“I always paint the subject matter that most relates to my current state of mind. Consciousness Arising is a painting that came about when I noticed that I seemed to have made a sudden spiritual jump along the way. And it allowed me to notice that others around me had as well.

I wanted to paint a testament of my experience; this man’s direct engagement with the viewer is the result. The difference in the model’s eye color was one way I chose to express ‘awakening.’ The background was painted intuitively with what we call happy mistakes that I let remain without adjustment. The painting wanted to be what it wanted to be.”

Sarah B. Hansen, Susan Luckey Higdon, Judy Hoiness, Anne Gibson, Taylor Manoles and Dee McBrien-Lee, have been juried into the High Desert Museum’s Art in the West 2026 invitational juried exhibit.

Art in the West is an annual juried exhibition and silent auction featuring traditional and contemporary art that celebrates the landscapes, wildlife, people, cultures and history of the High Desert—a region that stretches from the eastern slope of the Cascades and the Sierra to the Wyoming Basin and Colorado Plateau.

Featuring more than 120 artworks, the entire collection will be on exhibit at the High Desert Museum beginning Saturday, July 18. The collection will be available for viewing through our online auction page beginning July 13. The auction goes live at 9:00 am July 18.

Dee McBrien-Lee‘s artwork Coffee Talk, was juried into the Acrylic International Biennial Juried Exhibition to be held at the Kenosha Public Museum in Wisconsin, August 15-November 21. The exhibition is held in partnership with the International Society of Acrylic Painters (ISAP).

45 original acrylic paintings were chosen out of several hundred entries by juror Dan Simoneau. The exhibition spotlights work that demonstrates the variety of subjects, styles and techniques possible in the acrylic medium and the diversity and skill of artists working in acrylic today.

Born in Arizona and later raised in Minnesota, Taylor has inhabited many different types of landscapes. Her love of the outdoors and desire to paint drove her to pursue an art education degree at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. After teaching middle school art for one year, she decided to pursue her own artwork full time.

Taylor’s work has appeared in various publications including Artists & Illustrators and has been on the cover of Southwest Art Magazine. Her work has gained a committed following in the Pacific Northwest with various shows, and she has become widely known through her online platforms. In 2023, her piece Painted Hills won the Curator’s Choice Award at the High Desert Museum’s annual invitational exhibit, Art in the West.

Helen Brown‘s and Judy Hoiness‘ paintings were among the 80 works selected by juror, Stan Kurth, to be included in the Watercolor Society of Oregon’s 2026 Spring Experimental Exhibition. Kurth selected from 231 paintings submitted by 133 artists.
The exhibit will be on display at the Linfield University Library (900 SE Baker St., McMinnville, OR, 97128) from April 9 to May 10.
