From Trujillo, we just barely squeezed in a few days in the Cordillera Blanca region around Huaraz on our way back to Lima. Unfortunately, the weather here was less than perfect, especially after coming from the beautifully temperate ‘Eternal Spring’ of Trujillo and the Northern Coast. The weather was so bad actually, that we cut our trip here short after only a few days and with barely a glimpse of the famed mountain peaks we had come to see. That will have to wait for a revisit…

Monasterio San Francisco

Then, onward to Lima- Our last stop. Back to the beginning so to speak. It seemed like such an amazingly long time since we had stepped off the plane five months ago onto the South American continent for the first time, surrounded by hoards of Taxi drivers yelling in Spanish and barely being able to offer a word in response. Now, five months later, and a few thousand kilometers behind us, we felt so much wiser. So much more experienced. We had been so many places, experienced so much, it didn’t seem possible that it had been only five months. We had done so much more than just traveled through Peru. We had survived it. We learned the language, learned to navigate this crazy country, the busses, the crowded markets… We’d gotten lost, robbed, climbed mountains, and swam in Amazonian rivers. Peru wasn’t a place for a leisurely vacation. It was a place that took some figuring out. But once that happened, it had gotten into our hearts and it was going to be a hard place to leave.

Monasterio San Francisco

The crowded, smoggy streets of Lima that on the first visit seemed impossible to stand, now welcomed us back as something familiar after such a long journey- Weary travelers from ‘out there’… The rest of Peru. It was a whole other world out there, full of dirt roads, damp alleyways, crumbling buildings, humid jungles, empty deserts, and rugged mountains. This was back to civilization. Back to hot showers, clean sheets, supermarkets, and internet! And soon- Back Home.

Our last few days in Lima were mostly a blur- Spent taking care of some last minute errands and collecting some great things to bring back home with us. But there were a few moments to sit and reflect what we had experienced throughout this whole trip. I starting making a long list of all the things that I would miss: Things modern civilization and the western world can never provide. Among all the mixed feelings of leaving this place, I think what sticks with me most is the feeling that that this place and our time here has truly changed me; That I wasn’t not going to be the same after all of this… And it was the first time I had felt that way since I left home to travel to Europe for the first time at sixteen… And I have covered a lot of roads since then.

Then suddenly it was time to get in a taxi to the airport. Suddenly time to ask ourselves, do we really want to do this? Are we really leaving? What if we just don’t get on the plane? And I think a few times we did seriously consider it. Or at least I did. But in the end we knew it was time: That our incredible wealth of experiences would just have to last until next time, and that we had some important things to attend to on the other side of the world…

Sunset over Trujillo

Adobe Friezes at Chan Chan

Hot, steamy Iquitos was one of our last stops in Peru. After five days on a stinky boat surrounded by hundreds of other sweaty bodies, we were glad to set foot on (relatively) solid land again. Iquitos is the largest city in the world which is not reachable by any road. The only way in (or out) is by river on the Amazon or Ucayali, or a plane over miles of thick jungle. It’s an awesome feeling being surrounded by unspoiled jungle in every direction for literally hundreds of kilometers before the next city of any size. Unbroken only by thatched riverside villages, the occasional sugar cane field, or banana plantations, the jungle literally swallows you up. Makes you feel so small and insignificant… Lost out in the middle of such a beautifully wild environment.

Iquitos Street Scene

We stayed in Iquitos about a week and a half in the end, but wished we could have stayed another few weeks longer exploring the neighboring jungles, small villages, lakes, rivers, and beaches. It would have been a great place to settle down for a while, with plenty of things to explore. The city has a definitively Amazonian vibe, but still manages to offer enough luxuries for the weary traveler, vibrant culture, crumbling Colonial mansions with their colorful azulejos (Hand painted tiles imported from Portugal) from the Rubber-Boom days, and many opportunities to explore the surrounding forest and indigenous communities who make the upper Amazon basin their home.

Mercado de Plantes Medicinales, Bélen

As well, Iquitos is home to one of the biggest and most vibrant markets in all of Peru, near the floating neighborhood of Bélen. Here also, is the world famous Natural Medecine Market (Mercado de Plates Medicinales) full of an incredible variety of medicines, plants, tonics, for anything which may ail you- All straight from the surrounding jungles. Medicines which can be bought here for very little, are shipped all over the world to holistic clinics, healers, doctors, hospitals, and patients who can benefit from the Amazons’ incredible bounty of plant life. We stocked up on some last minute herbs and supplies to bring back with us, and to share with others back home.

Leaving Iquitos, we finally began the definitive long road home… Our time im Peru was coming soon to an end, but we still had some 1,800 kilometers to cover to make it to our flight in Lima- And of course, a few more stops to make on the way home.

Jungle of Hammocks

(A boat trip that is funny, a boat trip that is nice)”

I write this now, as we sit in Pucallpa’s port, waiting for the boat to leave for Iquitos: Perhaps today, perhaps tomorrow, or the next day. Things just work a little differantly here… We arrived in steamy Pucalla straight from the cool central Andes after a long eighteen-hour bus ride though what is supposed to be the most drug-infested area of Peru. About two in the morning, the bus was boarded by a police officer armed with a semi-automatic machine gun who asked for a “protection donation”. We knew we were going to be in for something interestesting in this deep jungle town… Pucallpa proved to hide adventure and interest in many unexpected places, and heat, humidity, and mosquitos aside, and incedibly beautiful place to interact with the people, the culture, and the landscape of the jungle.

Swimming from the Docks at Sunset

Lucho Romero with his wife and grandson.

Our first few days in Pucallpa, we were lucky enough to be introduced to Lucho Romero, a curandero from the area who has been working with medicinal plants and conducting Ayahuasca ceremonies for over 38 years. We spent a few days with him and his family in a truly unique Peruvian experience. He and his family welcomed us into thier home, and indeed, it felt like we had found our family. We ate fried bananas for breakfast, strange river fish for lunch, and were also able to participate in two beautiful ceremonies during which he worked with some of his local patients. It was a beautiful insight into traditional Amazonain plant medecine, and I feel like we left there with a new sense of meaning to our journey: Both where we had gone so far, as well as where we are headed (SOON HOME).

Lastenia Working on Embroidering

We also had the pleasure of visiting the nearby Shipibo community of San Francisco on Yarinacocha (lake). The Shipibo people are an indiginous culture in this area who use Ayahuasca culturally and medicinally from a very young age. They are incredibly warm, friendly people, and once again we were welcomed into the home of a beautifully smiling woman named Lastenia who mothered us like two of her own. Her husband is a Shipibo Curandero, and she works weaving beautiful embroidered textiles which are said to represent the canciones (songs) of Ayahuasca, which are said to come directly from the plants themselves. I have to admit being as bit of a toursit here, as I left with more ‘souveniers’ from here than in probably all my previous travels combined! The fabrics made by Lastenia and the other Shipibo people are simply beautiful, and I couldn’t resist taking a few memories of this beautiful culture home…

After a quick stop in the desert-oasis of Huacachina to break the long trip from Arequipa to Ayacucho, we got on yet another all-night bus bound for the Andean Highlands. We visited Ayacucho, the pretty colonial town of Huancavelica, and then a very quick stop in Huancayo… This was a great taste of traditional Peru, and a nice relief from the Gringo-Trail, visiting places very little touristed by outsiders. In Huancavelica for example, we were met by a curious crowd of children when we arrived, and all over town the people seemed extra-curious about what apparently were the only two gringos in town!

The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is a cloistered convent in Arequipa, originally built in the 16th century. The founder of the monastery was a rich widow; The tradition of the time indicated that the second son or daughter of a family would enter religious service, and the convent accepted only women from high-class Spanish families. Each nun at Santa Catalina had between one and four servants or slaves, and the nuns invited musicians to perform in the convent, gave parties and generally lived a lavish lifestyle. Each family paid a dowry at their daughter’s entrance to the convent, and the dowry paid to gain the highest status was 2,400 silver coins (equivalent to around $50,000 today).

Calle Sevilla

Later, in 1871, a strict Dominican nun was sent by Pope Pius IX to reform the monastery. She sent the rich dowries back to Europe, and freed all the servants and slaves, giving them the choice of remaining as nuns or leaving. In the 1960s, it was struck twice by earthquakes, severely damaging the structures, and forcing the nuns to build new accommodation next door. It was then restored before finally being opened to the public in 1969.

Blue and Red

We had intentionally arrived late in the afternoon so that we could have a chance to also visit the monestary for the one night per week that it is open to the public in the night time. However, after paying a fairly expensive price to enter so late in the day, they failed to inform us that that particular night was a special event and therefore it was not possible to visit the monestary during the night… So, our visit was cut unexpectedly short, and it was particularly disappointing since I had been planning for weeks to make some night photography there. Still, we did manage to get a few good photos there, as the architcture and alleyways are very beautiful. I wish we would have had a little more time, and for sure a few hours at night, and I think we could have come away with some even more pleasing photos.

Colca cayon, about 150km north from Arequipa, is a large canyon which at 4,160 m deep is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. Until a few years ago, this was believed to be the deepest canyon in the world: Now that title goes to the Cañon de Cotahuasi, just 100km to the west, which is deeper by some 150m or so. Still, Cañon del Colca was incredibly impressive in it’s own right; From tiny traditional villages, soaring condors overhead, and huge snow-capped mountains looming in the distance, to the backpacker-mecca of ‘The Oasis’ with its palm-shaded swimming pools in the bottom of the canyon- This was a great mix of rugged nature, culture, and relaxation.

Church in Cabanaconde

On the first day in the canyon, we met Kevin and Chini (who we had stayed with three months ago in Lima, and randomly bumped into again in Arequipa) in Chivay at the start of the canyon. After a quick night there, we set out the next day by foot to explore some of the smaller villages on the way from Chivay to Cabanaconde at the west end of the canyon. The colca river winds through impressive Inca terraces which are still in use by the villages today, and are reputedly the most extensive terrace system in all of Peru.

From Cabanaconde, we hiked down into the canyon to a place called ‘The Oasis’, which lies near the canyon floor almost 2000m below. Here, after three hours of steep, tiring, downhill walking, you arrive at a lush oasis of Palms, simple thatched huts, and swimming pools, punctuated by the steep canon walls towering thousands of feet overhead. Kevin and Chini had to climb back up the canyon that afternoon, to head back to Lima the next day. We stayed here for two nights, doing mostly nothing but enjoying the surroundings and the sunshine, and eating heaping plates of spaghetti served by our hosts every night.

From the Oasis, we hiked further into the Canyon passing the small village of Malata before continuing on to San Juan de Chuccho. On the way we walked though thick groves of cactus full of ripe fruit which of course we had to try! They were delicious, but as I was unlucky to discover, one has to be extra careful about the tiny spines- If you get too greedy and down’t clean them thoroughly before eating then, the tiny thorns will get stuck in your tounge and are impossible to remove! Lena spent a good half hour cleaning me up after my little incident… It was worth it though- the fruits were sweet and juicy which was perfect for the hot trail!

Colca Canon Early Morning

Cactus fruit past, we continued to Malata and then to San Juan, where we found a great camping spot for the night in a small, grassy meadow, just on the edge of the canyon wall. We stopped here early, in the meadow surrounded by giant cacti and trees covered in Spanish moss, to relax for a while and cook a much-needed hearty dinner of quinua and soup. Sitting in the bottom of the canyon as the sun set and the stars came out was so peaceful, and I wasn’t ready to leave. Staring at the stars and the canyon walls that night, I thought I could easily spend another few days there…

Lena on the Way Up

The next day though, we had to face the rough 3 1/2 hour trail climbing back to the top of the canyon. We were awake by 5:00 in hopes that we could beat the morning sun, but by 7:00 we were less than halfway up and the sun was already burning hot. Unfortunately, our heavy bags made this part of the trek even more difficult and the last hour or so of climbing, we were sweaty and our legs were shaking. We had to stop every 15 minutes or so during the last part of the climb to catch our breath and rest our tired legs. By the time we reached Cabanaconde again, Lena was ready to never see the canyon again, and both of us were so exhausted we were having trouble walking! We stopped in the first shop we passed and bought some much-needed bananas for our potassium fix before catching the bus for the bumpy ride back to Arequipa.

Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana… Well, Copacabana was neither literally or figuratively “The hottest spot north of Havana,” but it was an interesting place nonetheless to spend a few days ‘decompressing’ after our rough week lounging on the beach in Isla del Sol. The town itself is fairly bleak and touristy, except for the large 16th century Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana on the main square. Here you can see the interesting custom of blessing vehicles: Drunk drivers from all around come to have thier cars covered in flowers and dowsed in champagne in hopes that god will protect they and thier humble passengers…

Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana at Night

Also of note in Copacabana, is that Lena was finally able to get her hands on one of the funny little hats all the indiginous old women wear in southern Peru and in Bolivia… She has been wanting one for weeks, and after a day of searching and some hard bargaining, we were able to secure the perfect hat at a nice price! She’s already gotten plenty of comments and the old women really love seeing the little Gringa sporting thier style. Doesn’t she just look delightfully Bohemian, Er, Bolivian…
