Local Art Appreciation Class Gets To ‘The Root of All’

For the first time, Laura Dalrymple shares her students' responses—with their permission—to art from the Library's permanent collection.

First up: Barbara Waterman-Peters' MWS 282: The Root of All.
Laura Dalrymple, Allen County Community College art instructor, likes bringing her students to the Sabatini Art Gallery.

Class tours give students critical facetime with art in a "living" context, something with which texbook reproductions can't compete. Pieces are seen full-scale, texture and detail are inescapable and the experience is collective. With more than one perspective, discussion is richer and people learn from each other.

This year, ACCC's Art Appreciation students visited Recent Acquisitions: New Work from the Library's Permanent Collection, which ran September 4 – October 16, 2009. From roughly 70 works, Dalrymple asked her class to write responses to the pieces that most captured their attention. Below are excerpts from Dalrymple's student essays about Barbara Waterman-Peters' drawing, MWS 282: The Root of All.

We're interested in what you think, too, so comment away! To see the entire exhibit, click here.

"To me, the darkness depicts the typical female life. Emotionally a woman's life is hard in many ways. Quite often a woman is subject to expectations that have been held for thousands of years. The harsh lines in the drawing to me symbolize the life of hard work that women are expected to do throughout their lives. The wild red lines in the drawing seem to dictate the anger that a lot of women feel within themselves from the dictatorship that men seem to hold over them. The apples in the drawing seem to symbolize the curse of Eve that every woman feels throughout her life." –A.W.

"The colors and facial expressions in the artwork tell the story. When I look at this piece, I think of the characters in the picture showing sadness and terror. The dark colors used with bright oranges symbolizes death or hell coming to get them. It seems like the artist was trying to pursue the feeling of when you are trapped, sad or even frightened." –M.B.

"I get a feeling of inescapability from the darkness that is present. It makes me feel as though she is being suffocated from lack of oxygen. I interpret the roots to symbolize her sin from keeping her from escaping the darkness and that the woman on the rightis helplessly trying to escape by cutting the roots with the pickax in her hand. All together, these drawings strike emotions of terror, a sense of sinister presence and helplessness." –J.H.

"The pure skill is the first thing I noticed. I have great respect for anyone talented in the arts, and this woman artist clearly deserves recognition. All of the line work is deliberate and vibrant. It is a somber, dark and painful composition. It expresses anger and suffering. It may stand for struggle in families and relationships, as there are children and adults represented." –J.C.

"The figures appear to writhe in agony. Several show their teeth. They're held prisoner by the roots of a large apple tree. One of the women figues almost looks like she's on a roller coaster going down a huge hill. Her hair is blowing upward. This drawing reminds me of a sick carousel cycle." –S.M.

"I had no idea—NO IDEA—that Kansas could produce such amazing works of art. The one most of us found so fascinating was this double drawing of a woman crying out in anguish, trapped in what appeared to be a horrid tree root. I saw little children in the grasp of some sort of tree-monster and a mother powerless to stop them." –B.L.

Thank you to Laura Dalrymple and the Allen County Community College Art Appreciation class for sharing your thoughts with us and our readers.

A Surreal Journey

One night while listening on his ham radio for a conversation all Joaquin could hear was static then, in the midst of the noise, he heard a voice. It was just for a moment, but it was enough to frighten him to his very core. This was just the beginning for Joaquin as his world is about to change.

Joaquin always had an obsession with sound and now as an adult he hosts his own radio show where callers phone in with peculiar and scary stories. Because of the growing popularity of the show it’s moving to Texas, and the move is not only stirring memories in Joaquin about his dead friend but even worse, his sanity may be slipping.

In Ghost Radio by Leopoldo Gout, some of the callers might be lying while others seem to be telling the truth, but it doesn’t matter because Joaquin finds that he is beginning to be pulled into some of the stories and begins to experience them first hand. This is a surreal nightmare where dreams and reality blend into one, and Joaquin must confront his past in order to save his future.
