Hi everyone!

RestoDruid.info is now updated for Patch 4.3 – Hour of Twilight.

For a super quick guide to what has changed, refer to the Patch 4.3 Quick Reference.

Changelog:

Pages updated –
* pre-raid gear updated – left the old pre-4.3 items on there also
* relics/idols updated
* tier sets page updated to include t13 and pretty pictures
* BIS page retired
* gems page updated and links properly color coded

As always, thanks to MMO-Champion and Wowhead for making it easier to put gear lists (etc) together.

Thank you to those of you who have written to suggest improvements and point out errors. I apologise for not responding quickly at times – I have just moved across the country and I’m preparing for a new arrival, so I don’t have a lot of time to spend on the computer. I do hope to keep updating the site for major patches, though, even if I can’t spend a lot of time writing about news and thoughts on the game. I’m still hanging around the blogosphere, though I don’t have time to comment on a lot of blogs.

I’m still playing, on and off – at the moment dabbling with a mid-70s Worgen druid (#12 or 13 or something). You can catch me on Twitter now and then, too.

Hopefully the update is all good – but I’m pretty blog-rusty these days (and it was a lot of cutting and pasting of new gear), so please let me know if you notice anything odd.

It’s been too quiet around here, I know. I miss blogging, but my recent circumstances have been a huge drain on my time and unfortunately, it won’t be getting better anytime soon (in fact, I am writing this at lunch because that’s often the only time I get to write).

My dad died at the end of May, about a week before my birthday. He had lung cancer and was doing really well, but the cancer had quietly spread to his brain and he went downhill very suddenly. He was 65.

Two days before Dad was taken into palliative care, I discovered that I was pregnant.

My partner lives in Melbourne and I decided that it would be best for me to move there, as my job can be done remotely and therefore I can take it with me when I move, preserving both of our incomes. This will mean financial security for my new family, but at it also meant upsetting/angering pretty much all of my family in the process, because they are losing me after losing Dad, plus losing the chance to be around the baby when it is born.

I’m excited about being pregnant and about going on a big adventure, but at the same time I feel guilty and that I can’t be openly happy because people around me are grieving (for my Dad, and for me moving away). It is simultaneously the best and most exciting time in my life, and the most upsetting and stressful.

So basically the last few months have been filled with extremely dramatic ups and downs.

Moving two states away is pretty huge. I’ll be going at the start of October, and while that is still two and a half months to prepare, the fact that I work full time and I’m pregnant (and therefore tired a lot) means that I really only have weekends to be able to pack and get organised. 10 or so full weekends seem like plenty to pack – except that I still have animals to take care of, plus help my mum with errands etc. Being pregnant makes me very tired in the middle of the day, so I often have to nap (I get so exhausted that I feel like I might fall on the floor and sleep wherever I end up), and this eats up a lot of my free time, also.

What I’m trying to say is.. I’m in for a very full few months with very little spare time.

I really don’t want to close my blog. It seems far too final. Even if I don’t have time to update weekly, I don’t want to close it. I don’t want it to be “retired” or “inactive” on people’s blogrolls. That makes me sad. I still want the option to randomly blog when I feel like it, but realistically, I won’t be able to keep to much of a schedule. I still want to keep my guide up to date, definitely (it needs some tweaks at the moment, the BIS list needs Sinestra loot added back in, and there are some mistakes I need to fix), but I am struggling to find the time to sit and just write. I miss it, though. I still love to write.

Another thing to consider, on the topic of writing, is that I will most likely create a personal blog for my friends and family to keep up with what’s happening, so that will eat into my free time here and there.

For now though, I’m still playing; I’m enjoying Firelands SO MUCH and love being able to improve my character again. I love getting upgrades and knowing that I am getting stronger. In my small amount of spare time I’ve been working on achievements and finishing up old quests. But a bit of gaming, plus trying to pack up my life, plus trying to get plenty of rest and look after myself, leaves so little time to write. I want to look after myself (and later, I want to restrict the amount of time that I sit at a desk).

And, as much as I love writing about WoW, I don’t really want to let the writing time edge out the playing time.

So this is not a goodbye; rather, it is a courtesy post to let you know that I’m still around, I just might be very quiet, blog-wise, while my life is a bit of a whirlwind and I have so little spare time. I’ll still write, sometimes, but it will be whenever I can find a pocket of free time.

4.2 is here – what do I do now?

I’ve created a Resto Druid Patch 4.2 quick reference guide over at RestoDruid.info but you still may be a bit overwhelmed about where to go and what to do first, to start upgrading your gear and ensure that you don’t miss out on points, badges, rep.. so much to do!

What do you do first? How do you make sure you’re getting the important stuff done?

1. Head to Hyjal

Grab the quests from your city quest board, so you have those in your log.

Now head to the portal area in Stormwind or Orgrimmar and get started on Elemental Bonds chain (The Call of the World-Shaman (Alliance) or The Call of the World-Shaman (Horde)). The last step in this chain gives you Mantle of Desire, a nice healing cloak.

2. Get started on your daily grind

Get started on your daily quests to get level 365 gear NPCs opened ASAP.

If you haven’t already, you need to do all of the Hyjal quests up to Aessina’s Miracle. This kick-starts the phasing that you need to start your Firelands dailies. If you’re in a hurry and looking to only do the essentials, go here.

The rewards for completing these dailies are Marks of the World Tree, but are not used to buy the rewards themselves. Instead, they are used to open up more quests, NPC fortifications, landscape changes, and eventually the reward NPCs who will sell you epics for gold. For more info on how this works, visit the official WoW blog or Wowhead’s 4.2 guide.

Get these dailies done and dusted for today, so you are moving towards opening the reward NPCs as soon as you can.

3. Do some heroics to start replenishing your Valor Points

Your Valor points have been reset to zero! They were transferred over to Justice Points, and any extra that you had (more than 4000 JP) will turn into cash in your mailbox.

You’ll want to get started replenishing your stash of VPs for the new Valor gear. The cap is 980 Valor per week, and the fastest way to reach this cap (if you aren’t raiding) is to do ZA and ZG heroics for 980 per week. ZA and ZG give you 140 per run; other heroics only give you 70 – so if you want to maximise your points per run, stick to ZA and ZG.

Of course, you can mix and match some troll heroics and some Cataclysm heroics for your 980 total, if you prefer, but it will require more runs. Totally up to you. Just know that your weekly cap for doing heroics is 980, and if you want to get your Valor gear ASAP, you should max it out.

If you’ve been away a while, remember that your heroics are no longer daily heroics but a weekly accumulation, so if you’re too busy to do your heroic dungeon today, don’t fret – you can catch up on the weekend. I would get started on your daily quests before you worry about doing heroics – because dailies can only be done each day, while dungeons can be done in chunks throughout the week, whenever it is convenient for you. There’s nothing worse than missing a day of dailies and then later being just shy of a reward, and thinking, “If only I’d done Thursday’s dailies last week”!

4. Kill Occu’thar in Baradin Hold to try for tier legs/gloves.

Occu’thar will be available at the start of Season 10 (July 5/6). Jump into a Baradin Hold raid if you can – though this will depend on whether you have a guild, and if not, whether you can get into an organised BH run. If you can, and you get lucky with drops, you can save yourself 3850 Valor Points (or roughly a month of heroics!)

If the boomkin gloves drop, consider grabbing them (unless you have a boomkin in the raid) as they have a chunk of haste and this will help you reach your all-important haste breakpoints. The resto ones are good, too – but the boomy ones have yummy haste and a yellow socket to boot.

5. Get new boots and gloves crafted**

If Occu’thar doesn’t drop your gloves, and you’re trying to save your Valor points for other pieces, you can get new gloves crafted, along with new boots.

The crafted gloves are virtually identical to the boomkin tier gloves, with a difference of 5spi vs 3 haste, and a red socket vs a yellow socket. So they are an excellent pair of gloves to have made, if you can’t get the tier gloves and you’re using your Valors for something else.

The crafted boots are better than the normal mode raid drop boots, if you need the haste (in which case you get an extra 187, which is substantial). I would imagine that many people will want to have these crafted (until they can access heroic gear) in order to have that haste wiggle room.

**HOWEVER: The mats include Living Embers which drop from raids (think Primordial Saronite), so I wouldn’t expect you to see them (the embers or the BOE crafted items) available on the AH for quite a while – and if they are, expect to pay an arm and a leg (and who wants to sell off their arms and legs to buy gloves and boots – that’d be pretty dumb, wouldn’t it!).

If you are going to get these crafted, I would prioritise the boots over the gloves, as you have an option for gloves through Baradin Hold and Valor Points, and this option is comparable to the crafted version. The boots, on the other hand, are a huge upgrade if you are chasing haste, and there are no other comparable options for boots. Of course, this is all entirely up to you and how you plan to use your Valors and your gold. The option is there, if you want it.

Note that you can’t earn Avengers of Hyjal rep (for their reputation rewards) without raiding (though you can get to Friendly by killing trash), so that loot will have to wait until you’re raiding and repping up.

Other than that, it’s rinse and repeat. Do your Hyjal dailies to unlock the NPCs as soon as possible, and do your heroics each week to cap your Valor Points and buy the new items.

Pretty soon you’ll be ready to go stab Ragnaros in his shiny new ankles!

Hello my dear druids. I’ve missed you!

The fact that I wrote the “I might quit” article and then went AWOL probably made people think that I’d just walked off. I haven’t quit. I won’t go into a long-winded explanation of what’s been going on. I can sum it up as:

family

health

personal

guild struggles and people letting me down

= BOOM

and for the first time ever, I abandoned WoW and my blog entirely, because I simply couldn’t fit it in, and had no energy or desire to, anyway. Everything was making me too weary.

At one stage I thought I might quit the game, but I still really enjoy it. I thought I would quit my blog because of lack of time and energy; I thought I’d just play the game and relax, but every time I go through my reader I see articles I wish I had written, and conversations I wish I had been involved in, and I know that I’m not ready to stop writing. I miss it so much, and I miss helping people! I may need to cut back on posting a bit compared to in the past, but at the very least I want to keep maintaining my site/s as a general reference for resto druids. I still have a bunch of drafts that I want to finish and share, so I’ll see how I go at making time. I’m not sure entirely, so it will be a wait-and-see kind of deal.

I do apologise to those of you who may have written to me in the last couple of months while I’ve been out of action. I have tried to go back and find any old emails and answer them, but if I missed yours, I’m sorry.

Despite feeling not terribly enthused about 4.2 itself, I still have a lot of enthusiasm for updating my guide and helping people to prepare, and to raid. I barely touched heroics in T11, which is very unlike me, but guild and realm stability issues got in the way, and that’s that. No sense crying over it, or feeling like I can’t help people because I’m not decked in heroic gear and I don’t have all the achievements. I may not see much of heroics in T12 either, but at the very least I can help new and rerolling players with the basics, which is what I enjoy doing.

So I’ve put together a 4.2 guide in the spirit of my “Quick Start” cheat sheet – everything you need to know in a neat, concise, straight to the point guide. Though I do like explaining things in detail, there are often times (like now, actually) where I just want to know where I need to go, who I need to talk to, what I need to buy, and what has to change with my spec or play style. I can go back and study the details later – just tell me what I have to know, and be quick about it!

So here it is:

Resto Druid Patch 4.2 Guide

I’ve also updated RestoDruid.info to be current for 4.2 – there are still a couple of sections that need to be done (eg the fresh 85 page), but the existing information has been updated. Note: there may still be some rogue references to Symbiosis. Also, I’m publishing this before the 4.2 release, so I’m using PTR Wowhead tooltips; if this causes issues I will update the tooltips as soon as I can.

Hi everyone,

I’ve just finished updating my resto druid guide over at RestoDruid.info. Changes:

Cheat Sheet page has been updated with links to new recommended specs for 4.1.

Resto History now includes 4.1 patch notes

Races page updated to make it clear that Worgen and Troll are the best choices for PvE resto

Levelling spec options tweaked a little

BOA items page updated to include Archaeology items

Haste breakpoint info has been greatly simplified and made a lot more clear

Added the T11 image to the tier sets page

Updated the Talents Explained page now that some talents are a bit more desirable

Changed the professions page to be a lot neater and more concise

Updated the PvP page to link to Oombulance’s revamped PvP guide

Pre-raid gear page updated to include ZA/ZG gear

BIS gear page reinstated, includes ZA/ZG gear and new Al’Akir random enchantment items

The pre-raid and BIS gear lists, frankly, are a pain in the neck to do. There’s no such thing as "BIS" anymore, because it will depend on what your haste is at, what you can reforge, etc. So I’ve just given a handful of options, in order of ilvl, for people to choose from. If you notice that I’ve missed something that should be on the list, please let me know.

Finally, I’ve added a placeholder page for brand new 85s; as suggested by Beyotamah. This will be a project for another day (soon, though) and will basically help brand new 85s with what to do next – what to buy from the AH, what reps to grind, what instances you should focus on, etc.

Innervate has gone through a lot of changes in its career. The newest, in 4.2, is:

Innervate now grants an ally target 5% of his or her maximum mana over 10 seconds, but still grants 20% of the druid’s maximum mana over 10 seconds when self-cast.

Glyph of Innervate now causes the druid to gain 10% of his or her maximum mana over 10 seconds when Innervate is used on a friendly target, in addition to Innervate’s base effect.

Edit: PTR build 14002 has this tooltip, according to MMO Champion:

Causes the target to regenerate 5% of maximum mana over 10 sec. If cast on self, the caster will regenerate an additional 15% of maximum mana over 10 sec.

Translation:

If you cast on yourself, you get 20% of YOUR mana.

If you cast on someone else, they get 5% of THEIR mana. You also get 10% of YOUR mana if using the glyph (presently, if you cast on someone else, they get 20% of YOUR mana, and you get 10% of YOUR mana if you have the glyph.).

Nothing has been said yet about why this was done.

Personally, I’m annoyed because it means no more Innervate swapping (because it will be less efficient than simply Innervating yourself) – which in turn means no strategic play between the druids, no cool Power Auras to alert me to my partner’s status, etc. It might be a trivial thing, but it was something that I really enjoyed. Another small utility aspect to the game. Now I won’t be giving my Innervate away to anyone unless I have more than enough mana and someone else is really desperate. It will likely just be something I use on myself on cooldown, with no real strategic element.

It’s worth noting that the nerf here is not just the fact that it’s only 5% of the target’s mana returned instead of 20% of your mana, but also the fact that we will lose the use of Int procs and bonuses to buff our mana pools before hitting Innervate. If you’re Innervating yourself, these procs and buffs will still work to buff your own mana return, but since the return on an ally is based on *their* mana pool, not yours, then temporarily boosting your mana pool does nothing to increase the mana that you give to them. So for those of you who have been boosting your mana before Innervating an ally, this will be an even bigger nerf.

Perhaps this change means I’ll be more “free” to give my Innervate to people other than resto druids (but why would you want to, for such a piddling return), or that I won’t feel guilty for Innervating myself instead of someone else – but it makes the ability pretty dull. Of course, it means that it will be a lot easier to take Glyph of Healing Touch (Timmy, if you’re reading, I hear “Healing Touch” in your voice) over Glyph of Innervate, particularly if you usually swap with another druid (which won’t be worth doing anymore).

It’s certainly not game-breaking, the sky is not falling and WoW isn’t ruined, but it will mean a couple of little enjoyable strategies will be pointless, and that’s disappointing.

On a positive note, something I’ve asked for, for a long time:

Characters can now be reorganized at the Character Selection screen. This feature not yet fully functional and the reorganization of characters doesn’t save at this time.

Hooray!

Comments are off because this was not written to fish for encouragement or praise or “don’t go”s.

——————————

I’m teetering.

Teetering on the edge of going casual. Or quitting. Or taking a break that works for a while but then I come back later but it’s not the same so I quit again. I really don’t know.

I already explained that it’s not the game pushing me away, it’s the people. Not all of the people, of course. A lot of the people are great. Unfortunately, a lot of those great people aren’t in a cluster on my server. This isn’t about my server being crappy or my guild being bad; I love my guild. Unfortunately though, a large chunk of people don’t seem to care a whit about loyalty or weathering the bad times – it’s just too damn easy to walk back through the revolving doors.

Greener pastures can be yours for the low, low price of $25.

I’m not the kind of person who moans about Blizzard ruining the game or catering to casuals. But I don’t think that anyone can deny that the level of skill required now is a lot lower than it used to be. The knock-on from that, I believe, is that a lot of people have so little staying power when it comes to things being challenging. I touched on this in my previous article. I’m not trying to trumpet the virtues of the “good old days” of Vanilla and TBC, but yes, I genuinely enjoyed working on bosses for weeks or months without people deciding it was too hard and time to quit.

Again, I’m not whining that “casuals have ruined the game”. The game is still great. I love the game. But some of the people in it really suck the enjoyment out.

It’s not even the “baddies”. It’s not awful pugs, or people who don’t CC. The people who are ruining this game for me are the ones who SAY they want to raid, who SAY they’re serious, but turn up late, post ridiculously weak absentee notices, waste time, don’t care, and generally act like they are doing the team a favour by being there.

I need to enjoy the game more

When I went back to being GM, people warned me that I would just burn out again. But honestly, I didn’t feel any pressure when I went into this guild merger. Great bunch of people, smooth transition, fantastic raiding (really fantastic raiding). The stress I feel at the moment isn’t because I’m GM. It’s stress that a bunch of my guildmates feel with me – the stress of being committed to a team activity but knowing a chunk of your team wants to be carried by you. GM or not GM, I doubt my stress would differ much. And I’m not really “stressed” about it. Just sad that I can’t enjoy the game because I can’t rely on people to be committed.

Perhaps I should take a break from structure entirely. No raiding? Just do what I want. I’ve been doing Loremaster stuff lately, exploring old world changes, doing achievements. It’s not bad. And I did ZA for the first time (at 85) yesterday, and loved it. Maybe I should just do 5 mans. Get Drucie into heroics for a bit of a challenge. Enjoy healing again. Feel valued again. It was certainly nice to have a challenge in ZA and get some compliments.

But serious raiding is why I levelled my first druid. When I was told I was undergeared for BWL I was devastated. I used to get up at 4am on Sundays to be able to raid ZG with my US guild (lots of fond memories). I was always first to the stone for BT, and carried extra ammo, ankhs, candles and potions for my team. I really miss Absolution.

I love the solo content in WoW, but I do play to raid.

“Casuals are ruining the game” etc

I do agree that people should be able to access all of the content, rather than having situations like Sunwell where only a small percentage of people got to experience the zone; but in opening everything up and making it available to everyone, I do think it has instilled in a lot of people a certain sense of entitlement.

It seems that a lot of people believe that anyone with any half-assed level of commitment should be able to walk in and clear a zone – and if they can’t, then they’ll just find a guild who can carry that half-assed level of commitment. No need to adjust your attitude or performance – just adjust your guild membership.

Obviously not everyone is like this, but enough people *are* like this that it makes the game sucky for others, having to deal with constant turnover issues.

I thought Cataclysm would fix this; I thought it was just a pre-expac lull. No – go back further – I thought TOC would fix this. Then ICC. Then Ruby Sanctum. THEN Cataclysm. And now, maybe Firelands will make it better.

Blogging

The other part of the problem is that when I’m not raiding, I feel like my blog is fake. I’ve mentioned this before, I’m pretty sure. Probably in Ulduar when Inex stopped raiding.

I haven’t written a single Cataclysm boss guide or how-to. Yes, I have my big druid guide – but I still feel like I’m not a true resource because I’m not offering up current raiding strategies and tips, like a serious druid blog should be. So if I stop raiding, I feel like my blog’s quality is reduced by a lot. You don’t need to raid to be able to help people learn to play a druid, of course, but I do feel like there’s a bit of a hole in my content. I strive to make TBJ the best resto blog out there. Whether or not it hits that mark is irrelevant – I still aim there – and I am painfully aware of when the quality slips.

I don’t really know where to go from here. I don’t want to stop playing, I don’t want to stop raiding, and I especially don’t want to stop blogging. I still enjoy the game, there’s still a tonne to do. But in a game that is supposed to be about interacting with people and playing as a team, I feel constantly dragged down by people who don’t care about anyone around them. This is in stark contrast to the way things felt back in Vanilla or TBC, when teams were tight and people were loyal. The challenge of putting your head down and working til you reach your goal.. it feels as though few people care for that now. It’s too easy (and cheap) to jump ship to find an easier ride.

I am finding it so hard to stay interested, when good, committed, loyal people seem so thin on the ground these days. Being interested in the game is what feeds my blog, so when I’m not enjoying the game, I feel it really permeates my blog and drags down the quality/quantity/tone. If I’m not raiding, especially, I feel that I’m just worsening the signal-to-noise in your feed reader.

I’m not ready to stop writing TBJ.. I still have articles half-written, ideas. I can’t bring myself to say “the end” – I’m too invested. Perhaps though it’s time to shut things down on a relatively high note, instead of letting things die a slow death. I’d rather have a retired blog than a mediocre blog.

I feel defeated.

Just a clarification on my recent post about Innervate and Volcanic Potions:

I think that some people misread/misinterpreted this article. I have since simplified some of the language to make it more clear. It was not written to tell people not to use Volcanic Potions; nor was it to say that you shouldn’t hit your Innervate button while you are under the effects of a volc pot. If you are using Volcanic Potions strategically within fights for added burst healing, then using an Innervate at this time will help you to maximise your Innervate, and that’s good.

HOWEVER – that is not what my post was about. My post was written because I had had observed (and read about) druids mistakenly using those potions purely as a way to give themselves bigger Innervates. Not for burst healing at strategic times during encounters. Not for increased healing output. Purely to buff their Innervate for more mana during the fight. Even with raid buffs and replenishment etc taken into account, this is false economy and a waste of a potion cooldown, because you are actually costing yourself mana, not giving yourself extra. My post was written to bring that to light for people who might not realise that their strategy is flawed.

Thank you to everyone who commented or wrote to me, letting me know that using Volcanic Potions can be a good thing. I’m certainly not denying that. There are particular encounters where you *would* want to sacrifice 15k mana to get burst healing – eg on Chimaeron heroic, when I’m soaker tank healing, I hardly use any mana and can afford to donate my Innervates and not use mana potions – so using a Volcanic Potion on the P2 transition and Innervating a bubbletastic priest would be a better strategy than using a mana potion during the fight. But the majority of beginner and intermediate healers (that make up the bulk of my readers and guide-users) probably can’t afford to pay 15k mana to pop a pot, particularly if they are potting early to make sure they’re not caught short of mana later in the fight. Everyone’s mileage will vary, of course, but this is about mana and longevity, rather than specific encounter tactics.

I write a lot of my articles and guides with beginner and intermediate players in mind, as they make up the majority of my readers. This article was directed at those players, who might think they have a solid strategy for squeezing more badly-needed mana out of each fight, when actually they are hurting themselves in the process. It was not aimed at players who use Volcanic Potions primarily for boosting their healing output with a moderate mana return, and it was not telling those players that they are wrong for using Volcanic Potions over mana potions.

So – once again – the article was not saying “don’t ever use Volcanic Potions, use mana potions.” It was saying “if you’re using Volcanic Potions just to get bigger Innervates, you’re not actually getting what you think you are.”

I felt this was clear when I wrote the article, and that when I said “it’s never ok to use volc pots with Innervate” that people would understand from the context that I meant using the pots specifically to boost your Innervate. But obviously that’s not how it read when published, so I have edited some of the wording to clarify my intention. I’ve turned comments off on both articles (here and on RestoDruid.info) because I felt that I was going to have to keep clarifying, editing, and explaining to people who were reading old versions of the article, and it was going to make me cranky!

Use Volcanic Pots – they’re great! But don’t use them purely to boost your Innervate, because that is bad.
