Just a quick fishing report. Got a small brook trout aprox 7-8 inches in the Flat Brook...I wasnt exactly close to the stocking areas either, and given the size/condition of the fish I think it may be a wild/native brook.

My first cast I casted out to a seem, and tried fishing the inner slow edge, although I completely missed it! My fly ( small flashback PT) landed in water that was almost completely motionless. I decided to let the fly drag back into me due to the weight of the line hanging off my rod. I tried to do it slowly to atleast simulate a drift, and that is when the brook hit my fly. Pretty weird but a fish is a fish!

I then got snagged about 1000 times and lost a bunch of gear...LDR'd one Rainbow, then called it quits.

Heading back today!

Scot did not have one in stock but he told me he would call the company . Sure enough he called me a day latter and said the factory rep was Flying up to the Bears Den show on Saturday and the rep would put the reel in his carry on luggage. I picked it up today in time for my trip. I met the rep at the show and thanked him for the extra effort.

I learned a valuable lesson this week. I went out to a local stream this week to survey the damage done by the hurricane this fall. The stream was completely changed. A nice stonefly hatch was going on so I set up and fished a few spots as I hiked downstream. While doing so I must have dropped my favorite box. Starting to hate my Simms waist pack. The lost box was filled with all of my go to flies. I didn't realize until the next day while I was cleaning my truck. I went back and hiked the stream but I didn't find the box. Man I've be bummed out. I've actually had trouble sleeping. Started tying last night like a man possessed.
Just thought maybe sharing my grief would make me feel a little better. Oh well.... still bummed. Going on another recon mission tomorrow morning.

About 5 years ago my brother, dad, my son and I started doing a little fly fishing trip. My dad lives in PA, My brother in NJ and my son and I in CT so most of our get together have been taking place in PA. We started out just staying at my dads and fishing out of the house, but we decided a couple years ago to get away from the house and go rent a cabin or something instead. Forces us to stay on the water longer and provides better quality time. Glad we did so and everyone enjoys it much better now that we are not fishing out of the house.

The past two years we fished penns creek and stayed in the apartment over PCA. As my dad gets older, just turned 70, he has little Patience for things like - no sponge to do the dishes. you know little things that don't bother us, but bother him. So with that said he doesn't want to stay in the PCA apartment and we are looking for a cabin to rent mid to late May. I know, tough time to find something but if anyone has any suggestions on cabins and even locations we are open to it. Mid may to first week in June just fits our schedules better - son is out of college and we got our turkey hunting in as well.

We've been thinking about moving north a little bit and i was thinking up near Kettle creek in Potter where I used to hunt, but that might be a little to far north.

Not being from the area it is harder for me to do the research and if it is not in a paper then my dad won't find it. He hates the computer. :D

Any suggestions on finding some places to stay would be helpful.

I been flyfishing for over 20year but the EU techniques learned through this site have been an epifany. My 13year old son has been bitten by the bug. We mostly fish small streams in the North Central PA wilds area. My son mostly indi nymphs with a 7'11 4wt and does quite well but he doesnt have a rod for the larger waters we fish. I have a 10'wt Z but need a small stream EU rod.

For him
Looking for a good rod either 10' 3wt or 10' 2wt for him around $300.00 or less.
For me
Looking for a 8.5'-9' 2wt or 3wt $300.00 or less.

With all the new rods I need help!

Fly Tying Goals- March 2012

I was just curious as to what you guys are tying at the moment, and what your goal is before the official start of the season despite the fact the majority of us fish year round.

I like to set monthly goals to see how I've been keeping up, I have a list about 200 patterns long to tie, and I'll never hit it but I like to try.

March goals-

1. I have many brands of fly boxes, CnF, Orvis, Cabelas, Grey's, random, etc. I have 2 empty boxes at the moment that I picked up when I was in Shannon's. One is a large grey's swingleaf. I want to fill that. I also have a small grey's that I will be using as "working" fly box while I'm fishing, a generalized selection of anything I think I'll fish that day. I want to stock that with my usuals.

Specific -

2.Tie a dozen flies a day

3.Tie at a minimum of 6 flies per pattern (really helps speed things up), working towards tying in dozens for later in the year. I'd be happy with 6 at a clip for the next couple of months.

4. Start tying dry flies. I want to get introduced to some basic dry flies. I have been tying just a year now, and while I am pretty well versed in nymphs, emergers, and streamers, I haven't even touched dry flies yet. I don't fish them much, so my pattern base isn't extensive, but I need a few to cover me.

5. Knock out all of my articulated streamers. I throw large articulated streamers, and my box got crushed last year between lending flies, losing a few (don't lose many with level mono leader and a davy's knot, but sometimes it is better letting go to the fly than killing the spot, or breaking your rod, haha)

6. Knock out the top 20 patterns on my list. I'll list a few

1. Polish Woven Nymphs
2. Drone Stone- despite it not producing last year, I'll put that negative on my skill vs. Aaron's pattern. Everyone I know kills it on that pattern.
3. Hopper Juan
4. Black Elk Hair Caddis
5. Loren William's Baron- biggest producer thus far this year.
6. Egan's Iron Lotus
7. Aaron's triple threat nymph
8. Kevin Compton's Tungsten Torpedo
9. X Caddis
10. Rich Strolis Hog Snare Streamer/Ice Pick Streamer

thats for starters.

I also want to inventory my fly tying supplies. I just moved all my tying stuff into a dedicated bedroom, nice new set up. And I found EverNote, great progrm for putting all my notes, wish lists, photo's, patterns, etc into order, but I need a print out for when I go shopping. I always end up with overstock.

Hello, I want to buy me a new rod and Im deciding between these two. Im from Czech Republic and I do a lot czech and french nymphing especially with long french leaders, but sometimes I switch to dry fly or small streamer.

I want this rod on trophy part of one river, where are larger rainbows. I have Hanak Czech nymph Champion rod in 3 wt which is too light for those fish. So I want some 4 wt rod, I dont want the sage although I believe they are quality rods, but a bit pricey for me and I want something else than have here in Czech rep. other fishermen.

I hear that Scott A4 10ft 4 wt is good nymph rod, I like the look, so I want know your opinion on that compare with St. Croix High Stick Drifter in 4 wt, which is quite interesting rod too (very nice components, rec guides, 3M blank and so but have strange modern look). I woul like to know what is the quality of manufactory of the rods, the quality of cork (which is quite important for me), action, suitability mainly for nymph than dry fly and small streamers, experiences with warranty by scott and St.croix, your personal preferences and so on.

Sorry for my english, and I thank you very much for every advice it will help me a lot.

In return I can offer my poor experiences with czech style nymphing and flies (sometimes I fish in some competitions and have fished also with our world champs) so feel free to ask me.

I currently have a 10ft 3wt Greys (the older model) and was considiering upgrading to a 10' 3wt ESN. For those of you on here that have used both or even the new ESN, is the extra $ worth it. I will let you know that I have never had any problems with my Greys, but all of the great reviews on the ESN have me itching to try one. I will say that casting dries with my Greys is far from pretty, and from what I have read the ESN does a pretty good job tossing dries. I don't dry fly fish often, but there have been times where I have been out nymping and a pretty good hatch has started, and I feel like my presentation is lacking with the the Greys. Thanks in advance.
