From Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" debuted in the U.S. at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday to the news that researchers have determined the lightning observed during the eruption of Mt. Having moved to Booklyn NY from Spain for a couple of months, I was eager to get to know the Park Slope Food Coop (PSFC), one of the oldest and largest in America. Not having these kinds of food coops in Europe as far as I know, I wanted to check out what it's all about, what kinds of people choose to join and how the system works. For many years now (read our first article about Leopoldo in 2005), this Catalan design is appearing in more and more homes, restaurants, galleries and other spaces in need of green and locally grown food. It changed in size and colour, and another interesting aspect of the Leopoldo Urban Vegetable Garden is its use in hospitals. Dear Pablo: I have heard that using a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature while you are out saves energy but isn't the same amount of energy used to bring the temperature back up when you come home?

The short answer is no. Because the rate of heat transfer through an insulated (or uninsulated for that matter) floor, ceiling, or wall is dependent on the temperature difference between the inside and outside air, less energy is lost to the outside when the inside air is cooler.... <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/01/turn-down-the-heat.php?campaign=th_rss_exclusives">Read the full story on TreeHugger</a>

Dear Pablo: We are looking into buying a pellet stove to supplement the heat in a house we are renovating. I know that pellet stoves are cleaner burning than wood stoves but I read that making the pellets themselves is extremely CO2-intensive. According to the US Department of Energy 90% of Americans burned wood to heat their homes before the 20th century.
Ronen Kadushin's LYTA Chair: lightweight and 100% recyclable

(more images below)

What makes a chair eco-friendly? Well, it takes quite a lot of things such as recyclability, reduced weight, longevity, both technically and emotionally, and the possibility to repair it before tossing it away. An eco-friendly chair cannot be thrown out because of a broken leg, or a wine stain. It seems that Israeli-born, Berlin-based designer Ronen Kadushin has archived these requirements in his LYTA chair. ... <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/01/ronen-kadushin-lyta-chair.php?campaign=th_rss_exclusives">Read the full story on TreeHugger</a>

TreeHugger Goes to Antarctica, Meets Penguins, Seals, and More (Slideshow)

Last November, TreeHugger experienced first-hand the magnificent scale of Antarctica, with its towering peaks of rock and snow and vast seas that can barely be done justice by photographs; the sense of remoteness and isolation is hard to duplicate looking at images back home. (Although, on the plus side, photographs mean you can view penguins without the accompanying strong smell of decaying fish, so some might call it even.)

This slideshow zeros in on the nature and wildlife of Antarctica -- and some of the people who want to preserve it.

Dear Pablo: I received my annual <S>paper weight</S> phone book today and I couldn't help but wonder about the millions of trees that are wasted each year on the yellow pages.

In deed many of us have no need for the yellow pages (commercial listings) and white pages (residential listings) anymore. We have Blackberries and iPhones, and we have increasing access to the internet via video game consoles and web-enabled appliances, so why would we need this wasteful relic from the ... <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/01/phone-book-waste.php?campaign=th_rss_exclusives">Read the full story on TreeHugger</a>

The TH Interview: Chitra K. Vishwanath, Earth Architect

More often than not, I am greeted with blank looks whenever I mention the words 'earth architecture'. But forget mud huts and even the Great Mosque (Mali's masterpiece of traditional earth building). Despite it being an ancient building material, designing with earth these days is not as humble as it may appear, especially in urban settings.
