Since many of you have a lot of trips mapped on Travellerspoint, the order in which they appear in the list on the left starts to become important. It needs to be logical to be able to find the trips we are looking for.

Or perhaps you prefer chaos, in which case, this article is not for you! 😵‍💫

Sometimes it may seem like there is no sorting logic at all with the maps. Thankfully there is some and once you understand what's going on, it's reasonably easy to ensure your trips appear in a logical order.

There are two specific ways that the trips are sorted.

Sorting Methods

1. By the dates of the stops.
2. If no dates specified, then by the time the trip was created.

The most recent trip should always show first in the list - aka reverse chronological order.

This sorting all happens automatically based on what data you have entered.

Important to note here that changing the title of the trip does not affect sorting in any way.

Since the primary sorting method is the dates of the stops, let me explain that a little further.

In particular, the sorting algorithm looks for any stops with dates, then find the stop with the most recent date. Then the trip will be sorted on that date.

Consequently, you don't need to add dates to ALL your stops. If you can't be bothered adding dates, but do want your trips neatly sorted, you could just add a departure date to the first stop of each trip and the sorting will all happen based on that.

If you're unsure how to change dates for existing stops, here's a quick recap.

1. Click into the trip you need to change.
2. Click into a stop.
3. Click on the menu icon in the top right, then on the Edit Stop link

4. Change the date as appropriate.

Any trips with no dates will automatically be placed below the trips that did have stop dates. From there, they will be sorted by the time they were created.

Common sorting problems

Sometimes people find their trips aren't sorted correctly. There are a couple of reasons.

1. The most common one is that no dates were added. Or maybe they were added to the title of the trip. See above for how to fix that.
2. Sometimes dates were added, but one or more trips have inaccurate dates. Usually this is a case of one stop having the correct day and month, but an incorrect year. Check through any stops that look out of place and you'll probably find the culprit quickly enough.

And that just about sums up how the trip sorting takes place and what you can do about it.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask in the forums and we'll be able to help resolve the sorting issue.

More tips for your mapping

We have a few different help articles so you can make your travel map work for you. In this article, I'll run through some of the specific options you have access to with some brief explanation on how to achieve them.

A short backstory

Travellerspoint's mapping tool has evolved over 21 years to its current state.

2002 (site launch): it was nothing but a simple list of countries with dates attached to them.

2007: Our first actual mapping tool was a custom built map that used Flash. It allowed users to enter various locations and dates and drew curved or straight lines on the map depending on whether it was land based or air travel. Click the thumbnail to see what that looked like!

2011: As cool as it was to have our own mapping system, we wanted more and the Google Maps platform offered a great solution. In 2011 we launched a new Google Maps based solution adding more detailed locations and much more detailed maps.

2018: Google made a big change to its pricing model. There was little choice but to switch to something else so the move was made to use Mapbox as the mapping provider. This also brought a big increase in features with the introduction of custom map styles! It also moved the map licensing to an open source model which is far less restrictive

2023: we made a switch to the open source fork of the project - Maplibre.

2024: more map styles were added from the tile hosting service - Stadia Maps. The default map style is also served through their platform now. Depending on which map style you choose, it may come from Stadia maps, Maptiler or Mapbox at this point.

So, about those styles

There are now 10 different map styles available for the travel maps. On top of that there are options to customise the line widths and which lines are shown.

A note on these features
These are premium mapping features that are only available to supporting members. If you aren't already a supporting member, please consider becoming one; both to get access to these cool mapping options, but also to help keep this site running!

The map styles available are

Default (a muted colour option that serves a wide variety of purposes)

Light (a monochrome grey style, allowing the lines to stand out)

Dark (colours can really pop in this one)

Streets (a very familiar looking style - very close to what you might be used to from Google Maps)

Outdoors (similar to Streets, but with more outdoorsy information on the map, eg.. the altitude etc)

Bright (this has a cute wave illustration to mark the waters)

Voyager (a vaguely historic vibe with teal waters)

Toner (a very high contrast map with a distinct graphic style)

Watercolour (the name says it all - your maps will look like a watercolour painting!)

Satellite (shows satellite imagery, as the name implies)

Changing your base map style is made very straightforward.

1. While viewing the map, click on the painter's palette icon

2. Select the style you want. I'll click Toner

3. Click the Save These Settings button and you're done!

Here's a trip we did to Japan a while back shown in the Toner style. This one really looks best with really bright trip lines - yellow or red.

Other style controls

You can change a couple of other things on your map as well.

You can change the thickness of the lines.

Select your thickness.

You can change which trip lines show.

1. Untick the box to show all lines

2. Then select the ones you want

Change individual trip colours
Sometimes the default, somewhat randomly generated trip colours just don't match the basemap you have selected. You can adjust the colours of your trip lines on a trip by trip basis. This is done by editing the trip.

1. When viewing an individual trip you will see an ellipsis in the top right corner of the trip details panel. Clicking on that reveals a small menu with the option to edit the trip details.

2. On this form, there is an option to change the colour of the trip lines.

Choose your appropriate colour and save to update your trip!

That just about sums up the styling options currently (2024) available. I hope it makes it a bit easier to do. If you have any ideas on new options we could add, feel free to start a thread in the forums about it or drop us a message through the contact form.

Further reading

How to add custom routes to your travel map

How to add custom locations

An overview of the travel mapping tool.

How to style your travel map remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

Maybe it's a very small town. Maybe it's a bakery. Perhaps it's just a stop on a hiking route that is not findable via the suggested locations.

We have a solution to that and while it probably is not as obvious as it should be, it is available and I'll run through how to do in this article.

The problem

Last year my son and I went on a trip around Melbourne's bay by bike. We stayed at some caravan parks and the likes along the way. Now I could just do a rough sketch of the trip Hurstbridge -> Geelong -> Mornington -> St Kilda -> Hurstbridge. Or, I could get stuck into the detail and try to map it out precisely. Let's say I wanted to map our first night's stay at the Riverglen Holiday Park in Geelong. So I try to type it into the autocomplete

Unfortunately, it does not come up. While there are certainly many points of interest that do come up in our autocomplete, it is actually a near impossible thing to solve entirely and in this case it fails to return a result for Riverglen Holiday Park. What to do?

Add the custom location

There are actually two ways to add a custom location. The easiest for most people will be the first option which is to select a nearby location (the name of the town, some other major point of interest, etc) and then adjust it to your liking. Let me show you how to do that first.

1. Type in the name of a major location. I'm going for Geelong. As you can see, it's picked whatever the chosen centre point is for Geelong. Not where I want it, but it's close.

2. This is the important part - at this point of the process, you can edit the location. You do this by dragging the blue marker on the map to where you actually want it placed. I dragged it over to Riverglen Holiday Park and dropped it exactly where I wanted it.

3. Only one problem, the name of the location is still Geelong. I want it more specific. This can also be edited. No autocomplete will come up when typing into the location field and I can change it to whatever I want

Easy peasy. Just a note of warning though - this can only be done when you first add the stop. If you try to edit a stop later and change the location you won't be able to adjust the location (for now at least).

Now for the second option -

Adding locations by their coordinates

This is something of a power move to be fair, but if you do happen to know the latitude and longitude of the place you visited, you can in fact add that location directly. Here's how I would go about it for the same location

1. Type in the latitude and longitude separated by a comma. It must be in that order and it must be separated by a comma for this to work. The autocomplete will suggest you add it as a custom location

2. Immediately the marker goes to the correct location.

3. The only thing that needs adjusting is the name of the location, which I will adjust in the same way I did for the previous approach

And that's all there is to it. At this point, I'd probably want to create a custom route going to the location because the one it defaulted to was not correct.

I hope this helps anyone wondering how to add custom locations to your travel map.

Just to cap it off, here's a photo of where we enjoyed our coffee the next morning before we headed back out on the road

If you are stuck on anything related to mapping your travels, feel free to reach out via the contact form or in our forums. But it can also be a problem when you're hiking in the wilderness or on a camel ride across the desert or travelling in an area less mapped. We have a solution for that. This article will step through how to create your custom route and adjust it to suit your needs.

An important note up front though - you need to be a Supporting Member to use this feature. If you aren't already a Supporting Member please consider it. Not only does it unlock some nice features like this, but it also helps keep this site running!

With that out of the way, here are the steps you'll need to take to create a custom route on your travel map. To show you how it's done, I'll use a real example of a trip I did back in 1997 out to Kapingamarangi Atoll in Micronesia. The map looks sort of fine from a distance, but when you zoom in, it's clear the boat lines are just going directly over land. This can be fixed!

Ugly lines crossing directly over land!

Custom routes to the rescue! Here's how I fixed it:

1. Clicked on the transport icon in between the stops

2. Clicked on the route to open the route editor

3. Clicked on the "Add" button to add the Custom Route

4. Now I can see a new dotted line appear on the map with one handle along the line.

5. That handle is draggable and as soon as it is dragged to its desired position or just clicked on, two new handles will appear to the side of it.

6. I drag a few of these handles to create something other than just a boring straight line

7. Then I zoom into Pohnpei harbour and adjust that line so it actually goes to the ship dock

8. When I'm happy with the new route I've drawn, I click the Save button for my custom route

9. I adjusted a couple of other boat routes on the trip as well and then finally I have this much neater result.

Especially when viewed close up:

You can see my final Micronesia trip map here if you like.

I'll add just one note of caution - for now at least, when you create a custom route, it is not editable after hitting that Save button. So be certain that you are happy with the route before saving.

Happy mapping. And if you have any questions, feel free to start a thread in our forums

Creating custom routes on your trip map remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

You could include more than one tip in your blog entry if there's a few things that you mentioned that you want to highlight. Here's how you do that.

1. Write your entry as normal.
2. In the Optional Details section, you now have an option to "Attach Tips". Click on that

3. Select the tips you want to include.

4. You should see any tips you included listed next to the Attach Tips button now

5. And publish.
6. Head over to your blog entry and you should see the tip nicely included

7. Anyone who clicks on that will get an expanded view of the tip.

And that's all there is to it. As things progress, these tips will be used in a lot more places on Travellerspoint and you'll always be able to go back into your tip library to edit those tips or delete them.

Feedback on this feature is welcome in this forum thread

How to add tips to your travel blog remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

Travellerspoint helps people share and organise their travels. You can create a travel plan before your trip, map it out to get a nice overview, discuss your plans in our forums and blog about your trip while you're on the road. All this is offered for free.

But sometimes people want more. And that's where the Travellerspoint Supporting Membership comes in.

It's called a Supporting Membership because it's largely designed as a way for regular members to help support the daily operations of the site and provide a stable source of income that covers the costs of running this service. It also allows us to offer some features that would be too hard to offer to everyone for free. If you are considering signing up for this level of membership, this post will help you get an idea of what it offers.

1. Removal of Ads. This includes ads that you see on Travellerspoint when logged in, but also ads that are shown on your blog to your blog's readers. So if you don't want to burden your readers with ads, signing up as a Supporting Member is the way to do that.

2.Private Blogging If you would like to start a blog but only want certain people to see that blog, then private blogging allows that. You can set an access password for your blog and share that password with only those people who you want to be given access.

3. Custom Embedded Map Styles If you are embedding your Travellerspoint map on an external website, or if you are using the map on your Travellerspoint blog, you will be given the option to show your map using different styles. There are currently 7 additional styles to choose from. If you would like to see what those styles look like, you can do so via the following links - they all show the same map, just with the different style applied

Light

Dark

Streets - (this is the most similar to google/apple maps style)

Outdoors - (similar to streets, except when zoomed in you’ll notice more topographic detail)

Bright

Voyager

Satellite

A map with the custom style "Bright"

In addition to being able to style the look of the maps, you will also be able to toggle on some content that others can't. For example, on most stops to reasonably well known places, you'll generally see a snippet from the Travellerspoint guide with information about that place. As a Supporting Member you can turn off this snippet. This mostly is for people embedding their map on other sites where they would prefer to link to their own content.

4. Moblogging This feature will give you a custom email address that allows you to email in your blog entries rather than log on to the site. It can be good if it takes you a little while to compose your entry and you like having a copy stored in draft on your own computer.

Those are really the main benefits provided to Supporting Members.

It's also important to note that the membership is a subscription service. It costs either US$3 / month or US$30 / year and will be automatically renewed until you unsubscribe.

I hope that helps give you a better idea of what the Supporting Membership offers. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch via one of the following means

Contact us directly

Add to the Supporting Membership topic

Start a New Thread in the System Talk forum

Travellerspoint Supporting Membership|Click here to sign up as a Supporting Member]] (you will need to be logged in to Travellerspoint first)

4 Reasons to Become a Travellerspoint Supporting Member remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

One of the most popular uses of Travellerspoint's trip mapping tool is to embed these maps in blog entries and on third-party websites.

Recently, as part of a complete overhaul of the travel mapping system, I added a new ability to have more control over what the map looks like when you embed it.

My map using the voyager style

The default map style uses a grey base map. The grey style works well for general purposes because it allows the coloured lines and stop markers to stand out nicely. Sometimes however, people prefer something a bit different and it made sense to open up the possibility to use other tiles when you are embedding your map on your own site.

Let me walk you through how to go about using these new map styles in your blog. Do note though that you need to be a Travellerspoint Supporting Member to take advantage of these extra customisation options. There is extra cost involved in loading these different base maps and this helps cover that.

How to use custom map styles your blog

1. Click on the embed link when viewing your trips to get started.

If your blog is not on Travellerspoint, skip to step 5

2. If your blog is on Travellerspoint, look through the styles provided to decide which one you like best. At the time of writing there are 8 options to choose from. Click on the one you like to select it.

3. Save your choice. This will apply to all maps in your Travellerspoint blogs (including ones that you already embedded previously)

4. Now you can embed maps as normal from inside your blog using the globe icon in your blog entry toolbar.

Below only applies if your blog is not on Travellerspoint

5. If your blog isn't on Travellerspoint, click on the External Website tab

6. Look through the styles provided (8 at the time of writing) and pick the one you like. You can also set the size of your embed and choose which trip to show if you only want to show a single trip. You can also exclude the Travellerspoint guide content from showing in your embedded map if you like.

7. Click the Generate Embed Code button

8. Copy the generated code. You can paste this into your website or blog. Do note that some blog platforms (notably Wordpress.com) do not allow embed codes like this and unfortunately it won't work there. If you have a self-hosted version of Wordpress though this will work just fine.

And that's how to go about embedding your travel map with its own custom styles!

If you have any further questions about the mapping, feel free to ask away in our System Talk forum

Custom styles for your embedded travel map remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

New bloggers on Travellerspoint can struggle a little with some of the formatting options available. To try and make this a little easier, this blog post will hopefully explain the various options available to you.

First things first, here is a screengrab of what the form looks like when you are about to start writing an entry. Ignore the boring text. I wasn't feeling inspired ok?

the blog editing form

The main thing you need to note in that screengrab is the row of icons directly above the main text area. A large A followed by a smaller A, then a B, I and so on. I'm going to step through those icons and explain what you can do with them.

There are two ways to use them. Either:

Highlight a block of text, then click the icon

Place your cursor somewhere in your entry, then click the icon

The Heading Icons

- A large heading, like the one just above this
- A not-quite-as-large heading like the one just below this

The Other Icons

- Bold text

- Italic text

- A link to the guide or as a way to ensure a plain http link is made clickable. This is a special one. You can highlight the name of a place and then click on this icon and it will automatically create a link to our travel guide article about the location. For example, the highlight the text "Amsterdam", then click on the icon and you end up with something in your entry that looks like this: [[Amsterdam]]. When you then preview this, you will notice it turns it into a link like this: Amsterdam. A major caveat here - the guide article needs to exist or you'll just create a broken link. You can check if it exists by creating the link, previewing the entry, then clicking the generated link. Major locations usually exist, so you can enter them pretty confidently.

Now the other use of that icon is to make ordinary links clickable. When you enter a regular url like https://www.travellerspoint.com , it just shows up as an unclickable piece of text. But if you click on the chain icon it will wrap it in those square brackets and hey presto, now it's clickable: https://www.travellerspoint.com, which brings me to the next icon

- This is really the main one you want to use for regular links. Either highlight a piece of text that you want to make clickable, or place your cursor where you want to insert a link. Then click the icon. It will ask you for the URL (the link) that you want to insert. If you didn't highlight any text before clicking on it, the result will be something like this: [[https://www.travellerspoint.com|Your text to link here...]]. What you need to do is edit the "Your text to link here..." text and replace it with something useful, ie: [[https://www.travellerspoint.com|Awesome travel website]] which when published looks like this: Awesome travel website

- This icon allows you to insert photos into your entry. Once you click on it, you should see a popup appear with your photos in it. It looks a lot like your photo management page, but with links to insert the photos. Next to each photo there are typically three links: "Thumbnail", "Regular", "Large". Click on whatever size you want to insert in your entry. It will result in a string like this inserted into your entry: [img=https://photos.travellerspoint.com/4/sam8.jpg] Pretty boring looking, but when published that's a cool photo of Sam and I with our feet in a bowl.

- This icon allows you to insert a video. You can insert photos from a few different places where you can upload them (Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr) and they should play OK in your entry.

- This icon allows you to embed one of your trip maps in the entry. You can even zoom in to the exact area that you want to show and insert that. Like this map of a road trip we did in Queensland

.

- This allows you to insert a "quote" in your text. Some of the templates show this nicely. Others not so much. Try it out if you like. It can be a nice way to highlight a bit of text.

- Use this to create a list. Each time you click it a new list item is created. In your entry when you're editing, the list should look like this:

* Item 1
* Item 2

- Similar, but a numbered list

- Align the text to the left. Kind of the default anyway, so the use of this is probably quite limited unless your blog design is set up differently to most

- Center align a block of text

- Right align a block of text

- Float some content to the left. Typically a photo or video. The text that comes right afterwards should then wrap down to the right of the photo.

- Float some content to the right. Again, usually a photo or video. The text that comes right afterwards should then wrap down to the left of the photo.

- Underline some text
- Strike through some words, I mean one word.
- Superscript, for example this
- Subscript, for example this
- Code, used to style a bit of text to look like code. Probably not relevant to most anyone on here, but I use it sometimes.

And that about wraps it up!

Hopefully that helps you get the hang of the blog entry formatting features available on Travellerspoint.

If you have any follow up questions, or have spotted some mistakes in this article, please join this discussion in our forum
<sub>
On a total side note, you can also use all the emoticons that exist in the forum editor as well.

Mostly when we think of travel websites, we tend to think of sites that cater for broad audiences (like Travellerspoint itself). But there are also a great many websites out there that cater to specific areas of interest or styles of travel. And sometimes these websites do not get the attention they deserve.

But first, why?

I thought I'd speak to a few of the people who run these niche blogs to understand what makes them tick. Carmina runs a blog specifically about subcultures of the world, highlighting anything from goth festivals to hardcore punk rockers in Myanmar and LGBT culture in Israel. Carmina says, "I love this niche because I feel my writing can make a difference: I can shine a positive light on people / alt cultures that are often misunderstood, and let their voices and perspectives be heard."

Thomas Dowson runs a blog on the topic of Archaeology Travel, something that came to pass from a professional background in archaeology. While living in France he realised how hard it was to find information about archaeological heritage, particularly for destinations off the beaten path. As a blogger on the topic, the ability to focus on one particular component makes things somehow simpler. He says, "when I approach a destination, I do not have the worry about how much coverage that place already has or finding a new angle. The purpose of my blog provides my focus, and keeps me going." And for anyone looking to start their own travel website: "I could not agree more then that choosing a niche that you are passionate about is probably the best advice for anyone starting out. "

Bearing in mind the comments from authors behind sites like these, I went hunting for more niche sites and found a huge range of interesting topics covered by niche travel websites. There's bound to be something in this list that you will find appeals to your interests.

For the Birders

For those with a keen interest in spotting birds, travelling to new places can be a big part of the hobby. BirdingPal is a bird watching club for world travellers and the perfect place to find like minded people

For the Walkers

Walkopedia is a handy niche site tailored to those travellers who love to go walking.

For the Paranormally Inclined

Many of us have visited a ghost tour while travelling for something fun to do. For those who really want to seek out this kind of thing and are travelling in the US, Haunted Travels USA. You could equally use this website to find interesting haunted places to visit, or maybe places to avoid!

For the Storm chasers

Most of us are pretty keen to stay away from storms when we're travelling. But not the storm chasers! For them, nothing is better than a fantastic storm and chasing them down is their idea of a fun time. Stormgasm is a collaborative site about storm chasing, showing off great photos as well as educating people on storms. The personal blog of George Kourounis, Stormchaser provides further insight into what makes storm chasers tick.

For the Rock Climbers

If you find that scaling cliffs is what helps you relax, then mainstream travel sites will only take you so far. Head to one of these rock climbing websites to discover the lowdown on routes you want to tackle or work out new places to go to for a rock climbing adventure Mountain Project, Super Topo and The Crag are a few of the major rock climbing sites worth checking out.

For Those who Sleep In Airports

A long time favourite of ours, Sleeping in Airports gives you the intel you need on airports around the world and where the best spots are to sleep in them. This is useful for travellers on the cheap as well as those who might just have to do this out of necessity.

For Destination Collectors

Most of us are pretty happy just to get away to a new place, but there is a certain category of travellers who really, really like to go places for the sole purpose of ticking it off a list. Several websites have sprung up to cater to this niche. They can have various ways of keeping a tally, but all with the same ultimate goal - to become the world's best travelled person! In no particular order the ones I am aware of are The Travelers Century Club, Most Traveled People and The Best Travelled.

One of these extremely well travelled people blogs here on Travellerspoint under the username LuxuryRogue. A country collector with a specific focus on hard places, his blog - Gentleman Adventurer - makes for fascinating reading.

For Gardeners

As a gardener myself, this is just the kind of travel site that makes me want to go places. Follow the adventures of the Globetrotting Gardener and in the process get a nice list of new countries to visit just to check out their amazing gardens. Or even just worldly ideas for your garden at home.

For Location Independent Professionals and Digital Nomads

For some travel is not just for fun any more, it's made a part of life. That means taking work with you on your travels with the general goal of increasing the length of your trip. They are referred to as Location Independent Professionals (or LIPs) and sites like Nomadlist cater to their specific needs. Instead of just searching for places with some interesting things to see, Nomadlist also categories them by how fast the internet is and what rent prices are like. A number of blogs also cater to the digital nomads like Nomad Girls Travel which is specifically written for female digital nomads.

For the Hitchhikers

Hitchwiki provides a hub for those people who like to travel the world by thumb. A great co-operative resource tackling all the issues you might encounter. There's also various blogs on the topic of course, like Iris Veldwijk's Mind of a Hitchhiker detailing her hitchhiking adventures all over the world.

For Lovers of the Obscure

Atlas Obscura, a self-described "explorer's guide to the world's hidden wonders" provides a fantastic collection of unusual places to visit around the world.

If you're doing a US road trip and have a taste for the offbeat, Roadside America is well worth a look for ideas on things to see along the way.

For Geocaching

What is geocaching you ask? It's a game of sorts where people hide geocaches for others to find. The act of tracking down these geocaches is reason enough for some people to head off travelling. Geocaching.com is where you go to join in what they refer to as the world's largest treasure hunt.

For Horse Lovers

Horse Trotting is set up for the equinely inclined travellers amongst us. Showcasing trails around the world, horse events or just interesting sites that have some relation to horses. Perfect for when you have both a passion for travel and a passion for horses. As you can see, just about whatever your topic of interest, there is a website dedicated to help you travel the world exploring it.

I feel like I barely scratched the surface with this list though. The internet is a big place and no doubt there are a TON more niche sites dedicated to travel that I've totally overlooked. If you run such a site, feel free to drop me a private message here on Travellerspoint and I'll consider either adding it to this list or maybe making a follow up list!

No matter what your interest is, Happy Travelling everyone!

Stars Of The Niche Travel Web remains copyright of the author Peter, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Post tags: websites niche

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

Following the unenviable task of judging the best travel photos of 2013, we chatted with photographer, travel journalist and Picture 1000 Words author Cam Cope about what inspires his photography.

I became a photographer/travel journalist to explore life creatively and combine travel adventures with history, art, culture and storytelling—amongst many other things. My work can be found in published photo-books, published articles, and gallery exhibitions.

How did the Picture 1000 Words project eventuate?

Picture 1000 Words is an experimental love-child conceived in a highly reactive part of my imagination where an age-old truism met with an art philosophy I believe in. If it were an equation it might read something like:

"A Picture Tells a Thousand Words" X "Don't try to be the best. Try to be Different." = Picture 1000 Words

It struck me that it would be great to invite creative writers to collaborate on a project where they can each express the '1000 words' a given picture tells them and share the results in a photobook anthology and exhibition. As much research as I could endure determined that no one had put this concept together before; it was therefore different and 'new', and when I ran the idea past authors their response was terrific. The project itself then eventuated through a great amount of sweat from the combined brows of myself and all the talented authors involved.

Your photography covers many diverse countries and situations – what first interested you about travel?

When I was growing up my dad instilled me with a curiosity about the world, and because he spent significant periods of time overseas, I was always itching for 'my turn'. By the time I finished school my interests in history, the environment, art, languages, indigenous cultures, music, dance, hiking and camping all combined into the ultimate vehicle for travel. Photography has become a natural extension of that, but I am also very serious about the craft and am as equally inspired by great photographers as I am by the people I meet through the course of my work.

What has been the most memorable place or experience you have photographed?

Despite having sailed in Patagonia, ridden horses with nomads in Mongolia, lurched on the back of a truck in the Bolivian Andes, deep sea fished in Samoa, hitchhiked the Canadian arctic, island-hopped Indonesia and scaled volcano craters in Vanuatu, the most memorable experience I've had was actually very close to home in Australia. It was working on a project, Boorun's Canoe, that was all about an elder passing on local Gunai/Kurnai traditional Aboriginal culture to younger generations. The experience really proved to me that you don't have to go to the high ends of the earth to find an amazing story.

Describe your camera kit for a typical photography assignment.

I don't seem to get typical assignments! But I always use a Canon 5D Mark II camera body, sometimes with a battery pack, and choose from one of three lenses: the Sigma fixed 50mm f1.4 lens, the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens and the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I've also started to use a Fujifilm Instax to add some instant-photo fun to the equation and make the experience of photographing people I meet on the road into more of an immediate exchange.

Where would be your ideal assignment?

Anywhere on Earth that's remotely inhabitable with the strict proviso I have the time and flexibility to go into depth and do the subject justice and make a fair living at the same time—I'm allowed to dream aren't I?

***

You can follow Cam's world travels on his blog or visit his website for more breathtaking photos.

Cam Cope Talks Storytelling and Travel Photography remains copyright of the author KellieBarnes, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

It came about because I was starting this trip in Namibia volunteering with the Elephant - Human Relations Aid and had planned to join up with Dan in Vietnam. The cheapest flight to get me there would involve a transfer in Beijing, which made us stop in our tracks. Conjuring up images of The Great Wall, Chinese lanterns and pandas, we wondered why we hadn't thought of this before. There was no question about it, we had to go!

Given the limited time we had to plan we decided to use an organised tour company for the China section of our trip. This would ease us into travelling together, as well as give us support in a country that we had heard was hard to travel in without a grasp of the language. We knew we wanted to travel in a small group for a month, use local transport and experience some of the iconic landmarks China has to offer whilst immersing ourselves in the culture.

We took to the internet to research tour companies; RealGap provided the best option for us. It was a small group; cost effective including all accommodation, transport and most of our meals. We got to climb The Great Wall, see the Terracotta Army, cruise down the Li River in Guilin, teach English to the cutest kids and see pandas.

We were lucky to have a fantastic group to travel with, which makes all the difference. Our guides were incredible too! We met a new one in each place who passed on their knowledge on China's history and culture, as well as fun nights of Karaoke and teaching us how to make dumplings! I can honestly say that even a year on into our travels that China is still one of our favourite places that we have visited.

Visiting the Great Wall of China

Rehabilitation and grassroots causes are an important part of your travels. How do you find the companies you choose to volunteer with?

As we were travelling for so long we were lucky to have the extra time to get involved in projects along the way. The only volunteering that was pre-planned was my month with the Elephant - Human Relations Aid. I knew I wanted to volunteer specifically with the Namibian desert elephant and fortunately came across EHRA whilst searching online. It is a fantastic conservation project where you really get stuck in with the project, from building rock walls to tracking wild elephants across stunning landscapes. I would highly recommend it and since I was there it won Best Volunteering Organisation at Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards 2012!

Everything else we found out about whilst we were on the road. Both the Elephant Valley Project in Cambodia and Big Brother Mouse which promotes literacy in Laos came from recommendations from our Lonely Planet guide. Both were rewarding experiences.

Having access to the Internet played a huge part in finding what we were after. For example it was important to us that any elephant project we got involved in did not involve riding the elephants. To be able to double check this before committing to travelling to the project was important. It also helped us to liaise with projects so we could time our arrival in their area to coincide with when they needed our help. When we got involved with BBM they could not guarantee the exact date that the book party we had sponsored would take place, but through emails and our ability to be flexible we were able to go and deliver the books to the children ourselves, which was fantastic.

Playing games at a Big Brother Mouse book party

As well as checking out charity websites we would also look for any blogs relating to projects in the areas we were going to or even just putting the word out on Facebook for advice. When we were in Bali we found about the Bali Animal Welfare Association through a review on Trip Advisor which led us to looking further into the work they do. Once we heard more about the issues faced by the animals BAWA strives to help, we decided to stay a week longer in Ubud to do what we could too.

What I think was a good approach for us was that we didn't just go with the first thing we saw, we took time to research anything we found, try to get a steer of the organisation and whether we saw in it things we wanted to help with, did we believe in what they were doing and really that only comes with persevering and taking time to read up on them.

The only other thing we would say is be open to any situation and you might find something you wouldn't read about in a book or on the internet. We were approached out of the blue to join in a free dive trip to help clear up the rubbish around Gili Trawangan's reefs harbour, and learnt things we didn't know about issues with rubbish in the ocean. We also ended up helping at a charity event for Hearts4Heart in Melbourne, through meeting a friend of a friend who had suffered from heart disease and used her own experiences to set up a charity to help others.

None of it was planned and all of it added a unique opportunity which otherwise we wouldn't have known about. You could pick up the paper one day and be planting trees the next!

Sarah getting involved at National Tree Day in Melbourne

What are some of the challenges you've had to deal with on your journey?

Would you say a 29 hour local bus ride from Luang Prabang to Vientiane in a bus that looked like it was on its last legs, full to the brim with passengers who didn't take too well to winding roads, classes as a challenge? That was possibly up there with some of the hardest parts of our travel but oddly, you feel more like an adventurer when you are in those situations and you look back on it with a smile.

The other experiences that we haven't enjoyed so much are when someone takes advantage and exploits your limited knowledge to earn an extra buck. This only happened once or twice, one of which was in China when a guy in the Tourist Information Office ripped us off just because he knew he could. We hadn't been able to research the area and knew we had little time to find our way from the train station to the bus stop before our scheduled bus would leave. You would think tourist information would be the best place to ask, right? Wrong! Here is a lesson, try to research the area before you get there because the 40 minute drive you have been advised is necessary may turn out to be a 5 minute drop off around the corner, setting you back £30!

That was a challenge for us because we wanted to make a complaint about it but you can't do that because the culture and language is different. You just have to suck it up, because in the grand scheme of things it's really not that big of a deal.

We also struggled with flagging when we had been on the road for five or six months. Trying to organise and be on the go all the time to see the next thing became a drag. Each being unwell during this time didn't help the situation but regardless of that we just needed to stop and gather ourselves. A quick decision to go to Perhentian Islands was the perfect solution. The beach was white, the water was clear and we did absolutely nothing for a week except sunbathe, watch movies at the local cinema-cum-bar, and enjoyed just being in the moment.

Remember not to worry about making the wrong decision; there isn't one, it's all part of the adventure.

Do you have any tips for travelling as a couple?

Take it in turns who makes the decisions. This is a great tip we were given by a friend before we left. It means you avoid going around in circles trying to work out what to do next, where to eat, where to stay etc. Remember not to worry about making the wrong decision; there isn't one, it's all part of the adventure.

Don't let the little things become big things, keep talking! This was optimised on Gili Air when everything Dan did was winding me up, even him asking me if I was ok was annoying. On the third time of him asking I turned to him and said 'I don't know why but sometimes I just want to punch you in the face!'. It was such a ridiculous outburst that after a few stunned seconds we both burst into laughter! Tension released, we headed to the beach and had one of the funniest conversations, telling each other every little thing that had been annoying us about the other, no matter how silly it sounded.

It's ok not to be with each other all the time. Sometimes you just need your own space, or you will want to do something the other doesn't. This is totally fine, just go your separate ways that day. It may even be for a couple of days like when Dan went to climb Mt Rinjani in Lombok, I travelled back to Bali on my own to do some yoga and we were apart for three days. You'll have great fun sharing your adventures over a cocktail when you meet up again.

Encourage each other to step out of their comfort zone. I would still be stuck in a 60 ft treehouse if Dan hadn't talked me into trusting the zip wire and taking that leap, and Dan wouldn't have rescued a puppy from a drain if I had not coaxed him into putting his concerns aside about volunteering in an animal shelter. You'll surprise yourself and each other at what you can achieve and create memories that will last a life time!

Dan and new love Bella at Bali Animal Welfare Association

What's next? Any places you will visit again?

We've just decided that the next leg of our adventure will be to drive across Australia from Melbourne to Perth which will include crossing the vast expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. We've heard so many great things about the west coast that we can't miss out on taking a look for ourselves. We were given a great tip that car rental companies need people to drive their rental cars/vans back to their depot of origin, for free! This helps them to save on the transporter costs that they would otherwise incur and is great for us as we get to have an Australian roadtrip without the rental cost. We used Transfercar to find a company that needed drivers and fortunately we found one that matches exactly what we need. We'll be heading off on 21st November so keep checking our blog to see how we get on!

We would love to one day go back to China, Laos and Indonesia again. We had such amazing experiences in these places. China is so vast and culturally different from anywhere else we have been, there is just so much to try and take in that one trip is not enough. Laos is simply beautiful and the people are as intrigued to find out about you as we were to find out about them and I would go back for their smiles alone. What can I say about Indonesia, it is stunning! With our new passion for diving we definitely want to return there to check out more of the amazing dives it has to offer.

Talking Travel with Sarah Doyle (doyledan) remains copyright of the author KellieBarnes, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Post tags: talkingtravel interviews

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs

From this one spot you can share your experiences and keep all of your family and friends updated on your whereabouts.

Blogging can be overwhelming if you haven't done it before so we have made some short videos to help you get started. You can take a look at them first or scroll down for further instructions below.

The Setup

Before you begin, choose a blog name you wish to write under. This name can be different from your Travellerspoint username but should suit any future blogs you may write. For example, we might choose to blog under The Wandering Gypsy; a unique name that is not tied to a destination or time and allows us to write about ongoing adventures.

To start a travel blog requires just three simple items: a blog title, subheading, and a unique blog domain.

Create a travel blog with three simple items

Using our chosen blogging name we would enter the title as The Wandering Gypsy and then include a snappy subheading to let people know what the blog will be about. (Check the video to see what we chose!)

The blog domain (or URL) will be http://yourusername.travellerspoint.com by default but we shall change it to http://thewanderinggypsy.travellerspoint.com for some consistency with our chosen persona.

The URL can also be edited later under Settings in your blog's Control Panel. Just make sure to update any blog readers with the new address!

Control Your Privacy

For privacy, travellers have the option to password protect their blog in the optional settings.

Password protect your blog

Once it has been made private, all visitors to the blog will then be presented with a login window. If you select this option, you will simply need to advise any loved ones of the password you have selected for them to view your entries.

Share The Love

The best and easiest way to let people know about your blog is to provide them with the direct URL that you selected earlier. Once at your blog, readers can use the Subscribe button located at the top of your blog's navigation to be notified via email each time you publish a new entry.

Menu options at the top of the blog navigation

For the tech inclined, the direct link to subscribe will be http://yourdomain.travellerspoint.com/subscribe/.

Make It Fun

I think the key to good travel writing is an emotional component, so it’s not just about factual stuff like 'I went here. I did that' or fake, glossy brochure stuff that pretends that all travel is perfect. — Tim Richards

Travel is fun but sometimes a little editing can make the story even better. An overview of an experience or a city will excite readers more than a blow-by-blow description.

In an interview earlier this year with travel writer Tim Richards, he shared his expert advice on how to write compelling travel stories. You should develop your own writing style but remember to make concise, original, and interesting stories.

After you have found your writing voice, the next step is to format the text for publishing on the web.

Readability is very important. Your family will read every word you have written but you should not make it hard for them to do so! For help on formatting blog entries see About.com's tips on creating easy-to-read posts.

For ongoing inspiration and examples of successful blog writing, check out our featured blogs.

Ready to show off your adventures? Start a travel blog on Travellerspoint.

***

If you found this article helpful please consider sharing it on Twitter or Google+.

We speak to Tim Richards, a Melbourne-based freelance writer. Tim is a contributing Lonely Planet author, and creator of several mobile travel apps including Australia by Rail. He blogs at I, Writer and shares travel photos on Google+.

What's your background and when did you start working as a freelance writer?

I have no professional journalistic qualifications whatsoever. I think I’ve always been writing as a hobby in various ways; pre-internet I used to be in various science fiction fan clubs and write in little magazines or newsletters for them for six years. When I came to Melbourne from Perth in 1998 I started doing a theatre review website called Stage Left—which went for six years—and that was a little bit before the era when people were making money out of websites. It was a bit like a glorified hobby but I realise now it was like an apprenticeship in a sense, for the freelance writing, because it got me dealing with PR people. It got me editing; writing; organising; thinking about how these things work online, so I think that was probably a good curtain-raiser.

When I became redundant from an internet company job in 2003, I had just been to New Zealand so I thought I should try this freelance writing thing for six months and see how I go—not just travel writing but freelance writing in general—and I thought I should give it a go to put some money in the bank and I’ve been doing it ever since.

I think the key to good travel writing is an emotional component, so it’s not just about factual stuff like 'I went here. I did that' or fake, glossy brochure stuff that pretends that all travel is perfect

Your writing covers a diverse range of topics. Which stories do you find the most enjoyable to write?

Obviously travel but I used to write pet stories for a while and they were great: you need to be an expert on something you have no idea on regarding cats and dogs; you learn something as you go.

Travel is the main thing, that’s the main way I make money, the thing I love doing. There’s no way you’d be a famous travel writer because you are in it for the money, it’s just such a nutty way to make money partly because travel is so time-consuming, not just money-consuming. A lot of other journalistic jobs you can do from a desk or you can do locally very quickly, whereas travel is time-consuming in a general sense.

I think the key to good travel writing is an emotional component, so it’s not just about factual stuff like 'I went here. I did that' or fake, glossy brochure stuff that pretends that all travel is perfect, but actually going there and observing in detail. Not just observing the way things look physically but also the emotional component and observing your emotional reactions to things, and in the end being able to relay that through writing so that hopefully the person who is reading it knows what it’s like to have been there in that place on that day and has an emotional connection with what you felt. That sort of writing is what I enjoy doing and obviously some destinations or attractions lend themselves really well to that and some don’t so much.

You're also a regular contributor to Lonely Planet guidebooks on Eastern Europe - where else have you travelled and where is your favourite spot?

I will give you the standard answer: there is no favourite spot, they’re all just chalk and cheese. I like everywhere I’ve been for different reasons. Even the places that at first glance you think 'this is a bit challenging', if you dig under the surface there are interesting things.

I go to Poland quite often and to cities like Krakow—where I lived for a bit in the '90s—and when you arrive there you have no trouble figuring out why people like it but you go to Warsaw and you might step out from the central train station and think 'God, where have I arrived?'. It’s not that attractive in that area and there is a lot of concrete in the city because it was basically destroyed in World War II and rebuilt, but once you know the history of the place, once you dig under the surface, once you meet a few locals you start to realise—it is actually one of my favourite cities.

... but you look on the map and there’s still so much to visit, so much to see you can't run out.

I go to Poland a lot, so therefore I have also gone to countries surrounding Poland because I want to build up more material for writing stories, so I have been to a lot of those former communist countries in Central Europe particularly Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Slovakia. Otherwise, the more obvious places, like I’ve been to Britain a few times. I’ve written stories about Ireland, Germany, France, and Austria. I’m going to Sweden this year and Scandinavia for the first time now that it’s actually relatively affordable because of [the Australian] dollar. I lived in Egypt for two years in the '90s, so while we were there teaching English we went on holidays and saw lots of bits of Egypt, also Syria and Jordan, which are great countries. It’s just such a pity that it’s difficult to travel to at the moment. North America: in the US I’ve only seen Montana and North Dakota, which is very obscure but they were actually great states to visit; in Canada I’ve been to all major cities. South America: I’ve been to Chile and down south to the glaciers and I’ve seen very specific islands as part of that trip and other trips. Asia: bits of China, Shanghai, the Yangtze River, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. I went to Delhi last year and Agra—sort of every continent except Antarctica—but you look on the map and there’s still so much to visit, so much to see you can't run out.

What are your favourite travel tips?

This is obviously a cliché but pack light. I only ever take one cabin-luggage-size bag with me on a trip of any duration. I had it in Thailand for a week, I had it in Europe for eight days, I had it last year for two months but everyone is different and pack light means different things. I don’t mean you just have to take cabin luggage—that won’t work for everyone—but pack as light as you can. You can buy stuff where you are going, you do not need all those shoes. A lot of the places you are going you know you are not going to anything formal so you only really need a limited repertoire of clothes. It’s taken me years to get to that point but I’ve got it pretty well nailed now.

If you can travel with a bit of a theme, if there's something you are particularly interested in—it might be something to do with history or literature or pop culture—a little theme gives you a quest, it gives you something to look for. It might not be everything you do on the trip, for example if you are in Poland or one of those countries you might be fascinated by some of the surviving Communist-era architecture. If you were in Britain, for example, there’s so many well-known TV shows that you might decide to track down some of their locations. I think having little themes, even sub-themes, that may be based on your interests is a fun way of just packing up, especially if you are going back to a place where you’ve already seen all the big sights.

Oh and one more tip: never drink coffee at train stations or on trains.

Do you have any advice for writers looking to join the travel industry?

I would say every person who’s got a travel story published has been published for the first time. Editors don’t care who you are really, they are just interested in interesting stories. If the story is interesting and well written they don’t care whether you have been published a million times or never, so use your observational skills. Really observe, really take good notes. Observe not just physical attributes but emotions, what you feel when seeing a place or doing an activity or whatever it is and then relay that in your writing. I know it sounds easy but it’s hard, it is actually really hard. Note things more than you normally would, including emotions and reactions, and then you have solid material to put together a story.

If the story is interesting and well written [editors] don’t care whether you have been published a million times or never, so use your observational skills.

I always say you’ve got two extremes you should avoid as a travel writer: one is glossy travel brochure writing where it’s just full of insanely over the top adjectives and everything is perfect and idyllic and pristine and tranquil and all that sort of thing (which is just boring because it’s not real and everyone knows travel isn’t perfect); and at the other end it’s what I call the What I Did On My Summer Holiday essay where you just go 'I went to breakfast then I went out the door then I did this then I did that.' It’s very dull with no emotional component, no selection in it, and those two extremes are both not right and somewhere in the middle where you’ve got emotions and its interesting and alive but it's not just a bland brochure either—again, sounds easy but not so easy to actually do.

***

Check out our other posts in the Industry Interview series:

Industry Interview with Rod Cuthbert, author of Vacation Rules

Industry Interview with Richard I'Anson

Industry Interview with Anthony Asael from Art in All of Us

Industry Interview with Mark Hodson of 101 Holidays

Industry Interview with Alexis Grant of The Traveling Writer

Interview with freelance travel writer Tim Richards remains copyright of the author KellieBarnes, a member of the travel community Travellerspoint.

Post tags: writing interviews industryinterview

Comment on this entry | Tweet this | Your own free travel blog | More Travellerspoint blogs
