Discussion

High pressure builds into the region today and it will remain in control right through Monday before shifting off the coast. By the middle of next week, a nor’easter is likely to form near the Mid-Atlantic coastline. It is too early to say how much, if any, impact this system may have on the immediate I-95 corridor - it could miss us just to the east.

Discussion

A cold front crossed the region overnight and high pressure will build in as we close out the work week. This high pressure system should stay in control right through the upcoming weekend and then it will shift off the east coast early next week. By the middle of next week, a strong nor’easter will form near the Mid-Atlantic coastline, but it is a little too early to say how much of an impact it could have in the I-95 corridor.

Discussion

Low pressure will form along an approaching cold front and the result will be more rain in the I-95 corridor from DC-to-Philly-to-NYC - some of which is likely to be heavy at times. The combination of yesterday’s warm frontal rains and today’s cold front/low pressure generated rainfall will likely amount to two inches or more in parts of the region before it winds down later tonight. Clearing skies will set in on Thursday along with breezy and colder conditions and it should stay chilly and dry for the subsequent few days.

Discussion

A soaking rain event is now underway in the Mid-Atlantic region and by the time Thursday morning rolls around much of the I-95 corridor will likely experience 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain from a combination of frontal systems and low pressure. A warm front to our south will push northward today generating periods of rain or drizzle in the area and then a cold front will close in on the east coast later Wednesday and low pressure will form along the boundary zone. Periods of rain will continue on Wednesday and some of the rain is likely to fall heavily at times. Clearing skies will return on Thursday along with a noticeable chilly breeze and it’ll stay chilly and dry as we close out the work week.

Discussion

High pressure will push off the coast later today and this will open the door for a soaking rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic region over the next couple of days. A warm front to our south will push northward by tomorrow and a cold front will approach on Wednesday. The combination of the two fronts should easily generate more than an inch of rain in the I-95 corridor before clearing sets in for the latter part of the week.

Discussion

After a very cold start to the day, temperatures will moderate a bit later this afternoon compared to recent days. More noticeable improvement in the temperature department will occur on Thursday as high temperatures approach or even slightly surpass the 60 degree mark in much of the I-95 corridor. It’ll turn even milder on Friday – likely the warmest day of the week – but a cold front will pass through by early Saturday setting the stage for a downward trend in temperatures this weekend.

Discussion

The coldest air mass of the season so far will only slowly modify over the next couple of days and tonight is likely to be the coldest night during this current cold snap. By Thursday afternoon, however, there will be noticeable warming in the Mid-Atlantic region. It’ll stay quite mild on Friday as well - probably the warmest day of the week - but then another cold frontal passage will generate a downward trend in temperatures this weekend. That front could cause some light shower activity in the region as it presses through later Friday night into early Saturday.

Discussion

The coldest air mass since early April will keep temperatures well below normal around here today as we begin the new work week. It’ll remain quite chilly on Tuesday and Wednesday as well, but each day will be favorable for traveling with dry conditions throughout much of the eastern US. Milder air pushes into the Mid-Atlantic region by Turkey Day and it’ll stay quite mild on Friday as well, but then another cold front will usher in noticeably colder weather for the weekend.

Elsewhere, much of the Upper Midwest was pounded over the weekend with a one-two punch of accumulating snow and some bitter cold air. Chicago received slightly more than 11 inches of snow - their biggest November snowfall in 120 years. Looking ahead to next week around here, it likes like there will be another cold shot early next week and perhaps even a threat of snow in the Northeast US as we begin December.

Discussion

Yesterday's soaking rainfall has ushered in a pattern change and the next several days will be at or below normal in the Mid-Atlantic region as we head into Thanksgiving week. Noticeably cooler air has moved into the region as we end the work week and the coldest air mass since last April will push in for Sunday and Monday. Slow moderation in temperatures are likely next Tuesday and Wednesday and the weather should be quite favorable for traveling with dry conditions in much of the eastern US. Milder conditions are likely late next week and weekend including on Turkey Day when temperatures should climb well up into the 50's before the arrival of more cold air at the end of the month or early in the new month of December.

Elsewhere, the first snowstorm of the season will hit the Upper Midwest this weekend. The region from Madison, Wisconsin to Detroit, Michigan will receive accumulating snow and Chicago, Illinois could end up with its biggest "November" snowstorm ever on the order of 6-12 inches. This same storm will pound parts of the central Plains during the next 12-24 hours with some significant snowfall including, for example, much of the state of Iowa.

Discussion

A strong cold front is pushing through the area today and it’ll generate occasional showers in the Mid-Atlantic region and perhaps even an isolated thunderstorm or two. Colder air pushes in for the end of the work week following today’s frontal passage and then even colder air will arrive on Sunday behind a mid-weekend secondary cold frontal passage. In fact, Sunday promises to be the coldest day of the season so far in the Mid-Atlantic region and there will be a noticeable NW wind to make it feel even colder than the actual air temperatures. The early season unusual chill will continue on Monday as well to begin the new work week.
