Davis is on Twitter and does a great job of actually replying, as well as sharing photos and insider info.

It was ranked as #1 among the Top 50 Courses in Myrtle Beach by Golf Digest.

Golf Digest also gave it 4 1/2 Stars in it’s “Places To Play” review.

It has wide open fairways and generous landing areas…can you say fun to play for everybody?

The greens are A-1 bentgrass. Need I say more?

Davis is a Carolina boy all the way from start to finish. North, South, eh, what’s the difference anyway?

They’ve got 30 acres of range and practice facilities. That’s like a lot.

There’s a Greg Norman Australian Grille on the premises. That’s worth the drive even if you don’t play golf.

There’s a House of Blues nearby. Hello!? What else can you ask for?

David Letterman isn’t going to be there anytime soon to do his Top 10, so you have to use mine.

Now that you’ve read this, what are you waiting for? Call ‘em up, catch a plane and go see for yourself. You won’t be sorry.

One of the most memorable showdowns in major golf championship history took place at the 1977 Open Championship at Turnberry, when Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson engaged in a historic 36-hole battle for the Claret Jug that became known as “The Duel in the Sun.”

When the 2009 Open Championship returns to Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland, next week, the GOLF CHANNEL will chronicle the story of the duo’s epic battle in a special presentation, Duel in the Sun, airing Monday, July 13 at 9 p.m. ET.

The half-hour special includes tournament footage from the original broadcast and features recent interviews with Nicklaus and Watson, third-round leader Roger Maltbie, 1977 U.S. Open Champion and third-place finisher Hubert Green, and several award-winning journalists.

Duel in the Sun will document the Nicklaus-Watson pairing in the final round at the 1977 Open Championship, where they separated themselves from the field. Watson, going for his second major of the year, birdied the 71st hole on Sunday to take the lead for the first time, ultimately finishing one shot ahead of Nicklaus at 12-under-par. Green, who finished 11 strokes back of Watson at 1-under-par, was the only other player to break par for the tournament.

Duel in the Sun will re-air Monday, July 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET and Tuesday, July 14 (Monday night) at midnight ET.

How often is it that we get to play a round of golf and a newly redesigned course?

Especially one that can play well for the strongest golfer in your party as well as the weakest?

The new look golf course at La Torretta Del Lago just outside of Houston, Texas encompasses all of that and more.

Brought on in the spring of 2007 to begin the redesign, local golf course architect Jeffrey D. Blume began the huge task of redesigning the course into the landscape of the surrounding resort and spa. Although the redesign left the course at a par 71 instead of 72, Blume was able to add over 100 yards to the overall play of the course by adding some length to tee boxes and shifting greens around where possible.

All of the main assets of a golf course you would expect come into play: bunkers, water hazards, hills, natural hazards, and the play of light to give you a very memorable playing experience. The hazards on each hole are set up to challenge even the most experienced golfer, while giving those who wish to lay up and play the hole a bit easier. The greens are large to allow good opportunity to make the green in regulation, yet contoured in a way to challenge everyone when it comes time to truly test your short game.

The course is constructed of Tifdwarf Bermudagrass, with native Texas grass and wildflowers in the roughs. The course clocks in at right around 7,000 yards, and each hole is unique and memorable in it’s own way. When you’re finished with your round, you can relax in the spa area, or even spend the night in one of the golf cottages on property that provide you with a view of the course.

If you’re interested in finding out more about this Houston golf course, there is a play-by-play available.

On the heels of the recent launch of Black Widow Tour, golf’s first adjustable cleat that enables golfers to custom match their golf cleats to their swing, balance and weight distribution, Softspikes today unveiled www.blackwidowtour.com.

The new micro-site, along with a related Facebook page and other online marketing initiatives created by Softspikes, the world’s leading golf cleat brand and the #1 cleat on Tour, is designed to promote the innovative features and benefits of Black Widow Tour.

The new interactive website debuts just as the Black Widow Tour cleat arrives at retail, specialty, green grass and off-course retail shops nationwide.

The launch, as Softspikes celebrates 17 years of innovation, also coincides with the 15th Anniversary of the first metal spike ban when Softspikes first changed the game forever, saving golf greens and billions of dollars in golf course and clubhouse maintenance. Further, it was 10-years ago that the original Softspikes Black Widow debuted and redefined the plastic golf cleat category forever.

“We are very excited to launch this new website to promote the unmatched
features and benefits of Black Widow Tour,” said John Hohman, VP of
Marketing, PrideSports, maker of Softspikes. “Everyone has worked so hard
on the development of this site, and we are confident our customers will
find it very beneficial.”

Hohman adds, “As the number one selling cleat brand in the world, and as the cleat of choice for more than 70% of the field at PGA TOUR events for the past 13 years, I believe players of all levels will be very pleased with our new offering in the Softspikes family of cleats.”

In returning to its Black Widow roots, the Black Widow Tour cleats follow in
the Softspikes heritage of providing extreme traction and comfort, combined with ultimate green-friendliness, by taking the Company’s proprietary technologies to the next level in offering golf’s first adjustable cleat.

Defining the innovation behind Black Widow Tour is self-adjusting traction
technology and new “Support Rings” that enable golfers to customize the
level of comfort in their cleats. Highlighted by 8 traction elements,
including 4 large flexible legs that provide unmatched grip on any
terrain/surface, the cleat is matched with 4 cushioning towers that absorb
secondary loads and then distribute the golfer’s weight throughout the
cleat. These features are then combined with proprietary “Support Rings”
that allow golfers the option to select the comfort setting that best suits
their game. “Support Rings” attached to each individual Black Widow Tour
cleat can be positioned in two distinct settings:

Tour-Comfort Setting: Provides maximum flex, ultimate comfort and extreme traction.

Tour-Firm Setting: Provides extreme traction through a firmer, spike-like feel, by providing more resistance at initial impact.

“Adjustability has become a big part of golf equipment today, as players
strive to custom match their equipment to their golf swing,” said Hohman.
“We have taken this same approach with Black Widow Tour and utilized our proprietary technology to enable golfers to customize their level of
comfort, which positively impacts each individual player’s swing, balance
and weight distribution.”

With Black Widow Tour, Softspikes expects to replicate the success of the
original Black Widow, which was launched in 1999 as the most innovative golf cleat ever developed, offering unmatched traction, comfort and durability.

Soon after its introduction, Foot Joy, the world’s leading golf shoe
company, made Black Widow original equipment on all of its golf shoes.
This, along with strong consumer appeal for the product, quickly made Black
Widow the #1 selling cleat in the world – a distinction Softspikes maintains
today. Equally important, Black Widow became the cleat of choice on TOUR,
amassing hundreds of victories.

A few days ago the Travelling Golfer and 3 friends had the extreme privilege to play a round of golf just outside of the metro part of Evansville, Indiana, at Cambridge Golf Club.

It’s always been one of my favorite places to play and this round was no different.

The new Pro over there, Matt Scheessele and his #1 staffer, Alisha, took such good care of us that I knew if the World’s Best Golf Course Owner, Mr. Wright was there, he’d have been very proud of them!

I’ve never had a bad sandwich in their grillroom and the Black and Bleu Burger was great as always!

The wind was howling, but we enjoyed the heck out of the round, because the Keeper of The Greens, Tony, has everything in top notch shape, as always.

The carts are always fully charged and the place is made even better by the great people who play there on a regular basis.

The range, with it’s zoysia, is always in great shape and gets you ready for the fine fairways and tough, but well groomed, greens.

If I could live and play there for the rest of my days, I’d be a happy Travelling Golfer!

The only bad part of playing at Cambridge is trying to decide where to eat dinner afterwards

You have to choose to go back to their grillroom or go to Stoll’s or go to The Log Inn or the The Haub or to …er, well, you see my dilemma.

If you’re heading over there, tell ‘em the Travelling Golfer sent you, or send me an email and I’ll join you!

The two-part, GOLF CHANNEL special airing Monday and Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET will treat viewers to an intimate look into Nicklaus’ business life and show how he is giving back to the game he loves.

Filmed in high definition, Planet Jack will give viewers unprecedented access on a business trip Nicklaus and his design team took to visit several golf courses currently in development around the world.

“I love designing golf courses,” said Nicklaus in the special. “I love being
involved in the growth of the game and entering new markets.”

Monday’s show will follow Nicklaus and his design team on the first leg of their trip, which takes them from his North Palm Beach, Fla., home to development projects in Japan, South Korea, India and China.

In the show, Nicklaus makes a special trip to China’s Mission Hills Golf Club where, in 1994, he designed the first of their 12 golf courses. There, he receives a lifetime achievement award and also reflects on his relationship with his father and his rededication to golf after his father’s passing.

Tuesday’s episode will feature Nicklaus’ visit to the Seychelles Islands for a day of relaxation and fly fishing. Nicklaus and son, Jack II, will discuss their shared experience at the 1986 Masters, where the Golden Bear won his record 18th major championship.

The next stop will take the team to the Republic of Mauritius, an island nation off the coast of Africa, to survey land for a prospective golf course.

Before arriving at their final stop in South Africa – where he worked on two golf courses under construction – Nicklaus will already have begun laying out the plans for the golf course in Mauritius.

The episode will conclude with the 18-hour journey back to Florida, just in time for his standing tennis match.

Nicklaus Design, a global golf course design firm founded by Nicklaus, has 341 golf courses open for play in 34 countries and 39 states. Among those courses, Nicklaus has directly been involved in the development of 273. With more than 80 percent of his designed courses overseas, Nicklaus logs more than 500 travel hours a year with his design team in helping to grow the game of golf.

How many golf related items can you say that about?

Your driver? Nope.

Your putter? Nope.

Your wedges? Not til they wear out.

My Martini Golf tees? DO NOT TOUCH ‘EM OR YOU’ll HAVE BIG TROUBLE!

My Amphibian Towel and my BrushPro? You have no chance at gettin’ ‘em off my bag! Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Why? How many golf towels can you find that are wet inside and dry outside? Or dry inside and wet outside?

With the Amphibian Towel, you can have it either way.

It’s a few degrees over 90 in Kentucky today and I can pour water on the inside of my Amphibian and use the inside to clean off my clubs and the outside to dry ‘em off.

Last week, when it was raining off and on for a week, all I had to do was reverse the process. I used the outside as the wet and the inside stayed dry for the entire round, even with me wiping off clubs 2-3 times per hole.

I’m in golf towel love, so do not try to come between us!

And the BrushPro was the best tool I’ve ever used for cleaning my grooves. Whether I used the retractable spike or the combo bristles, both were as good as I could have wanted.

I got mine in University of Kentucky blue to help balance out the Western Kentucky Hilltopper mascoy headcover, Big Red!

Whatever color you choose, the Amphibian Towel and the Brushpro get the Travelling Golfer’s highest recommendation!

Florida and North Carolina had five each. The rankings are based on extensive criteria established by Golf Digest and used by hundreds of expert golfers to assess each course. They appear in the May 2009 issue of the magazine now on the stands.

I’m not an expert golfer, I guess, ’cause they didn’t ask me

The highest ranked South Carolina course on the list was The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, ranked number four. Kiawah Island Golf Resort also had another course on the list, Turtle Point at No. 48.

Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island was ranked No. 13, while the May River Golf Club at Palmetto Bluff was ranked No. 22.

Six of the eleven courses are on the Grand Strand, home to more than 100 courses and one of the world’s most popular golf destinations. They are The Heritage Club at Pawleys Island (No. 33), the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach (No. 38), Tidewater Golf Course & Plantation at North Myrtle Beach (No. 41), Caledonia Golf & Fish Club at Pawleys Island (No. 66), the Resort Club at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach (No. 77) and a pair of courses at Barefoot Resort & Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach – the Fazio layout at No. 96 and the Dye course at No. 99.

There are more than 380 golf courses in South Carolina. The S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism maintains a Web site specifically targeted to golfers at www.SouthCarolinaGolf.com, along with the state’s
official general tourism site at www.DiscoverSouthCarolina.com.

Personally, I trained in Fort Jackson, SC, in June, July and August, with a small Ranger Battallion and I would advise you not to do the same.

Instead, Play Golf America!

If you’d like to search for particular golf courses, The Golf Channel has a golf course finder available.

At some point during the month, the one millionth free lesson mark will be reached and that’s an amazing stat.

Especially in this economy, I thought this annual promotion of the game of golf would be of interest to everybody, especially the hackers out there who have never taken a lesson !

To find participating facilities in your area, simply go to PlayGolfAmerica.com and click on the PGA Free Lesson Month box at the top. Enter your zip code to find the facilities in a 10, 20 and 30 mile radius.

As a six year veteran of the U.S. Armed Services, I’m delighted to help announce that Marriott Golf, one of the world’s premier golf operators and the golf management organization of Marriott International, Inc. today introduced the “Fairway Furloughs” Military Golf Program, designed to honor the nation’s Armed Forces.

In celebrating America’s military men and women, and in advance of National Military Appreciation Month in May, the new program provides active, reserve and retired military personnel with tremendous values at 26 acclaimed Marriott Golf courses throughout the United States.

Starting today, members of the armed forces can take advantage of discounted green fees/carts, ranging from just $29 – $69. This program is available after 3 p.m. any day of the week, year round, at participating Marriott Golf courses.

Tee times can be made up to three days in advance, and a valid military ID card must be presented. In some cases, select Marriott Golf properties will even extend the hours that the special offer is available, further enhancing the value of the program and enabling eligible military personnel to experience the Company’s prestigious collection of championship golf courses.

Participating courses in the “Fairway Furloughs” Military Golf Program
include some of the country’s premier championship venues such as Camelback Golf Club, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Miami, Fla.; Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, Lihue, Hawaii; and Stone Mountain Golf Club, Stone
Mountain, Ga., among others. In total, 26 golf courses located at 18
Marriott Golf properties will participate in the program, which will provide
military personnel with arguably the greatest golf values in the country
today.

“At a time when the country’s military men and women need our support as
much as ever, Marriott Golf created the Fairway Furloughs program as a
thank-you to members of the armed forces who love the game of golf,” said
Bill Nault, Vice President, Marriott Golf. “In this country, we have hundreds of thousands of active, reserve and retired military personnel who play golf, and we can’t think of a better way to reward their unmatched dedication then to provide great values to play on our collection of championship courses.”

The complete list of Marriott Golf properties participating in the “Fairway
Furloughs” Military Golf Program includes: Camelback Golf Club, Scottsdale,
Ariz.; Desert Springs Golf Resort, Palm Desert, Calif.; Doral Golf Resort &
Spa, Miami, Fla.; Grande Pines Golf Club, Orlando, Fla.; Grande Vista Golf
Club, Orlando, Fla.; Hawk’s Landing Golf Club, Orlando, Fla.; Renaissance
Vinoy Resort, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Shadow Ridge Golf Club, Palm Desert,
Calif.; Starr Pass Golf Club, Tucson, Ariz.; The Rookery at Marco, Naples,
Fla.; Wildfire Golf Club, Phoenix, Ariz.; Cattails Golf Club, Kingsport,
Tenn.; Griffin Gate Golf Club, Lexington, Ky.; Kauai Lagoons Golf Club,
Lihue, Hawaii; Stone Mountain Golf Club, Stone Mountain, Ga.; Crane’s
Landing Golf Club, Lincolnshire, Ill.; Westfields Golf Club, Clifton, Va.;
and Willow Crest Golf Club, Oak Brook, Ill.

Members of the armed forces participating in “Fairway Furloughs” can also
take advantage of Marriott Golf Links, the Company’s golfer loyalty program
that enables Marriott Rewards members to both earn and redeem points for
golf. Members can earn Marriott Rewards points for rounds of golf and golf
retail merchandise purchases. In addition, members can redeem points for
rounds of golf, hotel accommodations, spa experiences, golf instruction, and
more.
