1. Turn on your firewall on your pc

2. Use a free virus removal tool

3. Always make sure that your security settings in Internet Explorer are correct

4. Always make sure that you regularly update your anti virus software program with the latest updates

5. Avoid downloading suspicious files from the internet

6. Do not surf bad or unknown websites as they can trigger infectious installations without your knowledge

Most virus programs can replicate themselves and infect many computers without the users direct awareness. Most of these malicious software programs are programmed with the sole purpose of deleting system files, damaging programs as well as reformatting your hard drives. The most common symptom associated with computer viruses is the fact that they cause severe degradations in your system speed which comes as a result of the fact that these programs use up large amount of system memory. By accessing task manager you will be able to see the memory usage of various programs which will also allow you to disable any programs which appear to be consuming large amounts memory.

Most modern tools are designed to scan various programs on your computer with the hope of identifying virus signatures or patterns. A signature is a bye pattern that is usually part of a certain family of viruses, so if an anti virus removal tool detects these patterns or signatures within the file it will instantly notify the user that the file should either be deleted or quarantined. Sometimes it can become very difficult to detect these signatures as malicious infections of this nature are often able to modify their code on different infections.

This is why it is essential to ensure that you perform continuous updates to these tools which will help you stay up to date with the latest threats. If you search the web you will find many free virus scan programs that offer great features and solid performances. If you are thinking about using totally free anti infection applications then think twice as the chances of them causing even more hassles for your computer is very high. To add to this it is also recommended that you do not use free tools as they can inflict the same sort of damage on your computer system because of their harmful nature.

In recent times many people have searched endlessly for terms like " how do I get rid of a virus for free " only to be let down at the very fact that most of these applications are indeed malicious by nature and have the ability to inflict more problems in terms of instability. Alerts that mention warning spyware detected on your computer is another clear indication that a virus, adware or some other form of infection could have entered your computer system. Never leave signs like " warning spyware detected on your computer " because your system is warning you that is has become infected. You can remove trojans and other malicious software with highly rated and solid anti infection programs like this.

Security Console MySQL & XAMPP Directory Protection

XAMPP SECURITY [Security Check 1.1]

This page gives you a quick overview of the security status of your XAMPP installation. (Please continue reading after the table.)

The green marked points are secure; the red marked points are definitively unsecure and the yellow marked points couldn't be checked (for example because the sofware to check isn't running).

To fix the problems for mysql, phpmyadmin and the xampp directory simply use

=> http://localhost/security/xamppsecurity.php <=

Some other important notes:

All these test are made available ONLY to the host "localhost" (127.0.0.1).

For FileZilla FTP und Mercury Mail, you must fix all security problems by yourself! Sorry.

If your computer is blocked by a firewall or not online, your servers are SECURE against outside attacks.

If servers are not running, they are also SECURE!

Please consider this: With more XAMPP security, some examples will NOT execute error free. If you use PHP in "safe mode" for example, some functions of this security frontend will not work anymore. Often more security means less functionality.

         The XAMPP default ports:

Microsoft has always been successful in changing the way we look at our operating systems. Right from the time of the Disk Operating System, it has been instrumental in enhancing operating systems and enhancing the user experience when it comes to Operating System. With Windows 7, it has taken the concept of Operating Systems to a whole new level.
The most visible enhancements that Windows 7 are the enhancements in the graphical user interface. The Windows 7 interface is like nothing we have ever seen, and yet a practical enhancement to the Windows XP interface that we are so used to. One of these enhancements is the Windows 7 icons.

File icons are the small images that are used to identify and describe the type of file. For example, if it is a Microsoft Word Document, it can be recognized by the now generic blue ‘W’ in a blue bordered box, complete with a blue box with blue lines inside it. It is a misunderstanding that file icons have only a cosmetic value. Icons are important for us to understand whether the file has been recognized by the Operating System and are therefore usable or not.

Changing icons was quite difficult during the time of Windows 98 and Windows XP. However, with the enhancements in Windows 7, changing icons is a fun and easy way to change the look of your operating system.

In some cases, one can recognize whether a hardware like a scanner or a webcam has been installed and is usable or not, just by looking at whether the hardware has taken an icon from the operating system or not.

Though icons are such an important part of the operating system, it does not mean that you cannot change the icons from the generic icons that are available with Windows 7. You can either change the entire icon set, that means all the icons for all your files, or change single icons for your files. Icon files are also necessary for programmers and designers, as they are useful for giving a special identity to their product.

One can get a number of free Windows 7 icons, both for personal as well as commercial use. To change the icons on your Windows 7 OS, right click on your desktop, and select Personalization. Click on the second tab, which says Change Desktop Icons. A new window will open up, which will show you the default icons on your Operating System. You can select any of them and then change them to the icons that you want.

Though free Windows 7 icons are quite easy to get, you should be careful about which sites you get your icons from. Make sure to install an antivirus software that keeps you safe from the viri and malware that floats all around the Internet. Also, you would have to be sure about the icon sets that you are installing, because some executable file can actually corrupt your operating system.

Laptop or computer viruses are spreading widespread among online consumers as of late mainly because it's very easy for the cyberpunk to wind up in your personal machine. Such different spy ware ailments enter the particular computer systems which enables it to truly slow your pc down or perhaps ruin it completely. Some malware are used against you that will steal your private data that you distribute on different sites.

Most of these malware packages will be sometimes difficult to recognize simply because they hide out on your hard drive devoid of you actually knowing that they're presently there. Occasionally you will observe a stall from the performance of your computer; although people who currently have turbo swift computer systems probably will not recognize much of a difference whatsoever. If you see your pc getting slower, notice strange pop-ups occurring, or your own browser proceeds to reroute you to pages in which you don’t choose, you may be attacked. And it can be as easy as replacing your own laptop adapters as this could easily destroy your battery power and slow your computer way down. In this case, you might want to take a look into buying a new adapter that may function on most laptop computers.

The good thing is is the fact that for all of the infections out there, often there is a software program you are able to use that will hinder them. Run a program scan on your desktop to check out exactly what the issue is before you make an attempt to treat it all by yourself. There are various different types of combating packages on the internet that you could obtain to be able to free your pc of these frustrating spyware programs. It is up to you to do some research to find which application you need to acquire to be able to relieve the issue.

Be cautious though any time downloading anything to your personal machine. Many times the applications that are offering quick alleviation of your pcs difficulties will do nothing but hinder your pc's functionality even more so. They certainly do a brilliant job of hiding their genuine objective only to make sure you acquire their particular software and wind up acquiring further malware on to your pc. Several 100 % free applications online point out one thing yet really do another.

The only way to know the truth if a specified software application works in locating the malware on your computer would be to perform your due diligence. Take a second to find out exactly which programs are generally doing the job for others and pay attention to the things they suggest. When you find a software program that may work, just simply try a search and find out what kind of details pops up. You could observe that it has assisted others whom had a similar problem, or perhaps you might notice that it is fake and a adware itself. If you’re still uncertain, get into computer forums and ask around or even make a number of phone calls to computer companies close to you and check with these folks.

Continuing to keep your personal machine safe and sound is as simple as determing the best software and scanning applications and functioning these on a day by day or perhaps weekly schedule. Stop visiting web pages in which appear fishy and move your own privacy configurations upward within your internet options panel. Prevention is definitely the easiest way to halt these kinds of bothersome spy ware applications from displaying on your hard drive.

New USB Flash Drive

Our lives, study, and working are making a closely knit with it. Nevertheless it' s also a place where is full of both danger and predator. Stealing personal information by means varying from social security number, credit card number, and passwords to just about everything, This reality resulted in the development of many utilities. Amongst them there are the key loggers.

What actually is a Key logger?
A key logger, sometimes called a keystroke logger, key logger, or system monitor, is a hardware device or small program that monitors each keystroke a user types on a specific computer keyboard.

According to experts, keystroke loggers pose more risk to PC users than any other tool used for committing crime online. They are small programs or hardware devices that monitor each keystroke you type on a specific computer keyboard, including typos, backspacing and retyping.
Many times it' s used as a type of hack tool, which is illegal in most cases. Meanwhile, there are people apply it as smart program of backup or some other serviceable purpose.
A classic Key logger is a tool that invisibility listens to the keyboard, records the typed keystrokes, passwords, composed emails, chat conversations, instant messages. It has become more and more popular this days. However, serving various goals.

Who uses the Key logger?
Primary, there' re three groups.

Parents
Nowadays, almost every child gets to access to the internet. Meanwhile, there' re also risk involved inevitably. According to a survey, 85% of children between the ages 6-16 encountered pornographic content intentionally or unintentionally (most of them while encountered while preparing their homework). 25% of children between ages 9-17 will freely disclose their home address in the Internet. 60% of children who committed suicide, declared their intentions online directly or indirectly. As scary as it sounds, the danger is ubiquitous in the virtual world. So every protective parent will choose a key logger to track what their kids are doing online and make a clean, healthy environment for them.

Spouse
Took place in United States which includes married couples only, 56% of the participants of the survey said that during their marriage they had at least one sexual encounter with a person that is not their spouse.

The partners seem to use the computer late at night, they drop the screen down when someone enters the room and they like to be addicted to the computer. Their acting suspiciously could be signs of an affair. The Internet, as we know,is a place that has made it extremely easy to carry on an affair with anyone anywhere in the world. Key loggers may be sophisticated enough to monitor for specific activity, as to retrieve the relationship and find out the truth, so it' s is a principal option.

Employers
it' s almost a line principle that employers monitor employees during working hours, especially in IT company. Key logger software installed in the company computers can record detailed activities of employees, which varied from emails to websites visited. Fortunately for employers, most of the monitoring can do a positive effect of employees' working discipline, in other words, creating more profit.

Besides, key logger is applied for recovering password, keeping track of suspicious activity on personal own computer.

How to identify a high quality Key logger?
Key logger such as Spy-Agent is one of the high quality key logger in the market now. Except the very basic features, it characterizes a the number of additional functions. Configurable self-removal.

Logs can be saved to a portable device or transferred by three basic means – email, LAN and FTP
Great additional parental control features -both of the Parental Control options and all of the filtering ones except the Ability to watch certain programs’ and Several days report building’ are implemented.

If you buy items online, surf the internet or use email then here are several tips to keeping your computer and your personal information secure.

Many people find it very easy to safeguard themselves by installing antivirus protection. Most antivirus protection software protects your computer from known viruses and Trojan horses. If a new virus is detected, your virus software will automatically download the new definition so that your computer will be safe.

Trojan horses are tiny programs that are downloaded inadvertently from the web. These small programs look for personal information and secretly upload it to a database. Many computer users have lost personal and financial information with the use of Trojan Horses.

One of the most damaging of all malicious software is the back door Trojan virus. Unlike many other types of malicious code, the back door Trojan virus is designed specifically to take advantage of vulnerabilities in the operating system such as Windows. The virus uses a back door into the computer too steal personal information, wipe files, or do other types of damage. To make matters worse, some of these back door Trojan horses disguise themselves and hide from anti virus software. Some are even intelligent enough to disable and render unusable your anti virus and firewall software.

You should also protect your computer from Spyware. Spyware is a tiny program that is downloaded usually when you download another program for free off the web. Spyware can be very irritating. Spyware keeps records of what your search for online and then sends you advertisements. Spyware can be difficult to erase.

It is also vital to protect yourself from Spoof emails. Spoof emails look like real emails from Ebay, Paypal, Banks and big credit card companies, but they are fake. Most spoof emails ask you to provide a website with financial information and then they steal this information. If you receive any emails that ask you for financial details, shut your browser, open up a new browser and contact your company's web site personally to see if there is a message for you.

Steps you can take to avoid problems with viruses and Trojans include being vigilant and paying attention to how your computer appears to be running. If you notice a decrease in performance that cannot be easily explained, or if you see an icon you do not recognize on the taskbar, it is a good idea to scan your computer and look for problems. Paying attention to your own computer, and using your own common sense, is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your computer.

If you’re going to connect to the internet, you need to protect your computer, otherwise it’s like leaving your front door wide open with a big ‘Robbers Welcome’ doormat on your front step. You’ve probably heard all the terms – such as virus, hacker, firewall, spyware and a million more – but perhaps think that the anti-virus programme that came with the computer, or that your PC-savvy mate downloaded for you is enough to keep you safe, right? Wrong …

First of all, you need a firewall. This is your first line of defence, making it extremely difficult for any hacker or malicious programme to get through. Nothing is 100% impenetrable, however, and an anti-virus programme that will always be on the lookout for anything nasty that manages to find its way in is essential.

But there are things that manage to get onto your pc in the most unlikely of ways: it can be inadvertently added by you as you download music, screensavers or games onto your PC, or it can even be added by someone you know and trust, such as a suspicious spouse or your employer. This is Spyware and is a frightening breach of privacy which allows people or programmes to see what you’re doing, what sites you look at and even log your keystrokes so that they can reproduce everything you type, such as passwords and credit card details.

The only way to truly guard against spyware is to have a dedicated programme that detects and removes it.

So, you have your firewall and your anti-virus programme in place; surely an anti-spyware programme is just money down the drain? Unfortunately not: this will fill the cracks left by your other security programmes, and although it will not make your computer completely impenetrable (unfortunately the people writing these programmes are extremely good at what they do) it will be the equivalent of locking all your doors and windows and having an alarm system armed before you leave your house – someone could still get in if they really wanted to, but they’d probably rather go next door, where they’ve rather invitingly left a downstairs window open.

People are now using their computers for a range of personal and business applications, the loss or infiltration of which could do them serious emotional and financial damage. Taking preventative measures to ensure your online security should be as natural as closing the door behind you when you go out, and there are affordable and easy to use programmes out there to help you do just that.

A personal computer is made up of multiple physical components of computer hardware, upon which can be installed an operating system and a multitude of software to perform the operator's desired functions.
Though a PC comes in many different forms, a typical personal computer consists of a case or chassis in a tower shape (desktop) and the following parts:

The motherboard is the main component inside the case. It is a large rectangular board with integrated circuitry that connects the rest of the parts of the computer including the CPU, the RAM, the disk drives (CD, DVD, hard disk, or any others) as well as any peripherals connected via the ports or the expansion slots.

Components directly attached to the motherboard include:

* The central processing unit (CPU) performs most of the calculations which enable a computer to function, and is sometimes referred to as the "brain" of the computer. It is usually cooled by a heat sink and fan.

* The chip set mediates communication between the CPU and the other components of the system, including main memory.

* RAM (Random Access Memory) stores all running processes (applications) and the current running OS.

* The BIOS includes boot firmware and power management. The Basic Input Output System tasks are handled by operating system drivers.

* Internal Buses connect the CPU to various internal components and to expansion cards for graphics and sound.

o Current

- The north bridge memory controller, for RAM and PCI Express
# PCI Express, for expansion cards such as graphics and physics processors, and high-end network interfaces
- PCI, for other expansion cards
- SATA, for disk drives

o Obsolete

- ATA (superseded by SATA)
- AGP (superseded by PCI Express)
- VLB VESA Local Bus (superseded by AGP)
- ISA (expansion card slot format obsolete in PCs, but still used in industrial computers)

* External Bus Controllers support ports for external peripherals. These ports may be controlled directly by the south bridge I/O controller or based on expansion cards attached to the motherboard through the PCI bus.

o USB
o FireWire
o eSATA
o SCSI
Etc.

More computer intruders are boldly coming forward and are looking for ways to attack helpless computer users with valuable information stored in their PCs. Intruders are getting their hands on the latest security measures brought out by various developers and are looking for ways to get through them.

Anti-virus software developers are doing their best to ensure every computer user’s safety and security from potential attacks by always updating their virus definitions and cleaning capabilities, as well as strengthening your firewalls. Sometimes however, it is not enough as intruders can be one or more steps ahead. They use various means of attacking computers so it is sometimes hard to tell what they’re going to do next.

One of the ways is hacking in order to retrieve your password. Think of the many things they can do once they get your passwords – they can access any online accounts you may have, access your email to send and retrieve messages from your address, enter secure networks – the possibilities seem to be limitless. In order to prevent these things from happening, you should have password protection.

The first thing you should do is secure your files and folders by using any password protection software, especially your highly important files and folders which could be potential targets of intruders. If these files are left unprotected, it would be easier for these intruders to get a hold of them and do what they want. Aside from that, other users of your computer (example – your kids) can accidentally move them or even delete them, which can be prevented by password protection.

Hackers and intruders would have an easier time figuring passwords out if they remain the same for a long period of time. It would be better for you if you change passwords regularly, especially for your more important data, for added security. By doing so, the intruders would have to start over again since you have a new password, thus making the possibility of frustrating them greater.

It would also be harder for hackers to figure out your password if you use a number of different characters, especially if it is a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols found in your keyboard. Of course, it will be harder for you to remember a combination of these three also, so you have to make sure to memorize the combination, more so if you regularly change passwords.

A useful tip: it is recommended not to use passwords that are codes like your birth date, spouse’s name, or other relevant information because it can make deducing your password quicker and easier. These “coded” passwords are often used by a lot of people, particularly in ATM machines and email passwords. By doing this, you are more susceptible to attacks since the password is easier to figure out.

Aside from following these tips which you can do on your own, it would be to your benefit if you obtain a password encryption software. The meaning of encryption is that it disguises the password written in cleartext format into ciphertext, which is a combination of different symbols. Decryption is what the intruders try to do, which is change the ciphertext into cleartext that they can see and understand.

A password encryption software, which is available in the Internet via online purchasing or in your computer software shop, encrypts your passwords in order to discourage intruders and prevent them from accessing your password protected files. Various software come with various levels of security, some of which contain a higher level of encryption than others. Higher encryption levels would make it more difficult for the intruder to break in.

Your PC safety and security is not limited to anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and firewalls, because the passwords themselves can be targeted by unauthorized people. It would be better for your overall security if you take the necessary precautions and means when it comes to dealing with password protection. Securing your important files and folders with passwords, changing them regularly, using a combination of characters, and encrypting them through a password encryption software, would ensure your safety from password hackers.

Overcoming Program Not Responding

When using the computer, some programs that have been opened often experienced not responding. This, to slow down other programs, waiting for the program is closed. If the process fails, you have to open the Task Manager with Ctrl + Alt + Del. Will surely annoy you. It would be better if the program is not responding quickly closed automatically. Here are the steps:

1. Open Regitry Editor

2. In the Registry Editor window, click the HKEY_USERS> DEFAULT> ControlPanel> Desktop.

3. See the entry on the window right AutoEndTasks If entry is missing, then you must make the first step right-click with your mouse to the right, select New> DWORD Value and give name AutoEndTasks.

4. Double-click the entry, give the value 1 in Value Data.

5. Click Ok, refresh (F5), and close the registry and restart the computer.

Not at all easy and you will not be disappointed if your computer error

History of phreaking

The precise origins of phone phreaking are unknown, although it is believed[who?] that phreak-like experimentation began with widespread deployment of automatic switches on the telephone networks. In the United States, AT&T began introducing automatic switches for long distance and certain forms of trunking carriers in the mid-to-late 1950s. With the introduction of these switches, the general population began, for the first time, to interact with computing power on a large scale.

Phreaking can be viewed as an extension of this, where individuals interested in computers and technology, yet unable to further that interest for a variety of reasons, turned to the only available option: the computer controlled telephone network.[original research?]

AT&T's fully automatic switches use tone dialing, a form of in-band signaling, and include some tones which are for internal telephone company use. One internal use tone is a tone of 2600 Hz which causes a telephone switch to think the call was over, and could be exploited to provide free long-distance and international calls.

The tone was discovered in approximately 1957, by Joe Engressia, a blind seven-year old boy. Engressia was skilled with perfect pitch, and discovered that whistling the fourth E above middle C — a frequency of 2600 Hz — would stop a dialed phone recording. Unaware of what he had done, Engressia called the phone company and asked why the recordings had stopped. This was the beginning of his love of exploring the telephone system.

Other early phreaks, such as "Bill from New York", began to develop a rudimentary understanding of how phone networks worked. Bill discovered that a recorder he owned could also play the tone at 2600 Hz with the same effect. John Draper discovered through his friendship with Engressia that the free whistles given out in Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes also produced a 2600 Hz tone when blown (providing his nickname, "Captain Crunch"). This allowed control of phone systems that worked on Single Frequency (SF) controls. One could sound a long whistle to reset the line, followed by groups of whistles (a short tone for a "1", two for a "2", etc.) to dial numbers.

Blog is short for "web log" is a form of web applications that resemble the writings (published as posts) in a public web pages. These writings are often published in reverse order (newest content first and then followed the older content), though not forever so. Web sites like this can usually be accessed by all Internet users according to topic and purpose of the user's blog.
History

Media blog was first popularized by Blogger.com, owned by PyraLab before finally PyraLab diakuisi by the end of 2002 Google.Com ago. Since then, numerous applications are open source, which is applied to the development of the writers of these blogs.

Blog has a very diverse functions, from a diary, media publicity in a political campaign, through media programs and corporations. Some blogs are maintained by a single author, while others are by some authors. Many weblogs also have the facility of interaction with the audience, such as using the guest book and comments field that can allow its visitors to leave comments on the contents of the papers published, however, there is also the opposite or non-interactive.

Web sites that related to each other thanks to the weblog, or in total is a collection of weblogs are often referred to as the blogosphere. Whenever a collection of wave activity, information and opinions are very large recurring to some very controversial subject or happening in the blogosphere, it is often referred to as storm blogstorm or blog.

- 1950s: amateur radio enthusiasts defined the term hacking as creatively tinkering to improve performance.

1959: hack is defined in MIT's Tech Model Railroad Club Dictionary as "1) an article or project without constructive end; 2) a project undertaken on bad self-advice; 3) an entropy booster; 4) to produce, or attempt to produce, a hack(3)." hacker is defined as "one who hacks, or makes them." Much of the TMRC's jargon is later imported into early computing culture.

-1963: The first recorded reference to hackers in the computer sense is made in The Tech (MIT Student Magazine).

- 1972: Stewart Brand publishes "S P A C E W A R: Fanatic Life and Symbolic Death Among the Computer Bums" in Rolling Stone, an early piece describing computer culture. In it, Alan Kay is quoted as saying "A true hacker is not a group person. He's a person who loves to stay up all night, he and the machine in a love-hate relationship... They're kids who tended to be brilliant but not very interested in conventional goals[...] It's a term of derision and also the ultimate compliment."

- 1980: The August issue of Psychology Today prints (with commentary by Philip Zimbardo) "The Hacker Papers", an excerpt from a Stanford Bulletin Board discussion on the addictive nature of computer use.

- 1982: In the film TRON, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) describes his intentions to break into ENCOM's computer system, saying "I've been doing a little hacking here". CLU is the software he uses for this.

- 1983: The movie WarGames, featuring a computer intrusion into NORAD, is released. A gang of 6 teenagers is caught breaking into dozens of computer systems, including that of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Newsweek features the cover story "Beware: Hackers at play." First Usenet post on the use of the term hacker in the media (CBS News) to mean computer criminal. Pressured by media coverage of computer intrusions, Congress begins work on new laws for computer security.

- 1984: Steven Levy publishes Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution. The book publicizes, and perhaps originates the phrase "Hacker Ethic" and gives a codification of its principles.

- 1986: The Mentor writes The Hacker Manifesto, and publishes it in Phrack.

- 1988: Stalking the Wily Hacker, an article by Clifford Stoll appears in the May 1988 issue of the Communications of the ACM and uses the term hacker in the sense of a computer criminal. Later that year, the release by Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. of the so-called Morris worm provoked the popular media to spread this usage.

- 1989: The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll is published, and its popularity further entrenches the term in the public's consciousness.

- 2000: Michael Calce (better known as MafiaBoy) attacks and disables Yahoo!, Amazon.com, CNN, Dell, Inc., and E*TRADE. President calls for emergency Cyber Security Summit as a result of the attacks. The estimated losses in the attacks was 1.2 billion USD.

- 2008: Global movement of Hackerspaces emerges. These labs are technological, cultural and social creative places enabling hackers to develop projects together, code, create open source projects or hardware designs.

In computing, a hacker is a person in one of several distinct (but not completely disjoint) communities and subcultures :

a. A community of enthusiast computer programmers and systems designers, originated in the 1960s around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s Tech Model Railroad Club (TMRC) and MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. This community is notable for launching the free software movement. The World Wide Web and the Internet itself are also hacker artifacts. The Request for Comments RFC 1392 amplifies this meaning as "a person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular." See Hacker (programmer subculture).

b. People committed to circumvention of computer security. This primarily concerns unauthorized remote computer break-ins via a communication networks such as the Internet (Black hats), but also includes those who debug or fix security problems (White hats), and the morally ambiguous Grey hats. See Hacker (computer security).

c. The hobbyist home computing community, focusing on hardware in the late 1970s (e.g. the Homebrew Computer Club and on software (computer games, software cracking, the demoscene) in the 1980s/1990s. The community included Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates and created the personal computing industry. See Hacker (hobbyist).

Today, mainstream usage mostly refers to computer criminals, due to the mass media usage of the word since the 1980s. This includes script kiddies, people breaking into computers using programs written by others, with very little knowledge about the way they work. This usage has become so predominant that a large segment of the general public is unaware that different meanings exist. While the use of the word by hobbyist hackers is acknowledged by all three kinds of hackers, and the computer security hackers accept all uses of the word, free software hackers consider the computer intrusion related usage incorrect, and try to disassociate the two by referring to security breakers as "crackers" (analogous to a safecracker).

Two simple precautions can help keep your computer virus free - install and use software from reliable vendors and avoid opening unexpected e-mail attachments.

Almost all e-mail attachments are potential virus carriers. Some of the most famous viruses were distributed by accessing address books of infected computers and sending e-mail (with attachments) to everyone in the address book. Even those from known senders should be regarded with suspicion - e-mail addresses can easily be faked to appear to be from someone you know.

The 'Melissa' virus that appeared in 1999, originally posted on an Internet newsgroup, was distributed in a Microsoft Word document. When downloaded and opened the virus accessed the user's address book and sent copies of the document (along with the virus) to the first 50 people in the user's address book.

Every computer that received the virus sent out an additional 50 copies, creating a worldwide slowdown in Internet networks. The effect took only a few hours. Another widespread virus distributed by e-mail was the 'ILOVEYOU' virus of 2000. When double clicked it sent copies of itself to every e-mail address in the infected computers address book. But far from a problem of the past, viruses are still very much with us.

Antivirus Software

Antivirus software is available in both commercial and freeware versions with a variety of features and prices, usually from free to less than $50.

Most antivirus software works by examining files as they arrive at the computer and by scanning later at configurable pre-set times. The programs work by examining each e-mail attachment and downloaded file looking for virus 'signatures'. If a virus is found the user will be alerted and infected programs and attachments can be cleansed of the virus or, if not possible, infected files can be deleted or placed into 'quarantine' where they can't be run.

Updates

Whare are signatures? All programs have instructions in a pattern. Computer viruses - like their biological counterparts - come in known, though evolving, patterns. The fact of evolution is the reason virus-checking files need to be regularly updated. Updated files contain lists and the characteristics of new signatures.

Most antivirus software can be configured to alert you when the virus checking files are out of date, and even to automatically refresh signature files with the latest versions.

User Participation

Users can become complacent after installing antivirus software, thinking they're totally protected and don't need to worry about becoming infected.

Apart from the fact that antivirus software is written by humans, who can make errors, vendors can only react to viruses after they're created. By that time, much damage can already have been done. An e-mail attachment or program may be infected with a new type of virus that your software cannot (yet) detect.

Some antivirus software can - to a limited extent - detect virus activity even without being able to identify a particular virus. This is an extra level of protection against the latest viruses, but still shouldn't allow users to become overconfident. Always use trusted sources for downloading software and treat every e-mail attachment with caution.

source : http://www.freearticles.com

Phreaking is a slang term coined to describe the activity of a subculture of people who study, experiment with, or explore telecommunication systems; such as equipment and systems connected to public telephone networks. As telephone networks have become computerized, phreaking has become closely linked with computer hacking.
This is sometimes called the H/P culture (with H standing for Hacking and P standing for Phreaking).

The term "phreak" is a portmanteau of the words "phone" and "freak", and may also refer to the use of various audio frequencies to manipulate a phone system. "Phreak", "phreaker", or "phone phreak" are names used for and by individuals who participate in phreaking. A large percentage of the phone Phreaks were blind. Since identities were usually masked, an exact percentage cannot be calculated.
Whether we use them for simple functions such as typing our homework and business reports, up to more important acts like online business meetings and transactions, one cannot deny that computers are a big part in our daily lives. Using a computer, particularly the Internet, is one task that even a ten year old can do at this particular period in time.

With the growing increase of popularity and reliance on computers, as well as the demand for it, security risks have also gone up, which is a reality that cannot be ignored. With the billions of information bits being spread across the World Wide Web, hackers and computer intruders (criminals) see the value in focusing their attention to computers and the Internet. The information they would retrieve here is (more often than not) more useful than when doing it the old-fashioned way.

As such, these intruders have devised some methods into getting information out of computer users, with or without these people knowing that they’ve been hacked into. As is the case in real life, there are some computer programs that are disguised to be innocent, but actually act as spies, providing information to the intruders. These malicious programs which are security threats are called computer viruses.

Computer viruses should not be taken lightly. They work in many different ways; one of them may be to provide data to the one who planted the virus. Other viruses can simply be annoying - slowing down your computer, building unwanted files, etc. – while some can be very disruptive, such as deleting your hard drive, compromising your operating system, etc.

As such, there are different types of viruses which normally differ in how they function and how they are spread. Examples of these include Trojan horses, worms, email viruses, and logic bombs. It would be important for you to know these kinds of viruses in order to better protect you from them, as well as to have the proper programs to get rid of them.

Trojan horses are simply computer program that cannot reproduce themselves, but can do damage anywhere from minimal to extremely dangerous. It usually disguises itself as a common file (maybe an .mp3 music file or a .jpeg picture file) but does the damage when the computer user opens it. This is why you should take extra care when opening a suspicious looking file – it could very well be a Trojan horse.

Worms are self reproducing programs that mainly use security holes in order to spread itself throughout the network. If your computer is infected with a worm and is able to replicate itself a number of times, this usually causes your computer to slow down noticeably since it uses your computer resources and memory to do so. They often use security flaws in operating systems (such as Windows) in order to self reproduce.

Email viruses are self explanatory – they spread via email. Once a user opens the infected email, what it usually does is send itself to other computer users via the email addresses found in the user’s address book. Because it uses email and a lot of people open emails without really checking or being careful, it spreads very quickly across the entire world and can cause chaos within just a few days.

Logic bombs are viruses that target specific computer applications, causing them to crash (for example, Windows). This can also be spread via email attachments or by innocently downloading it off the Internet. It can cause a great deal of harm (particularly if it infects Windows and the like), or just a small amount (small program).

Fortunately for computer users, there are anti-virus programs available anywhere, whether in the Internet or at the computer shop. These programs specifically target over thousands of viruses and wipe them clean from your system (if infected) or protect you from incoming attacks (if not yet infected).

Anti-virus programs are constantly updated (normally everyday) since there are always new virus definitions each day, and you can get infected by these new viruses. These software developers are always researching about the newest viruses to ensure you, the user, are protected from these viruses as much as possible. Your PC security and safety are always being considered.
