I was doing a random search on “Jamaica” and I came across your post and I just had to say something. I am Jamaican and I can tell you exactly what she was saying…”Oh hi Auntie Mareece. It’s Deandra just calling to tell you that I got my subjects but I’ll call back later since I didn’t get you now.” Ever heard of a wrong number?? It’s not right to assume and then post this as if it really was a factual scam.

The number came up while I was in a meeting with my boss. I ignored the call and did a quick Google search and learned that this is a pretty common scam. They will either call and try to get you to call them back, thereby supposedly profiting off of a long distance scam that will charge your cell provider for calling that number. Or, they will speak to you and try to phish info out of you.

They make a good point of the uselessness of these signs beyond focusing your impatience as you wait on the platform. Last night I stood at the train steps leading up to the 6 in the Bronx. In front of me was a bus stop. I thought, “it would be nice to see that sign that shows when the next train might come so I know if I should wait for the bus down here or go for the train up there.”

In 2007, the New York City Transit Authority began installing LED signs on subway platforms that display estimated wait times for arriving trains. Unfortunately the information is little more than trivia: except for a few stations, it is only visible to travelers after they’ve paid their fare, so the data has little bearing on commuter decision-making.

This excerpt below is true, but the signs haven’t stopped this behavior so far.
