Type: Sermon. Jesus’ birth is no a myth; it’s the wondrous, supernatural entry of the eternal God into a specific time and place in history. Examining Luke chapter 2, Alistair Begg notes that the angel’s message to the shepherds was the very word of God, compelling them to go and see all that had happened just as the angel said. God’s Word does not demand blind faith but encourages us to consider and declare the historical reality of the baby in a manger—a baby born to be the Savior of the world.

Type: Series.
A Study in 1 and 2 Samuel

What does the history of Israel’s kings have to do with the Christian life today? You might be surprised! The Old Testament books of 1 and 2 Samuel trace the development of Israel’s monarchy from its establishment under the prophet Samuel through the reigns of the nation’s first kings, Saul and David. Yet as memorable as these stories may be, an even greater story lies at their heart: that of the true King, “great David’s greater Son,” who would one day come to establish His throne and rule in our hearts forever.

In volume one of this series, Alistair Begg walks us through the life of Samuel, a boy of improbable birth who would grow up to become a key leader during the dawning of Israel’s kingship. Throughout the nation’s early conflicts with the Philistines, Samuel repeatedly pointed them back to God as their source of true salvation—a promise they would ultimately spurn in their search for an earthly king.

Type: Sermon. Following Absalom’s death, King David returned to Jerusalem—but his homecoming was not marked by joyous celebration. Instead, all the men of Israel withdrew their allegiance to David to follow Sheba the Benjaminite. As Alistair Begg explains, while David used his military might to crush Sheba’s rebellion, he could not establish an enduring kingdom. Only Jesus will reign forever in perfect righteousness when He returns to usher in His kingdom.

Type: Sermon. Sin always has consequences. Few people knew that better than David, whose once robust kingdom declined into a shadow of its former self, marked by instability and injustice. Focusing on the final verses of 2 Samuel 20, Alistair Begg draws a line between David’s sin with Bathsheba and the ultimate failure of his dynasty. But as we consider David’s failure, we also turn our eyes to the one perfect King, Jesus, who promises to restore what sin destroys.

In volume two of this series, Alistair Begg examines the reign of Israel’s first king, Saul—a reign that began with dire warnings and reached its low point in Saul’s defiance of God and God’s subsequent rejection of Saul. While King Saul’s downslide paved the way for King David’s rise, it also serves as a stark reminder of the danger of trusting in earthly rulers when our hearts were made to worship at heaven’s throne.

In volume three of this series, Alistair Begg shifts his focus away from the deteriorating reign of King Saul and onto the dramatic rise of God’s anointed replacement, David. In his journey from shepherd boy to giant-slayer to the king’s son-in-law, David was blessed by the Lord and protected from harm, continuing to do so even when Saul himself began to seek the life of this new threat to his pride and power.

In volume four of this series, Alistair Begg follows 1 Samuel’s account of the tense and sometimes bloody conflicts between the jealous King Saul and the clever but deferential David, who would come to inherit Israel’s crown. Constantly on the run and in danger of Saul’s spear, David nevertheless extended mercy and good service to the embattled monarch, even to the day when Saul met his death by his own sword.

In volume five of this series, Alistair Begg looks at the start of David’s earthly reign. After mourning Saul and Jonathan’s deaths, David ascended to his throne, extending love to his enemies and promising faithfulness in return—while his men often did the opposite. Yet even after he established Zion, defeated the Philistines, and returned the ark to Jerusalem, the cracks in his dynasty would soon begin to show.

In volume six of this series, Alistair Begg turns our attention to the promises of 2 Samuel 7, in which God made a covenant with David to “establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” Alistair helps us see that this chapter’s promises extend far beyond the earthly kingdom of Israel to encompass Revelation’s vision of a great company of nations gathered around God’s throne to worship David’s ultimate heir, Jesus.

In volume seven of this series, Alistair Begg considers the early battles of King David’s reign—both the temporal battles against Israel’s enemies, where David found victory, and his spiritual battle against sexual temptation, where he met unquestionable defeat. Yet even at his lowest point of failure, David discovered the astounding truth made plain in Christ’s atoning death: no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
