Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Review

I should start this review by stating that I am a huge Metal Gear fan. I have played most of the games in the series more than once with the exception of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. There isn’t a thing I don’t love about this series. From the gameplay to the story to the humor, I love it all. But saying I love it all does mean that I don’t recognize its flaws. STORY

The story of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance takes place 3 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4. Raiden (Jack) is working for the Maverick Enterprise to raise money for his family. Raiden’s main objective in this game is to take out the Desperados Enterprise, a company using war to get their way, all the while Raiden is forced to face is troubled past and his demons.

This story line, I personally feel, fits perfectly in with the Metal Gear universe. At times it can be corny, but the stories of this universe have always had some sort of cheese factor to them, and that’s what makes this series good. There are some little nods here and there that reconnect you with the ‘Solid’ series such as returning characters and dialog between characters.

VISUAL/AUDIO

Visually this game is beautiful. From the cutscenes to the gameplay, everything just looks gorgeous. At times this game was breathtaking. Everything just looks so crisp and clear that it really does remind you where we’ve come in video games. You can see every bit of detail in Raiden’s suit and your bosses. If this is what this game looks like, I cannot wait to see what happens when the Fox Engine makes its debut. Very few times did I have frame dropping and if I did it was because I cut something into way too many pieces and

The sound of this game is another huge plus. With some of the things in the game bringing you back to the ‘Solid’ series like the kodec noises, being spotted by enemies, and returning voice actors. I will say that the one downside to this is that sometimes the voice acting from Quinton Flynn (Raiden) was a bit over the top at times. The soundtrack of this game is absolutely incredible. This game being very fast paced, the fast rock music was an excellent touch. Hearing these songs through out the game was a definite treat, especially when you get to the boss battles.

GAMEPLAY

This game is aesthetically very pleasing, but a game isn’t a good game with solid gameplay. Boy does this game bring it in this category. This is the first Metal Gear game not directed or developed by Kojima and is developed by Platinum Games. This company is known for making solid Hack and Slash games like Bayonetta and Madworld. When it comes to MGR:R this company does not disappoint here. The combat is comprised of heavy and light attacks. Stringing these together works seamlessly. There wasn’t anything more satisfying than damaging an enemy using your sword and then using ‘Blade Mode’ to finish your opponent off and ripping our their nano repair mechanism.

What a lot of people were upset about is this game being an action hack and slash and tarnishing the old games of stealth espionage. This game still works in stealth mechanics into by sneaking around in the tried and true cardboard box as well as the steel drum. The game does reward you for using stealth and will let you know when you should be using it.

The boss battles of this game are where the gameplay shines. Using the techniques you’ve learned to take out the bosses is extremely satisfying. But at times they can be repetitive and use stereotypical cheap boss moves like refilling their life a few times, but overall the gameplay shines in boss battles and really gets your adrenaline pumping.

WHAT THIS GAME DOES WELL

It’s hard to narrow down what this game well exactly, because this game did everything so well. From the story to the gameplay everything is just so tightly wrapped that it’s all done just incredible well. Just read whats above if you want to know what its done well.

WHERE THIS GAME FALLS SHORT

At times this game can be repetitive and for some people this may get old extremely quick. The only other reason why I would this game falls short is its run time. I beat this game on my first playthrough at 6 hours and 15 minutes but with all the collectables and VR missions there are to unlock , I am already well into my second playthrough.

On a side note, I preordered this game at Gamestop for the Gray Fox Cyborg Ninja costume, and it is still not available for the Xbox 360.

Closing statement

This game is a refreshing new start for the Metal Gear universe. It does not take away from the ‘Solid’ universe in anyway. I think it would be a shame for any big Metal Gear fan to skip out on this because they feel the “gameplay isn’t right”. This game is going to do for the MG what Mega Man X did for Mega Man. Hell at times I saw that this was exactly like Mega Man X. You work for Maverick Enterprises, the first level plays out just like the opening stage of MMX, and you collect your bosses’ weapons.

If you’re a Metal Gear fan like I am, it’s really in your best interest to play this game at least once. I can’t praise this game enough. Do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself.
