By Christine Fonner | December 4, 2013

My dad had this habit of calling me Imelda Marcos growing up. I had a thing for shoes. And handbags. And cute jackets. I converted a bedroom into a big closet and I filled it up.

After four years of living to work rather than working to live, I had a revolutionary moment: I started purging all of my stuff. I felt trapped and weighed down. It was time to re-prioritize. Over the last three years, I have gone through several phases of becoming a “minimalist.” There is no proper way of getting this done. There is no secret formula that makes it really easy to get rid of all of your “stuff.” It’s a process that takes time to sort out and to begin minimizing your inventory and then looking at material possessions differently.

If you are looking to live out of a few bags, one room, or your car, this Guide may prove to be helpful.

This is my How-To Guide to Becoming a Minimalist.

Phase 1: The Initial Purge

I originally wrote about “How I Became a Minimalist” in November, 2011. At the time, I thought I was really becoming a minimalist. Looking back, I wasn’t a minimalist. I had just REDUCED the amount of stuff I had. This is now referred to as “The Initial Purge.”

Step 1: Downsize. In order for me to take the first step seriously, I actually got rid of my house. I know this might be drastic. It’s not necessary but it definitely helps. If this isn’t practical, then I suggest setting up “The Rule.”

Step 2: Establish “The Rule.” If it hasn’t been used or worn in —– months, then it goes in the pile. It’s important not to make exceptions unless it’s a family heirloom or something you aren’t really ready to part with yet. Don’t worry, you’ll part with it at some point.

Step 3: Create “Sell” and “Give Away” Piles. One of the most rewarding things about initially getting rid of your stuff is the money you can make from it. This provides you with some positive incentive to keep getting rid of stuff. Sell it, bank it, and enjoy the freedom of less stuff.

Step 4: Become an Expert on eBay and Craigslist. This may be a hard step because there is a lull in the action. Your perfectly good stuff now has to SIT THERE while it waits to be purchased by some other pack rat. You’ll be tempted to pull something out of the pile. You’ll be discouraged by the mess that sits in the corner. Hang tight. Once the stuff sells (or doesn’t) you get to take a nice healthy trip to Goodwill.

Step 5: Salvation Army Truck Day. So, that lava lamp your ex-girlfriend gave you for Christmas five years ago didn’t sell. Neither did your nun-chucks and samurai sword. It’s time to donate. Call up your local Salvation Army and help them help people in need. They will come to your house with a big truck and pick up all the furniture, clothing, and odd-ball items you don’t want and they will do it for FREE.

Congratulations. You have completed Phase 1!

Phase 2: The Real Purge

So, you are proud of getting rid of that initial pile of your worldly possessions. You leave thinking, “That wasn’t so hard!” and you are ready for Phase 2. This is where the releasing of your possessions becomes hard. Sentiment may get in the way. “Man, I love that worn in Black Flag shirt…” and when the “Well, I might use that third flashlight I found in the closet sometime soon…” kicks in.

Step 1: Change “The Rule.” Cut your rule in half. That’s right. Cut it in half. If your rule was, “I haven’t worn or used this in one year…” it’s now 6 months. If it was 6 months, it’s now 3.

Step 2: Start with the Clothes. We all have way too many clothes. Especially shirts. Be systematic and start with the drawers – socks, t-shirts, pajama bottoms. If it hasn’t been used according to your new rule, put it in the “Give Away” or “Sell” pile. Do the same for the closet. Start with shirts, then pants, then dresses (if you are into that kind of thing).

Step 3: The House Tour. Now it’s time to move beyond your clothes. Walk around your house and pick items that you are “ready” to get rid of. Paintings, books, dishes, DVDs, chachkies. The Rule applies to everything. If you aren’t ready to part with something yet, that’s okay…for now. Put it down and move on to find something else.

Step 4: Another Round of eBay and Craigslist. You are now, by all means, becoming an expert on these two sites. You may have even thrown Pennysaver into the mix. You are starting to get a surge of excitement every time you look at your PayPal balance.

Step 5: The Repeater. You are really proud of all that hard work! You have a big pile of stuff! You are selling like no other and dropping bags off at Goodwill to the point you are on a first-name basis with the collector. No. It’s not enough! You aren’t done yet, my friend. Phase 2 isn’t over. Are you SURE you need that piggy bank from grandma? Do you really need a set of 12 wine glasses? Repeat Steps 1-4.

Congratulations. You have completed Phase 2!

Phase 3: You Are Legit

Step 1: Choosing Your Storage Method. It’s time to become mobile. Your house is no longer your home. Where your possessions reside is where you reside. You are ready to hit the road, sleep on a buddy’s couch, or take a long and much needed sabbatical. It’s time to pick how you are going to carry your belongings with you. Initially, I chose two Action Packers, three 90 liter Patagonia Black Hole travel duffel bags, and two Arcyterx 40 liter Silo backpacks.

Step 2: Pack It Up, Pack It In. It is time to organize your personal possessions by type or season. The Action Packers are used for hard goods: books, important papers, photos, mementos, shoes, and oddball items (I couldn’t let go of that fishing reel from grandpa). The Patagonia bags are used for seasonal items and camping gear: Winter, Summer, Camping/Outdoor. Being type A, I color coded these (orange – summer, blue – winter, and black – outdoors) and then wrote the type using Vis-a-Vis pens on the outside of the bag. The Arcteryx backpacks are used for your wardrobe.

Step 3: The Leftovers. Inevitably, you are going to have some random leftovers that just don’t fit into this new method of storage. That’s okay. You have now chosen your “essentials” that fit into your “If shit hits the fan and I gotta run, I am grabbing my bags and running.” You’ve done a pretty dang good job of pairing your shit down. To fix this problem of leftovers, repeat Step 5, Phase 2 repeatedly until everything fits.

Step 4: 50 Shades of Bathroom Products (Usually Applies to Girls Only). Now, if you are a girl, you have more than likely excluded bathroom products. These are usually in tubs, bins, and boxes already so in your mind, it’s already packed up and packed in. These are usually also considered essentials. How could I possibly get ready without three moisturizers, two types of chapsticks, four hair products, and two hair brushes? Impossible! Well, it is possible. Buy smart. Using quality products means you can use less product. To work this whole bathroom thing out, I chose one plastic drawer bin for medicine, backup products, and general items. I then re-purposed two makeup travel bags: one for makeup and the other for my daily items (moisturizer, cover up, chapstick, lip gloss, travel hair brush, tweezers, etc.).

Step 5: Survival for Two Weeks. Everything is organized. You are mobile and you have gotten rid of 75% of your possessions. Now it is time to put it all to the test. Pick items that you will need for the next two weeks. Clothing, toiletries, books, water bottle, etc. Whatever you think you are going to need for two weeks, pack it into those Arcteryx bags. This is another opportunity to do another “purge.” Now that you have your daily essentials picked out, pack up your boxes and bags and put them in your closet, pack it into your car, or just generally put it away so you can’t see or use them.

Bonus Step: Living in Survival Mode. Test out your minimalist status. Try to stick to the items in your Survival Pack for two weeks. Continue to re-think items in your inventory. Is there anything else that you can get rid of? Anything else you don’t need anymore?

Congratulations! You have completed Phase 3 and are now a Bonefied Minimalist!

Phase 4: Reflection and Maintenance

*This process began for me in 2011. I am constantly revisiting the Phases and Steps to try and maintain a level of minimal possessions. Being in one spot for an extended period of time, I think it’s in our nature to collect and nest. Over three years, I have completed the three phases and have now paired down my possessions so they fit into the back of a Subaru and I can hit the road. I can pack up all of my things in 45 minutes flat.

*The most important gain out of the process of becoming a minimalist is the new way you start looking at purchasing items. My new motto is, “If I can’t use it more than three ways, I don’t need it.” Everything I own, I use every day. Usually, in multiple ways. Before I buy something new, I think about the depth of need, the ways I could use it, and if it fits into my storage set up.

*Another really important view I started understanding on a deeper level was the amount of waste and unnecessary crap we manufacture, distribute, and waste money on. I also started to existentially think about how this impacts the world, environment, and my quality of life. Yes, I guess you could say that becoming a minimalist can bring out the hippie in you.

*To be a true minimalist, you have to purge and then maintain. Look at your purchases constantly with a critical eye and only buy to replace what you use or to fill a gap in your daily routine necessities.

Today is the big day. Well, not for me. For me, it’s just another gorgeous morning in South Africa. I woke up thinking about the full breakfast buffet waiting for me in the lobby of our hotel, Bonne Esperance.

I wasn’t thinking about the 27 kilometers of racing out of a true starting gate that ends on a mountain top. I wasn’t thinking about the heat of the sun or the 900 meters of climbing. I was thinking about eggs. Sausage. Fruit. Coffee.

Josh was up and already in the shower. Ugh. Reality is setting in. It’s time to start packing to head to Meerendel Wine Estate. We opted for an economy rental. Which left little space for little me in the backseat of the car.

Today is the Prologue of the Absa Cape Epic and Josh woke up very quiet this morning. We have spent eight months, countless hours, and a lot of energy for Josh and Jackie to be here today. So have a lot of other people. Sponsors, friends, and family have all been supporting Josh and Jackie through the entire process. The excitement has now reached a whole new (epic) level.

March 22, 2012

I woke in the morning giddy with excitement. This was the day I get to explore Cape Town, South Africa. The weather was flawless (typical of South Africa!) and we hopped in the car for a quick drive from Stellenbosch to Cape Town. Today marked the day when the trip would change – we would no longer be tourists riding bikes in this gorgeous part of the world. Josh and Jackie were mentally preparing for the Absa Cape Epic and I was becoming nervous about my role in the whole bit (camping, washing, organizing, packing…). I wasn’t sure what to expect and from this point forward I felt a little bit like an outsider to the whole experience.

I followed behind Josh and Jackie, snapping photos, while they picked up registration bags, made massage appointments, and chatting about the reality of their upcoming race.

“This will be the hardest thing you have ever done.” These are the first words we hear from the race announcers as they describe what the expect while participating in the Absa Cape Epic. I have butterflies in MY stomach. I can’t imagine how Josh and Jackie must be feeling.

The V&A Waterfront is full of shops, sunshine, and great restaurants. We found a perfect Scottish pub, Mitchell’s, and proceeded to drink away the sunny afternoon.

Leaving Cape Town, I was torn between being grateful to experience such a beautiful city and feeling like I hadn’t really gotten to see it.

Josh and Jackie reflect on what they expect to experience at the Prologue. Is that fear? Irony? Jitters? These two can always turn anything into a good laugh.

March 21, 2012

Looking at the map during our breakfast in Stellenbosch, we estimated that Jonkershoek Nature Reserve was about 9-miles away from our hotel via the road. We finished up breakfast and headed out – Josh, then Jackie, then me bringing up the rear. I was on my single speed so was spinning fast to keep up. Navigating the streets out of town, we hit the road and passed several farm houses along the way. The ride was easy with only one real uphill section on the way. After paying 25R (about $3.50), we headed past the gate and into THIS:

Jonkershoek is gorgeous. Majestic and jagged mountains behind us, the trails were well-maintained. We stopped at a trail map and noticed that there had been a forest fire. We found a piece of pretty amongst the charred remains of plants.

Jonkershoek has a lot of climbing up jeep roads. It’s not treacherous, it’s just difficult on a single-speed bicycle. I walked several sections and was fairly far behind my two companions (they were ready for the biggest race of their lives, remember?) and so I enjoyed quite a bit of scenery riding solo.

After a little more climbing, we came across some timber harvesting and finally found the trail sign for single track. We turned onto the Upper Canary Path and…climbed UP single track.

At this point, my legs were pretty shredded and the humidity was killing me. We ran into a local guy who had just come from the top on a fun day ride run. WHAT?!? Yea. You can go to the top of those CRAGGY mountains. No way I was doing that today. I’ll admit, the whistles and hollers from the timber workers was an energy booster but I wasn’t even near equal with the physical prowess of Josh and Jackie. And so I trucked along with my mouth hanging open half in awe of muscle dude who killed the mountain and half in need of a cold beer.

We finally made it to the start of the trail, turned around, and started heading back down. I hate doing that. I’m a looper kind of rider. I don’t want to go there and then have to come ALL THE WAY BACK. But…it’s always amazing to me how, upon the start of a descent, all that uphill all of a sudden feels worth every second of agony you had for the last two hours.

A smile broke out on my face and I started cruising downhill and pumping through the track as fast as I could. At the trail’s end, we came back to the dirt road.

As the sun was starting to hide itself behind the trees, we headed down the road to the visitor center. Past the gates and out onto the paved road, we were all in good moods.

Having shaken our legs out, gotten a good single-track session in, and worked up an appetite, we headed back into town.

We found a great spot right on the main street…and had a delicious bottle of South African (local Stellenbosch) red wine and Indian food.

March 20, 2012

I didn’t do much preparation for South Africa. Josh, my partner, had been training for the Absa Cape Epic for over six months and I’d seen enough of his blood, sweat, and tears for the both of us. I was just the support team, anyway. So my plan was to go, ride my bike, drink some South African wine, chillax in the woods for 10 days. At the time, I didn’t realize how much work being “support” was for two people competing in an 8-day, 800 kilometer mountain bike stage race.

We spent a good hour trying to figure out how to get our bikes and baggage into the small sized SUV we rented at the airport and after shoving me in as an afterthought, we were on our way to Stellenbosch.

On a budget, we had to work with what we had. We’re all in!

We drove away from Cape Town and into the Western Cape countryside. We passed contrasting roadside views: shanty towns and upscale neighborhoods. South Africa has a disparity that is hard to ignore because it’s all right along the road side. Meeting a person in Stellenbosch, he explained it well, “It’s a part of the every day reality of South Africa. The weight of the poor is on us and we don’t ever forget those people are there.” I found that I had this same conflict as I continued my stay in South Africa – wanting to enjoy the amazing pastries and wine mixed with guilt and a sense of irresponsibility for spending money when it’s so apparent there was a need for money for survival right down the street.

We arrived at Bonne Esperance – a cozy and beautiful bed and breakfast a few blocks down from the main street in Stellenbosch. Preparing to camp out for the next week, we were enjoying every amenity at Bonne Esperance.

We were anxious to get on some South African dirt and test out the bikes after having broken them apart to ship them over so after building them back up, we headed out for a quick spin on the road to a bike path.

After two tire blow outs; one of which ended with a bunch of Stan’s NuTubes sealant in my face, we decided to go to dinner instead. Walking down into town at night in Stellenbosch was relaxing. The air was warm and the streets were dark. We walked down a few side streets and past several cafes and a few churches. The whitewashed walls and tree lined streets led us into a busy area with several restaurants to choose from. We stopped at a restaurant on the corner that had a guitar on the wall and great smelling food coming from inside. This was to be our first meal as “Team Honey Badger” and we were sure to order South African beers to go with it.

At 30 years old, I thought my days of being piggy-backed as a mode of transportation were over. Turns out, I was wrong.

In the last hour of the last day at Dirt Rag’s DirtFest, I found myself hanging on to the back of Richie Rich while he sprinted down the trail on foot. Jarring up and down and trying to keep my mind off the pain shooting up my foot at every step, our team of 4 used laughter to avoid thinking about the 6 miles we still had to go until we hit a main road.

Turns out, running down a dirt trail with 100 pounds of me on your back is an awesome cross-training tool. It also makes you sound bad ass – “What did you do to train today? Oh yea? Well, I ran 3 miles in the woods with a sack of potatoes strapped to my back. NBD.”

We were riding bikes on some of the funnest trails in the Allegripis system in Rayestown, PA. Everyone had packed up and hauled out and we stuck around for a final ride with a few friends from Giant, Stan’s NoTubes, Niner, and Felt.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1056" loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="1056" data-permalink="https://cperigen.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/dirt-rags-dirtfest-2012-or-how-i-broke-my-foot-riding-my-bike/beer-school/#main" data-orig-file="https://cperigen.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/beer-school.jpg" data-orig-size="720,960" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="beer school" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Happier times at beer school</p>

The dudes took off fast and I smashed pedals trying to keep up. When you get a bunch of dudes together on bikes (even more specifically INDUSTRY DUDES on bikes), it’s bound to be a testosterone fest (even if that wasn’t the intention). It also doesn’t help that I’m slow on climbs so I tried to make up speed on the downs (which I’m not so bad at – or so I thought).

After heading out on Doe and looping around to Ray’s Revenge, we finally got to the fun section. I don’t know if it was 3 days of riding, the new shoes, or trying too hard to keep up (probably a combination of all three), but I felt uneasy from the start of the rhythm section and started to slow down. After hitting a patch of gravel on the edge of the trail, my back tire skidded off the side of the hill with my foot stuck in the pedal.

Gripped with pain, I clenched a bunch of dirt in my hands while trying to find air. After pushing my bike off me, I had to shove my foot out of the pedal, which was excruciating.

I ended up hobbling along for a half mile, Josh found me on the trail with Rich and Brian in tow. It was clear I shouldn’t be walking so I hopped onto the seat of Josh’s bike while he attempted to pedal us down the trail without bucking me face-down back into the dirt. Bad idea.

So, what to do? And this is how I ended up on Rich’s back while he sprinted down the trail. Switching from one sweaty back to another, Josh and Rich took turns while Brian took care of my bike.

Back at DirtFest base camp, the guys set me up in the Sprinter van with a rapidly swelling ankle and some ice.

And then I ended up with this:

After participating in Single Speed World Championships in Ireland this last fall, I had to make it to the Single Speed US Championships in Vermont. I couldn’t pass up another opportunity to spend a day on my bike, drinking beer, IN COSTUME.

SSWC 2011 – Ireland

After taking care of a bunch of international kids this July, I had NO time to plan an elaborate costume so I was at the mercy of our friend who claimed he had the raddest jersey ever and no costume would be necessary. Tall claim.

I, of course, got blown out of the water by Wonder Woman, who has made appearances now at three races and been a complete hit each time. I do feel that Single Speed Championships are as much about the costume as the race itself and felt a little disappointed in myself that I didn’t get my shit together in time.

Good news was, the jersey WAS FUCKING AWESOME. I threw it on in addition to some 80’s hot pants and was ready to go.

A unicorn barfing a rainbow…classic.

The thing is, don’t be fooled: these races are HARD. I biffed my chin on a slippery bridge in Ireland, always expect 30+ miles of riding, and weather is always a toss-up (pouring rain in Ireland, humidity in Vermont). And single speed riders are FAST. SSUSA 2012 was no different.

It’s all fun and games at the “start.”

After a hearty, “Don’t be a douche!” and then an, “Okay. Go,” the race began. The trails were technical and rooty. There was a shit-ton of climbing. It was HOT. And there was a lot of beer.

Aid Station

I’m not gonna lie. This shit was hard. I got lost. I walked. I sweated my ass off. I got passed by the DFL guy (yea, I passed him back!). With a healing broken leg/ankle thing going on, I got “sweeped” by the sweeper at mile 23. And was relieved.

I somehow missed out on this:

Yea, those are my peeps…

And this:

Although, the latter I don’t feel so bad about. Old English 40s?? Gross.

We took a lot of pictures. You can see them here.

It all ended at the Rusty Nail with live music, beer, food, and these sweet shoes.

After some pickle munching, we were all smiles.

Although, there was some rumbling on the accuracy of the judging at the syrup chugging competition and push up competition, SSUSA 2013 will be hosted in Minnesota.

SSWC will be in South Africa this year and we are slated to go (minus a little issue we call WORK) and we’re hoping to sneak away for the race. Costume planning is in full force.

March 20, 2012

I didn’t do much preparation for South Africa. Josh, my partner, had been training for the Absa Cape Epic for almost six months and watching how much work went into that, I figured that was enough preparation for both of us.

I feel like I must state a somewhat obvious: A common mis-conception is that when you say, “I’m going to South Africa!” people assume you mean the wild safari of the African continent. South Africa has wild safari areas but Western Cape and the areas we were in were definitely colonial Dutch, very settled and developed. Cape Town is a modern metropolis and the surrounding suburbs are gorgeous with gated communities and multi-million dollar homes along the coast.

<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-985" loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="985" data-permalink="https://cperigen.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/south-african-adventure-new-york-to-cape-town/map-of-south-africa/#main" data-orig-file="https://cperigen.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/map-of-south-africa.gif" data-orig-size="320,350" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":""}" data-image-title="map of south africa" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>South Africa &#8211; We were in the lower Western Cape area.</p>

Don’t get me wrong, there are dangerous areas, poor areas, wild safari areas – we just weren’t really in them.

It was a non-negotiable topic that we would both bring our bikes – mine, a steel stallion singlespeed Bronto and Josh, a fancy full suspension Anthem 29er. We needed to pack light so, beyond our bikes, I brought an Arcteryx pack with about six days worth of clothes, all the media gear I could shove in, and toiletries – all for a two week long trip where I had no clue what the conditions would be or where we would really be staying.

We met up with Jackie, Josh’s race partner and went through the challenge of fitting all of our gear into a modest-sized SUV.

My partner, Josh, signed up for the Absa Cape Epic 2012. He asked if I wanted to and, at the time, I thought it was the craziest idea I’d ever heard of. The South Africa Absa Cape Epic is an 8 day, 800km mountain bike stage race and must be done with a partner. As I tapped out early on, Josh recruited his colleague, Jackie Baker, to join the adventure.

Since October, Jackie and Josh have been training for the toughest mountain bike stage race in the world. I’ve been there to document, badger these two for blog posts, help in securing sponsors, getting media coverage and overall, doing all the little things that they don’t have time to do since they spend 2-6 hours a day on a bicycle.

Now, it’s 13 days until Jackie and Josh will be sitting at the starting line and I’m starting to realize that I, too, am going to South Africa. I’m bringing my Bronto singlespeed and I’ll be shredding on some trails in Stellenbosch with the likes of mountain bikers I’ve never seen before.

Stellenbosch is the informal meeting place for all the pro riders doing this race. Absa has about 50 world-class teams that are to be watched and include pro racers from around the world. Out of 600 teams, 300 of them are highly competitive. I’m way out of my league. But who cares? I’ll be riding bikes in South Africa amongst mountains, trees, hills, grasses, and villages like I’ve never seen before. I’ll be following a group of amazing mountain bikers each day snapping pictures, taking video, and enjoying some leisurely rides along the way. I’m getting excited.

The next few days will require a ton of packing, planning, re-packing, and learning how to use the camcorder. So far, this is the only decent footage I’ve taken.

But, it says it all.
