Sync/Add Folders Outside Dropbox Folder to Dropbox in Windows using SymLink

Dropbox is a cloud service which helps you to keep your files on the cloud and make your files available anywhere from the World.

Recently I was configuring Dropbox on my new system, I wanted to sync some folders which are not placed inside the default dropbox folder which is C:\Users\\Dropbox. We can change this path to any other path in the system from the Dropbox settings -> Advanced. But that still gives me the ability to sync files and folders located inside that particular folder.

My requirement was to sync a folder which is located inside the Dropbox location. After some research I found a solution for syncing/adding any folder in the system to the dropbox without storing the folder inside the Dropbox folder.

The solution to this is to create a symbolic link in the Dropbox folder which points to the actual folder. The usual create shortcut from the right click context menu will not work. But you can make this work using a simple command in command promt.

To get this done open your command prompt with Run as administrator from the right client menu. Then get the path of your Dropbox folder and the path of the folder you want to sync

For ex:

Dropbox Folder : C:\Users\\Dropbox\
Target Folder : D:\test\

The command to create a symbolic link run the following command

mklink /D "C:\Users\\Dropbox\" "D:\test\"

This command will create a symlink to D:\test folder in the Dropbox folder and Dropbox will start syncing the D:\test. Hope this helps with syncing your files and folders with Dropbox. This fix doesn't work with Google Drive yet because Google Drive is not yet implemented to work with Symlinks.

Schedule Automatic Shutdown Without Any Programs

All you of might have thought about scheduling a shutdown after a while. There are several small application programs are available in net for the purpose. But I would suggest that you should not go for any external software for these kinds of simple tasks.

You can schedule a shutdown for your computer by following a few instructions. You can also create icons for a scheduled shutdown on your desktop if you frequently needs a scheduled shutdown. Read my article for creating a desktop shutdown icon.

Follow these instructions for scheduling a shutdown.

Click Start menu(Win Menu)
Click Run. If you are using Windows XP you'll see the Run icon in your start menu itself. If you are using Windows 7 type run on your start menu search and then you'll see the Run Icon.(Instead of Step 1 & 2 you can press Win Key + R to get the Run Command Wizard)
In the Run Command Wizard type "shutdown -s -t time_in_seconds" without the quotes .Ex : shutdown -s -t 600, this will shutdown your computer after 10 Minutes.
Click OK

after the -t you have to give the time in seconds. Suppose your want to turn off your computer after 1 Hour then use the Calculator to find the seconds, 1*60*60 will give you the result 3600. And then your command is shutdown -s -t 3600.

You can use this command to create a scheduled shutdown icon too.For that just replace the command given the article Instruction to Create Shutdown/Reboot/Log off Desktop Icon with this command and follow the instruction given there.

Geeky folks (one geeky folk, to be precise) from a rather ominously named blog called nexus one hacks has posted a rather longish video that can potentially help you port Ubuntu on to your highly capable handset without bricking it. Note that in this case, Ubuntu is being offered as a secondary boot option so that you may switch over to Android at the next boot should anything go wrong. Of course, as it is an OS meant for quite a different platform, you d come across a few things that simply won t work. But then that s excusable when you experience the pleasure of running an OS on a device that is not supposed to run it.

By the way, it hasn t been very long since the HD2 also got the Ubuntu treatment. What s with phones being ported to desktop OSes these days?

Which one is good ? Dell or Sony Vaio

This is the one question that all people ask when they decide to buy a laptop. Though there is a handful of companies in notebook market including Sony,Dell,HP,Apple,Lenovo,Acer etc etc. Sony Vaio and Dell being the 2 most popular models , first comes to mind of any one. In person I have answered this question to my friends many times. So far I was involved in the purchase of 5 Sony Vaio’s and 4 or 5 Dell laptops. From the performance of these 10 notebooks I can come to some assumptions, not conclusions. Don’t blame me being so blunt! Out of the 5 Dell laptops 4 of them had shown serious complaints within the first year. One had problems with mother board, while one had problems with display other with hard disk and so on. All of them got saved as it was in guarantee! So that’s the first impression I am having with Dell. None of them had shown any complaints since then, so I think Dell is not that bad!

Now we should talk about vaio. I am using a Sony Vgn Cr36 notebook. During the first year it had shown a small complaint with sound. Apart from that first year was fine. During second year I was forced to admit it again because of cooling problems. These were the two issues I faced with Vaio. I said before we purchased 5 nos of Vaio. I think 2 of them showed problems. One is mine and other a friends which had problems with display. They replaced its display and I think its fine now. All others are fine so far. The good thing with Vaio is you can get an extended warranty f 2 years for some extra bucks. I recommend all of you should make use of it.

So from my experience both Dell and Sony fits in same shoes! None of them is free from complaints. Both of them offer good after sales service too. The only difference is you need to take Vaio to a near by service centre, where as a service executive will land on your home for Dell. Both of them are not so fast on solving issues like changing display or other core parts! They will make you wait for more than a week.

Now before buying your laptop, research well on web. First be certain and specific on what all your needs are. Then select one that fits you.

Google Chrome Browser Themes Gallery

Google Chrome's themes gallery is now available and you can select one of the 28 themes if you install Google Chrome 3.0 Developer Preview or if you have a recent Chromium build.

Installing a theme isn't a smooth process: you download a .crx file, then Google Chrome loads theme and offers the option to go back to the default theme. You can't preview themes before installing theme and there's no interface for managing themes. The only way to uninstall themes, extensions and to reload themes is by typing chrome://extensions/ in the address bar.

For now, the gallery only includes themes created by Google, but you'll be able to create your own theme and upload it to the gallery in the near future. Check how you can create a theme for Google Chrome.

Bonus themes. There are two sample themes that aren't included in the gallery: Camo and Snowflakes, one of the best Chrome themes.

Turbo Feature in Opera 10

Google Knol : A Quick Giude

Google today introduced Knol, a Wikipedia style encyclopedia that anyone can edit but with some major differences:

a) Wikipedia has one page per topic but that limit is relaxed on Google Knol - multiple authors can write on the same topic at different places.

b) Wikipedia is currently free of advertising but contributors at Know do get an opportunity to monetize content that they share on Knol through Google AdSense.

c) All content on Wikipedia is available under "GNU Free Documentation License" but Google Knol users can pick any of the Creative Commons licenses for their articles.

d) On Wikipedia, you cannot create pages for self-promotion while that’s not the case with Knol as their content policy clearly says - "You may use Knol to create articles for your business or to promote your lawful products or services."

e) Anyone can edit (most) pages on Wikipedia but with Knol you have an option to invite only selected reviewers / experts to change pages that you have created. This prevents vandalism though the scope is limited only to experts whom you know.

f) Anyone can rate articles on Knol or even leave comments just like a blog. That’s missing in Wikipedia.

Get Started with Knol - The First Step

Import Your Blog Articles, Wikipedia Pages or even Word Docs into Knol

Knol offers a pretty decent import feature through which you can bring your existing articles into Knol.

You can import HTML, PDF, DOC, XLS and other popular file formats into Knol - the extracted text opens up in WYSIWYG editor where you can edit the formatting issues and publish.

To import articles into Know, create a Knol and use the "Import Tool" in the right toolbox. Sorry but bulk uploads aren’t allowed yet.

Alternative Titles - Perfect for Catching Misspelled Queries

When you write a new article (also known as "creating a knol") - there’s a very useful option where you can suggest alternative titles for the document.

This is very useful if people use different words to describe a same topic. For instance, if I am writing something about "screencasting", the article may also interesting people who are looking for information on screencasts, screen recorders, desktop movies, etc.

I may mentions these words or phrases as "alternative titles" in Knol so that people don’t have trouble finding the topic that they are interested in but don’t know the exact word for that. Of course there’s potential for abuse but that’s a discussion for another day.

Should You Create Knols with your existing Google Account ?

When you create pages on Knol, the URL structure is something like this - /author/topic-name/a-cryptic-sting - see some sample URLs for articles created by one author:

knol.google.com/k/author-name/topic-one/abcde
knol.google.com/k/author-name/topic-two/fghij
knol.google.com/k/author-name/topic-three/xyzabc

While this make it easy to distinguish pages on Knol by author, that may not hold good for long because if another author joins Knol with the same name as you, his articles / contribution will have the same URL structure as you because of similar "real names.’

Secondly, if you working on some article in a group, you may not want to have an article that has only your name in the URL? An alternative is to create a new Google Account and give it a name that identifies with your group (say MIT-students) or with the theme of your article (say computer-science).

Should You Link Knol with Google AdSense ?

Google allows you to monetize your Knol pages with Google AdSense. But before you associate your AdSense Publisher ID with your Knol account, keep "smart pricing" in mind - "an under performing website associated with your AdSense account can result in lower ad rates across all websites sites associated with your Google account.

How secure are you when you browse the internet from your computer? How secure is your financial data? Do you check what page you are going to visit? How safe is the page that you have just opened in your browser?

These are some questions that no one can answer for certain. With the increasing popularity of Internet in India, more and more population is being exposed to the world of internet. It is a known fact that most beginners will always use the default browser available on their PCs, which incidentally always turns out to be the infamous Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). That’s an astonishing number, considering the fact that it increases the chances of a visitor coming across the same web-page while browsing.

The report, which was prepared using data collected over the first 6 months of 2008, says that 16,000 websites are tagged as malicious every single day. An interesting thing to note is that, according to the report, Google-owned Blogger.com has been cited as the No. 1 host for malicious content. This can be credited to the fact that almost anyone with an email ID can create a blog on Blogger.com. A majority of beginners choose blogger as the platform they begin with, owing to its simplicity and the fact that it falls under Google’s roof. Similarly, Yahoo owned Geocities has also been identified as the simplest target. What blogger is to Blogs, Geocities is to web-sites.

The report says that 2 percent of all the websites identified are from Blogger.com. It is a no-shocker that 50% of all the corporate PCs are infected.

A publication known for its bold covers is now attempting to go where no magazine has gone before.

Esquire has announced its September issue will boast an electronic cover that will flash the declaration “The 21st Century Begins Now.” The special issues will be seen only at newsstands, and only in 100,000 issues nationwide — about a seventh of the magazine’s total circulation — according to the New York Times.

The cover, created by E Ink, will stay powered for a full 90 days. A tiny battery is actually embedded inside. Each has to be inserted by hand, then delivered on a refrigerated truck to avoid losing significant power. The technology’s been used in things like in-store displays but never on a magazine, Esquire’s editor tells the Times.

The electronic cover came at a six-figure price tag but is supported by Ford, which will have an ad on the inside. Esquire bought exclusive rights to the technology through 2009.

E Ink, interestingly, also developed the technology in Amazon’s Kindle e-book device, the Times points out.

Speech Recognition in YouTube Lets You Search for Spoken Content

This is huge. Google has added speech recognition capability in some YouTube videos that enables you to search for text spoken in these videos.

To try speech recognition in YouTube yourself, add this gadget to your Google homepage. The search is currently limited to some political videos only but a good hint of what is yet to come in Google search.

If your search query match some YouTube video, the positions are indicated by yellow markers - hover the mouse to read the transcribed text as in the screenshot.

Like Blinkx search, Google uses their own speech recognition technologies to listen to the audio portion of the video and then transcribe speech into text.

And this happens real fast - Google can search and transcribe text from new videos with hours after they get uploaded on YouTube.

Imagine how useful Google search will become when it expands their video speech recognition to other video content like TV clips, news videos, video podcasts, etc.

But one of the things really holding it back was the lack of a desktop client. Twitter has many including my personal favourite, TWhirl, but Plurk had none. Well not anymore.

Duncan Riley over at the Inquisitr has put together an Adobe AIR app called Plurkair which he says is a very basic client. He apparently tested it on a Mac but he figures it should work perfectly OK on Windows as well.

But no sooner had Duncan announced his creation than someone burst his bubble by announcing that someone else had already made their own Adobe AIR app for Plurk! This one is called Plurkit.

So now you’re suddenly spoilt for choice. One minute you have none and then suddenly you have two to choose from. Choices, choices….

WordPress 2.6 Released Officially

WordPress 2.6 has been officially released today. Matt surprised many of us by releasing WordPress 2.6 almost a month ahead of schedule.

There are several new features in WordPress 2.6. The WordPress team have also created a video that demonstrates the new features bundled with WordPress 2.6.
