He left his village at eleven o’clock at night only to arrive in Lilongwe twelve full hours later. </p> <p>On the almost 100 kilometres from his village to the city, he runs the risk of getting caught by police, his bike and load confiscated. Marino’s actions are illegal under the 1997 Forestry Act prohibiting unsustainable charcoal trade. Stella Gama, Assistant Director at the Department of Forestry explains this is to protect future generations as “forest is endangered here in Malawi”. </p> <p>It is not an easy situation since “over 80% of Malawians depend on trees for their energy needs”. The population of Lilongwe needs people like Handle to provide for their daily energy needs as more than 50% of the population in Lilongwe now use charcoal as fuel.</p> <p>After selling his load to his buyer, Handle makes his way back to his village, empty racked and with a profit of 3000 Kwacha in pocket [the equivalent of a little over four USD].
