Shot with the newly bought Fuji X100 that I took for a spin whilst on holiday, sailing off the coast of Sicily with Pops and Scott.

Battle Lines Etched on Marines’ Faces by Claire Felicie. Arnold, 21

I dabbled in Triptychs when I was performing a typology on App Developers. The result was a quirky piece of people content in their profession. Claire Felicie has taken the style a million steps further and has proceeded to shoot portraits of Dutch marines before during and after their deployment in Afghanistan.

The result is an incredible story that incorporates subtle differences in its narrative. When one looks at the images, the initial portrait shows a man happy in his body; a slight smirk, a hint of naïvety, perhaps even a trace of cocky-ness.

The second image, taken during the third month their deployment, shows a soldier focused and battle ready. This image is probably the most symbolic purely because Claire wanted to show that these were not men of war, but rather simple brave boys. The soldiers look battle hardened and ready, weathered from events and constant pressure.

By the third, the marine has been forever altered by the events witnessed on the battlefield; the expression on their faces show a soldier who has lost their childhood wonder and taken a crash course into adulthood.

I came across a set of video’s directed by Rik Mereki focused around travel. His team of 3 travelled 44 days around 11 countries, taking a total of 18 flights covering 38 thousand miles to produce these breathtaking movies. It’s what wow was made for.
