All workers expect to get breaks for meals, and there is certainly no exception for truckers, who get hungry on the long haul. But stopping for food can be particularly bothersome for the trucker who wants to keep putting miles behind him. And it’s no easy feat to get the 18-wheeler through the McDonald’s drive through.

While there aren’t any drive-throughs for truckers yet, mobile food is on the rise, and there are a few interesting joints that are just as on the go as you are cooking up tasty fair around the country. The Progressive Path To Success As A First Time Owner Operator

My name is Doug Shields. I have been committed to the transportation industry for over two decades. I have sold for Volvo, Mack, International, and most recently Peterbilt. During that time I have noticed that the one thing sorely lacking in our industry is a comprehensive guide to buying that first truck. I’m not just talking about the truck itself or even a mechanical inspection. I’m talking about the entire process, the mindset required, the questions that need to be answered and a host of other topics regarding insurance, finance and other things that are too numerous to list here. I’m sure all owner operators would agree that the learning curve is quite steep and there are many things they would have done differently had they possessed the knowledge then that they have now. Speaking of Truckers…..

My name is Randal Adams and I am working on an upcoming book called; Speaking of Truckers. This hardcover book will feature interviews with over 50 professional drivers from all across North America. The interviews will be kept in the words of the drivers, to give the readers the feeling of having one on one conversation with the story tellers.

I do all the interviews over the phone, when the time is convenient for the driver. A normal interview last 30-40 minutes, but could go longer if the stories are really great.
I intend this book to be 100% positive, looking at the world of truck driving through the eyes of the men and women on the road every day doing the incredible job of keeping our country moving.

Some of the questions I will likely ask are:

How did you get into truck driving?
What is the most unusual load you’ve ever hauled?
What is the most interesting/unusual/inspiring thing you’ve ever seen while driving?
What is your least favorite place to haul?
What is your biggest pet peeve while driving?
Where are the best places to eat on the road?

There may be more questions, depending on how the interview goes, and which direction the stories take. The key word is stories. I’m looking for drivers that have great stories to tell; stories that are funny, heart warming, anger inducing, and thought provoking. I’ve known lots of drivers in my day, and I know they have the best stories to tell and don’t mind telling them. If this is you, you need to be in this book!
I have done interviews for author Rich Wolfe on three sport’s books; For Packer Fans Only, For Browns Fans Only, and For Steeler Fans Only. I have also published one interview type book of my own, Speaking of Rotary, and I’ve released one novel, The Flea Market as well.

I really want to bring this book to print as soon as possible. I have many truck drivers in my family, and I want to honor them and their profession with this work. Please help me by letting me interview you, or by passing this information along to someone else that might have a great story to tell.

How to Find a Good Semi Truck

While many trucks may look good on the outside, and even have sleepers and accessories that seem grand, the most important thing about a used semi-truck is the way it runs, and if it can take the rigors of the road that you are about to put it through.

Whether you’re shopping for a big rig or you’re examining the trucks for sale owned by a company that you’re thinking about driving for, mechanics should be key. As a trucker, and especially as a truck buyer, you’ll need to learn to prioritize. While the epitome of all trucks can certainly be made, you’ll have to pay quite a lot to get it. Most truckers can’t afford to have their wants and needs satisfied in every category. For this reason, checking out how well the truck does what it is designed to do should be your first move when looking to buy or drive a truck.

Of course, this means that one of the first things you will focus on is the engine. You’ll want to know what kind of transmission it is, especially if you are one of the few who has learned on an automatic transmission. Though most semi-trucks have manual transmissions, as this is much more convenient for the trucker, automatic semi-trucks are available, and if you’re not looking for one, you need to be sure you are not getting one.

When you discover that the truck you are looking at has a manual transmission, there are still questions you need to ask. Mainly, you’ll need to find out how many speeds the engine can carry. Ranging from nine to eighteen speeds, transmissions with more speeds allow truckers to have more control over the vehicle and make certain maneuvers easier.

After the engine, truckers need to consider safety features like lights and breaks. If you’re looking at a used truck, you’ll want to make sure all of the lights are intact. Also, you’ll need to make sure that the truck has the minimum number of lights needed to be legal, in addition to more if you feel that this is necessary. For breaks, truckers should be sure that the lines connecting breaks from truck to trailer are not broken. Furthermore, some truckers will want to see if the truck contains a jake break, or a device that helps truckers slow their trucks.

Finally, after determining that engine and safety equipment meet their standards, truckers will want to look at those factors that are not as important. For instance, truckers may then consider amenities in the trucks’ cabs, such as thermostat gauges, and other indicators that make trucking easier. In addition, truckers may want to see if the truck has other safety equipment or comfortable sleepers.

Although truckers can get their perfect truck either to own or to drive, most don’t believe it is worth the financial strain. By getting their priorities in order, drivers can make sure that they drive away with the truck that is best for them.

Are you looking to unload a heavy-duty truck? Things might be tough in a market that is suffering, but suffering market means job changes, and some who have been working in affected heavy industries might opt for truck driving school as a way to get ahead. Whether or not your trucks for sale get sold in a timely manner, then, has to do with environment, purpose, and appearance.

Of course, whether or not your truck sells is going to depend quite a bit on whether or not the kind of truck you’re selling is needed or in demand. While some people get into trucking because of the freedom of the road and the excitement of travel, others get involved for a very different reason; they love wheels. And loving wheels doesn’t just mean 18 wheels, but even much smaller vehicles, like motorcycles.

It turns out that many truckers are also motorcycle fans, riding to rallies, attending shows, and enjoying the road from a perspective far different than a semi-truck allows. One group, Road Dogs on Hogs, has brought the two passions together. In 2004, the group was founded by a female trucker who wanted to go to the Mecca of motorcyclists—Sturgis.

Her ambition, however, was hampered by an event that happened to her while working as a civilian in Iraq and Kuwait. She was attacked in her sleep. Because of this, she was worried about the security issues that camping at Sturgis might bring. When she raised her concern on a truckers’ radio program, other truckers who were also motorcycle lovers responded, saying that they could attend the rally together.

Now, the group has been founded and is growing. Together, the drivers with shared interests attend other motorcycle rallies across the country. And Cindy, the driver who organized the first rally, is still involved in the community, encouraging others to get involved and share their love of driving vehicles whether big or small.

While people used to get their news and information from newspapers alone, today there are almost as many ways to get your news as there are types of news. While truckers are obviously interested in the weather reports and road conditions that are featured on the news, they’re also looking to hear the national and local news that they’ve missed when they’re on the road.

Most truckers have advanced ways of getting weather and road conditions. They use their CB radios, GPS systems, cell phone applications, and laptop computers to stay on top of these conditions that impact their professions. For music, most truckers can tune to their favorite satellite radio station, put in a favorite CD, or plug in their iPods.

But when it comes to news, a few radio stations can satisfy the needs of truckers who are often on the road. Probably one of the most famous is the Midnight Trucking Radio Network. For 40 years, this radio program has been keeping truckers company on the road. They offer talk, weather, news, contests, and programs specifically targeted to the trucker on the topic of fuel economy, truck makes and models, etc.

Also producing podcasts, this radio program can be accessed on the Internet. Truckers can listen live, read headlines, and meet radio personalities on the program’s website, Midnight Trucking Radio Network. For truckers who want some relevant news on the road, this program is the way to go.

Midnight Trucking is also joined by Steve Sommer’s America’s Trucking Network and the Truckin’ Bozo. In addition, Sirius radio, a satellite radio station that has recently paired with other satellite radio provider XM, features shows for truckers, such as Freewheelin’. Thanks to the advancement of technology, truckers can use web sites such as these to stay in tune with their professional news. Although the Internet gives quite a bit of good information to truckers who are seeking it, these radio programs give a face and personality to the information as well as letting truckers debate hot topics.

In addition to Midnight Trucking, Truckers who want to hear national and local news can check out coast-to-coast AM stations, talking heads, and national news stations like Fox News and National Public Radio. As far as local radio goes, many local stations now have Internet links that allow truckers to listen online. If you have mobile Internet and a pair of speakers, this is a great way to feel like you’re at home even when you’re miles away.

I am looking for anyone who has traveled Interstate 70 in Clark County, Ohio from 1985- 2001, Who is aware of any objects being thrown from the Plattsburg Road Bridge which spans Interstate 70 in Clark County, Ohio from 1985- 2001. This bridge is near Springfield Ohio. It was one of the few bridges not having protective vandal fencing. I am Looking for anyone who may have called 911, needed to file a police report, Insurance claim, or aware of debris being throne and landing on the interstate from this bridge. The Incidents need to have occurred prior to July 9th 2001.

I was severely injured as a result of such an incident at this bridge.

American Truck Historical Society Presents Golden Achievement Award to Jerry Nerman

KANSAS CITY, MO (April, 2009) – The American Truck Historical Society, a not-for-profit truck industry organization, has awarded Jerry Nerman, co-founder of Arrow Truck Sales, Inc., their Golden Achievement Award for 2009. The award was presented to Mr. Nerman by Bill Johnson, Executive Director of ATHS, at Arrow’s corporate headquarters in Kansas City, MO.

Mr. Nerman earned the Golden Achievement based upon his nearly 60 years of service to the trucking industry. Mr. Nerman co-founded the company with the late Melvin Spitcaufsky in 1950 from a small used truck lot in downtown Kansas City, MO. Arrow was acquired by The Volvo Group in 1998.

Bill Johnson had this to say about Mr. Nerman: “He has been an active member of the American Truck Historical Society since 1980, and has been involved with the trucking industry for over 50 years.” Bill continued, “He built a legacy within the industry, developing Arrow Truck Sales into the largest used truck dealer organization in the United States. He did it based upon his philosophy of offering superior value and quality to its customers.”

I am trying to get this message out to as many truckers as possible and would like to know if you can help. I am trying to locate any drivers (company or O/O) that were fined for going over Salt Creek bridge in DuPage county Illinois by Village of Itasca or City of Wooddale from October of 2008 until now. I do not need your name or any other info other than the date they were stopped and the amount of their fine. If they wish to give more info that is fine. I am trying to get the signage on this route changed because the way it is now, too many are getting scammed on this route and being forced to pay thousands for it - 4 drivers in 4 hours on March 19, 2009!!

Now that his back is healed and he is retired from the Air Force, Lott is ready to get back on the road full-time. “Driving is my career, not just a job, and I take great pride in my work,” says Lott. “Each load delivered is important. I enjoy being a part of the many team players that get the people of America what they need and want.”

“Dennis is a genuine person, whose commitment to his country and the trucking profession is inspiring,” says country-music star Aaron Tippin, who joined the campaign this year. “This is the start of a great journey for him and I know he’ll represent the trucking industry with great pride.”

Has anyone out there been listening to Aaron Tippin's new Album "In Overdrive"? It is absolutely awesome! It is a salute to Truckers everywhere, and it really gets the foot tapping and the blood running, in fact the whole album is rockin' country and party-hard energy. You will especially get hooked again on that old classic written by Jerry Reed, "Eastbound and Down"', but then what about "The Chicken Truck",or "Six Days on the Road", or... Well, you just have to get this album and you will understand why as soon as you put it into play. It is a keeper and will soon be a favorite of Truckers everywhere as they "put the pedal to the metal" once again.

"In Overdrive" is a collection of classic trucker songs that are devoted to the hardest working professionals, the American Truckers. Most of the songs will take you back in time, but there are two new songs on the album that he co-wrote titled "Drivin' Fool" and "Drill Here, Drill Now". Aaron Tippin was once a truck driver himself and has done all sorts of truck driving so he feels he can relate to all of you out on the road in these hard times, and wants to recognize you for your hard work and lifestyle.

Aaron Tippin came out with his first debut single, "You've Got to Stand for Something" in 1990 and has been providing his fans with great country music ever since. Right after 9/11, Aaron released the song "Where the Stars and the Stripes and the Eagles Fly" in response to the terrorists attack on the U.S. He continues to share his views on life through his music.

Grandma, Barbie, Pup the Wonder Dog, Tommy Boy, JT, Neil Ray and the whole gang here at the ranch want to send out a big cowboy howdy “HEY” to everyone!

KITCHEN TABLE TALKIN’- Grandma’s on the warpath around here today, with her wooden spoon(she‘s like a ninja with that thing)….The horses like to hang out up by the house when it’s cold out, or maybe it’s because everyone likes to feed them from the porch, and, they leave little(okay okay BIG ones….) land mines everywhere so folks end up trackin’ stuff in the house….and she doesn‘t care if the world is comin‘ to an end, the kitchen floor STAY‘S CLEAN…the infamous “wooden spoon” strikes terror deep into the hearts of us mere mortals…yeah it does….

As usual there’s a lot to talk about this week, not all of it good…so grab a chair, a cup of Grandma’s famous cowboy coffee and, if ya have to, Grandpa’s bottle of Jack is under the kitchen sink….pass it here….

This last trip to MO. To pick up a very pricey go-fast boat wasn’t the best trip, mechanically, I’ve ever had…a lot of stuff started goin’ wrong with the truck I was using, but Thank God I was able to get the boat close enough to home base so Wheels could send Justin up to get me and the boat….high stress road burn…feelin’ it…..another day at the office…just doin’ my job keemosabbee….

JT’s got a fence post up his keester over this business goin’ on in Virginia. I personally NEVER like to stop at rest areas because I like to one-stop shop when I have to take a break or whatever, but for the drivers who need to get off the road this “shakedown” seems way too far off the reservation, even for law enforcement. True it’s been an issue for awhile, like the idling thing, but lately it seems like drivers who need to pull over are doin’ somethin’ wrong! And, the damn ticket is REALLY expensive! Freight hauling is a fact of life in this country. Maybe the state of Virginia needs to remember that… I wonder if federal law or state law takes precedence..hmmmm..Do we break federal law for a petty state law?…..what’cha think truckstar?

TRUCKSTAR TECH- Okay I finally did it…I got a laptop, the HP6735b, a custom model(Ihad a bunch of stuff added, including the fastest hard drive avail., and HD screen) kind of a little beast at 4g of ram, I’ll upgrade to 8 soon…with the new built in mobile web access - GOBI. I’ll write more on it later, since I haven’t tweaked it yet and deleted the bloatware in it, or downloaded the new software I need, either.

If you’re thinking “netbook”, uhhh, I would really really shop it….write down the list of what you need AND what you’ll be doing with it….you may just find yourself in the laptop class, not netbook.

Sony Vaio P Series is still one of the best netbooks in my opinion but they’re not cheap.

Smartphones…well everyone and their brother is comin’ out with one, but the market is quickly declining because of the netbooks…so…my advice to you is to shop for an economy full size laptop. A 14” to 15” model is small enough. The tech gurus, like Warren Whitlock (author of “Twitter Revolution“) I keep in touch with are all switching from smartphones to netbooks, even for phone calls and texting. Warren tells me he got this model - (Acer Aspire One - AOD 150-1577 10.1 inch Netbook) I would take this as a strong endorsement if your looking for a good unit, long battery life.

Truckers? Taxes

When you’re a trucker, computing taxes isn’t quite as easy as it would be if you were an employee at a factory. Instead, you own your own business, so your filing becomes more complex, even though it might end up saving you money in the long run. Even if you’re not an owner/operator, you’re most likely viewed as an independent contractor, so filing is still tricky. If you have a good accountant who knows the ins and outs of deductions, you can often end up keeping more of your hard earned cash than many.

While deductions for tools and maintenance on your truck are easy to remember, you can actually claim deductions for almost anything that’s involved with running your business. These include everything from the money it costs you to access the Internet on the road to using your cell phone for business to ATM fees and physicals that your employer requires. These and a longer list of deductions is available at The Truckers Report, where truckers can view a whole host of deductions that might end up saving them more of their money in the long run.

Although a good accountant can find these deductions and more, it is important to make sure that you don’t claim bogus deductions. This can quickly lead to an audit, a fine, and even jail time, if you did so willingly. Of course, most truckers don’t mean to make phony deductions, but when truckers and their accountants make these kind of mistakes, it can end up costing time and money, as well as creating a toll on you mentally, emotionally, and physically. To avoid these problems, make sure you don’t claim deductions for expenses that were already reimbursed or items and services that you may have used while on the road, but could easily be adapted for personal use, such as clothing and home phone lines. The Truckers Report contains a longer list of deduction faux pas for drivers.

Because you’re a trucker, you have an advantage over many, since quite a few of your everyday expenses can be deducted from your taxes. If you’re applying for a home mortgage or some other line of credit that requires you to prove income, however, you should be aware that these deductions change the amount of your income, sometimes lowering it to a standard that your financial needs provider finds unacceptable.

Fastest Diesel Truck

Each day, you probably live in fear of getting a speeding ticket, which can harm your reputation with your employer, your customers, your insurance company, and the law, but when you get a speeding ticket, it’s probably just from going a few miles over the speeding limit.

Imagine if you were the driver of the Phoenix, the fastest diesel truck on land. This sea foam green semi-truck leaves a trail of exhaust behinds it as it raced down the track at Speedweek, achieving a record 272 miles per hour.

But this groundbreaker is actually a very old truck, a 1943 international model. If you had seen it in the junkyard, you wouldn’t have thought it much. But after Carl Heal and R.B. Slagle started working on it in 1987, it was never the same. After the installation of a new engine and some aerodynamic styling, it became the world’s fastest land diesel vehicle.

In its lifetime, the Phoenix has accomplished some amazing feats, making the journey to refurbish it worthwhile. While the Phoenix was clearly a project truck, and the two friends who worked on it did so for fun and personal development, this world’s fastest diesel truck speaks to the power of used vehicles. Truckers that like to experiment the way that Carl and R.B. did should check out local junkyards, where they might find gems hidden beneath layers of rust.

Although work on the Phoenix stopped in 2003 after Carl died prematurely, the truck will always be known as the old timer who managed to accomplish much. In addition, the truck will probably have the name as the fastest for some time.

KITCHEN TABLE TALKIN'- Ahhhh yes! The life of a writer. My name is Daniel, I've become a Twitter addict. Seriously though it's a fun social site and I've met a lot of cool people there, like Trucker Desiree, a_smart_union, TS_Elliot and many others(you know who you are...). You'll find people you have a lot in common with, and, it's hard to describe the experience so just go there, you'll see.

I have to laugh(or not...) at myself. I'm a writer but the one thing it seems I have the least amount of time to do - is - write. There's maintaining my 2 blogsites(soon, a third), my web radio station, my work life( I still haul race boats and sport yachts), and my social networking, then there's networking my social networking and networking the results of that....uhhh...I think I got that straight...and I have security issues to stay on top of too, always, and I try to answer several hundred e-mails a day and the e-mail answers from those answers too...then make dinner...I think I got some sleep last week, I'm not sure...just call me Zombie Boy....

I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining or whining, I'm not, it's all good!

Before I go any further I want to take a moment to THANK everyone who asked about Barbie's health. The cancer on her arm is still there, her insurance at her work changed recently so she's jumping hoops to find a new doctor to go to for it(and get her lengthy records), since her old doctors don't take her new and NOT improved health insurance. When someone has a life threatening condition - you would think the medical community would be able to act and react quicker! Her body is wearing down, and so, the migraines are back....but it's ALL in God's hands...prayin' for a miracle....

Question: Why truckstars, do we complain about American companies going offshore or over borders to manufacture, co's firing or laying off(firing) thousands of people, usually for profit margin reasons, THEN we continue to buy products from these same companies??? On my street here in the Ft. Lauderdale area there are several of us who have little or no work. I hear every day of family or extended family members who are facing serious financial issues. Yet, the cars, clothes, AND food(that's right I said food...peaches from Peru anyone?) and electronics we buy everyday are being made somewhere else by companies that used to manufacture here in the U.S., and still, like blind lemmings we buy and buy and buy....meanwhile, standing on the sidelines has been a series of impotent political "administrations"(whatever that means...) that have, in fact, aided and abetted the economic destruction of this country!(that's us, truckstars...) Now, is it REALLY an issue of survival, or just greed and profitability for companies that move manufacturing elsewhere? The business experts(the ones who aren't bought and paid for with lobbyist money, that is...) claim it's purely profit motives, that companies could survive in the eco climate here in this country IF the American people weren't always looking for the cheapest price on everything. We have to understand that we're investing in ourselves, our families, our neighbors....OUR FUTURES.... remember that next time you buy something that says "Made in China", or where-ever, on the bottom of the package(and hopefully the fruits, vegetables and toys won't poison yor kids)...and your neighbor loses his car and house....

Me? I look for 2 things on a package. 1.) ingredients 2.) where it's made. No I'm not an idiot, I don't just look to pay more for stuff, but what I'm getting at here is the idea that ,things made or produced here will probably cost more, sometimes a lot or a little, but just keep in mind this - Look around at the situation in the country right now, do a little history homework. What you'll find is that the undermining of this economy began a long time ago, not 3 or 4 years ago, but, a long time ago. Do we really want to support a company that turns it's back on it's own customers here in the U.S. while exploiting already oppressed working people in other countries? (It's "just business" the business types say...is it really? That's what the sign hanging on the gates of hell says too) People, that the watchdog groups say, that STILL CAN'T FEED THEIR KIDS EITHER...when I put my hand over my heart and I recite the pledge of allegience - I cry now....Are we a nation under God? IN-divisible? WITH -liberty and justice for all? No, not when greed, corruption, gambling and pornagraphy seem to be ruling the day, and the true American ideal has faded into history and become a corporate sales pitch slogan....We should be asking for, hell, DEMANDING American made products! Let's put ourselves back to work, the governments not going to....What'cha think truckstar?

THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT- Please Please read the labels on the foods you buy! Try to learn which of the products you typically buy in the store have the least and lowest amount of chemicals with 0 trans fats. I know, I know it's next to impossible but really soon you'll know which ones to grab when you run in while your parked at the gas pumps, or with the family at the grocery store. We're in "damage control" mode here people! 3 things to watch for 1.) sodium 2.)trans fats 3.)food coloring. Lots of restaurants are now using 0 trans fats cooking and frying oils, even the fast food evil empires like McDonald's......and get a bottle of "whole food organic" vitamins....

TRUCKSTAR TECH- I know I promised a review of APU's and smartphones, but a new wave of technology hit this past week in both areas so, this week's is going to be general in nature. I'll have to break up the reviews week by week too. The Blackberry is still King of the hill in the smartphone dept., or so the tech mags say, however several other models, depending on your carrier, are making a good showing. The iPhone, the Google Android, and the new LG and Microsoft smartphones are players in the game. Really, it's your network speed that matters, not so much the phone itself, they all have the same app's and functions and we all do pretty much the same things with em' so....I'm tellin' ya, watch for Sprint to make a huge comeback, I really believe in the new CEO Dan Hesse at Sprint and my new Sony Vaio P series laptop will prob. have a SPrint connection, using the built in Gobi.

I like the package HP, AT&T and Gobi have put together for you current and future laptop users, and for me, a laptop I can make calls on while doing everything else to is the way to go if I have to choose between a phone and a laptop. I use my SKYPE phone number every day through my computer, for $2.95 a month I get unlimited to Canada and the U.S. , for $9.95 a month you could have unlimited global...so...check the link above, here on my blogsite. I have just about switched over from my cell phone, I never use it anymore....2 media bills? I don't think so....
