Winter Commute

I remember one morning last winter when I was preparing to go to work. It was 20 degrees below zero with a foot of snow on the ground. The windows on my car were coated with two inches of ice and I really didn’t want to go wade through snowdrifts up to “you-know-where” to spend an hour clearing them off. I heard on the news that the wind was blowing hard enough to blow large trucks off the road so I knew that the odds of a wreck free commute that morning weren’t good. I got up from the table, gave my wife and kids a hug, took one last look at the swirling mass of whiteness in the window. . . . And then I poured myself another cup of coffee and walked down the short hallway to my home office. As I turned on my computer and prepared for work, I said a quick prayer of thanks for the day I discovered ARISE Stay warm this winter – Stay home!

P.S. I've worked at home through ARISE for two years now so it's definitely the real thing!

One of the most obvious but usually ignored skills in family leadership is the art of listening. When I shut down the computer and turn off the t.v. and take the time to listen to my family I'm actually working with God to do several things...

I'm enlarging my understanding of what He's doing in the personal lives of my wife and kids,
I'm helping to help build their strengths and minimize any weak spots,
I'm enlarging my influence in their lives and minimizing misunderstandings.

As a husband and a father, I can't afford not to listen to my family -- the price is far too high. But I like to pour myself into my work which doesn’t always lend itself to listening. A large part of marriage, parenting, leadership etc, is about understanding, discerning, reading people, assessing my family's culture, hearing God and then taking action. All these things require listening. I mean really actively listening to my family. And when I develop the ability to really hear what my wife and children are saying, it's a given that they'll feel more valued, respected, appreciated, and loved.

Like Fraiser used to say...."I'm Listening!"

Mulan & God's Approval

Just watched one of the final scenes from Mulan where she came up to her father and offered him the evil Hun's sword and the seal of the Emperor. Both represented a lot of hard work, victory, and verified the approval of her government.

Her father took them from her and threw them on the ground and hugged her while he said....."I don't care about those things..I'm just glad you're my daughter.

I sniffed a bit cause I've been promised the exact same reaction from God when someday I bring the results of my labor into his presence and it's the response that I should be giving my children on a regular basis.

During my "God-time" the other morning I came across Psalm 19:14 -- "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer."

So I say to God -- "God, I really really really want to know in my heart that I'm acceptable to you.....God, how do you feel about me right now?"

5 minutes later I get an e-mail from Stu Gray with this video in it......
