The calmness at daybreak contrasts with the flurry of tourists in the afternoon. The craftsmanship and skill the are exuded through this church are unmistakeable. Even now the texture and varying tones to the buildings stone bring a sense of warmth and strength. So though we've lived here for well over two years it is still difficult not to feel a certain draw and aurora over many of the traditional tourist sites.

<!--
Having a bit of time to search for a vehicle I surfed some of the common online locations. Each site has its advantages.

Autotrader

Ebay Motors

Gumtree

What I came to realise though, is that just as finding a place to live can be challenging, so too can finding a car. Many cars in the lower price ranges change hands very quickly. It can be posted one day and gone before you even get a chance to call. It is easy to waste a fair amount of time calling numbers aimlessly receiving the news that the vehicle has already been sold. Many second tier traders buy and sell cars on these sites. Many of them have relationships with new car dealerships.
The new car dealerships want to get rid of cars they have acquired as part exchange that are more than a few years old. These traders take these cars off their hands and sell the cars often using their own homes as their base of business. Always be thorough in checking them out and it can be prudent to perform a car data check either through the AA or RAC.

I was able to narrow my search by creating a spreadsheet of the vehicles that met my criteria. One of the main drivers in my search was an effort to find a car capable of carrying 5 that was inexpensive to operate. There are three simple and straightforward operating costs to consider when choosing a vehicle.

Fuel Economy - Its no surprise that the cost of petrol or diesel can really add up, especially with their prices only going up. The government sponsored site CarFuelData can provide you with both the fuel economy of vehicles made after 1999 and their emissions, useful when considering the cost of road tax.

Road Tax - Vehicles registered prior to March 2001 are taxed according to their engine size; those with engines less than 1549cc are £125 per annum and engines larger are £205. For newer cars tax is determined by CO2 emissions, ranging from 0 to 435. The details are can found at DirectGov.

Insurance - Vechicles fall into different insurance groups, 1-20, each one being sequentially more expensive. Additionally items such as airbags, immobilisers and certain locking systems can affect the cost of car insurance. If you don't already have insurance or are looking for a better deal you may want to try one of the cost comparison websites.

After test driving vehicles that I found on each of the sites listed above and coming across dodgy characters I was able to find the right car at the right price. While buying a used car can be complicated, thorough research can improve your purchasing prowess.
This is significantly lower than the current global leader, South Korea, where average download speeds are over 14Mbps. However, in the UK there are plans to extend the availability of fibre optic and mobile broadband services, which can evolve to offer much faster speeds to businesses and consumers.

Other nations which offer faster average speeds for broadband connections than the UK include the USA with 3.9Mbps and Ireland with 5.3Mbps. There were several European nations, including France, Spain and Italy, in which broadband speeds were actually slower on average than in the UK. Australia is also lower down the list than the UK. If you are looking for the fastest average broadband speed for a single city in Europe, then head to Lausanne in Switzerland, where 24Mbps download speeds are the norm.

In the UK there are three common broadband technologies available; ADSL, Cable and Mobile broadband. Most other nations will offer varying combinations of these three to residents, though the proportion of the population which is serviced by a particular technology can differ dramatically. For example, though mobile broadband is widely available in the UK, the Spanish market for mobile broadband is limited to a small number of built up locations in which the 3G networks which make mobile broadband possible are set up. In the USA the proliferation of Cable broadband is more extensive than in the UK, but again this can vary depending on the state or region you are examining.

Virtually every nation on the planet will offer basic ADSL broadband, as it uses existing copper telephone wiring and exchanges, though surveys show that the UK is one of the cheapest places to be a broadband customer. The costs of services in other nations, including Australia, will be higher, or will have lower speeds and much more restricted data allowances each month.

There are many different broadband providers to choose from in the UK. BT and many other ADSL providers are beginning to offer 20Mbps connections via ADSL, though because of the limited availability of the technology this may not be open to everyone. Virgin Media is the only major national supplier of cable broadband and offers download speeds of up to 50Mbps if you are willing to pay for the privilege and live in a cabled area. Mobile broadband providers are also numerous, though network Orange currently claims to offer the most comprehensive 3G coverage in the UK.

Choosing a broadband provider is often half the battle and unless you take the time to shop around you could be left paying over the odds for a connection. The best solution is to visit a broadband price comparison site, which will round up all of the latest deals from providers in your area and arrange them according to your requirements. Whether you are looking for the quickest connection or the lowest cost, price comparison is the way to go.

Want to test the speed you really have now? Broadband Speed Test
<!--

The atmosphere was excellent. We occupied a corner table next to one of the fireplaces -- not gas -- real wood. Even with all the noise the children were making on this occasion we didn't feel as though we were really disturbing other pub goers because of the layout. The staff were extremely kind and friendly towards us...sometimes babies help this cause.

The food was average. The steak burger my wife ordered was lacking hope of flavour, but the house Merlot was excellent (I didn't catch the name). The lasagne contained real chunks of beef, but the pasta was cooked quite right. The rocket on the side was wonderfully spicy. They brought out a special plate of plain noodles on the side for our girls. When they brought out the wrong side, beans, for the children's meal they seemed shocked they got it wrong, however they were quick to correct it and bring out peas. Some of their other special for evening meal included venison, sea bass and moroccan lamb.

It cost about 38 pounds for 2 main meals, 1 childrens meal, 1 side, 1 desert, 2 alcoholic beverages and 1 bottle of apple juice.....which I believe is fairly average.

I would consider coming here again, though maybe next time we might stick to a drink and dessert.

1. Treetop Walkway. Search the web for the Xstrata Treetop Walkway you will find countless images showing this graceful steel structure nestled into the treetops. However in winter the perspective is quite different. The walkway is visible from more locations within the park as it is no longer shielded by the foliage.

The structure itself becomes more of the attraction providing a great viewing platform for miles around. While the spring and summer will allow you to enjoy the trees themselves, the ultimate purpose for this attraction, the winter will free you from the crowds to get a breath of fresh air 18 metres up.

2. Flowers. While flowers are harder to come by during winter, the tropical greenhouses still offer a view into what the foliage is like at other locations in the world. The scarcity of flowers seems to create a certain specialness around those that grace the fauna. It is almost as if they had to work extra hard and it is evident in their presence.

3. Tea Time. Stepping into the Orangery away from the chilly air and pulling a warm mug to your lips must be among the delights.

4. Avoiding the crowds. It shouldn't be a surprise but most people will not bursting to get in the gate during the coldest months of the year. For those that have a certain sense of adventure this provides the opportunity to escape the hustle and pace of daily life without having to wrestle the crowds in the process. Moments of quietness and serenity can be found.

In the U.S. fireworks are most closely associated with the celebration of the 4th of July, Independence Day. In the U.K., fireworks ring through the sky around Guy Fawkes Night, the 5th of November. The celebrations are a result of the the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 where Guy Fawkes prepared the explosives for a group of provincial English Catholics King James the I of England. They were attempting to destroy the Protestant aristocracy by basically blowing everybody up. So much for a noble story.

Hopefully next year, the other children will be able to sleep through the night as well.

The initial impression is overwhelmingly positive, benefiting from a curving drive along a pebble road beside the pond in the front garden. The main stone building is lovingly restored with a automatic sliding glass entry door that seems of a different age as it disappears into the side as you approach. The lobby is warm and comfortable with a calm sense of luxury. Dining guests can arrive early and enjoy the bar before being seated.

For lunch we were seated in the light filled conservatory that overlooks the golf course. Our party of ten was seated quickly along the windows, which had been open to benefit from the breezes. Unfortunately it had also covered our table and cutlery with a fine layer of dust. While the bread plates were replaced upon request, the rest remained. The menu was varied including pigeon, duck, steak, chicken and venison. The service was ok, but the server seemed irritated by a few special requests.

Our dinner took place in the side dining room as we were told the conservatory was fully booked. Oddly enough while we were there 6:30-8:30 pm. on a Saturday the conservatory remained no more than half full, so we weren't sure why we were relegated to the side. It seemed like we were relegated to second class service as well. We ordered drinks at the beginning which only arrived about 45 minutes later, about half way through our dinner after several follow up requests. From the time we receive the dessert menu until the food came was over 35 minutes. In general there seemed to be sufficient staff, but were not much interested in our party of 10. The menu remained unchanged from the previous week as well.

The overall food quality -- fantastic -- among the best we enjoyed in the area. In spite of the dodgy service we would consider returning for a lunch in the conservatory to enjoy the view, atmosphere and food.
The list gives you a good idea of which countries are acceptable and have suitable plans. If an overseas transfer is not possible, you would leave the money invested in the UK, and draw your pension and tax free cash when you reach retirement from the UK and have it paid into your overseas bank account.

The list of "recognised overseas pension schemes" that applies to the U.S. is as follows.

Ambernard SEP-IRA (FBO) Simon Hayes

AVM, LP Profit Sharing Plan

Citibank NA IRA

Currie & Brown Inc 401(K) Plan & Trust

Engraft PSPI

Fidelity Investments 401K Pension Plan

Hospital & Medical Foundation of Paris, Inc Tax Deferred Annuity Plan

Kraft Energy Systems, Inc. 401 (k) Plan & Trust

National Financial Services / Fidelity Management Trust Co. Custodian of Premiere Select

Simplified Employee Pension Plan (SEP-IRA)

Prism USA Holdings Inc 401(K) Plan

Squirrel Deferred Benefit Pension Plan

Trafigura AG 401 (k) Savings Plan

Whitehouse Post Productions, LLC 401(k) Plan

You asked me to confirm the current legislation regarding triviality. This is where 100% of your accrued pension is payable as a lump sum (25% is tax free and the rest is taxed). This will only be permissible if you have less than 1% of the lifetime allowance (total) in UK pension schemes. The lifetime allowance is currently 1.65 million and so the triviality threshold is £16,500.

If you are in the UK for several years or choose to save a high percentage of your income it is likely that the above mentioned threshold will be exceeded. However if you are here for a shorter, say 2-3 years, and your company will contribute to your pension fund it is an extra bit of income that shouldn't be passed up, especially as when you return home the money can follow you.

Finally, I was reassured of financial protection, should the insurance company fold, under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

<!--

The list gives you a good idea of which countries are acceptable and have suitable plans. If an overseas transfer is not possible, you would leave the money invested in the UK, and draw your pension and tax free cash when you reach retirement from the UK and have it paid into your overseas bank account. The list of "recognised overseas pension schemes" that applies to the U.S. is as follows. Ambernard SEP-IRA (FBO) Simon HayesAVM, LP Profit Sharing PlanCitibank NA IRACurrie & Brown Inc 401(K) Plan & TrustEngraft PSPIFidelity Investments 401K Pension PlanHospital & Medical Foundation of Paris, Inc Tax Deferred Annuity PlanKraft Energy Systems, Inc. 401 (k) Plan & TrustNational Financial Services / Fidelity Management Trust Co. Custodian of Premiere SelectSimplified Employee Pension Plan (SEP-IRA)Prism USA Holdings Inc 401(K) PlanSquirrel Deferred Benefit Pension PlanTrafigura AG 401 (k) Savings PlanWhitehouse Post Productions, LLC 401(k) Plan You asked me to confirm the current legislation regarding triviality. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>money, expatriate, insurance</itunes:keywords>

Picking Blackberries is a Family Treat

Last summer we enjoyed blackberries to our full; freshly picked and bit squooshy, frozen for later use, simmered into jam or my favourite-baked in warm pie with a bit of cream on top! Now blackberry season has arrived again and the girls ask to go picking almost on a daily basis. The berry bushes just across the way offer a great opportunity to fill our mouths with their sweet, sometimes tart flavour.

Last season it was suggested by the Daily Mail that Blackberry picking may be in decline; that "gone are the lazy summer days young families spent picking their way through wild brambles and rushing back to make delicious home-cooked treats." At this statement I balk. Even as I write this my ever resourceful wife has baked another great pie which is cooling on the children's picnic table- and I must say the wafting aroma is making my tummy groan.

I have been amazed at how prevalent the blackberry is and opportunities for picking are probably not far from your front door. Even on my walk to the tube station in Stanmore I've been able to enjoy a few choice picks early in the morning. Checking local parks is usually a good bet, possibly a a nature reserve or head for one of the designated walking routes around the outskirts of London. Tom was kind enough to share the joy of his berry picking experience with the rest of us, described as

If you need any further reasons to get out and enjoy the outdoors-- try comparing the cost. You'll find free Blackberries that will likely be more flavourful than those found in the supermarkets.
Last week I passed the "Life in the UK" exam and thought I would just pass on a few tips and relate some of my experience. Read on, but you'll be disappointed if you are looking for sample questions. They make sure you promise to keep it a secret.

I scheduled the exam for Great Portland Street London. You can find the list of test centres and other helpful information at the official Home Office website . Unfortunately you cannot book the exam on the website so you will have to phone. You are advised to take exact fee in cash to the test centre with you -- 33.28. It used to be 34 even, but thanks to the reduction in VAT you now get to carry change around. I brought exact change with me for which they were very thankful, however a few other needed change and it did not seem to be a major problem. What was a problem though was not bring proper identification. I chose to take my passport which was fine, however at least one individual was turned away for not being able to show acceptable identification .

I arrived at 9:15 for the 10:00 a.m. test time. First I signed in at the reception desk, was given a number and then asked to seat in the test waiting area. When they called #3 I went into a side room with the test centre to officially log-in for this test. This consists of your details being entered into the computer and then confirmed and agreed by you. It took about 5 minutes and then I went back out to the waiting area. They repeated this process with all 10 of the individuals taking the exam. This took us up to about 10 a.m., at which time we were asked to file into the testing room.

Three staff were on hand to oversee and guide us through the exam. We need our ID's on the desk in front of us throughout. First we had the opportunity to run through a practice exam to understand how the software works. This took about 2 minutes and then I raised my hand so that a staff member could come over and help me begin the actual exam. Though the exam is 24 questions and you have up to 45 minutes, if you know the material it should only take about 10-15 minutes.

The preparation I had done for the exam was sufficient, but it could have been more thorough. I read through the 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship ' as recommended and then spent about 2 hours reviewing the summaries. I did pass the exam, however I know there were at least 3 questions I got wrong. It is important to pay close attention to percentages and numbers. There was more precise questions than I thought there would be.

The timing of my taking the exam was mixed. It has been 20 months since I arrived in the UK. I would have benefited from some of the information learned while studying for the exam...such as making registering for a GP a priority. At the same time, because I have waited so long to take the exam some of the information was known through experience -- a much more impressionable way to learn.

Now that I have passed, I can look forward to paying more money to acquire indefinite leave to remain (Permanent Residence).
<!--
I pleaded my case with the attendant and explained that my wife and three children all used this GP and have done so for nearly that full year and half. I've never need the NHS before now. She went away for a few minutes and then came back to kindly tell me that they would make an exception even though they are technically not supposed to. There are rules in place to prevent immigrants from mis-using the system. If you looked at the NHS Direct website you would think it was set-up to support immigration as the site is available in 12 languages.

After registering I requested to see the doctor immediately as I had been suffering from a chronic headache for five days. I was told they didn't have any appointments available, however the duty doctor would call me in about an hour. So I went home and waited...and waited. Around 2 hours later the doctor did call and we discussed all my symptoms over the phone. He then prescribed Immigrain to me over the phone to see if that would solve my problem, if it was a migraine. He explained to me that in the UK they practice medicine in a way where if they are not sure what they problem is they will try treating something and see if it works...sort of trial and error. It reminded me of Doctor House.

Several hours later I had the prescription in hand and swallowed the first pill. It did nothing. So I waited the four hours directed and then took another. Still, it did nothing. A few hours later I took some Advil and was given some relief. In the morning the headached had subsided and was only a nagging "hum". After another day or two it seemed to fade altogether.

So what was my problem? I don't know? They don't know? But at least it is temporarily gone. At least I am now registered with a GP and will have a fighting chance to be seen in the future. Or I may try to go directly to a BUPA hospital.

This was an excellent choice for a fine family meal, although I would necessarily call it a family restaurant.

There are two sections, both a pub (with outdoor seating as well) and a restaurant. We'll focus on the restaurant because that is what we enjoyed.

We arrived at about 5:30 on a Wednesday...not exactly peak time, however it took about 5 minutes before any of the staff even acknowledged our arrival. Eventually we were guided to a seating area which was well suited for us. It was in corner out of the way and the cushioned chairs had full sides so the children couldn't slide off. Even though there is quite a lot of seating capacity in the restaurant it is well laid out so that there are lots of smaller groupings of tables divided into alcoves, raised platforms and open areas.

The service continued to be quite slow as we got going in placing our orders. We asked for a spoon and it seemed to be forgotten. The server's mind seemed quite distant from where we were so we tried to win her over with kindness (lots of please's and thankyou's) and in the end mostly succeeded by the time we left.

The food was EXCELLENT. We started off with a plate of nachos and toppings that was just enough to get our mouths watering. My wife and I ordered the 12 oz. portion of sirloin steak (one well done and the other medium) and it was cooked to perfection. The side vegetables -- mushrooms, greens and a unique onion roll-- were all quite tasty. Our two little ones shared a plate of pasta and sauce, but were most impressed by sharing some of our chips. We were all to filled to fancy a dessert.

The children were well behaved which made it a delight, especially since there were no activities-- crayons, etc.--provided to entertain them with.

In the end the service was questionable, the food and atmosphere were both excellent. Overall, we felt it was good value for money.
This is all thanks to the fact that rather than using a land line connection, mobile broadband operates over 3G mobile telecommunications networks.

Pretty much every developed country in the world has 3G networks available in some areas, and mostly urban and suburban places will have good 3G reception, though countries like Australia have telecoms providers who claim to have 3G networks available for 99% of the population. This level is currently higher than that available in the UK, but the 3G network coverage is different for each service provider. The mobile broadband services offered by T-Mobile, Orange, 3 Mobile and Vodafone all allow customers who have purchased their contract in the UK to connect to 3G networks in selected foreign countries, though the cost for doing so will vary depending on the network as we shall discuss below. If you are an expatriate living abroad or thinking about moving out of the UK then mobile broadband can be a really good option for internet connectivity in a foreign country. Let`s look at the offers available on the main networks and why you might consider using their services.

3 Mobile - In the UK 3 offer some of the best value mobile broadband packages and using their mobile broadband abroad is also good value. In selected areas, including Hong Kong, Australia, Ireland and Italy it will cost you just 10p per megabyte used within your monthly data allowance, and once that limit has been reached it will cost you Ł3 per additional megabyte. All of their contracts include a free mobile broadband USB dongle, but the maximum download speed that their networks are capable of is 3.6Mbps which isn`t the fastest out there.

Orange - Roaming charges in the EU with Orange are Ł4.11 per megabyte, but access to Wi-Fi hotspots in places like hotels and cafes is included for free in some areas which will be a bonus for some.

T-Mobile - Within the EU T-Mobile have a great value flat rate of Ł1.50 per megabyte, so if you want a good pay as you go mobile broadband deal, available in a range of countries and ideal for light usage then this may be for you.

Alternatively you might consider signing up with one of the local carriers in the country in which you settle. In the USA for example, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and AOL amongst others offer mobile broadband starting from under $20, and in Australia local telecoms company Optus and Big Pond have great value offers that trump most British deals out there.

Choosing a UK Mobile Broadband provider should be made simpler if you use a price comparison website and think about your needs before you start to shop. Whether you want cheap roaming charges or a large monthly data allowance, searching online should be your first port of call.

- I should have known the morning was going to go poorly when traffic was snarled by an accident. It took me 15 minutes to go the 1 mile to Stanmore Medical Centre. They have a small car park in the rear of the building off Crowshott Avenue. Arriving at about 8:35 a.m. I briefly waited in the line of 5 people to advance to the reception window. I asked to register and was informed this could only be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 10 and 11. Even with a little persistence I was assured there was no other way for me to register -- "...they were working people too." While waiting to receive the registration forms one of her colleagues asked me "Are you ok?" I responded "No, not really." To this she walked away and muttered that "she was sorry she asked." I found this to be very odd as this is supposed to be a GP and of course most people were not going to be "ok". Afterall, that is why most people would come isn't it?

Destination 2: Walk-In Centre -- Not having had success registering at the GP, I was told I could try the Walk-In Centre in Edgware which was meant for people like me who are in-between GP's (or don't yet have one as the case may be). I promptly drove across to the Edgware Hospital and parked in the lower car park. In accordance with my day, the pay and display machine was not working in that section so I had to walk to the upper car park, pay, and then return down the hill to my car to display. Once inside the wait line to the reception desk was about 5 people again and moved quite quickly. After filling out a short form (because it was my first time at the walk-in centre) I was told to have a seat amongst the 50 or so chairs. I took the opportunity to read, but ended up moving a few times to sit as far away as possible from all the snarling, coughing and sneezing sick people hovering everwhere -- they of course were not "ok" either!

After a short wait of 10 minutes my name was called and I was ushered into a nearby area. The nurse took my vitals; blood pressure, temperature, pulse and blood sugar levels. I was then given a small paper slip and instructed to return at 12:20 for an appointment with the Doctor.

Destination 3: Return to Walk-In Centre to meet with Doctor -- At my appointed time I returned to the walk-in centre. After handing in my paper slip and checking in again I sat down and waited for about 10 minutes until my name was called. This time I was met by the doctor who led me to the examination room. This was a quiet, generously sized room away from the noise and distraction of the waiting room. Here I was asked a few more questions. I was assured that all my vitals were fine. The doctor examined my ears, eyes, mouth and the side of my head and neck. I was told there was no sign of an infection and that I should stop taking the pain pills I have been popping over the last few days as they may be part of the problem. I shouldn't drink any caffeine. If I needed something for the pain I should take dissolvable aspirin. That was it. That was the final diagnosis --or non-diagnosis! If the pain persisted I shoud come back or register with the GP and get an appointment.

Destination 4 - Visit GP to Register and schedule appointment -- As tomorrow is a Tuesday, one of the days I can register with the GP, I may as well do the deed and have my first appointment. So I will likely take at least another half day off work and try to get some useful treatment that can identify the problem...not just shrug it off and offer aspirin.

At the end of my day my journey has led me back to where I started. My head is suffering from a banging sensation as much as ever, I've missed a day of work and I have received no useful help. On the bright side I should have more to write about the GP after tomorrow. I'll let you know how sorting out the GP works, or doesn't as the case might be. Then if need be I could call in the reserve forces -- BUPA, private insurance that offers top-up treatment.

<!--
Other news publications were filled with fear-raising language

Next week's G20 summit will be one of the largest and most challenging operations British police have undertaken

All police leave in the city has been suspended and businesses are being advised to cancel unnecessary meetings

an almost unprecedented level of activity going on

City workers have been advised to dress down to avoid drawing attention to themselves

The terrorism threat level remains severe in Britain

It was during a G8 meeting in Scotland in July 2005 that four British Islamists carried out London's worst peacetime attack with four suicide bombings on trains and a bus which killed 52 commuters.

-- Excerpts from London Police prepare for G20 demonstrations

Is this written to strike fear into us? or prudence? London is arguably the capital city of the world and as long as it is it will continue to draw attention from all aspects. It gives those who are angry a direction to channel their anxieties. If something takes place in London it becomes world news.
Fortunately, it appears the first march was completed in relative peace. It is predicted to heat up though later in the week with the G20 Meltdown in the City , Climate Camp in the City, and Stop the War Coalition on 1st April - having been dubbed Financial Fools Day.

There is likely to be tension flying high when the G20 kick off their meetings on the 2nd April. A few steps of prudence would be advisable over the next few days to stay clear of any possible trouble. If you don't have to travel to London, put off your visit for another week when the chaos will have subsided.

The Bridgnorth District Council suggests that the terrain is good for "pushchairs and wheelchairs alike." It is possible there are other areas we did not cover, but having entered from the Kerry Avenue Entrance on the south and exited out an unmarked exit half-way up Dennis Lane we would not recommend this for any other than the able bodied. While the terrain is certainly not challenging -- mainly gentle slopes; the pathways can sometimes be muddy, bumpy grassy knolls or bridges crossing streams.

The trails are not marked well. I had looked on a map prior to our start, however we meandered on some of the smaller trails and never fully regained our place. The park is a nice size at 35 hectares, however manageable if you get off track. There were a few markers on post that identified the "London Loop ", but it didn't help since I didn't know what that was. A little investigation reveals this is a nearly complete pedestrian route around the outer edged of London. The signs we saw linked the London Loop with Stanmore Station. The maps available suggest that maybe signage and more clear maps would benefit this initiative

The sound of traffic from nearby roads was still audible in most parts of the park. Particularly as one walks further north in the park, the constant hum from the M1 became more distinct. That being said, the beautiful tunes being shared by a variety of birds is more the theme. The only other wildlife we saw on this family walk were a few bumblebees enjoying the just blossoming flowers. The colours were just beginning to erupt from the landscape with the first green shoots sprouting from the trees. Wildflowers spotted the grassy patches and a few trees had new flowers.

Lest we be without a little history in part of England, this site was also previously occupied by the RAF, similarly to Bentley Priory. This site served as an RAF training base during WWII and continued to be used by the RAF Bridgnorth until 1964.

Overall, those who have made this park possible have done an appreciable job. However I can't help the feeling that I was in the woods behind someone's home rather than in a park. Thus far I would rather frequent Bentley Priory or Stanmore Commons as they seem to have stronger air about them as quality outdoor spaces.

The terrain is mildly hilly with a variety of trails depending upon your level of adventure. With three young children we kept mostly to the main paths with a few side diversions. The girls enjoyed chasing after a peacock butterfly, with its fabulous colour display. It seemed to glide across the grasses growing up to soak in the sun.

Wearing our sneakers, we were able to avoid most of the mud. However, considering it hadn't rained in some time and still some areas were quite damp, a good pair of boots would certainly be appropriate. There are several small streams that run through the woods and heath with beautiful stone pebbles rounded through time.

On one large open grass area we let the children just run and play. What a joy it is to see them picking blades of grass, imagining and even talking to a bumblebee! Then in the distance we spotted a well located and still strong tree swing. We all gave it a go and laughed at ourselves.

If you are looking for a day out with the family and the opportunity to relax closer to nature without venturing too far from the city, consider Stanmore Common. We spent about 1 1/2 hours slowly walking the trails. Next time we may bring our lunch and spread a picnic over a grassy area.
<!--

In this case one of the hot news items from the day is the anger that parents are expressing over schools being closed. I'm sure each of us expats who come from different countries have our stories about how our respective regions dealt with adverse weather. For a country like England we shouldn't really be surprised about surprising weather.

If you are from the northeast U.S. where I grew up then these winter conditions we are experiencing in the U.K. would seem quite ordinary. If you have lived in California there are probably stories that could be told about how residents and authorities deal with earthquakes...or fires...or mudslides (It must be tough being a Californian). If you have lived in the southeast U.S. stories of having to prepare and evacuate for hurricanes are probably part of you're vocabulary.

The fact is weather is one of the most unpredictable aspects of our lives. Mankind has tried to control everything, but it frustrates him that he can't control the weather. Is it so bad that many of us have had to pause for a day or two in the ordinary rigour of our lives. Our children have been able to laughs and play in the fluffy white stuff. It has been noted a storm like this has not occurred since 1991. So rather than getting angry about, lets enjoy the moment...before it melts away.
<!--

can seem a bit awkward for those who have a license from another country. I certainly felt awkward sitting in the waiting room with a group of 18 year olds eager to get their wheels. But I was not be intimidated - I had learned the MSM (mirrors, signal, maneuver) principle and was ready to go!

I initially booked a block of 6 hours of driving lessons with BSM for their £99 special. They provided an experienced instructor, Eddy, who was able to patiently guide and prepare me to take the practical driving exam. I had never had a lesson before when I got my first license in the U.S. Immediately I became aware that the methodology of driving and passing the practical exam in the UK is different than the States. This was made abundantly clear at the very beginning of my first lesson. Here are 5 of the key differences (or maybe just bad habits I acquired over the years).

Positioning your hands correctly on the steering wheel- Imagine driving for 15 years only to be told that you don't use the most basic element of the car properly! I was dumbfounded. I needed to learn to use different positions with my hands on the wheel. It was so awkward at first. I felt completely embarrassed. Fortunately a road trip back to the States and 1200 miles of driving provided the needed time to relearn steering.

Looking over your shoulder when reversing- I had become so comfortable using all three mirrors while reversing that I rarely looked over my shoulder. The examiner will watch when you are performing your maneuvers to see that you look over shoulder correctly when reversing and checking the blind spots.

Using the hand brake- When I learned to drive manual I was never taught to use the hand brake while stopped at a traffic light or similar situation. I had simply kept my foot on the brake and then when it was time to move timed the break, clutch, accelerator transition so that I didn't coast. Not good enough. Rule of Thumb: When stopped for more than 5 seconds place the hand brake on.

Checking Mirrors- I usually did this without thinking, but now I needed to do it even more so, I had to think about it deliberately. If I needed to turn left; check passenger side mirror, then signal, then turn. If I need to brake then I must first check my rearview mirror.

Location, Location, Location- The driving exam will last for about 45 minutes. Some areas have road systems that are less challenging and therefore the chance of you passing your exam is much better at some locations. Each driving centre and pass rate has been listed - so be sure to test at a centre with a high pass rate.

In the end I used six hours of lessons and then passed the exam with no marks against me on the first try. If you have a foreign license and need to take the practical driving exam it will certainly come easier to you as an experienced driver rather than a novice. However it would still be recommended to take a few lessons so that a professional instructor can point out the important things to look for and possibly areas of your driving where bad habits have developed.

At the end the total cost of acquiring my UK driving license was slightly more (about £50) than originally calculated since they cancelled my first scheduled exam and I was responsible for some of the instructors time. But it was all definitely worth it. And to celebrate we took a road trip to through the Lakes District, Loch Tay, Kielder Forest and Edinburgh.

<!--
Though it is currently absent of a playground, I was surprised to find the rich history (originally published by CPEA) that the park has to offer. It began with occupation by early Roman potters. Today it contain the enclosed George V Memorial Garden. The Sunday in January we were there this area was closed off. Peering through the gates one can imagine that this area abounds with beauty, color and life during the spring and summer months. There is also a classical garden building referred to as the temple (that is what it resembles). The toilets and maintenance area could use a little refurbishment. The Acorn Tennis Club and fields used by the Arnold House School enclose the southern side of the park.

We entered the park from the entrance off of Howberry Road and walked on the gravel path to the south entrance from Donnefield Ave. On either side there are large open expanses of lawn. The tube line is just a short bit away and the trains are just visible through the surrounding trees. It would be an excellent place to kick a ball around in the middle of summer when the lawn is dry. This park offers the potential to become an excellent haven for the public and if the plan is implemented its future appears to be as long and rich as its history.

The highlight of our walk was standing on the bridge that crosses over the jubilee tube line between Howberry Road and the park. We waved the to train as it approach stanmore station and the engineer waved and tooted the horn at us. This made the children all smile and almost forget that the playground is ready for use yet.

Tip: There is a wooded gravel/dirt path leading from Marsh Lane to the Howberry Road entrance of Canons Park. While it is a very pleasant walk during the day, I wouldn't recommend using it at night. View on LiveMaps.

<!--

We're a true property search engine. Estate agents don't have to come to us with a list of properties that
they'd like to promote online, we go to them. Or rather, our
ultra-clever software does. It tracks down almost every single estate
agent in the UK and scours their websites, coming back with a nearly
perfect list of what's available to buy or rent."

The up side is that most of the properties available are brought to you. this one site pretty much covers it all. The selection filters are excellent and easy to use. The down side is that each listing provides a link to a separate site. Each site is in its own format and so it can be a bit of a ramble navigating through each property.

This site should give Rightmove some real competition and make estate agents think twice before they pay out fees for listings.
