Recommendations: Furnas (our favorite place on the whole island) Azores Treetop Park (ziplines and ropes courses in the forest around Lagoa das Furnas) The owners are amazing people and made us feel like family. Poça da Dona Beija Hotsprings Espinha.Come – restaurant in the square for excellent Azorean lunch – try the fresh cheese! Steamed Corn from the souvenir shops – it’s cooked in the volcanic vents and is a sweet snack. The kids loved it. Salto do Cabrito waterfall – short drive and short (but steep) walk to the waterfall. Ribeira Granda/Maia Solar de Lalém – historic buildings repurposed into a cozy feeling hotel.
Emilia Romagna is a perfect choice for a low key summer Italian vacation with amazing food. The cities Parma, Modena, and Bologna all sit within it’s borders and are the birthplaces of some of Italy’s most famous foods. Emilia Romagna sits right in the middle of Italy, surrounded by the ever popular regions Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, and Veneto. It’s a relatively quiet region of Italy, even in the depths of the European summer. If I were planning a summer trip to Italy, I would include Emilia Romagna simply due to the volume of amazing food that comes from this region. Tortellini, Ravioli, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar…. Do I need to continue? I took the above photos on one week roadtrip through Parma, Modena, the village of Fontanellato and its castle and bright green moat, and […]

Bohinj Slovenia is one of my favorite places I’ve ever traveled. Bold statement, I know, but there was something about this very chill summer lakeside utopia that enchanted me. When we planned a trip to Slovenia, I went into it thinking we’d stay in Bohinj purely because that’s where I found inexpensive 2-bedroom accomodations for my family. We’d see Bohinj, but mostly we’d spend our time over at Lake Bled. I was so wrong about that. Our experience in Lake Bled was a short hour long stop over on the long drive from the Venice airport. Bohinj was far better than we imagined so we never left until it was time to head back to Venice. There were less tourists and it was far less touristy. The mountains and cliffs were bigger and more dramatic. […]

Zurich West is the place to be in Zurich – it used to be the industrial district and is currently transitioning into the cool new gentrified millenial hotspot in the city. This is the story with past industrial areas in most cities these days, but as I wasn’t expecting to see anything like this neighborhood in such a historic and traditional city, it felt different. Unexpected yes, but a little more fresh than just “another version of Williamsburg” or something. More Photos of Zurich HERE

Venice, Italy in the summer might be literally drowned in tourists, but it is still as beautiful and disneyland-ish as it ever was. A family trip to Slovenia brought us to Venice (and the Venice airport) for a short visit in the height of a sticky hot July. While I know we contributed to Venice’s tourist problem simply by being there, we were in and out quickly and tried to spend our time further from the center of the city. Take aways? Venice in July is HOT and HUMID. It feels like Disneyland sometimes – thanks to the gaggles of tourists but also because it feels like the charm shouldn’t be a real thing. Also, it is not a great place for strollers or toddlers (I was very aware of the ease with which a […]

I love taking Bodie on vacation. She gets really anxious when shes stuck in Brooklyn for too long, so we try to get her out of the city as often as possible. Sometimes it’s to visit family, sometimes it’s for a hike or a camping trip, sometimes it’s a dog trip to Eva’s Play Pups farm in Pennsylvania. But when she’s really really lucky, it’s a trip to beach. Delaware was awesome. We thought about just going back and doing the same trip again, but we thought it would be fun to try a different beach and different trip. This time, to Mystic, Connecticut. Mystic’s dog beach called Esker Point Beach. It’s not very big but it does allow dogs all year long to visit the beach all day long. This is pretty rare around these parts, […]
