August 29, 2015

(Minghui.org) In July and August, more than 17,000 residents in Taichung, Taiwan signed a criminal report form urging the Chinese authorities to bring former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin to justice.

Such efforts echo the recent flood of lawsuits against Jiang filed by 157,000 Falun Gong practitioners in China and overseas for launching and directing the violent persecution of Falun Gong. The number of lawsuits has steadily increased since May.

According to Chinese law, a criminal report form signed and dated by any individual with knowledge of a crime constitutes a criminal complaint that can be submitted to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and Court.

The signatures in Taichung come from those in all walks of life, including government officials, city council members, lawyers, teachers, and doctors.

City Council Member: Signature Campaign Will Raise Awareness of the Persecution

He Mingjie, a Taichung city council member signed the criminal report form and said that the city council has passed a resolution condemning the persecution of Falun Gong. “No matter where you are, no matter what you believe, everybody should have the basic human rights,” he said.

“The signature campaign will raise the public awareness of the persecution,” he added. “I believe that more and more people will join the support for the peaceful resistance.”

“I even bought hundreds copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party for my Chinese friends. When they come to Taiwan, I always take them to Falun Gong’s booths at the tourist spot, and tell them to read your materials,” he said to a practitioner.

August 29, 2015 | By a Minghui correspondent in Guizhou Province

(Minghui.org) The Railway Police in Guizhou Province is using the ticket checking system to identify Falun Gong practitioners, search their belongings, and take them to brainwashing centers or prison.

Since the Chinese communist regime began its suppression of Falun Gong in 1999, practitioners have faced arbitrary arrest, detention, imprisonment, and torture for their beliefs. Ticketing systems have become the latest surveillance tool used by police to capture Falun Gong practitioners as they go about their daily lives.

Mr. Wang Zhixue, 39, was arrested at the Guiyang Railway Station on November 20, 2013, because his ID card showed that he practiced Falun Gong. In February 2015, he was sentenced to nine years in Doyun Prison. His appeal was denied.

In Guiyang City, Mr. Chen Jun and his mother were identified through their IDs at a railway station on July 4, 2015. Police found Zhuan Falun, the main book of Falun Gong, and other Falun Gong materials. They arrested Mr. Chen, ransacked his home, and took him to the Lannigou Brainwashing Center. He is still in custody at the time of writing.

These police activities violate Chinese law, including recording citizens’ religious beliefs on an identification card and checking citizens’ personal information through the ticketing system. Searching practitioners’ persons and their belongings based on religious beliefs found from such information is also illegal.

August 29, 2015 | By He Yu

(Minghui.org) The Supreme People’s Procuratorate in China announced on August 21 that former 610 Office head Li Dongsheng has been indicted for bribery.

Although he has several titles, Chinese media publicized his role in the 610 Office, a secretive organization that directs the persecution of Falun Gong, after he was taken down in December 2013.

Appointed deputy head of the 610 Office when the organization was formed in 1999, Li was also a deputy director of China Central Television (CCTV). In that role, he was in charge of the nationwide propaganda campaign againt Falun Gong to garner public support for its suppression. After Liu Jing retired in October 2009, Li was appointed by Zhou Yongkang as Deputy Minister of Public Security and was in charge of the 610 Office.

As a key player in the organization that drives the nationwide suppression of Falun Gong, Li has a track record of stirring up hate propaganda and violence against innocent practitioners.

Government-Directed Campaign of Slander

Although Jiang Zemin ordered Falun Gong banned in July 1999, it was the nationwide propaganda campaign that turned the public against peaceful practitioners.

Li instructed CCTV to play seven hours of defamatory programs every day. These programs attack Falun Gong’s founder Mr. Li Hongzhi and claim practitioners kill or commit suicide using fabricated footage.

One example is “Focus,” a popular CCTV primetime program about current affairs. For six and a half years, between July 21, 1999 and late 2005, “Focus” featured 102 anti-Falun Gong episodes, according to a 2013 report published by the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG). Between July and December 1999 alone, there were 39 anti-Falun Gong episodes, according to the same report.

Another example is CCTV News, broadcast daily at 7:00 p.m. Considered a staple news program, it is the primary news source for the Chinese, whether they live in the city or the countryside. Li extended the program from 30 minutes to 45 minutes to ensure that sufficient anti-Falun Gong content was incorporated into the news.

These defamatory reports were picked up and spread to newspapers and radios by Xinhua News Agency and disseminated overseas through China News Service (CNS), Hong Kong China News Agency (CNA), and Chinese diplomatic agencies.

Second Wave of Defamation

Li’s efforts were very effective in swaying public opinion. In July 2000, he was promoted to deputy director of China’s State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT).

Meanwhile, the persecution began to lose momentum. The brutality practitioners suffered for their belief made many people reconsider the legitimacy of the suppression.

Instructed by Ze Qinghong, head of the Organization Department (1999-2002), and Luo Gan, secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee (1998-2007), Li orchestrated the “Tiananmen Square self-immolation“, pushing the propaganda to a new level.

The incident on Tiananmen Square was quickly identified by the Washington Post and numerous overseas organizations as a hoax. The event was also covered by the award-winning documentary False Fire.

But inside China, the fabrication quickly spread–with devastating consequences. Because the staged self-immolation took place the day before the Chinese New Year and included a 12-year-old girl and her mother, the TV program was viewed by a huge audience. The report was carried in newspapers and on television and was even included in school textbooks. The sympathy people had for Falun Gong practitioners turned to anger and hatred.

The popular CCTV program “Focus” acted as a catalyst to fuel hatred against Falun Gong practitioners. In 2001 alone, 39 anti-Falun Gong episodes were aired on the program.

As tens of millions of Falun Gong practitioners suffered tremendously for their belief, Li Dongsheng was promoted in May 2002 to deputy minister of the Propaganda Department. As his power increased, his campaign of propaganda was further intensified with violence and torture.

The Persecution Continues

Sixteen years into the suppression, the brutality done to Falun Gong practitioners is astonishing, from arrest, detention, torture, and incarceration in mental hospitals to sexual abuse, forced labor, and live organ harvesting.

Li’s downfall and indictment is not accidental; many high-ranking officials who have actively persecuted Falun Gong have met similar fates, from Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang to Xu Caihou.

Canadian MP Rob Anders said that the justice system will eventually “turn on those people who were the most corrupt and villainous and tyrannical and oppressive with regard to Falun Gong.” He said that those who were most heavily involved in persecuting Falun Gong, “are the ones who overstepped the bounds of decency the most.”

He further explained, “They didn’t just take money. They took dignity, they took integrity, they stole traditions away—they did all these things. They committed incredible human rights violations.” Mr. Anders said he believes that the perpetrators will be held accountable when the communist regime starts to collapse.

U.S. Congressman Chris Smith, a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and chairman of its Global Human Rights and International Organization Subcommittee, said he supported the wave of criminal complaints against Jiang being filed by the Chinese.

During a congressional hearing on June 25, 2015, he said, “The courage and the bravery of the Chinese people that keep filing these complaints, that keeps them coming out pushing for democracy and accountability on the Party and the government, is awe-inspiring, because so many of them… are punished in some way, and yet they can persist.”

“The Western world, the free world anywhere in the world, should be having their backs, every day of the week and 24/7, to say, ‘We stand with you and we stand with the suppressed,’” Smith added.

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners from Indonesia are using various opportunities to raise public awareness of the 16-year long persecution of Falun Gong in China. The recent international competition, the Ironman 70.3 Bintan, offered such an opportunity.

The event was attended by 800 athletes from Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, China, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Morocco, and included a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bicycle race, and a 13-mile run.

Along the major pathways of the event, practitioners demonstrated the exercises, held banners, passed out informational materials, and collected signatures on petitions that condemn the persecution.

August 28, 2015 | By a practitioner from Shandong Province, China

(Minghui.org) I went to a photocopy shop to make a copy of my criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former Communist Party leader. When I entered the store, Zhang, one of the employees, was talking with my brother’s coworkers, Wang and Hu (aliases).

Zhang took my USB flash drive to make the copies. Wang grabbed the first page out of the copier and noticed that it was an indictment letter. He asked if I was suing Jiang Zemin, and Hu burst out saying that I was a Falun Gong practitioner.

“Yes, I want to sue Jiang,” I said. “He is very evil, which he has shown by the persecution of Falun Gong. He initiated the persecution. He can’t get away with it.”

“Actually I know this practice is very good.” responded Hu. “Falun Gong teaches people to do good deeds and to improve their character. I have tried the practice.”

I told them that Falun Gong teaches people to practice the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

Wang asked why practitioners surrounded the Chinese Central Government compound in 1999.

“It was a very peaceful appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong,” I said. “Jiang was jealous because the cultivation practice had grown to about one hundred million practitioners in just seven years.”

I then told them that everything that the Chinese government published and broadcast about the practice of Falun Gong was fabricated. Hu said that he had given up the practice because the regime’s leaders told the Chinese people to do so.

“People in more than 100 countries now practice Falun Gong. If the persecution had not occurred, you would most likely still be practicing it. For that, you should also sue Jiang.”

Wang and Hu agreed that Jiang should be put on trial and that he is very evil. They told me that they support practitioners in their efforts to sue him.

Wang wondered if the case against Jiang had merit and could be won.

“Don’t worry about it. We will win. Justice is with Falun Gong practitioners and good people worldwide,” I said. “More than 140,000 people have already sued Jiang, as of today. More and more practitioners are working on their complaints against Jiang.”

At the time of this writing, 13 of the practitioners remain in detention.

Mr. Yuan Shuchen Dies on Same Day of Arrest

Mr. Yuan, 65, suddenly passed away on the day of his arrest, with the police blaming the death on a “heart problem.” His family is working to find out the true cause of his death.

Prior to his arrest, Mr. Yuan had his home ransacked by local police on June 18. The officers confiscated many of his personal belongings, including two laptop computers, two printers, one CD burner, and three paper cutters. They tried to take Mr. Yuan away as well, but were stopped by his family members.

Non-practitioner Wife Seized while Trying to Stop Husband’s Arrest

Close to three dozen agents descended on Mr. Xie Xingguo’s house at around 4:00 a.m. on August 21. They scaled the fence and broke into the home. When Mr. Xie’s wife, who is not a practitioner, tried to stop the officers from taking away her husband, she was also arrested. She was held by police until later that day.

Thirteen Other Arrested Practitioners

In addition to Mr. Yuan and Mr. Xie, 13 other practitioners from Hengshui were also arrested on the same day, including Liu Xiuming, Wen Ping, Liu Yuping, Zhang Jinshan, a practitioner surnamed Feng, Yan Jun, Wei Xiubian, Xiu Yanhua, and five members of the same family (Wang Fulu and his wife Zhang Lanjun, along with their two sons and one daughter-in-law).

Except for Mr. Wang’s daughter-in-law, who was released later on August 21, the rest of the practitioners remain at various local detention centers at the time of this writing.

PLAC Secretary Behind Arrests

According to insiders, Dai Guohua, secretary of Hengshui City Political and Legal Affairs Committee, was the official behind the arrests. He has held many meetings since June to plot surveillance and arrests of local practitioners suspected filing lawsuits against Jiang Zemin. He ordered local post offices to stop processing criminal complaint letters submitted by practitioners, and also directed local counties to set up new brainwashing centers to hold arrested practitioners.

(Minghui.org) The opening ceremony for “The Art of Zhen, Shan, Ren (Truth, Compassion, Tolerance) International Exhibition” was held in the YouCaring Compassion in Action Gallery in downtown San Francisco on August 21. The show will be up for a week.

Because the exhibition hall is in the downtown area, the rental fee is high. But the gallery owner was deeply moved by the artwork and its message and waived the fee.

Visitors study the paintings.

“I Sense the Divine [in the Artwork]”

Exhibit visitor Mr. Satnam Nandha, who works at the Federal Reserve Bank, was very impressed by this collection of artwork by Falun Gong practitioners.

“I like all the works. Wonderful. I sense the divine in them,” he told the Minghui correspondent.

Mr. Nandha’s favorite was the painting “Melting into the Fa.”

“The artist must be highly spiritual,” he said. “It reflects peace and manifests the inner world of the artist’s heart.”

The painting shows a mother holding a baby and reading the book Zhuan Falun, the main book of the Falun Gong teachings, under low lamplight.

“If everybody could reach this kind of inner peace, the world would be a wonderful place,” he said.

Mr. Nandha also learned about the persecution of Falun Gong in China from some of the paintings. He said he couldn’t understand why anyone would persecute such peaceful, kind people.

“I Admire Their Perseverance”

Samantha, a media editor from New York, said the exhibition was not her first encounter with Falun Gong. She said she had learned about the persecution from numerous Falun Gong events in Manhattan.

“I’m glad I got to see this wonderful artwork, which has helped me learn more about Falun Gong,” she said. “I admire their [practitioners] perseverance and strong faith in the face of the persecution. I can sense positive energy from the artwork. The peacefulness, kindness, and dignity of the practitioners is remarkable.”

The exhibition will continue until August 28.

August 26, 2015 | By a Minghui correspondent from Shandong Province, China

(Minghui.org) When three people tried to visit a Falun Gong practitioner at a detention center last month, they were turned away, but then followed and forcibly arrested by the police.

The Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Li Zhiqiang from Dezhou City, Shandong Province, was recently sentenced to four years in prison after being illegally detained for one year and seven months for his belief.

Mr. Li’s son, nephew, and friend, Ms. Wang Yanzhi, tried to visit him on July 27, 2015. All three were arrested and taken to the Xincheng Police Station, where they were interrogated and mistreated. Ms. Wang was transferred to the Dezhou City Detention Center.

Arrested for Visiting Mr. Li Zhiqiang

When these three went to visit Mr. Li, they were told that he might be transferred to a prison and thus visitation rights were withdrawn. Therefore they caught a late afternoon bus back to the city.

Three plainclothes officers got on that bus at the Xinghelu Station. At the next bus station, the three people got off the bus. The officers followed and suddenly grabbed them. Mr. Li’s son asked that they show their identification. The police refused and instead video-recorded them.

Then, a car arrived with a group of police officers. The three were surrounded by officers who tried to force them into the car. Since the car did not have enough room, the police called a taxi. They resisted the police. The son’s glasses and bag were confiscated.

“My father is imprisoned by the police because of practicing Falun Gong,” he shouted. “Now you want to arrest us just because we visited him. Falun Gong is good.”

People surrounded them, the taxi driver refused to cooperate with the police and drove away. Eventually, the police called another police car, handcuffed the three and pushed them into the vehicle.

The three were taken to the Xincheng Police Station. The police confiscated all their personal belongings and separated them for interrogation.

Interrogated and Mistreated

Mr. Li’s son was taken to the interrogation room, handcuffed to the wall for more than two hours and interrogated for more than three hours.

The nephew was taken to another interrogation room. His hands were tied behind his back and his feet shackled. The interrogation lasted until past midnight. Then he was left in the interrogation room for the night with handcuffs on. His right arm was injured and the handcuffs left a mark on his wrist.

Ms. Wang began to throw up in the police station. She could not talk or even sit still. The police mocked her and said that she pretended to be sick. Then, the police called a doctor who did not treat her. The police turned the air conditioner to very cold and left her like this for the entire night.

A group of officers from the domestic security team and the Xincheng Police Station ransacked Ms. Wang’ home for three hours. They confiscated Falun Gong books and materials, banners and many other personal belongings. They did this in front of Ms. Wang’s mother-in-law and her granddaughter.

The police demanded that Ms. Wang’s daughter come to the police station and interrogated her for over five hours the next morning. They again interrogated Ms. Wang that morning. Ms. Wang’s daughter demanded to see her mother and was finally allowed to see her in the afternoon. The police refused to have her mother treated despite her poor health condition.

The police demanded that Mr. Li’s nephew provide his contact information and he refused. Therefore, they confiscated his cell phone to get his contact information.

The domestic security police released Mr. Li’s son and nephew at 9:00 p.m. However, not until they signed a guarantee statement that promised not to practice Falun Gong and their release forms. They also took blood samples and fingerprinted them.

The police took Ms. Wang to the Dezhou City Detention Center, although her daughter tried to prevent this transfer.

The police issued Ms. Wang’s official detention notice and a general letter claiming that Ms. Wang’s health was fine.

August 27, 2015 | By a Minghui correspondent in Hebei Province

(Minghui.org) Having suffered unimaginable torture for remaining resolute in her belief in Falun Gong, Ms. Ren Jinping from Langfang City, Hebei Province recently filed a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of Chinese Communist Party for launching the persecution campaign against Falun Gong.

To bear witness to the relentless persecution and bring the main perpetrator to justice, Ms. Ren revisits the darkest moments of her life of 10 years ago and recounts the numerous occasions when she was targeted for her belief—nine arrests, illegal detentions, brutal torture, rape by a police officer, forced labor, and sexual abuse.

She also recalls the devastation of losing both parents in a span of five months and the guilt of causing pain and suffering to close family members. Painful as it is, she states, “My ordeal is only the tip of the iceberg of how Falun Gong practitioners in China have suffered in the past 16 years.”

“I only wish to file charges against Jiang,” she clarifies. “Though many public security officials were involved more directly in my persecution, I no longer bear resentment toward them—not even the police officer who raped me. They were all being used and are victims themselves.”

Ms. Ren is charging Jiang with illegal imprisonment, torture, organ harvesting, and genocide. Her complaint was sent on June 26, 2015 and received by the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate the next day.

Following is a summary of what Ms. Ren suffered.

Repeated Arrests

Ms. Ren started practicing Falun Gong in 1995 and soon regained her health. She became energetic and more considerate of others. Her family, friends, and neighbors were amazed by how much she had changed.

When Jiang Zemin launched the persecution against Falun Gong, Ms. Ren made two trips to Beijing between October 1999 and May 2000 to appeal for the right to practice. She was arrested both times, beaten, and fined. After the second arrest, she was sent back to Langfang and tied to a death bed for 45 hours at the city detention center.

Three police officers arrested Ms. Ren in June 2000 for doing Falun Gong exercises in public. They beat her for more than an hour in broad daylight until she lost consciousness, and then took her to the city detention center. She was beaten by director Xing with a shoe, which resulted in severe swelling and loss of hearing.

To escape an attempted arrest in September 2000, Ms. Ren left home to live in Beijing temporarily. During her 19-month stay in Beijing, she was arrested three times for telling people or posting information about the persecution of Falun Gong. Twice she was sent to a detention center, where she was tortured and almost became a victim of organ harvesting. Another time she was raped by a police officer.

“We Could Easily Find a Match”

Ms. Ren was arrested just a few months after she moved to Beijing in September 2000. While detained at the Chaoyang Detention Center, Ms. Ren was secretly given extensive physical examinations and various tests at the Civil Aviation General Hospital.

“The doctor looked at my results and said, ‘The results look great. We could easily find a match.’ At the time, I had no idea what he meant.”

The guards took her out of her cell after midnight the following day and cuffed her hands behind her and shackled her feet. She was put into the trunk of a car escorted by armed police officers. Curled up in an awkward position in the trunk with her hands cuffed and feet shackled, the pain quickly became unbearable.

After driving for an hour, the car’s engine died. The vehicle was towed back to the Chaoyang Detention Center. Ms. Ren was told not to speak about this.

Years later, she happened to be watching a TV program about state-sanctioned organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners in China. It suddenly dawned on her what could have happened to her. “I still tremble with fear whenever I think of what could have happened that night.”

Raped by a Police Officer

While putting up posters with Dafa information in Beijing in May 2001, Ms. Ren was stopped by a police officer. He tried to grope her while giving her a pat down and when she did not allow it to continue, he beat her with a rubber club until she lost consciousness. He then dragged her to a nearby bridge and raped her.

“I felt a severe pain in my lower body and knew right away what had happened. After the deed was done, he inserted the rubber club into my vagina and sat on top of me. I am not sure how many hours had past before I finally regained consciousness.”

When she saw the officer sitting nearby smoking a cigarette, she shouted for help. He did not appear concerned at all. “Yes, I raped you. I could have killed you and thrown you into the river. We have directives from higher ups to treat Falun Gong however we want.”

In great pain, she managed to get home after he left. She remained in bed, drifting in and out of consciousness for the next few days. She could not move at all. The physical pain eventually passed, but the psychological damage will haunt her for the rest of her life.

The Public Security Hospital

While distributing fliers with Dafa information in October 2001, Ms. Ren was arrested in Beijing. At the Sanjianfang Police Station. she was handcuffed and locked in a metal cage for a day and a night. Later, she was transferred to the Chaoyang Detention Center, where she was detained more than two months.

She was subjected to beatings, made to stand for long periods of time, and her face burned with cigarette butts. Because she refused to write a guarantee statement and renounce her belief, she was confined to a small cell. She was on the verge of death when she was transferred to the Public Security Hospital that December.

The basement of the Public Security Hospital was used to detain Falun Gong practitioners from all over the country. Most were brought there after being tortured to the verge of death. All of the practitioners were cuffed and shackled to a bed in the “spread eagle” position and were only let down when they ate or used the bathroom.

The medical personnel took blood samples from each practitioner every morning. Whoever resisted were shocked with electric batons. A blood sample of 60 ml was drawn from Ms. Ren almost every day during the 27 days she was there.

Authorities from the Langfang Police Department eventually found out where she was and transferred her back. She was sent directly to the Yuecheng Brainwashing Center upon returning to Langfang. During the month she was detained there, the guards beat her every day in an attempt to get her to renounce her belief.

Tortured at the Kaiping Women’s Forced Labor Camp

Ms. Ren was arrested in her own home in Langfang in March 2004 and taken to the Kaiping Women’s Forced Labor Camp in Tangshan City, where she was held for two years. She was confined to a small cell for over a year.

She was made to stand 24 hours a day for three weeks in a row, which caused incontinence and her legs to swell. The guards abused her around the clock. They sometimes forced her to kneel down and shocked her on the bottom of her feet with electric batons. The window to her cell was sealed with tape during torture sessions so that no one could hear her screams. The temperature inside the cell rose above 100 degrees during the summer.

Four female guards once stripped her completely naked and yanked all her pubic hair out. They then forced her to stand, even though she was bleeding heavily. She eventually lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Family’s Suffering

After Ms. Ren left home in September 2000, her non-practitioner husband, Wang Zhixin, was illegally arrested and detained for two weeks. With both parents gone and no place to go, their son slept on the street. The police also frequently harassed and threatened her husband.

The police often harassed Ms. Ren’s elderly parents at their home, almost always in the middle of the night. The couple was taken to the police station late at night one time and weren’t released until after midnight. Constant fear and anxiety took a toll on both her parents’ health.

After Ms. Ren was sent to the forced labor camp in 2004, her mother’s health declined rapidly and she passed away in less than a month. Five months later, her father passed away.

“When I learned of the deaths of my parents, I was so heart-broken and I passed out. The guilt tears me up into a thousand pieces every time I think of them.”

Background

In 1999, Jiang Zemin, as head of the Chinese Communist Party, overrode other Politburo standing committee members and launched the violent suppression of Falun Gong.

The persecution has led to the deaths of thousands Falun Gong practitioners over the past 16 years. More have been tortured for their belief and even killed for their organs. Jiang Zemin is directly responsible for the inception and continuation of the brutal persecution.

Under his personal direction, the Chinese Communist Party established an extralegal security organ, the “610 Office,” on June 10, 1999. The organization overrides police forces and the judicial system in carrying out Jiang’s directive regarding Falun Gong: to ruin their reputations, cut off their financial resources, and destroy them physically.

Chinese law now allows for citizens to be plaintiffs in criminal cases, and many practitioners are exercising that right to file criminal complaints against the former dictator.
