Eliz. Warren wants to cut student interest rates to near zero

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has introduced her first piece of legislation. It’s called the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act, and would reduce the rate students pay on federally-subsidized student loans for one year, from 3.4% to 0.75%.

Without congressional action, on July 1 the rate is set to double from 3.4% to 6.8%.

Warren brings up an interesting point – her bill simply asks students to pay the same rates that big banks pay for borrowing.

She’s literally just asking if college grads can get the same deal as bank CEOs. The exact same interest rate. Not even a bailout or anything fancy (pipe dreams!) - just the same interest rate.

Amazing.

“Worcester State University in Massachusetts, however, might have one of the most arresting fees. Students fortunate enough to be admitted face the challenge of paying the required tuition. But before they step foot on campus, they also will be hit with a fee to, well, step foot on campus. A portion of the school’s “parking/pedestrian fee” goes to the upkeep of the sidewalks on campus.”

When state funding to public colleges goes down, student fees go up! Another reason to fund public higher education.

Public Higher Education in Massachusetts and the Governor’s FY 2014 Budget

Public higher education has seen dramatic cuts over the past decade. State spending on higher education, including funding for the UMass system, Community Colleges and State Universities, declined 31 percent from FY 2001 to FY 2013 (adjusted for inflation). While state spending has gone down, the funding needs of these institutions did not. To make up for this shortfall, these systems consistently raised the price of student tuition and fees. This resulted in increases whereby state universities and UMass doubled student costs, while increases at community colleges were close behind.
