Based on real-life testimonies and case studies from the communities, the project compiles information about the impact of climate change and the adaptation practices that come from the traditional management of the natural resources and of the ecosystem. This information is gathered to develop public policy recommendations and advocacy activities to help Andean and Amazonian communities cope with the impacts of climate change.

Platform TRIDOM

Post-felling inspections of community forests in Lomie, East Cameroon.

Strengthening Effective Forest Governance Monitoring Practice

Improving forest governance is generally accepted as a key condition for the success of promoting legal logging and reducing deforestation, among others. Improving capacity building related with spatial basis become very important considering more than 90 percent of data related with geographical references data.
Conflicts to determine land boundaries is one of the main problems when managing natural resources in Indonesia. The process of defining boundaries until now has been weak both in maps and in the field. Geographic information systems (GIS)can become a very important tool to help defining boundaries and managing landscape areas.
Being GIS as an important tool for institutions and companies working with natural resource and environmental management, they should have staff trained and competent in working with GIS. This is also in accordance with the mandate of Law. No. 4/2011 of Indonesia about Geospatial Information, article 55, which states that the implementation of geospatial information should be made by geospatial competent people.
In order to increase the human resource of geospatial or GIS, TBI Indonesia in collaboration with the Forest Research and Development Agency (FORDA), INSTIPER, ESRI Indonesia and PT EXOL INNOVINDO will hold a GIS training for basic level from June 13 to 20 in Yogyakarta followed with Certification for GIS profession 21 and 22 of June 2011.

The specific objectives of the training are:
1. To improve the skill and knowledge to provide spatial data and information that can be use for decision making process, planning activities, measurement, and monitoring activities, etc.
2. To improve the skill and knowledge of staff of private companies and consultant working on forestry issues.
3. To improve the skill and knowledge of at least 4 staffs of FORDA and the Center for Forestry Education and Training for its role in continuing the process of training and certification.

A correlated pathway can explain the causes of tropical deforestation: occupation of forest areas is triggered by immigration to forest lands prompted by government decisions, such as road infrastructure projects, all of them with spin-off consequence of spontaneous colonization.

The functioning of the local wood market

Cameroon’s current roundwood production equals about 4 million m3 of which half is produced by industrial operators (formal sector) and the other half by small-scale operators, mainly operating without permits (informal sector), supplying principally the local market with cheap lumber.
The Programme for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources - South West Region (PSMNR-SWR) is looking for options how to supply the domestic market with legal timber. The Limbe timber market was monitored for a period of more than a year which showed volumes and species sold and potential supply zones in the region. The supply of chainsawn timber from the agricultural landscape has been studied by IITA around Yaoundé by making farm tree inventories and characterizing the different land uses combined with household interviews. Similar studies are conducted in South West Region.

Ecology of Endangered Species and their Conservation in Viet Nam

This project is part of an overall agreement with the Forest Science Institute of Viet Nam (FSIV) to support FSIV through PhD and post-doc research projects.

Enhancing legal timber production and trade: Creating enabling environments and opportunities for the private sector and other stakeholders

In Vietnam, as hosting country, the Netherlands, USA and other partners will co-organize a Country-led initiative on enhancing the trade in legally produced timber that will be held in January 2012.
