We’ve
had a great piece of information passed on to us from Newfoundland’s own
Triathlon Guru, Scott Ledrew:

As
many of our members may be aware, Ottawa will be hosting the ITU World Duathlon
Championships this August after Segovia Spain pulled out as the host City
earlier this year.

As
a result of this last minute change, Newfoundland and Labrador athletes now have
the ability to register for the event without having to pre-qualify in one of
the selection races.

Those athletes wishing to race or participate in the
World Championships, to be held in Ottawa this August, must register by
this Friday, March 8th in order to get a spot on the team.

What
a fantastic opportunity to experience a World Championship event within close
reach of home. The only catch is that there are two days remaining to
claim a bib!

I
hope a number of you decide to take on the challenge and come back with some
Team Canada swag. The World Championship events are a memorable
experience and this one will prove to be easy on the wallet and on vacation
days!

Remember,
sign up is only open until tomorrow.

details can be found at the Triathlon Canada website:

Applications are now open for the 2013 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2013.

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program has distributed thousands of dollars to deserving students around the province in its over 20 year history. The financial assistance it provides to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials assists in offsetting costs of training and competition. In order for students to qualify for a scholarship, they must be residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, attending a post-secondary institution and be registered members of a provincial sport organization.

For the sixth year, the Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship is being sponsored by Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. Valued at $1,000, the scholarship commemorates Frank Butler, who was vital to the development of athletics at Memorial University, and played an integral part in developing inter-university sport experience across Canada.

All applications for the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program will be used to select the winners of the $5,000 Team Gushue Scholarship Award. The Team Gushue award is presented annually during the Premier’s Athletic Awards reception. Athletes must apply through the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program to be eligible for this award. The Team Gushue Scholarship Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence was established in 2007 in recognition of Team Gushue’s gold medal victory at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The Award will be presented to one male and one female athlete annually, who are currently attending, or planning to attend, a recognized post-secondary institution and have competed in a national or international level sporting competition in their last competitive season.

For more detailed information on the qualification criteria for the scholarship program and to access the scholarship application form, visit the Sport NL website at www.sportnl.ca/programs/scholarship_program.php
