make a reservation in a hotel in advance during the winter as walk-ins could be hard to find in quality hotels and motels. Don’t waste your time, freshen up and go out there. Admire the beauty of the longest beach of the world. There is a small problem if you are a foreign visitor. The locals might show interest in more than you would like. There is a workaround, an exciting and beautiful workaround!

Take a ride and go about 32 km south of the town, you are likely to find Inani beach, where golden sand goes on for about 100 miles unbroken! The bay of Bengal in front of your eyes, you standing on golden sand and steep hills before your eyes if you turn around; what more could you want? Yes there could be one more thing that you would like; a stream! Don’t be surprised when I say there is small fountain that comes down the hills in walking distance. Yes this is Cox’s Bazar! the complete package! The inani sea beach near cox’s bazar sea beach is much less crowded and ideal for sea baths and perhaps a picnic.

This is just a part of things you could do here. There is more to come!

Jaintiapur is one of the prime tourist attraction spots of Sylhet. A visit to this place is a worthwhile experience.

It is located 43 kilometers from the Sylhet town and only 5 kilometers from Jaflong, on the Sylhet- shilong road.

In ancient times it used to be the capital of the kingdom Jaintia comprising of Jaintia and Khasia hills and the plains of Jaintia.

The kings used to live here in palaces. The 18th century kingdom has disappeared long back living behind their architectural excellence to be cherished by the people of this era. Although the ruins of the kingdom are scattered over the whole area, they are enough to express the lavish life lead by the royal families of that time.

The most favorite destination among all these ruins would be the Jaintiapur Rajbari (king’s house). Apart from this there is a sun-clock in the vicinity of the Rajbari which reflects the scientific knowledge of then people.

Undoubtedly Jaintiapur was a beautiful region once. And with proper preservation of the ruins discovered, it could still execute its real royal beauty. But unfortunately, due to lack of proper preservation 0much of these like some parts of the rajbari is in a dilapidated condition but it still attracts many of the tourists every year.

Jaintiapur is now a well known picnic spot. Picnic parties from far and across come to visit this place. If you are thinking about visiting this place it would be wise to visit both Jaintiapur and Jaflong (which is only 5 kilometers from Jaintiapur) in the same day.

Traveling :

It is easy to travel here from the Sylhet town. Taking a local bus or car will serve the purpose well. It takes about an hour and half to reach here.

Accommodation :

As it is close to Sylhet town visitors visit this place in the day time and return to the hotels in the town for night stay. Besides the accommodation facilities here have not yet developed much.

Jaintiapur ruins exhibit the rich history of the country and it’s rulers. The glimpse of the ruins here gives really an amazing feeling. You should not miss the chance of touring here.

The park is home to a large diversity of about 460 species among which 167 are plants, 4 amphibian species, 6 reptile species, 246 bird species and 20 mammal species. Bee-eater owls, parrots are found here. So for bird watchers it is a must to visit this place.

Hoolock gibbons, highly endangered in Bangladesh, are also seen here jumping from one tree to another. Leopards, deer, wild chicken, wild bore, squirrel, python, even king cobra are among the other inhabitants of this forest. Besides these animals one rare type of Chloroform tree of Asia is found here.

Visitors can enjoy hiking and walking to indulge themselves in the nature close to the wildlife using the numerous trails in the forest.

The hill tops of this forest are the home for different tribal peoples. Khasias and Manipuris are the main inhabitants here. Tourists can visit these tribes to get acquainted to their customs and traditions. Manipuri dance is one of the must-see features of this area. Manipuris are also famous for their traditional weaving. Their handicrafts, shawls, saree, bags, bed covers etc can be bought from local markets. Khasia’s on the other hand are well known for betel leaf cultivation.

Traveling:

Taking a bus from Sylhet town may take you to the destination in or about 2hours. Or one can manage to go from Srimangal also. It will take 3.5hours to reach Srimangal from Dhaka and a few minutes from there to the forest. Train service from Dhaka to Srimangal is also available.

Accommodation:

Visitors can spend their nights in hotels, bungalows or resorts in Srimangal.
