I recently announced a new reading challenge which I am co-hosting with Kate from Read 2 Review. The Stephen King Challenge is a perpetual reading challenge and will start on February 1, 2012. To encourage regular reading of the books (because, let's face it, we all tend to procrastinate when there is no eminent deadline), there will be periodic mini-challenges with prizes and we will have occasional read-a-longs. Of course, I will be participating, as well as Kate, but we will be excluded from winning any prizes, of course. Details/Rules (from Amber):
The challenge runs from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2012.

All book formats are allowed for this challenge as long as they have an ISBN number or the equivalent. Both fiction and non-fiction are allowed as well. Re-reads ARE allowed but your review must be a new one.

All the books read for this challenge must be Tudor related. Books that feature any Tudor from Henry VII to Elizabeth I and any spouses, lovers, close family members, or themes count. There are a lot out there, so no worries!

Each month, I will create a new post dedicated to the challenge where you can link your Tudor reviews for that particular month. You do not need a blog to participate! Posting on Goodreads or wherever you post your reviews is fine.

There is no need to list the books you will read for this challenge in advance. Feel free to list them as you go. Join the challenge at any time before 31 December 2012. Crossovers from other reading challenges do count.

How do I know if it's "Twisted?" I'll let you decide. Use your own judgement and reading experience, but most contain common elements (not limited to the ones listed below). I'm sure I haven't thought of them all - if it's weird, it's twisted and counts. Stop fretting, just read.

Absurd - Focuses on the experiences of characters in a situation where they cannot find any inherent purpose in life, most often represented by ultimately meaningless actions and events. Common elements are satire, dark humor,incongruity, abasement of reason and philosophy.
Dark comedy - A comedy having gloomy or disturbing elements, especially one in which a character suffers an irreparable loss. A comedy characterized by morbid or grimly satiric humor.
Satire When vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon. A common feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm, but also parody, burlesque, exaggeration; juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are frequently used.
Bizarro Just what it sounds like ‘weird.’ May employ elements of surrealism, avant-garde, science fiction, fantasy, gore, humor, and sometimes borderlines on pornographic. Select books as you go. If you prefer to set a TBR list that is perfectly find, feel free to change or add at anytime! The books you read can crossover into other challenges. Multi-tasking is fun.

Begins January 1, 2012 but you can join at anytime. All books read in 2012 count towards the challenge regardless of when you sign up.

Audiobooks do not count - that's listening, not reading. All other formats, accepted.

Track your own progress. Update and post at your convenience. An end of the year wrap-up post is encouraged, but not required. Post as often as you like and please, if you liked the book, don't forget to write a review (amazon, B&N, Goodreads ect.) - again, not required, but greatly appreciated. Trust me, the authors will love you for it.

I had to sign up for this challenge. 1) because Charlie rocks and 2) I like bizarre books as much as the next guy...girl...whatever! I'm going for the 'I Scare Small Children" 1-12 level. I'm including Charlie's book, The Secret of a Spicy Jalapeno, as I still owe her a review (stupid backlog!) and I really want to read it besides! I'm also going to read at least one Chuck Palahniuk book, probably Fight Club, one I've been wanting to read for years. Incidentally, all books will come from my own shelves. I have 2000+ fiction books languishing away (and a fair share of twisted tales) and it's time to get to them. Another book I'll include, which will cross over with a few other challenges is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. We'll see where else the road takes me!

2012 A-Z Mystery Author Challenge

My purpose of creating this challenge was to read more of one of my favorite genres while also discovering new authors. Because I did not "complete" any part of the challenge last year as I outlined in the rules, I've decided to change it this year.

This year I am leaving it opened for you, dear participants, to create your own levels. Read all "A" authors. Read "A-G" authors. Read "M-Z" Authors. Or continue from last year and try to complete more letters and get the whole alphabet.

RULES:

Challenge runs from January 1 - December 31, 2012. Sign up ends February 1, 2012.
Each letter represents the last name of the mystery author. G= for Sue Grafton.
You decide your level.
Mystery genre can include Cozy, Suspense, Thriller, or Noir. All Adult novels please.
Sign up on Mr. Linky.
Write a post about this challenge and what letters you want to read. You can list the authors you choose or do it as you go.

I failed miserably at this challenge last year. Frankly, I really slacked on keeping track so not even sure if I completed any of the letters at all. So this year I'm starting fresh. I'm so glad that Michelle is letting us decide our own level. Michelles rock, don't they?! ;O) Since it looks like she is going to continue this challenge from year to year, I've devised my own system for completing the challenge. I've split the alphabet up by odd and even numbers. Like this:

Odd letters: A-C-E-G-I-K-M-O-Q-S-U-W-Y

Even letters: B-D-F-H-J-L-N-P-R-T-V-X

Then I'm going to take half of one set of letters each year. Y and Z will be bonus letters, if I happen to find a qualifying book by an author with a Y or Z name. This year, I'm going with even letters B-D-F-H-J-L. I chose these letters because I have books on my shelves that I've been wanting to get to for some time which are by author's names starting with these letters. Here's my list (I reserve the right to change my mind at any time regarding book selection):

For this year’s reading challenge I thought we’d have a little fun with colors. Each month has been assigned a color (along with some common alternate words to add variety). You just have to find a book with that color in the title. That’s it! As you read, come post the title and author of the book for that month below. At the end of the year… anyone who has post EACH MONTH, and completed ALL COLORS, will receive a handmade (by me) bracelet with a bead for each color, and a book charm to finish it off. I’m working on a grand prize (one random winner, only) basket of lovely, color themed books as well, but that will be a WIP during the year. In order to qualify for the bracelet, or be entered into the grand prize drawing for the basket, you MUST post each month with your title/author. If you post any reviews about the books you’ve read for this challenge, please post the link in your comment and I’ll send it out on Books Make Me Happy Twitter and Facebook streams. *All books must be at least 200 pages, or the ebook equivalent.*

Colors for each month are:
January – Red (burgundy, claret, crimson, fuschia, garnet, magenta, maroon, ruby, scarlet, rose, cherry)

If you think you’ll have trouble finding books with the correct colors… check places like GoodReads.com and Google Books. Just search for the color and see what pops up!! (If you find a book with a color-type word you want to use, but it’s not on the list, email me or @ me on twitter to check.) Hopefully this will encourage all of us to look outside of our “tried and true” and find some fantastic new books. I’ll be posting my book/author each month below, can’t wait to see what YOU all find!!

The Challenge: Read any non-fiction book(s), adult or young adult. That's it. You can choose anything. Poetry? Yes. Memoirs? Yes. History? Yes. Travel? Yes. You get the idea? Absolutely anything that is classified as non-fiction counts for this challenge.

2. Choose one of the following options to complete the challenge:

Chunkster Reading Challenge

Definition of a chunkster:
A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature, whether non-fiction or fiction. A chunkster should be a challenge.

If you read books in large print, your books will need to be 525 pages or more. The average large type book is 10-15% larger or more so it’s a fair estimate.

The rules:

No audio books. (There are exceptions to this rule.)
No e-books allowed. This was discussed in much detail in the 2011 challenge. The short version: a chunkster isn’t a challenge if you’re reading it on an e-reader. (There are exceptions to this rule.)
This year for the first time, essay, poetry, and short story collections will be allowed. Collections have to be read in their entirety to count. If you’ve needed a reason to finally pick up your copy of The Collected Works Of ____ now is the time.
Books may crossover with other challenges.
Anyone may join. (If you don’t have a blog, just leave a comment on this post with your challenge level and your progress throughout the challenge.)
You don’t need to list your books ahead of time.
Once you’ve picked a level, that’s it. You’re committed to it!

You must pick a level of participation:

The Chubby Chunkster – this option is for the readers who want to dabble in large tomes, but really doesn't want to commit to much more than that. FOUR Chunksters is all you need to finish this challenge.
The Plump Primer - this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to SIX Chunksters over the next twelve months.
Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? - this option is for the reader who can't resist bigger and bigger books and wants to commit to SIX Chunksters from the following categories: 2 books which are between 450 - 550 pages in length; 2 books which are 551 - 750 pages in length; 2 books which are GREATER than 750 pages in length (for ideas, please refer to the book suggestions page for some books which fit into these categories).
Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to EIGHT or more Chunksters of which three tomes MUST be 750 pages or more. You know you want to.....go on and give in to your cravings.

I actually completed this challenge last year (and one month early!). I was going to choose the 'butt look big' level again, but you know what? I'm going for Mor-book-ly Obese! Bring on the calorie laden Chunksters...LOL!

The Rules:

Challenge will run January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Participants can join anytime throughout the challenge.
Create an intro post, linking back to this post.
Sign up with the MckLinky below. Please link to your challenge intro post, not your blog home page.
Chose your own books from the list. You can decide to read books only on the Top 25 list or from the entire recommendation list. You do not have to make a list of books before the challenge begins.
All forms of books acceptable (audiobooks, eBooks, etc.)
Rereads do not count towards the completion of the challenge. The challenge is about discovering books that are new to you.
You don't need a blog to participate.
Reviews, while always appreciated, are not mandatory.

This is the third year I have signed up for this challenge. I'm hoping the third time is the charm
and that I actually complete it this year.

Dollycas's Just for Fun challenge allows one cross over with another challenge and I'm going to do this one because there are so many on the list that I've been wanting to read and that have been languishing on my bookshelves for a while now. So I will choose all or most of my Just for Fun books from the BBRC list. I'm going for Level III and will read 15 books from the entire list.

January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012As bloggers we are all on timetables to read books, get reviews posted, host giveaways, etc. But we also travel around to other blogs and see books we would just like to read because of their recommendation or the cover or title catches our interest. The Meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey “It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?” adds more books to my Wish List and To-Be-Read pile every week. As followers you get our recommendations, win books from us, pick up books at the library or buy them at a store. But our lives are so busy these books sometimes sit in our To-Be-Read piles for months or even years.

This is the second year I am hosting this challenge to encourage you to read some of those books. 12 books in 12 months.
This year this challenge will be set up as a group on Good Reads. If you are not a member it is very easy to join. There are many benefits other than this challenge, you can keep track of the books you read and get great recommendations from other members too. Just go here http://www.goodreads.com/ to sign up.

I hope you will write a post telling about your involvement in the challenge and invite you followers to join and participate! Bloggers if you feel compelled to review the book you can but it is not required. You may want to list what books you have read under the button on your blog.

All book formats are allowed, printed, audio, e-book.
These books can be counted in your total books read for the year challenge and to one other challenge such as a Where Are You Reading Challenge but try not to cross them over to many other challenges as they really are to be read...JUST FOR FUN!

Everyone that completes the Challenge, 12 books in 12 months will be entered in a drawing for a $25 dollar Amazon.com Gift Certificate or $25 at The Book Depository for International Participants.
Last year I really hampered myself by using the books I read JUST FOR FUN as a prize. I found myself putting so much thought into my choices like: Is it the first in a series?, Will other people like this?, that I found I wasn’t reading the books I really wanted to read JUST FOR FUN, like some of my favorite series books that I didn’t want to part with. So my books will not be a prize in 2012. Instead I will add another $10 Gift Certificate from Amazon.com or The Book Depository as a 2nd prize. More prizes may be added depending on the number of participants.

You Must Read One Book For Fun Each Month.
You can only add one book to your list per month.

Truth in Fiction Challenge

Challenge runs from 01/01/12 - 12/31/2012

Goal: read a specified number of book pairs that are comprised of one fiction book and one related non-fiction book. Think outside of the box; the non-fiction book could also be journals, letters, memoirs, etc.... The pairs needn't be exact matches, although there should be an easily detectable common thread. Overlapping with other challenges is fine.

The catch: Instead of individual reviews, after each book pair write a joint review. For example, if I read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and then The Journals of Sylvia Plath then my review post will be focused on both books.

Levels:
Freshman: 1 pair
Sophomore: 2 pairs
Junior: 3 pairs
Senior: 4 pairs
Masters: 5 pairs
PhD: 6 pairs
Professor: 7 pairs

I'm going to start off committing to Freshman: 1 pair, but I may move up higher. Not sure if that's allowed or not, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it...unless my hand is slapped. ;O)

European Reading Challenge 2012

The gist: The idea is to read books by European authors or books set in European countries (no matter where the author comes from). The books can be anything – novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, or any other genre. You can participate at different levels, but each book must be by a different author and set in a different country – it's supposed to be a tour.

What counts as "Europe"? For this challenge, we will use the list of 50 sovereign states that fall (at least partially) within the geographic territory of the continent of Europe and/or enjoy membership in international European organizations such as the Council of Europe. This list includes the obvious (Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy), the really huge Russia, the tiny Vatican City, and the mixed bag of Baltic, Balkan, and former Soviet states.

Here is the list, in alphabetical order: Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Vatican City.

LEVELS OF PARTICIPATION

Five Star (Deluxe Entourage): Read at least five books by different European authors or books set in different European countries.
Four Star (Honeymooner): Read four qualifying books.

Three Star (Business Traveler): Read three qualifying books.
Two Star (Adventurer): Read two qualifying books.
One Star (Pensione Weekender): Read just one qualifying book.

Alternate Arrangements

Agritourisimo: For foodie readers – read a selected number (your choice) of food-related books written by European authors or about European food, cooking, restaurants, culinary traditions, farming, winemaking, etc. Again, each book must be by a different author and set in a different country.

Youth Hostel: For participants under 18 only – read a selected number of books (your choice), by European authors or set in a country of Europe. (Adults reading YA books still participate as adults, not in this sub-category).

Culture Vulture: For those obsessed with prize-winners – read a selected number of books (your choice) that won a major literary prize in its original country. Any of the following literary prizes would count, but there may be others: Anton Wildgans (Austria), Magnesia Litera (Czech Republic), Finlandia (Finland), Le Grand Prix du Roman (France), German Book Prize (Germany), Balint Balassi Memorial Sword (Hungary), Icelandic Literary Prize (Iceland), Bagutta (Italy), Batty Weber (Luxembourg), Norwegian Critics (Norway), NIKE (Poland), Camões (Portugal), Russian Booker (Russia), Prešeren (Slovakia), Premio Planeta de Novela (Spain), August (Sweden), Swiss Book Prize (Switzerland), Sedat Simavi (Turkey), Shevchenko National (Ukraine), Booker (United Kingdom).

Read all books between January 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013. I like having 13 months so there is extra time to finish after the holidays.
You do not have to commit to your choices now; you can change your mind about books at any time.
Overlap with other challenges is allowed -- and encouraged! The Venice in February Challenge is just one idea. Others? Please leave links in comments and I will add them.
Re-reads count. Audiobooks count. E-books count. Self-published books count.
As you progress, please let us know by leaving comments with links to progress reports and reviews. Reviews are not necessary, unless you are going for one of the prizes, in which case only books reviewed count. If you do not have a blog, put your reviews or reports in a comment on this post.

I'm not sure which level to sign up for because I'm not sure if we can move up and down the levels so I'm going to go with the Five Star level (5 books) just because I already read a lot of books set in European countries anyway. The countries I'm thinking of including are France, Italy, Ireland, Sweden, and United Kingdom. However, I reserve the right to change them and I may even read more than five.

I read 58 books in 2011...only 8 more than 2010. I'm still determined to hit 100 this year so my level is 'I'm on Fire!'--16+ more than I read last year. I have to read 42 more books than last year. Can I do it? Well, I'm going to give it the ole college try! I'll re-evaluate in the Spring and see if I need to adjust my level

--Just pick up 1 book per year.
--If you already did the 1st five years in 2011, I encourage you to cover the next 5 years. And if you are more ambitious, I prepared 4 levels for you:

- 10 years = Pre-Teen
- 15 years or more = YA

I got this book for Christmas a couple years ago and am slowly making my way through the list. I have discovered some amazing books and writers. I don’t expect to ever read all of the books – but I do want to make a dent in the list and want to open it up for other to join me! The list is so great because it has a huge variety! There are classics that you may have read in school, but there are also some great books we have all missed and some fantastic world literature.

The challenge is simple – read some books from the list! If you don’t own the actual book, you can find a simple list online. For the most basic, check out the Listology list. There are spreadsheets outs there that you can look at too that are more complex.

Since this year is an Olympics year, I thought the structure would change…so here are the levels this year!

Levels:

Got to trials: 5 books from the list
Made the Olympic team: 6-10 books from the list
Bronze medal: 11-15 books from the list
Silver Medal: 16-20 books from the list:
Gold Medal: 21+ books from the list

Rules:

Challenge runs January 1 2012 – December 31 2012.
You don’t have to make a list beforehand.
You DO need to choose your level at the beginning so you have a chance to win the prize!
You can use any version of the list, not just the current, since they update it every couple years. I figure, once a book is on the list, it is always on the list!

Challenge runs from January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2012. You may sign up to participate at any point between these dates.
Any genre counts as long as it is related to fairytale, folklore, or mythology in some way. If you’re not sure if it counts – as long as you can make a case for why it should, then it does!
You can re-read books for this challenge as long as the reviews you link are written during 2012, and the challenge can also overlap other challenges.
Whatever you read must either be a version of a fairytale or myth, or contain fairytale or mythological characters, settings, or sequence of events.

You can sign up for any level, and choose to read either purely the categories listed below, or to participate in the Mix n Match category, or the Adaptation Amalgamation category, or all of them if you're that brave!

Categories:

Twisted Fairytales – retellings or modern interpretations of fairytales or myths. For inspiration, look here.
Classics – Myth and fairytale from the classics genre (e.g. Homer, Grimm, Virgil, Hans Christian Andersen)
Graphics – Graphic novels and comics based around or containing elements of mythology and fairytale. Examples include Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series and Bill Willingham’s Fables series among others. For a list that barely scrapes the surface, go here.
Poetry & Drama – We’ve put this in because we’re sure there must be some. I've managed to find some, but if you know of any others please let us know!
Non- Fiction – Anything about myth, fairytale, folklore or fantasy in general that doesn’t belong to the fictional genre.

Extra Categories:

Adaptation Amalgamation – Watch a film and read the book it is based on. This category can incorporate as many other categories as you like (i.e all your films do not have to be based on graphic novels, but some can be, and some twisted fairytale, some non-fiction etc)
Mix n Match – Exactly what it says. Sign up for a level and pick that number of books from any or all of the other categories.

You can sign up to participate at any time from the moment this is posted until the end of 2012, it's your set of resolutions, so have fun with it :D
Challenge: think up your bookish list of resolutions for 2012, it can be anything related to bookish things (including completing other Challenges you're participating in as long as they're bookish-related)

Challenge runs from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.

My goals for the challenge:

catch up on backlist review books in the first two months (maybe three) of 2012
cut back on review requests, except book tours with tour hosts I have a relationship with
complete all reading challenges (especially The Book Vixen's Outdo Yourself Challenge, therefore reading more books in 2012...I'm aiming for 100...again!)
read more non-fiction
most of the books read in 2012 should be from my own shelves with the exception of review books

That's all I can think of right now!
