Southwest

In recent years, the airport has become dominated by Southwest Airlines flights, with Southwest's market share at approximately 30.7 percent as of summer 2009, over 2 percent higher than December 2008. Southwest services seven of Tampa's top ten markets: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, Ft. Lauderdale, and Indianapolis. Southwest flies near one other city on the list: Boston (nearby to Providence, Rhode Island, and it is just beginning limited service to Boston's Logan Airport).

Delta

There is a big gap between Southwest and second-place Delta Airlines at 12.6 percent of the airport's market share, a number almost 2 percent lower than December 2008. Delta services all of the top markets but likely dominates Tampa's routes to New York (LaGuardia Airport) and Atlanta. Delta's acquisition of Northwest Airlines may add to its Tampa market share, particularly in the Tampa-Detroit route. Evidence of Delta's dominance, particularly among business travelers, is the Sky Club, which remains open in Tampa International Airport's Airside E (near Gate 67).

US Airways

The remaining airport market share is much closer than that of first and second place. In third place is US Airways at 10 percent. US Airways maintains its club lounge in Airside F, near Gate 85, indicating that, like Delta, the airline is still popular among business travelers. US Airways would likely dominate in the Tampa-Philadelphia route, the US Airways hub.

Other Airlines

To round out the rest of the list of Tampa International Airport's market share by airline, American and AirTran are both at nearly 8 percent, Northwest is at just over 7 percent (soon to be incorporated into Delta), Continental is at just under 7 percent, and United is number ten at 5.5 percent.

While lower on Tampa's market share list, many of these airlines serve one of the city's top routes and would compete with Delta and Southwest for those routes. United has hubs in Chicago and Washington, D.C. (Dulles Airport); AirTran's hub is in Atlanta, like Delta's; Northwest has a hub in Detroit; Continental is strong in the New York/Newark Airport route as well as in the Ft. Lauderdale route.

One of the most unique restaurants in Tampa is world-famous Bern's Steak House. While steakhouses are popular in Tampa, none are quite like Bern's, which boasts a separate dessert room and a wine cellar with 500,000 bottles. Bern's is a destination for many while in Tampa, but if you are planning a trip and would like to visit Bern's, be sure to make a reservation. Keep in mind that it is a bit farther from the airport at approximately eight miles away (1208 South Howard Avenue), but it is still an easy cab ride or drive.

Care to dine with a view? Try one of two waterfront hotel restaurants: Armani's at the Grand Hyatt Tampa (2900 Bayport Drive) or Aquaknox at the Westin Tampa Bay (7627 West Courtney Campbell Causeway). These restaurants are more than just the convenient options for hotel guests; both offer appealing menus with unbeatable ambiance.

The bulk of the remaining restaurant options near the airport are centered near International Plaza, Westshore Boulevard/Boy Scout Boulevard, or WestShore Plaza.

International Plaza

Several upscale dining options are located in International Plaza's Bay Street area, including The Capital Grille, the steakhouse chain with a lengthy wine menu. Ocean Prime claims to be a modern-day supper club, and serves seafood and creative cocktails.

The Renaissance Tampa Hotel International Plaza, located at the International Plaza, has an Italian/Mediterranean restaurant named Pelagia Trattoria.

Boy Scout Boulevard/Westshore Boulevard

Located at 4342 West Boy Scout Boulevard is Roy's, known for its fresh seafood which is flown in from as far away as Hawaii every day. Two other steakhouses are also located in this area: Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar at 4322 West Boy Scout Boulevard and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse at 1700 North Westshore Boulevard.

WestShore Plaza

Located at the intersection of Westshore Boulevard and Kennedy Boulevard, this plaza competes in some ways with International Plaza, including for diners. The high-end dining choices at Westshore Plaza are the Palm Restaurant, serving steak and seafood cooked in an Italian tradition, and Mitchell's Fish Market, which offers local and imported fresh seafood.

The most convenient option is to stay within the airport property at the Tampa Airport Marriott, 4200 George J Bean Parkway (airport entrance road). If driving to the hotel, follow signs to the hotel's entrance; the hotel also can be accessed from the Landside area. The hotel boasts soundproof windows to make you forget you are at an airport and a revolving restaurant, The View at CK's.

At the top of the price point are the waterfront (bay front) properties: The Westin Tampa Bay, 7627 West Courtney Campbell Causeway, and the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, 2900 Bayport Drive. The Westin opened in 2009 and became stiff competition for the Grand Hyatt, previously the only high-end, bay front location. Both locations are removed from shopping or entertainment but have the air of resorts, albeit near the highway. Both have well-regarded high-end restaurants in the hotel: the Aquaknox at the Westin and Armani's at the Grand Hyatt. To reach these properties from the airport, exit and follow signs to Clearwater/Route 60 West/Courtney Campbell Causeway. They are an easy drive or cab ride away, about 10 minutes from the airport parking lots (in no traffic).

For those looking for high-end but more centrally located, try the Renaissance Tampa Hotel International Plaza. Located in the International Plaza mall (4200 Jim Walter Blvd), the hotel has easy access to shops and dining and is just minutes away from the airport. To drive to the hotel, follow signs to Spruce Street from the airport exit.

There are a number of nearby hotels that combine location, lower rates, and frequent stay comforts such as free high-speed Internet). All are near the International Plaza mall.

Located off Spruce Street are three suite-type hotels, each of which opened in 2008 or 2009.

The TownePlace Suites Tampa Airport, 5302 Avion Park Drive, offers full kitchens in all rooms and a "Grab-n-Go Breakfast."

Hilton Garden Inn, 5312 Avion Park Drive, has in-room refrigerators and microwaves.

Homewood Suites, 5325 Avion Park Drive, provides full kitchens and complimentary breakfasts to guests.

Farther down Spruce Street, which turns into Boy Scout Boulevard, are two other suite hotels.

Hyatt Place Tampa Airport/Westshore, 4811 West Main Street (off Westshore Boulevard), provides complimentary continental breakfast and in-room refrigerators to all guests.

The Residence Inn Tampa Airport/Westshore, 4312 W. Boy Scout Boulevard, has fully equipped kitchens and buffet breakfast for guests.

The closest entertainment near Tampa International Airport is International Plaza, an upscale mall with dozens of restaurant options, some of which offer outdoor dining. International Plaza is located on Boy Scout Boulevard at Westshore Boulevard.

For those looking for a little more entertainment with their shopping, 5 miles south on Westshore Boulevard (at Kennedy Boulevard) is another mall: Westshore Plaza. Westshore Plaza has a movie theater, the AMC 14 Theatres, located on the mall's second floor.

Sports

There are many golf courses in Tampa, and the public course closest to Tampa International Airport is the Rocky Point Golf Course. Located at 4151 Dana Shores Drive, the course is a 15-minute drive from the airport. Don't forget your clubs!

Nearby seasonal entertainment for the sports fan includes the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play at Raymond James Stadium (three miles away at 4201 Dale Mabry Highway North) from September to January each year. Just up Dale Mabry, less than a mile from Raymond James Stadium at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, is George M. Steinbrenner Field (formerly Legends Field). The field is where the New York Yankees host spring training from February through April each year, with practices and games open to the public (after ticket purchase). The Tampa Yankees (Single A team) use the field from April to September.

If cooling off is more your style, the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning play, from October through April, 10 miles away in downtown Tampa. The Tampa Bay Rays (professional baseball) play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, 21 miles each way from the airport.

Short Drives Away

Channelside, a shopping and entertainment area on the edge of Tampa's downtown, has several bars and restaurants and an IMAX theater. It is located 10 miles away from the airport at 615 Channelside Drive.

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is located at 5223 North Orient Road, just off Interstate 4 (I-4) at the eastern edge of Tampa. The casino provides 150,000 square feet of casino, nightclub, and bar space. It is a 15-mile drive, each way, from the airport.

People staying a day or two might consider driving across the Courtney Campbell Causeway/Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard to Clearwater Beach. It is a 22-mile drive (each way), but why visit Florida without going to the beach?! Known for its fine white sand, Clearwater is one of the Gulf Coast's premier beaches.

Rocky Point

For those wishing to experience the local setting, there are a handful of nearby restaurants with views of the waterfront. Bahama Breeze (3045 North Rocky Point Drive East) is a Caribbean restaurant and after-work social destination. For strictly seafood, there's Landry's Seafood House (7616 West Courtney Campbell Causeway), The Rusty Pelican (2425 North Rocky Point Drive), and Crabby Bill's Seafood (7700 West Courtney Campbell Causeway). For a more casual bar environment, try Whiskey Joe's Bar and Grill (7720 West Courtney Campbell Causeway).

International Plaza

Approximately three miles away from Tampa International Airport is International Plaza, an upscale mall with plenty of dining choices. Options contained within the mall include the Plaza's food court, Nordstrom Bistro, and nearby California Pizza Kitchen.

International Plaza also has an indoor/outdoor area called Bay Street, which consists of restaurants and shops. The options at Bay Street include upscale bars Bar Louie and Blue Martini, and the wine bistro The Grape. More standard bar food can be found at Champps Restaurant and Bar. Casual sandwich restaurants include Earl of Sandwich and Toojay's Deli, with broader American bistro menus at the Cheesecake Factory and Gallery Bistro. Ethnic dining choices include the Japanese and sushi restaurant Café Japon and the Italian Brio Tuscan Grille (opening September 2009).

Boy Scout Boulevard

Across from International Plaza at nearby 4302 West Boy Scout Boulevard is Lee Roy Selmon's, a casual, sit-down restaurant in the style of a smokehouse, offering barbeque and Southern fare.

WestShore Plaza

Less than five miles south of the airport on Westshore Boulevard (at Kennedy Boulevard) is WestShore Plaza, which also has a food court and several mid-priced, sit-down restaurants, including: P.F. Chang's China Bistro, offering Asian entrees, and Maggiano's Little Italy, offering family-sized portions in a large, open setting.

Tampa International Airport has a long-term parking garage next to the main Landside terminal. The garage is free for the first hour and costs $1.00 for every 20 minutes thereafter, up to $15.00 for each 24 hours. The monorail access to the terminal is located on Level 5, and the pedestrian walkways to the terminal are located on Level 2. Parking information may be heard on 1601AM within a three-mile radius of the airport.

The economy parking garage is located next to the United State Post Office on Bessie Coleman Boulevard. The turn from the main airport entrance road is well-marked. The lot was recently rebuilt as a six-story garage--gone are the days of returning from a trip to a sun-baked car. The garage costs $1.00 for each 20-minute interval, up to a maximum of $9.00 for each 24 hours. Shuttles run to the main terminal every 7 to 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, from designated pick-up/drop-off areas.

SunPass, Florida's prepaid highway toll program, is now accepted as payment at all Tampa International Airport parking facilities for travelers who are already SunPass customers. Use the designated lanes to exit and pay, the same as you would on a toll road.

Vehicles parked in Tampa International Airport's parking facilities for longer than 45 days will be impounded.

Off-Site

There are two primary off-site long-term parking options, both of which are within two miles of the airport and provide shuttle buses back to the main terminal.

A-1 Express Services Airport Parking 5105 West Cypress Street

The A-1 lot costs $10.50 for 24 hours and $63.00 for seven days. Both rates include a $3.00 convenience fee for making reservations on the website.

Payless Parking 1965 North Westshore Boulevard

Payless costs $7.76 for a 24-hour stay and $54.30 for seven days. Both rates include taxes. It also offers online reservations.

Unlike off-site airport parking in many other cities, off-site parking may not be a suitable alternative at Tampa International Airport. For one reason, during rush hours the traffic and road construction near the airport could make driving to these lots, and then riding the shuttles, time-consuming. Second, now that the airport's economy garage provides covered spaces (and plenty of them), as compared to the open off-site lots, it is certainly worth a slight rate premium.

To access the network, allow your laptop to automatically detect the airport's Wi-Fi. Select it from the list of available networks. Once you open a browser window you will see the terms and conditions page. Reading and accepting the terms are required prior to browsing to other web pages.

The brochure contains additional steps and troubleshooting assistance if this does not result in a connection. Public wireless networks are not as secure as private networks, so the use of firewall and/or antivirus software is recommended.

Airline Club Wi-Fi

Although Tampa International Airport is one of the few airports with plenty of available and relatively comfortable seating, there are also the following lounges for those looking for some additional comfort while using the Internet.

Delta Sky Club: Airside E, near Gate 67.

USAirways Club: Airside F, near Gate 85.

Club access requirements vary by airline, but those traveling first class and/or with elite/premium frequent flyer status generally can enter that airline's club. Some airlines, including those in the Star Alliance or SkyTeam, offer reciprocal access to each other's clubs. Other airlines may sell one-day lounge passes for a fee.

Keep in mind that each airside has its own security lines, meaning that using the club in one airside when your flight is in another airside would require clearing security twice. This would not normally be an issue in Tampa during non-peak travel hours, but the airport can get busy during rush hours.

Business Center

Those travelers needing more than just an Internet connection can use the airport's Business Center, located in Airside A between Gates 9 and 10. Individual workstations, printers, fax machines, and photocopiers are available at these areas, in addition to internet access. Fees apply. Unfortunately, Airside A is not Tampa's busiest airside, particularly for business travel. Think you smell cigarette smoke? That could be because the business center is located in what used to be an indoor smoking area.

Landside Shopping

The Landside area, or central terminal, has a comfortable environment for shopping, either before your flight or while you are waiting to pick up a passenger. The Aviation Authority has worked in recent years to improve the landside experience and renovate the airsides.

The Landside area is divided into two shopping sections: the Tampa Bay Galleria and the Marriott Shopping Arcade.

Located in the middle of the Landside terminal, the Tampa Bay Galleria has clothing stores Ron Jon Surf Shop and United Colors of Benetton. Accessories and jewelry might be found at Wilson's Leather, Harley Davidson, Sunglass International, Talie, and Bijoux Terner. For electronics, try Brookstone or InMotion Entertainment, which primarily rents DVD's and DVD players but also sells some other small electronics. Toys and collectibles are found at Mindworks and Sports Scene. To bring home a little local sunshine, try the Florida Shop or Port of Call. The requisite airport reading stores include Author's Bookstore and News Central. Really have some extra time? Why not get your hair cut at Cole's.

Set back slightly in the Landside area is the Marriott Shopping Arcade. The stores in this area are not the brand-name options in the nearby the Galleria. Most of the smaller stores sell an assortment of accessories, clothing, and toys. The stores include Top T's Inc., Nathan's Accessories, Shalimar's, Kit's Store & Flowers. For news and books try Monocle Bookstore and Tampa Gifts & News. Did you buy something but need to ship it somewhere? The Arcade has the aforementioned UPS Store.

Airside Shopping

Shopping in the airside areas (terminals) is less exciting and diverse than the Landside area, so spend a little extra time before taking the monorail to your airside.

Each airside offers I-Tech, which sells small electronics, and the following:

Airside A, primarily serving Continental and JetBlue airlines, has Bijoux Terner and an anonymous Gift Shop.

Airside C, primarily serving Southwest Airlines, has Bijoux Terner, Tampa Bay News Connection, and News Express.

Airside E, primarily serving Delta (Northwest) as well as United and Air Canada, has Bijoux Terner, and the Duty Free shop.

Airside F, serving American and US Airways, has Gulf Coast Merchantile and the Duty Free shop.

The lot offers proof that waiting has come a long way from making countless airport loops or paying for hours of garage parking. It is not just a parking lot: there are signs with arrivals information, restrooms, and free WiFi. The arrivals information also adds 20 minutes to the airplane's arrival time to better estimate a true pick-up time (20 minutes was determined to be the average length of time it takes passengers to deplane, walk through the terminal, and pick up baggage prior to pick-up).

Drivers can then pick up arriving passengers at the arrivals curbsides. The airport is divided into Red and Blue ticketing and baggage claim sections, so when picking up a passenger at the arrivals curbsides, be sure to note whether you need to stop at the Red or Blue half.

Note that on really hot days, drivers may prefer to wait in the covered short-term or long-term parking garages, where the first hour of parking is free.

Driving Directions to Cell Phone Lot

Although Tampa International Airport is one of the more well-signed airports, there are multiple approach routes. Once on the airport entrance road, follow signs to the cell phone lot, towards the long-term parking garage and the post office.

From Spruce Street: Take any local road to Columbus Drive or Spruce Street and go westbound. The airport entrance is west of Westshore Boulevard.

From Downtown Tampa: Take I-275 South to exit 39B.

From St. Petersburg: Take I-275 North to exit 39B.

From Highway 60 (Clearwater) or the Veterans Expressway: Highway 60 passes the airport entrance just east of the start of the Courtney Campbell Causeway and just south of the end of the Veterans Expressway.

From Wesley Chapel and points north: Take I-75 South to I-275 South to exit 39.

From Brandon and points south: Take I-75 North to I-4 West to I-275 South to exit 39.

From Plant City, Lakeland and points east: Take I-4 West to I-275 South to exit 39.

Driving Directions From Cell Phone Lot To Terminal

Return to Bessie Coleman Boulevard and follow signs back to the airport entrance and to the arrivals level.

Background Information

Red and Blue Sides

Keep in mind that the Landside area is divided into Red and Blue sections, based on airlines. Try to stay within the appropriate section corresponding to your flight. You can't walk from one to the other, so if you accidentally find yourself on the Red side when you should be on the Blue side, you will need to take the escalator back up to level 2 and come back down on the escalator on the other side.

Airlines Located on the Red Side

Air Canada, AirTran, British Airways, Cape Air, Cayman Airways, Continental (as well as Continental Connection and Continental Express), Frontier Airlines, Gulfstream International, Midwest Airlines, Southwest, Spirit Airlines, United, and WestJet.

Airlines are Located on the Blue Side

Air Wisconsin, American, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Comair, Delta/Northwest, Freedom Airlines, JetBlue, KLM, Republic Airways, and US Airways.

Arriving flights and corresponding baggage carousels are posted on the LED sign boards as you proceed down the escalators to baggage claim. Note: the airlines share baggage carousels.

Located in Baggage Claim

There are baggage offices at the ends of each side of the baggage claim area: two Red baggage offices (on opposite sides) and two Blue baggage offices (on opposite sides). All unclaimed baggage or items found on planes become the property of the airline. If the baggage office is unavailable, go to the airline's ticket counter on level 2.

There are restrooms, Smartcartes, Skycaps, and tourist information available in the baggage claim area. The baggage claim area also includes several works of art, including tapestries and tropical tile collages, as part of Tampa International Airport's Public Art Program.

From the baggage claim area, proceed outside to the cab lines or hotel shuttles. Cross the street to the garage for rental cars and car counters (Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise, and Thrifty). The rental cars are also divided into Red and Blue sides, so be sure to note the directional signs before exiting.

Located in Terminal 3, American Airlines is a preferred carrier for the Chicago O'Hare airport. The Chicago hub is only second to Dallas-Fort Worth with regard to volume for American Airlines. As a preferred airline to the airport, American Airlines has a major office, hundreds of flights departing and arriving daily, and is a flagship location for its lounge, the Admiral Club.

The presence of United Airlines, an additional preferred carrier for Chicago's O'Hare airport serves as a major hub for the airline. Located in Terminal 1, United Airlines offers market driven fares and an extensive flight schedules for both domestic and international destinations from Chicago's O'Hare.

Major airlines are not the only airlines with a preferred presence at Chicago's O'Hare. Low cost carriers including Jet Blue and Spirit Airlines have a reputable presence at the nation's second busiest airport. Low cost carriers offer exceptional fares and seasonal schedules to domestic locations and international locations primarily in the Caribbean. USA3000 Airline, located in the International Terminal 5, is a low cost preferred carrier that offers seasonal travel to international destinations including Cancun, Mexico and Punta Cuna, Dominican Republic. In addition, Spirit Airline, a low cost carrier, serves the International Terminal 5.

One of the greatest benefits of flying on a preferred airline is the flexibility in scheduling. Preferred airlines often have flight schedules that encompass a large variety of destinations and a large variety of flight times. The passenger is awarded with the greatest advantage of flexibility. For the business traveler, flexibility is the greatest asset of any business trip. Many business travelers elect to fly a preferred airline of an airport based solely on flexibility and not the price of the fare.

For the business traveler, whether flying a major airline or a low cost airline, Chicago's O'Hare offers several preferred airlines resulting in first-rate choices of flight schedule and fare prices. 

Arriving at Chicago's O'Hare, the business traveler has access to a wide variety of public transportation including: taxi, shuttle service, limousine service, car rental, and train service. Signs directing arriving passengers to ground transportation are clearly visible and well marked. Ground transportation facilities allow travelers to reach nearly any point within Chicago's metropolitan area as well as neighboring Midway airport.

Chicago's O'Hare airport is connected to Chicago's area subway system known simply as the "L". Taking the subway directly from the airport allows for speedy transport to nearly all points in the Chicago metropolitan area. Subway travel is encouraged and embraced by natives of Chicago. Fare prices are affordable for the train with one-way fares around the city costing well below $5.

You can also choose between renting a car or taking a cab if hopping on the area's efficient subway system doesn't appeal to you. All major rental car agencies are found within the airport to allow for worry free and last minute reservations and cabs are readily available outside of the baggage claim area.

For an affordable $25 each way, Continental Airport Express offers simple, clean efficient shuttle service to and from the surrounding suburban neighborhoods of Chicago on a daily basis. Departing roughly every 10 minutes from the lower level of International and Domestic terminals, Continental Airport Express has been in the shuttle service for a long time, making them a favorite among locals. Reservations can be made using their website or in person at ground transportation upon arrival to Chicago O'Hare. 

Omega Airport Shuttle Service offers unique service of shuttle transporting passengers between Chicago's O'Hare airport and Chicago's Midway airport.  Often times, connections through Chicago require changing airports which can be a daunting task for the traveler unaware of this unique shuttle service. Shuttle service is a mere $16 and departs hourly from both airports. Omega Airport Shuttle service also offers service to Hyde Park from both airports. Service is all day beginning at 5:45am and ending at 11:45pm. 

A third shuttle serving Chicago's O'Hare airport is Coach USA Wisconsin. Coach USA Wisconsin also transports passengers between Chicago's O'Hare airport and Midway airport, but does not included Hyde Park. Shuttle service departs hourly and the journey takes an hour each way. Cost is roughly $13, an extremely fair price for the service. The shuttle picks up passengers at the bus shuttle center of Chicago's O'Hare. 

For the business traveler, Chicago's O'Hare offers a variety of shuttle service to virtually any point around the city which is expected of an airport as large as O'Hare. Business travelers need not worry about shuttle service networks at Chicago's O'Hare; once arriving at the airport, the traveler can secure the shuttle and be en route to their destination in little or no time.

Enhanced security measure means the traveler should be aware of items that are prohibited for travel. Included in the list of prohibited items for security are: some tools and sporting goods, firearms and weapons, self defense items, martial arts items all sharp objects and flammable and explosive chemical. Additionally, any item that is deemed by the security screeners as a potential danger is also prohibited.

Chicago's O'Hare follows the guidelines set forth by the Security Transportation Administration; these are designed to protect the traveler and the airlines.  It is imperative for the traveler to be aware of such guidelines and follow thoroughly.  Knowledge and patience will allow for a worry free travel experience.

The 3-1-1 Rule

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented the 3-1-1 rule as a result of security compromises on board airplanes with regard to liquid and gel items. According to the guidelines each ticketed passenger may carry three ounce liquid containers inside one clear quart size plastic bag. All of the three ounce liquid containers must fit comfortably inside the clear quart size plastic bag. Larger liquids which are important to the traveler may also be declared at the security check point. Larger important liquids include baby milk and medications and are exempt from the 3 ounce limit but must be surrendered for inspection.

Laptops

For the business traveler especially, security checkpoints require that all laptops be removed from carryon luggage and placed in a separate bin when going through screening. Most travelers place all of their items in one bin when proceeding through screening; however, it is imperative to remember that all laptops must be placed in a bin separate of all other items.

Peak Times Mean Peak Delays

Holiday and summer travel are considered peak, or high, travel seasons and airports are busy with families traveling. High volume travel times means that there will be long lines; remember to arrive early and be patient with security screeners to alleviate added frustration with the TSA guidelines.

Limousine of Chicago

A landmark in Chicago, Limousine of Chicago offers simple as well as luxury limousine transportation service to and from the surrounding suburban neighborhoods of Chicago on a daily basis. Serving the Chicago loop, Limousine of Chicago allows for reservations to be easily made from their website.
