Forest lands are allocated to public and private socio-economic institutions, mainly to local level stakeholders such as individuals, households, and communities. Analyzing this policy development and implementation provides essential insight into the success or failure of such decentralization programs.

Improvement of the Economic Sustainability of Natural Forest Management in Suriname

This project aims to utilize a sustainable forest management system that focuses on the tendering of potential crop trees, in preference to the Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname (CELOS) management system (CMS). Improving capacity building related with spatial basis become very important considering more than 90 percent of data related with geographical references data.
Conflicts to determine land boundaries is one of the main problems when managing natural resources in Indonesia. The process of defining boundaries until now has been weak both in maps and in the field. Geographic information systems (GIS)can become a very important tool to help defining boundaries and managing landscape areas.
Being GIS as an important tool for institutions and companies working with natural resource and environmental management, they should have staff trained and competent in working with GIS. This is also in accordance with the mandate of Law. No. 4/2011 of Indonesia about Geospatial Information, article 55, which states that the implementation of geospatial information should be made by geospatial competent people.
In order to increase the human resource of geospatial or GIS, TBI Indonesia in collaboration with the Forest Research and Development Agency (FORDA), INSTIPER, ESRI Indonesia and PT EXOL INNOVINDO will hold a GIS training for basic level from June 13 to 20 in Yogyakarta followed with Certification for GIS profession 21 and 22 of June 2011.

The specific objectives of the training are:
1. To improve the skill and knowledge to provide spatial data and information that can be use for decision making process, planning activities, measurement, and monitoring activities, etc.
2. To improve the skill and knowledge of staff of private companies and consultant working on forestry issues.
3. To improve the skill and knowledge of at least 4 staffs of FORDA and the Center for Forestry Education and Training for its role in continuing the process of training and certification.

Cameroon

In recent years, the question of how to broaden and diversify the financial basis for sustainable forest management (SFM) has received major attention. In Cameroon a diminishing donor involvement in the forest sector has been observed. A rapid assessment of existing financial mechanisms for SFM in Cameroon is to provide a knowledge and capacity basis for drafting the outline of a National Strategy for Forest Financing for Cameroon.

Capacity Improvement for Efficient Forest Carbon Stock Assessment

Suriname has expressed its preparedness to follow the recommendations of the UNFCCC decision calling on developing countries to prepare for, and implement activities, related to enhancement of forest carbon stocks and avoidance or reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), which account for approximately 15% of annual global emissions.

Development of organizational models for community forestry in DR Congo

In order to involve local communities in forest management and promote better rural development, the Congolese forest code introduced community forestry. The Limbe timber market was monitored for a period of more than a year which showed volumes and species sold and potential supply zones in the region. These practices have historically been exploitative, prompting a need for restrictive policies on logging allowances. While production forests are almost entirely composed of fast growing species, this timber is not of the quality needed for building or manufacturing furniture, leaving a great demand for illegal logging of natural forests. On an international scale, it is recognized that unsustainable logging practices in tropical forests has the potential to greatly contribute to carbon dioxide emissions. Such harvesting is discouraged by the United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) program.

The effects of Sustainable Forest Management on Biodiversity

Forest certification is widely seen as an important component of strategies for conserving the world’s forests. Various institutions were visited, which resulted in the signing of a Partnership Agreement with Van Hall Larenstein (VHL) University of Applied Sciences (part of WUR). In Ghana however, the formal forest management strategies are skewed towards the satisfaction of the country's export needs and the interests of the urban population, much to the neglect of local community needs.

Exploring Innovative Processes, Institutional and Legal Changes for Improving Forest-Dependent Livelihoods in Ghana’s High Forest Zone

One of the main goals of establishing and managing the forests in Ghana by governments and individuals is to have a sustainable resource that can provide livelihoods. It was once very abundant in the natural forests of Bach Ma National Park, Thua Thien Hue province, and southward to Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai province. Due to improper management practices and overharvesting, the species is now endangered and urgently needs an adequate, integrated solution for sustainable use, conservation, and increased growth. Finding and implementing a solution to this problem also effectively works towards the goals of the National Forestry Strategy (NFS) of Vietnam for the period 2006-2020.

Creating Syngergy in Forest Research: HUAF-IDS Mutual Capacity Development in Forest Area

A North - South partnership between TBI Viet Nam, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry (HUAF), and IDS/Utrecht University (IDS/UU) has contributed to the institutional strengthening of HUAF and created a dynamic network of participants in various fields and disciplines.
