(1) Being vegan or cruelty-free doesn’t affect the effectiveness of a product. This means that a product can be or not be those things and it won’t be a reason for a lack of increase in the product’s effectiveness.

Yes, you might not know exactly what they are, so we’ve put together a list of some ingredients that we do not add to our hair products and why we do not add them.

1. Alcohol (the fast chain/drying type): This type of alcohol dries the hair quickly, but it also reduces the moisture in the hair, thus making hair dry and susceptible to damage, so we avoid it entirely. 
2. Silicones/Dimethicone: This is not a natural product; rather, it is synthetic. When applied to the hair, often in shampoos, it makes the hair shine. But it's difficult to wash off and attracts dirt to hair. This adds unnecessary weight to your hair.
3. Phthalates: Some manufacturers use phthalates in their hair sprays to ensure effective discharge of the contents of hair sprays. We shun including this in our hair products because phthalate is not only dangerous for your hair but it’s also hazardous to the human body. It causes cancer, reproductive and congenital disabilities, and hormonal changes. Bad news, this ingredient.
4. Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is synthetic oil gotten from petroleum and it lacks the essential purity of natural oils. Occasional usage of mineral oil might not give noticeable changes, but long-term usage is dangerous. You can trace this to the improper and poor manufacturing process. It may also be difficult to wash mineral oil off completely, so the leftover prevents air and hair products from penetrating the scalp. Sheesh!
5. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde, when inhaled, can cause asthma. It could also lead to hair loss and damage to hair follicles.
6. Parabens: These are used as preservatives to make the products have a longer shelf life. Parabens are mostly found in shampoos and sulfates.

Safflower Oil: very effective for hair growth or regrowth and to cure baldness. The nutrients which are readily absorbed ensure adequate blood supply to the scalp, thereby strengthening hair follicles for the growth of healthy hair. 

Castor Oil: Castor oil is wonderful for those with dry and flaky scalp; it locks in moisture to keep the scalp from drying out. It helps to remove dandruff, relieves scalp inflammation, and also prevents scalp infections.

Peppermint Essential Oil: It has a soothing effect on the scalp. It also improves the growth of hair and circulates the flow of blood on the scalp. 

Aloe Vera Juice: Aloe vera juice is extracted from the insides of the aloe vera plant. This juice prevents the scalp from itching as well as promotes hair growth and reduces dandruff.

First, understand that you can’t slap just any oil on your hair because it’s...oil. Hair oils all have various functions and you should only use the hair oils that your curls need. Here’s a list to help you make your best choice. 

1. Raw organic coconut oil: 
   
   Raw and pure coconut oil is useful for all hair types. It contains vitamins and fatty acids that help to reduce hair breakage. They also help the growth of hair by improving its length and thickness. Raw organic coconut oil protects the hair from sun damage and other damage by dye and dandruff.

6. Tea Tree Essential Oil: Tea tree essential oil is effective for repairing hair follicles. It clears dead cells on the scalp so the scalp can breathe. It’s a must-have in our opinion.

Now we know wash day comes with several challenges, so this guide will help you get ahead of them.

The Basics of Your Wash Day

While every curly-haired girl’s wash day routine may differ, it should include the basics. These are;

• Shampooing to cleanse your hair and remove dirt and buildup
• Conditioning to seal the cuticles, nourish your curls, and prepare them for hair products
• Treating to use specific products for specific hair problems or goals.
• Moisturizing and styling to lock in moisture, treatment, and keep your curls popping till the next wash day.

A wash day routine should come from a good understanding of your hair type and needs. You should also do it every 7 to 10 days.

A Routine Worth Stealing

The first step is pre-poo. Pre-poo means treating your hair with an oil or conditioner before you shampoo. This treatment should aim to remove debris and strengthen your hair.

The second step is shampoo. Fully drench your curls in water to promote lathering. Shampoo with the right product. Work your hair in sections, massage your scalp as you go, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Third step, condition. Use the right conditioner, work your hair in sections again, and massage properly. Allow the conditioner to sit for a while before rinsing off thoroughly.

Fourth step, Treat. This is super unique and depending on what products you use here, the instructions should be on them too.

Fifth step, moisturize and style. Probably the best part of wash day – because it means it’s over and it can get fun, lol. Pick the right moisturizers and styling products to give your hair that final touch.

Some of the causes of damage to hair include bleaching, hair coloring, perming, up-dos, over-brushing, shampooing too frequently, excessive use of blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons, as well as applying the wrong products. Shampoos containing alcohol or sulfates can do a lot of damage to hair. Alcohol causes hair to become dry and brittle. Damaged hair can be identified by its rough texture, dulled shine, split ends, lack of moisture, extreme breakage, high porosity, lack of elasticity, and too many tangles.

If you have observed most of the above mentioned signs, it’s about time you took action to revive your damaged locks and curls. With proper care, damaged hair can be nurtured back to health. You should act immediately if you notice damage as you may be left no choice than to shear your hair off if the damage spreads.

Protective styling is one sure way to help your hair recover from damage and keep it healthy. Protective styling refers to those styling methods that reduce hair manipulation and encourage growth retention, while protecting your strand ends and minimizing knots and tangles in your hair. Protective styles require minimal daily upkeep and manipulation. There are several such beautiful braids and updo's that you can wear at least 3 or 4 days a week while your hair is recovering from damage. For best results, it is advisable that you only leave your hair “out” for, at most, a week each month until your hair is healthy again.

Here are eight other tested and trusted tips to help you care for and rejuvenate your hair.

1. Trimming Damaged Hair Ends

If you notice that your hair ends have a straw-like texture, it is necessary that you get them trimmed. This is the first step to restoring your hair, and every so often, it is sufficient to take care of the damage and revitalize your hair. You don’t need an extreme chop, you just need a layered trim.

2. Avoiding Hot Styling Tools

Immediately if you notice damage, it’s time to put all your hot styling tools away. Heat is not at all good for your already damaged hair and scalp. Totally eliminating the heat will really help your hair recovery. Allow your hair to dry naturally and do styles and curls that don’t require heat.

3. Abstaining From Chemicals and Artificial Colors

Certain chemicals aren’t good for your hair. Dyeing, bleaching or perming your hair when it’s damaged is a very bad idea, because this will spread the damage beyond saving. Stay away from chemical treatments, at least until your hair has recovered. Most salon healing treatments involve chemicals, so you want to stay away from these and revitalize your hair with natural ingredients. Go for natural hair dyes such as henna, cassia and tea. These will nourish your hair while coloring it, if you have to conceal some greys or add some color.

4. Using Sulphate-Free Hair Products

In regards to your shampoos and conditioners, go for natural hair products, such as Tree Naturals products, that don’t contain any harsh chemicals such as sulphate and sodium lauryl. Exchange all your hair products for those made from natural ingredients like oils, and homemade deep conditioning masks.

5. Using Oils

How much conditioner do you use?  As a curly haired girl, I realized that conditioner was the #1 product I used and boy did I use a ton of it; at least 2-3 bottles of conditioner per month to detangle my waist length hair.  I would often think, "Wow, what a waste, there's got to be a better way." 

And there was. Seven years ago I decided to do something about it and created the Tree Naturals Solid Conditioner Bar.  At the time, this sort of thing wasn't really heard of and it took some time to catch on.  My goal was to create a product that was formulated with good-for-you ingredients that actually worked for all hair types, would help save you time, money and to reduce our ecological footprint, but I realized we still dropped the ball by shrink wrapping and shipping them in plastic. 

Your feedback is crucial to us and we’re happy to let you know that it's been 1 year since we eliminated the plastic shrink wrap from our Conditioner Bars.  But it doesn't stop there, we are proud to announce that for the past 2 months we only ship our Conditioner Bars in padded paper mailers.  Our conditioner bars are now 100% plastic free!

Did you know it takes plastic about 400 years to degrade?
