You guys asked for a tutorial on how I travel so cheap. Well, this one is just for you.

Another shot from my recent sunset hike to Clouds Rest. This time I wanted to frame the image showing both Half Dome and the actual summit of Cloud Rest. Just an inch past that rock in the lower right, is a mile long slide down a continuous granite slope toward the base of Tenaya Canyon.

About the Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airport (IATA: BNE, ICAO: YBBN) is the sole passenger airport serving Brisbane and the third busiest in Australia, after Sydney and Melbourne Airports. Located in the suburb with the same name, the airport serves the city of Brisbane and the surrounding metropolitan area.

This is a picture of the Tomb of Humayun in Delhi. I arrived during Diwali, the biggest annual festival that involves a burning a lot of things. Most of the tombs, mausoleums, temples, and the like were surprisingly empty, giving me clean access to cool places like this without dopey tourists getting in the way of sweet photography.

It is the next morning now and the air in Delhi is covered with the smoke from last night’s festivities… There is this acrid smell of stale carbon and it’s not exactly like a trip to Sedona. Luckily, I am getting out of the city today because my hosts have been kind enough to give me a ride up to Agra to visit the fort and Taj Mahal… more pictures coming soon, so stay tuned!

I feel a bit like a British explorer, surrounded by my cadre of Cambodians at $18 a day. They drive me around, carry my tripod, bring me water when I am thirsty, and seem anxious for me to colonize the area. A member of my cadre woke me up early this morning at 5 AM.

I probably should not have been standing in the middle of this frozen pond.

But when you are raised in Texas and you rarely get to see anything frozen, you get fascinated by large frozen bodies of water. I just stared at it for a long time like a deer that’s never seen headlights in the forest. I felt the saying, “When in Rome”, and somehow replaced it with “When in Reykjavik…”

I slowly shuffled my feet out to the middle, using my tripod as an Imperial Hoth Walker to secure my footing. Once I got to the right spot for the lens, I ripped off a few shots before heading over to the safely of the shore.

It was an amazing week out with Jack Horner and his crew. We could not have been any more remote! Out deep in the wheat fields of Montana, we were met every morning with amazing sunrises and the evenings had these surreal sunsets.

I’ll post more about the dinosaur dig, what we discovered, and all sorts of things in coming months… it was quite a trip and Jack was every bit the hero my son envisioned!

After a nice sunset, the clouds turned dark, it was time for a long exposure… the tides were just right. The key to getting this right was to exposure for long enough to pick up the tree reflections.

I was lucky enough to be in a helicopter over Chicago at sunset. A big thanks to Fiona and our pilots Bill and Jeff. They took the door off the helicopter for me, which sounds like a good idea until you are experiencing 100 MPH of chopper backwash while hanging out trying to get this kind of shot!

It was a fun day. We stayed up for a few hours and circled around the city several times. I got hundreds of amazing shots. I haven’t had time to process any of them except for this one… but I wanted to go ahead and get it up since I know the Twitter and Facebook crowd has been waiting on it since I mentioned it on there. Also my mom was very worried about the whole door-off-the-helicopter thing.

Right in the center of the shot on the bottom is the famous Navy Pier. We timed this shot to get at the right height the second the sun dipped below the horizon to cast a rainbow of hues into the sky.

I am excited because I upgraded and got the Nikon D2X. This thing is like carrying around a small tank. It’s so large that it actually sucks other nearby cameras into it, automatically amalgamating all their megapixel power.

I took this at the top of the John Hancock this evening as night fell.

It was done with 9 exposures. I figured, why the heck not.

The Majesty (my largest photo ever), a photo by Stuck in Customs on Flickr.

This is one of the largest pieces I have ever made; the giant TIFF is about 21,000 pixels across (this one I uploaded is only 15,000 pixels across and has been downgraded to JPEG to fit inside the draconian upload requirements).

I shot it one cool and crisp morning at Glacier National Park in this crystal clear lake that is fed by glacial runoff. It is comprised of 90 different photos that took a small eternity to mix together into an epic HDR. I’ve been thinking about having a 10-foot mural printed at walk-up resolution… but I am not quite sure where I would put it!

This is a replica of the exact same place I have been near Nikko, Japan. The Nikko one is quite hard to shoot! There are many things in the way, and setting up for the ideal shot is no easy matter. Plus, when I was in Japan, the sky was not so great that evening. It’s the luck of the cards sometimes!

But this evening in Disney World was ultra-perfect. Epcot is the park that has all the little international areas. Japan, Germany, France, etc etc. It’s all a little silly and fake — but it’s also very cool and scenic! I don’t know how it can be both… but it is. Those Disney imagineers do an incredible job of making things look dreamy. I do the best I can to capture the magic as I saw it.

Kane’s Tips!

- When shooting a beach sceene, you need to get low if you want to get the best reflections.

- Breaking the ‘rule of thirds’ (as in having the horizon in the center) is fine for reflections, in fact it almost always looks better, if you had a person or other subject in the foreground you can put them on the top or bottom third, build the shot.

- Look for shapes, it adds interest and grabs the attention of the viewer.

About Wellington Point

Wellington Point is a suburb of Redland City, about 22 km east of Brisbane, Queensland. The suburb derives its name from Wellington Point which extends prominently into Moreton Bay.

The point and its adjoining waters are used extensively for aquatic sports. The area is also a popular day-trip destination but is predominantly urban, yet Wellington Point retains and has enhanced its seaside and village atmosphere among its high quality housing and services.

Wellington Point is largely residential and adjoins Birkdale, Queensland in the west and Ormiston, Queensland to the south east.

About Gisborne

Gisborne (Māori: Tūranga-nui-a-Kiwa) is the name of a unitary authority in New Zealand, being both a region and a district. Gisborne is also the name of the largest settlement within the Gisborne Region.

Gisborne is named for an early Colonial Secretary William Gisborne. The council is located in the town of Gisborne (locally referred to as the City of Gisborne).

The region is located in the northeastern corner of the North Island and is also referred to as the East Cape or East Coast or Eastland region. It is a sparsely inhabited and isolated region, with small settlements mainly clinging to small bays along the eastern shore including Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay. The population of the region is 46,000 (June 2008 estimate), with almost three quarters of those living in the city of Gisborne.

Now, getting to this place was not easy!

I arrived about 1 AM at a tiny family-run inn by the river. I was meeting a local guide (see Jack’s website) at 5 AM, so I didn’t get a lot of what I would call “quality sleep”.

Anyway, I got up very early and went downstairs in pitch black. There seemed to be a big white cloth box I had to go around to find the front door. My guide was outside. The door was locked and we could not figure out how to get it open. Everyone at the little inn was sound asleep and I was totally confused. Then, from inside the big white box, a body flew out of it! There was a 60-year-old Chinese guy inside that was sleeping until I woke him up with all my lock-manipulations. His naked limbs in the white sheets scared the bejeezus out of me and woke me right up!

And then we were on the river about 5:15. It was still completely dark outside. And I mean COMPLETELY DARK. It was a thin bamboo raft with an outboard motor.

I turned around to ask my guide, “How the heck does the boat driver know where he is going?!?”

He calmly said, “Oh, no worry. The river is very wide.”

I not-calmly said, “Well, that’s great and everything, but I can’t even see the edge to the river!”

He calmly said, “But it is so wide.”

This line of questioning was not getting me anywhere, so I just decided to sit back and enjoy my possible last moments on Earth. Then the sun started to rise, and we moved the boat over to the best bank for the angle.

Want to hear something amazing about these fishermen? You won’t believe it… but maybe others can confirm this! The fishermen use these two trained cormorant birds that have their throats tied. The birds dive into the water, eat a fish, but then can’t swallow it because of the rope. The fisherman rudely pulls the fish from the bird’s throat and drops it into that basket behind him. The bird then goes over to a tiny keyboard and sends out the tweet, “WTF”.

We had a marvellous electric show this morning around Cape Town. This was taken from inside my car with the camera balanced on the camera bag, with the wind blowing and the occassional squall of rain coming through. It wasn’t the best conditions to shoot, hence the movement in the image.

I arrived into Thailand this weekend and have been in content-creation mode non stop. I did take a chance back at the hotel to process this one picture I thought y’all would enjoy.

(and yes that sun picture is real… it was burning through the bottom while still streaming light over the top).

This picture is of Wat Arun, a famous Buddhist temple in Thailand. I took it from a really cool little Italian restaurant across the way that is attached to a boutique hotel named “Arun Residence”.

I will stay at this place next time – be sure to get the balcony room at the top if you come… it’s just over $100 a night.

International Orange #2 – Golden Gate Bridge, a photo by PatrickSmithPhotography on Flickr.

I had to contend with baby raccoons walking around my legs to get this shot! They kept trying to climb up onto me and the tripod. Oh the price we must pay…

The color of the Golden Gate Bridge is orange vermilion, deemed International Orange. The color was selected by consulting architect Irving Morrow because it blends well with the natural surroundings yet enhances the bridge’s visibility in fog. I think they made the right choice! The Reds and Oranges were so intense that I had to slightly desaturate them to retain detail! See the big version. There is a heron that stood still for the entire 30 seconds!

I’ve been waiting for a while to get a better version of this composition that I made with my original 5d. I wanted more fog flowing through the bridge and more resolution. Usually it is very hard for me to duplicate a previous photo, but the fog here can be quite reliable. I lucked out having the half moon here with the sun setting to the right. I was not planning on it, but I left it overexposed to show how it lit up the scene just a bit.

Well, it often seems like the fog is reliable but actually it was looking good until about 1 hour before sunset and then it drifted away from the bridge and things were looking bad. But then about 5 minutes before I made this photo, it moved in to save the day! I was lucky once more!

I was here for a few hours before sunset so I waited up on the top of the hill with the tourists and other photographers, where it was much warmer. It was about 86 (30c) on the hill above the 500 ft. thick fog and about 59 (15c) at this spot! I walked around on the hill without my camera listening to everyone talk in amazement in many languages about the fog and the foghorns. It is quite an impressive sight even though I’ve lived here my entire life. I did take quite a few photos of couples on request. No way to get out of that. And no need to understand what language they were speaking! A few hand gestures and you’re in business.

It is also interesting to watch the other photographers, but I’ll leave that for another day.

Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands – Marin County, California

So The fog rolled through the Golden Gate Bridge for a third day straight, and again, I just couldn’t pass it up. I made my way out, snapped a few test shots, and like making pancakes, I tossed the first couple of images.

I wanted to get to a spot as close to the bridge as possible, and Battery Spencer is the place to be if you’re looking for a close-up of the bridge. I tried a few wide angle compositions, but felt like the image was to “busy”. After some moving around, I decided to revisit a composition that I tried last year.

A little odd, but I really liked the B&W version.

So here is one from my third day out. I am sure this one will be my last for a while. The weather shows a few storms coming in soon, so that should break up the high pressure thats been sitting off shore causing this fog.
