Other news sites such as The Age have limited their mobile home page too much, and provide no costomisation. News includes a lot more ok the home screen with extensive iPhone app like preference for customising the site to your Likings. News also provides a nice iPhone icon when you add it to you home screen.

I recently had the need for a physically accessible backup DNS server. Physically accessible meaning at my home. Currently I host a few websites on a number of Linux based servers. Initially the obvious way to implement a cheap backup DNS server would be to build a PC with Ubuntu Server installed.

Thankfully, my clever wife called me all sorts of names for wanting to bring a PC into the house. As a good husband does, I listened to her and decided to go with a Mac Mini running Leopard Server. Best idea ever.

Leopard Server could not have been easier to set-up. At one stage it prompted, “It appears you have an Airport Extreme. Would you like Leopard Server to configure it autmatically”. Yes please. A few tick boxes and minimal mucking around and I now have a home server running backup DNS, web, mail, central media storage, backup for our 2 laptops, sync to the Apple TV and printing (I even printed a document on the printer in my study while travelling at 160 km/h on the train between Ballarat and Melbourne).

I sound like a bit of wanker and most people don’t really get what I’m talking about, but since setting up the home server I’ve been preaching that no house is complete without one. I highly recommend it.
