Larry served as the Gallery Director for the Fine Arts gallery, and the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. He retired in 2003 as Gallery Director Emeritus, and is now concentrating on his own studio work.

Trish Nixon: Does the ceramic work reference that of the ancient Japanese tomb mounds you refer to in one of your earlier statements?

Larry Peters: Yes, the "Grave Marker" group of works refers to the Japanese "Haniwa" of the ancient tomb mounds.

TN: “Black Marker” I assume is referencing the ancient Kofun burial mounds. What do the two holes represent in the center of the slab-like form?

LP: "Black Marker" is just a title and has no specific reference and the holes are just to break up the surface and have no specific reference either.

TN: What other symbols or meaning should one look for in this body of work?

LP: "Markers" may mark any significant event, point in one’s life. They might also be a sort of guardian.

TN: Are there any craft or art movements that you are influenced by…any artists?

LP: A great deal of my clay work has been influenced by past Chinese and Japanese functional pottery. Even with the sculptural pieces I have kept the use of the potter’s wheel and the making of the vessel-like forms.

Even if it is not easily evident, I have been influenced by my first instructor in college, Jack Wright. I have also been influenced by people such as Peter Voulkos, Ken Ferguson, Byron Temple, and Toshiko Takaezu.

People that have had some influence upon my two-dimensional work (collage) are Cy Twombly, Antoni Tapies, Robert Motherwell, Anselm Kiefer and an early instructor, Jim Hunt.

on the Holocaust collages

TN: Recently, I found a reference to some of your influences for your collages—-Anselm Kiefer, Antoni Tapies, and Robert Motherwell which I can see immediately (looking at Remains 2). Are the collages an on-going project? If so, do they take a new direction?

LP: Yes, collage is an on-going medium for me and they have taken on a new direction for a group of small works that have been titled the "French Bedroom or French Panties" series.

TN: Is it safe to assume that the focus on representing ghettos, extermination and work camps mirror what’s currently happening in other cultures throughout the world?

LP: Yes, these sorts of things are still happening around the world.

TN: Is there anything you want the viewer to get after observing the work?

LP: The world is not perfect and will not be and of course, I do not want to see the "Holocaust" forgotten.

TN: Intense, sad, real, and eye-opening seem to be appropriate descriptors of the “Holocaust” series. Do you want visitors to view the series as a memorial or more as a reminder?

LP: I hope more as a reminder, however, viewers may see the work as a memorial and that is quite alright. I started the work as a release from my readings on the subject. I had a question that I could not answer and that was about what would I have been and done if I had been born earlier and in Germany. My ancestry is almost all German.

Talking Books at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is a free service that provides specialized audio books, recorded magazines, players, descriptive videos, and Braille materials to those living in the service area that qualify for the program. Individuals are eligible for the program if they have any of the following conditions:

Have low vision or have been diagnosed legally blind
Have difficulty holding a book or turning its pages
Have a medically certified reading disability due to an organic function

Interested persons need to apply for the service by filling out an application, have it certified by an appropriate authority, and return it to the library's Talking Books Department. Applications can be picked up at the Red Carpet Desk or printed off our library website.

Africa Everyday was a hit!

Between Super Bowl 44, President's Day closing and a seemingly endless amount of snow, Africa Everyday faced some attendance challenges, but we still managed to attract 2,989 visitors.

Among the crowd were Washburn Art classes (Art Techniques, Art Appreciation and Design II) and KU African American Studies Professor, Dorthy Pennington. We also gave tours to library staff, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, students from Hope Street Academy, Highland Park High School and Robinson Middle School, and residents of Brewster Place.

Looking to take a day trip without burning a hole in your wallet?

Many regional museums have free admission throughout the year and host family friendly exhibits. I recently took a trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City to view the Hide and Seek, Picturing Childhood photography exhibit. Mysterious, Alluring, disturbing, and hopeful are just a few words I would use to describe such a thought provoking display. Imagination, play, education, and harsh social realities are a few themes represented in Hide and Seek. We look to the past as well as present conditions of childhood, the stories that are preserved over time, and childhood experiences in the making.

Photographer Lewis Hine reminds the viewer of the cruel realities of child labor. In one particular image (dated in the early 1900s) by Hine a little girl is working in a cotton mill on what appears to be a threading machine. In contrast to Hine’s imagery of child labor, “Girl Being Prepared for a Horse Show, Sandwich, NH, 2004” by Sage Sohier represents a childhood that is more familiar to us today. The girl’s expressionless face lets us know that she is used to this kind of attention and doesn’t seem thrilled in the least. One may also wonder what life is like for this girl. Does she get a chance to play, to be a kid?

The most striking photograph of the exhibition is Gloria Baker Feinstein’s, “Boy with Ball” which was shot during the photographer’s stay in Kajjansi, Uganda in 2007. At first glance, one might think the boy is living in a safe and carefree environment. However, upon closer inspection we are reminded of a grim and violent reality of war that has effected so many living in Uganda. The boy represented in this photograph is seemingly unaware of the devastation that surrounds him. I couldn’t help but feel optimistic when viewing “Boy with Ball”. Other photographers in the exhibition are Sally Mann, Helen Levitt, Lewis Carroll, and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Hide and Seek is an exhibit for all ages stirring curiosity and imagination.

Topeka Competition 29 Guestbook Comments

The Topeka Competition is one of the most fun and challenging shows we do. It contains work that pushes boundaries—and ultimately people's buttons—as taste and personal definitions of art are tested.

I think we broke a comment record with the Topeka Competition 29 as the stack of pages to transcribe was nearly 3/4 of an inch thick.

People thoroughly enjoyed this show. Although it appealed to all ages, kids seemed extra determined to find meaning behind "chicken man", curious if the drawers in "plaid rhino" pulled out, and desperately wanted to know if the tin cans in Lines of Communication really worked as amplifiers—the taller ones actually stood on tip-toe and spoke into them from a safe distance.

The Topeka Competition is fun for Library staff. There's a huge surprise factor when hiring an outside juror—typically a visual arts professor, museum professional or well-established artist working in similar media—to pick the work and award prizes. We never know what will be in the exhibit until selections are revealed, which allows us to become part of the audience alongside our customers, heartily discussing what moved or confused us, what cracked us up and what flat-out surprised us.

The Topeka Competition 29 closes tonight at 9PM. We'll be down for a couple weeks installing the next show, Africa Everyday, which opens January 15, 2010. Remember, if you missed this show or want to revisit past exhibits you can catch them all at our Flickr page.

Many OverDrive Music titles can be transferred to Apple devices (where permitted by the record label) using the Transfer Wizard in OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.3 (or newer). For more information on transferring OverDrive Music titles to Apple devices, click here.

In order to use OverDrive Music titles on a device other than an iPod® or an iPhone™, the device must play DRM-protected Windows Media content, and either support the bit rate of 64kbps or be able to transcode 64kbps files to a supported bit rate. You may want to check device documentation to determine if a device supports DRM-protected Windows Media content at 64kbps.

How do I transfer OverDrive Music titles to a portable device?

Transfer a title to a supported portable device using the Transfer Wizard in OverDrive Media Console v3.0 (or newer) as follows…

If you have not already done so, verify that the permissions on the title allow you to transfer the file to your supported portable device (record labels may opt to disable this functionality for certain devices). For instructions on verifying device compatibility, click here.
Connect your portable player to your computer.

To which devices can I transfer OverDrive Video titles?

OverDrive Video titles play on a variety of devices including Pocket PCs, Portable Media Centers, and devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 (or newer).

You may want to check device documentation to determine if your device supports DRM-protected Windows Media Video content at 500kbps.

How do I transfer a video to a portable device?

Transfer a title to a supported portable device using the Transfer Wizard in OverDrive Media Console v3.0 (or newer) as follows…

If you have not already done so, verify that the permissions on the title allow you to transfer the file to your supported portable device (publishers may opt to disable this functionality for certain devices). For instructions on verifying device compatibility, click here.
Connect your portable player to your computer.
In OverDrive Media Console, highlight the title you wish to transfer and click the 'Transfer' button.
The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is displayed.
Verify that the correct title is displayed on the first screen of the Transfer Wizard and click 'Next'.
The Transfer Wizard will search for a connected portable device.
If your device is not detected, the Transfer Wizard will display a message stating that 'no portable players could be found.' Click here for more information about why your portable player could not be found.
If your device is detected the 'Confirm' screen is displayed.
In the 'Confirm' dialog box, select the Part(s) you want to transfer by checking the box(es) next to the Part name(s).
Click 'Next' to begin transferring the file(s) to your device.
When the file transfer is complete, the Transfer Wizard displays a 'success' message.
Click 'Finish' to exit the Transfer Wizard.
You may now disconnect your portable device.
