Happy 2024, readers! I hope you’re all finding fun new reads and that you participated in our Winter Reading Challenge! If so, pause here to fill that stunning new mug of yours with your hot beverage of choice to enjoy while you read this post. As tradition demands for us to begin each new year with resolutions of change and improvement, I’ve assembled a list of three new books (really new, they’re all on order – put yourself on hold for them now!) where our protagonists go through some changes that may or may not turn out to be for the best.

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland

In The Invocations we meet three young female protagonists all hurt and permanently altered by the pain they bear. Zara’s older sister was the victim of a serial killer targeting witches and she will give anything to try and bring her back. Jude made a bad deal with a dark character that has tethered what’s left of her soul to demons and keeps her in chronic pain. Finally, there is Emer, a curse writer on the run from her past that is intent on hunting her down. The three unite in a dark, witchy tale of female rage that goes far beyond a serial killer mystery.

Krystal Sutherland has done it again. Her writing explodes off the page with a quick-paced, stress-inducing (in the best way), horror-packed story. I do want to offer a warning that this contains elements of body horror, so be aware of your triggers and proceed accordingly. Read this one with ALL the lights on!

The Colliding Worlds of Mina Lee by Ellen Oh

Mina Lee expects to have an average day as she heads to SAT prep classes. That, however, is not what she gets. Instead, she gets transported into her own web comic, which is apparently part of the multiverse. Sounds super cool, right? Who wouldn’t want to hang out with characters you’ve dreamed up? Well, what if those characters have a mind of their own and turn evil? Mina’s story is the case, and she must try to save everyone if she is going to find a way home. She does still want to go home, right?

This is a surprisingly emotional read despite all the fun plot twists and premises. Mina has a lot of grief to process but thanks to Ellen Oh’s spectacular writing, it remains an adventurous read. Keep the tissues close at hand!

We Got the Beat by Jenna Miller

Can friends who have turned to enemies be friends again? Or maybe more than friends?

Jordan has prepared herself for the coveted editor position, even though she’s only a junior, certain it will be hers. Only she’s passed over for editor and handed the volleyball beat? It’s like they don’t even know her. To make matters worse, her arch nemesis, her ex-best friend Mackenzie is the captain of the volleyball team. But Jordan is nothing if not professional.

This book has all the out, loud and proud queer representation and I am here for it. It will make you laugh and want to roll your eyes at all the drama. Jenna Miller has delivered a slice of my one of my favorite YA tropes: friends-to-lovers. Best enjoyed with an ‘80s soundtrack!

Put these on hold and peruse some of our other new books coming soon!

I love a story set in an expansive world with complex characters and a plot that keeps me hooked from the very first page. Epic fantasy always fills this need.

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

Arawiya is a country where magic has disappeared and women are expected to be subservient. Defying the norms, Zafira disguises herself as a man known only as the Hunter. She hunts in a the cursed forest near her home to provide food to those who need it. When a mysterious stranger asks Zafira to locate a lost artifact that could bring back magic, failure is not an option. During this quest she encounters Nasir, the assassin prince who has been ordered to find and kill the Hunter and bring the artifact back to his father, the cruel sultan. Neither is what the other expected. They must overcome more than just each other to survive their journey.

We Hunt the Flame is the first of a duology that does a wonderful job of showing different perspectives on love and family. As Zafira’s story plays out, we see her love for her family as well as the people around her. You are able to feel the beauty and heartbreak of love right along with her as she walks through her journey. Nasir’s story shows the struggle of a son who wants nothing more than to receive love and approval from his father. He will do anything to earn it, even when it is to his own detriment.

If you like this duology, check out Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson.

Spice Road by Maiya Ibrahim

Imani lives in a world where spice provides access to magical abilities and monsters lurk around every corner. Thanks to spice, she is able to wield her dagger better than anyone. She knows the secret of spice cannot spread beyond her city or they risk the wrath of the Great Spirit. However, her accomplishments are overshadowed by her brother’s theft of spice, his disappearance and his assumed death.

Imani discovers her brother may be alive and spreading spice to other parts of the world. She must find him and bring him back before he places everything and everyone she cares about in danger.

The first book of a trilogy, Spice Road is a great read for anyone who likes books with unique views on magic. Magic is tied to the gift of the Great Spirit and Imani’s city of Qalia is home to the source. In Qalia, magic allows people to accomplish great things, but it also comes with great risk. Magical obsession can make people do dangerous things.

If you like this story, check out The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

As young witches, Safiya and Iseult have amazing abilities. However, those abilities cannot protect them from the trouble that always seems to find them. With a Bloodwitch on their tails, the danger is greater than they have ever experienced.

Merik is the prince of a country with a sick king. His sister is the heir who could bring the country to ruin. When a chance encounter brings Safiya, Iseult and Merik together, they discover they are unlikely allies. The fight for what each wants will bring them against foes of every class and everyone is fighting to win.

Truthwitch is the first in the Witchlands series. The friendship between Safiya and Iseult is so beautiful to follow. They care deeply for each other and will do anything to protect each other. Merik just wants to prove there are better ways to lead a country than what his sister wants. In so many ways these characters are completely different, but they are alike in the ways that matter. The banter between all the characters is one of my favorite aspects of this book. It enriches the story and gives their relationships a depth that brings the characters to life.

Jump into Nick’s life undercover in the witness protection program. Being in the witness protection program comes with a lot of rules. Things like not telling people your real name or where you’re really from. Staying out of trouble is also important.

Paris Secord, AKA DJ ParSec, was on the brink of national success with her music career until she was murdered. Her fans – the ParSec Nation – are watching her friends make accusations against each other as they fling potential motives publicly.

The Getaway

Here is your warning – this book is most definitely horror. Horror of the Black Mirror flavor. The get in your mind type of thriller.

In The Getaway things aren’t going so great in the world and Karloff County is an oasis from the difficult negative events. However, it’s only an oasis for certain people. Jay’s a high school senior who lives and works in the theme park in Karloff County. Along with his friends and coworkers, they live pretty well serving the park’s rich customers.

The story kicks off when someone goes missing and only Jay and his friends seem to care. It falls to them to figure out what is happening. As more rich move to Karloff to live in this oasis, more of the current occupants disappear. There is also a big change in the way the park employees are treated.

This book comes at you with multiple perspectives, but you’ll spend most of it with Jay. You’ll also get perspectives from his friends Zeke and Connie. I’ll give you another warning that this horror is not regarding things that go bump in the night but the worst humanity has to offer. Read this one.

Standalone novels are amazing, particularly when you want to read something new, but don’t want to commit to reading a full series. Check out a few of my favorite standalone novels.

XOXO by Axie Oh

Jenny wants nothing more than to pursue her dreams of playing the cello and getting into one of the top music schools in the country. Then she meets Jaewoo and spends a fun, exciting evening with him. He then disappears.

Months later, Jenny and her mother travel to South Korea to take care of Jenny’s grandmother and enroll Jenny in an amazing arts school. Imagine her surprise when she discovers Jaewoo is not only a student at the same school, but he is also a member of one of the biggest K-pop bands in the world. As Jenny and Jaewoo navigate their growing attraction to each other, they have to figure out how to traverse the biggest hurdle: Jaewoo is not allowed to date. Can they find love without giving up on their dreams?

XOXO is perfect if you love reading about K-pop, forbidden love and people discovering who they are. Jenny takes us on her journey through a new country and new culture, with descriptions of Korea and Korean food that made me want to visit. Jaewoo is a mysterious stranger with inexplicable electric magnetism Jenny just can’t ignore. I love that this book dives into the awkwardness of finding love when it is least expected.

If you like XOXO, be sure to check out Susan Lee’s Seoulmates.

They Wish They Were Us by Jessica Goodman

Jill knew her life would never be the same when her best friend Shaila died freshman year and Shaila’s boyfriend, Graham, confessed to the murder. Three years later, Jill has worked hard to rebuild her life. She’s a senior at the prestigious Gold Coast Prep and a member of the Players, the school’s exclusive society.

Jill starts receiving text messages proclaiming Graham’s innocence. She needs to find out the truth about what happened the night Shaila died. But can she do it without giving up everything she has worked so hard to accomplish?

They Wish They Were Us has the drama of Gossip Girl mixed with a good murder mystery. This story shows even if someone’s life looks perfect, they can have struggles no one else knows about. Jill grapples with the knowledge that everything she knows could be wrong. She also has to navigate the difficulties of high school, which makes her story feel relatable.

If you enjoy They Wish They Were Us, check out The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas.

The Upside of Falling by Alex Light

After her parents divorce, Becca no longer believes in love. When her ex-best friend makes fun of her for not having a boyfriend, she pretends she’s been secretly dating someone. Brett sweeps in to save the day. He’s perfect to be her fake boyfriend. Brett’s super popular, captain of the football team, and just happens to want to get people off his back for him not dating. As they navigate their fake relationship, they start to face the biggest question of all: can something that started out fake become something real?

The Upside of Falling is a the total package for anyone who likes fake relationships, awkward exchanges, and discovering people are not exactly what you thought they were. Becca is a shy and serious bookworm, who loves to lose herself in a book. Brett is quick-witted, while also being amazingly considerate. Their banter makes this book fun to read. It also has amazing substance as they both try to figure out how to navigate the challenges of high school and family expectations.

If you like the Upside of Falling, check out Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Happy Summer Friends! June is a month of celebration – we celebrate Pride and the freedom to be ourselves in so many beautiful ways. I want to honor that and call attention to another freedom we celebrate this month, specifically on June 19. Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day and Black Independence Day, celebrates the emancipation of African American slaves. In addition to celebrating freedom, I encourage you to educate yourself on the past and present forms of inequality, and the ways freedom is still strived for.

Happy reading friends!

She has a whole trip planned with her family’s segregation-era Greenbook for Negro Motorists for summer break. Then there is a protest where Kezi is mistakenly arrested. She doesn’t come out alive. Kezi’s face is splashed all over the media. It’s a tragedy, she was one of the good ones.

Kezi’s sisters, Genny and Happi, are struggling with grief, guilt and anger in their own ways. The story follows their perspectives as the sisters, Happi begrudgingly and Genny eagerly, take Kezi’s planned trip with Kezi’s best friend to honor her memory. Along the way they find out they didn’t know her as well as they thought they did, or each other for that matter. Through the highs and lows, they find themselves and their lost sister in ways they never expected.

Rus is feeling powerless and decides to take back his voice and power through the act of kneeling during the National Anthem at the game. This escalates matters and makes Rus a lightning rod for the racist hate and frustration the rest of the town has accumulated. He struggles with his own family who just want him to be safe, which they equate with silence. The challenges the Rus and the town face are real and this is a difficult book to read, but it is worth the time.

Buford’s writing is inspired by headlines and tackles more issues than racism. It also dealswith poverty, food deserts, bullying and child neglect. This book can be a triggering read so prepare yourself and be ready for the strong emotions it brings.

This story broke my heart, but it is so beautifully written and is such an important story that I couldn’t leave it out.

Justyce McAllister is incredible. Brilliant. Hardworking. Ivy-league bound. But none of that mattered to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. His black skin and hoodie meant he was doing something criminal, right? Following this encounter with racial profiling, Justyce struggles with his identity. To work through this, he begins writing letters in a journal to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This helps him process his thoughts about being Black and dealing with racism, toxic masculinity and police brutality.

Justyce and his friend Manny have serious discussions about racism and other issues that are really well written and rewarding to read. They both share the experience of an elite education, which causes friction in their neighborhood with their other friends. It also makes them the target of microaggressions and jokes at their school. Justyce’s story is one of being Black in America and finding a place in the world.

This book contains explicit verbal and physical violence and brutality committed by police. So please be prepared for that. It also contains strong themes of overt racism.

I want to add in a disclaimer that as a white person, I cannot begin to understand what it is to experience racism in all of its forms. That being said, I recommend reading these books as well as this list I have assembled. Happy Juneteenth, y’all!

“Only those you trust can betray you,” said author Terry Goodkind. Check out these great books with betrayal at the heart of the story.

All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody & C. L. Herman

High magick is incredibly powerful and whoever controls it can greatly increase their power in the world. Every 20 years in the city of Ilvernath, seven families each choose a champion to compete in a secret tournament. The prize for the winner? Their family gets to control the city’s store of high magick for the next 20 years. The price for losing? Death.

However, this year someone wrote a book exposing the tournament to the world, revealing secrets and thrusting the champions into the spotlight. When the tournament starts, the line between friend and enemy may be thinner than any of the champions realize and betrayal is inevitable.

The first in a duology, All of Us Villains felt like The Hunger Games with magic. You’ll discover each champion’s reason to fight or, in some cases, why they never wanted to fight. Each champion feels the weight of their families expectations or lack thereof. The ending made me want to immediately pick up the sequel All of Our Demise.

If you enjoy the All of Us Villains duology, check out Amanda Foody’s series The Shadow Game, which starts with the book Ace of Shades.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Five years ago, Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who later killed himself. Or so everyone thinks, except for Pip. She can’t shake the feeling that Sal is innocent. Determined to prove it, Pip looks into the case for her final senior high school project. As she unearths secrets and uncovers possible betrayals, she finds someone wants to keep everything hidden and Pip may be the next on their list.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is the first in a trilogy. With numerous twists and turns, this book kept me reading long into the night. There are so many suspects and secrets it’s hard to pin down who actually did it. I felt was rooting for Pip and encouraging her to keep going, even when this book takes some dark turns. Pip’s determination to find the truth and set things right pulled me in.

If you like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, check out the sequel Good Girl, Bad Blood.

Thorn by Intisar Khanani

Trapped in a royal life of torment from her family and contempt from her court, Princess Alyrra dreams of a normal, happy life. When Alyrra is forced into an engagement to Prince Kestrin, she feels like she’s lost any hope for a better future. Betrayed by a former friend, Alyrra loses everything in a moment and she knows the fate of the country is at risk. She must choose to live her life as a normal girl or give that up for the sake of her country.

Thorn is the first in The Dauntless Path series. It shows how hard life can be and the dangers that are all around. This book also shows there is always hope, even in the darkest of times. Alyrra’s determination to help those around her and to claim a future for herself is inspiring. I was cheering for her all along the way.

If you enjoy Thorn, continue The Dauntless Path series in the second book The Theft of Sunlight.

Add a red “Box” and an orange “Tube” and red “TEXT” to your design and resize them so that they assemble into a keychain or charm about 6-8 centimeters long and 2 centimeters wide. So the text is raised up from the base, the text height should be between 8 and 10, and the base height should be 3 or 4.

Export your design as .STL and open in Cura.

Adjust the Resolution. Be sure that Support and Adhesion are NOT enabled.

Slice the file, and “Save to Disk” to use a USB memory stick to transfer your .gcode file to the 3D printer.

Online gaming used to be strictly a hobby for teens looking for an escape during their downtime. Now it’s a booming industry that appeals to gamers of every age and talent. Gamers can monetize their gaming through live-stream pages, and anyone with talent can work to develop new games in the tech industry.

However, as with any field in the tech industry, there are some serious drawbacks to the culture surrounding video gaming. It’s a male dominated field that is not only unfriendly to female gamers and developers but can actually result in harassment and bullying, which contributes to the low numbers of women in tech and the rising suicide rates among teens.

The following titles take a dive deep into the highs and lows of being a gamer in the 2020s.

Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith

Divya and Aaron are gamers with a capital G. Online Divya is D1V and the queen of Reclaim the Sun, the hottest game online. Aaron plays online games and writes them for a local developer. Somehow they both end up on the same remote planet in Reclaim the Sun. They lean on each other to tackle the game and the legion of trolls trying to harass Divya into leaving the game.

In real life Divya is using her online fame to score sponsorships to help her mom pay the rent. Aaron is at odds with his mom, who wants him to stop gaming and become a doctor like her. Soon the online and real worlds collide when the trolls begin doxxing Aaron and Divya through real world campaigns, threatening their futures and even their lives.

This book tackles the difficult conversation around the realities of sexual and racial harassment happening within gaming communities, especially live-stream gaming. The author does an excellent job of showing the wonderful positive parts of online as well as the painful negatives.

Fan the Fame by Anna Priemaza

Lainey’s hateful brother is a massively popular video game streamer and she’s over it. To everyone else he’s funny and charming, but behind closed doors he’s a sexist jerk. She’s ready to show the world how awful her brother is.

To expose her brother Lainey enlists the help of fellow gamers SamTheBrave and ShadowWillow. They are in the same orbit as Lainey’s brother. She plans to release a video of one of her brother’s hate filled rants. The problem is that doing so will put Sam and Shadow directly in the path of the fire she’s about to unleash.

Fan the Fame explores the misogyny, Internet fame and call-out culture that surrounds online gaming. The world building of the game and the development of the characters is well done. The author injects the story with their own experiences in a real way that will resonate with gaming fans.

Warcross by Marie Lu

While hacking into a game, Warcross, to track down virtual criminals, Emika makes a mistake out of desperation that reveals her identity to millions of viewers. She’s then summoned by Hideo Tanaka, the billionaire inventor of Warcross, to enter the high-profile gaming world and find an elusive hacker called Zero.

Warcross explores a futurist world where gaming is a part of every day life and gamers use a brain-computer interface to play. This future society is well developed and the world building is incredible. It’s full of mystery and suspense with a dash of romance and SciFi to it. Described by Publishers Weekly as “The Hunger Games meets World of Warcraft,” it’s easy to see this world as a possible future with a dystopian flare.

Mystery and fantasy are amazing genres that are even better together. Check out my top picks for mysterious fantasy!

League of Liars by Astrid Scholte

Following the death of his mother, Cayder is determined to see justice for all illegal users of magic. As an apprentice to one of the top public defenders Cayder gets to see inside the justice system. He learns how the defense works, which will help him be a better prosecutor in the future. When Cayder meets some of the criminals he is supposed to help, he discovers things aren’t as simple as he thought. They each have their secrets they need to protect.

League of Liars was a really fun read that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. Discovering new things about each character’s past and how their actions affected the present made them feel more real and relatable. Cayder’s growth as a character is particularly interesting. He starts out with such a black and white perspective on the world and grows to see all the shades of gray. I loved the mystery about where magic came from that’s woven throughout the story as Cayder struggles to reconcile what he thinks he knows with the information he learns.

If you like League of Liars, the sequel is scheduled to come out in 2024. For more books by Astrid Scholte, check out her debut novel Four Dead Queens.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

In a world filled with strange abilities, members of the Order of Babel have wealth, power and prestige. Severin was born into this life and then it was stolen from him. He is determined to get it back. When the Order gives him a mission Severin knows failure is not an option. Working with an unlikely group of allies, they will do whatever it takes to succeed because the reward is everything they ever wanted.

Chokshi’s beautiful writing lushly describes the setting in 1889. It was an absolute pleasure to follow this band of misfits. The banter between the characters is funny and makes the friendships feel real. Filled with twists and turns, this book kept me guessing from beginning to end. This is the first book in a trilogy. If you love magic, history and a good heist, this is the book for you.

To continue the story check out the sequel The Silvered Serpents. To read more by Roshani Chokshi I also recommend her novel The Star-Touched Queen.

Belladonna by Adalyn Grace

Following the death of her parents, Signa was raised by a number of guardians, who each died untimely deaths. The Hawthornes take her in to their home while mourning the death of their own matriarch. The deceased mother’s spirit appears to Signa for help. Death himself has been a constant in Signa’s life and she can inexplicably see and talk to him. When they realize their connection may be deeper, Signa knows he may be just the help she needs.

This story was stunningly beautiful and the ending left me wanting more. The personification of Death as an individual, particularly a sympathetic one, was unexpected. His interactions with Signa are fun to read and give both characters a greater depth. Signa focuses throughout the story on wanting to become a proper lady. Without someone to guide her, she struggles to learn, which makes her relatable. Following Signa through her investigation into who is behind the poisoning is a mystery that kept me reading right up to the very end.

The sequel to Belladonna, Foxglove, is scheduled for release in August 2023. If you would like to read more Adalyn Grace books, check out her series, All the Stars and Teeth.
