We associate it with people who we deem unconventional or incapable or who, plainly, do not fit in with the rest of us. Sometimes, though, outsiders claim to be best suited for certain roles. Think politicians; claiming to be a political outsider is not only a strong rhetorical move, but it is founded in a belief that bringing new ideas and perspectives to Washington will radically change it for the better.

Jonah Lehrer, in his new book Imagine: How Creativity Works, argues something similar; that separating yourself from the establishment and knowing ‘less’ is sometimes more beneficial and provides greater opportunity for success than working from within.

The following quote is from Imagine, where Lehrer discusses the research that backs up his claim. And more importantly, that creative genius often appears from those who step away from the action, ask the right questions, and push themselves outside of their comfort zone.

The world is full of natural outsiders, except we don’t call them outsiders; we refer to them as young people. The virtue of youth, after all, is that the young don’t know enough to be insiders, cynical with expertise. While such ignorance has all sorts of obvious drawbacks, it also comes with creative advantages, which is why so many fields, from physics to punk rock, have been defined by their most immature members. The young know less, which is why they often invent more.

In the video above, Lehrer expands on this point to the students of Willamette University at their Spring Commencement exercises.

Remember, be an outsider.

"Believe in your neighbors, your friends, your family, your community.

We know where we’ve been, what used to be, and, in some respects, who we are now.
We know what we like, what we dislike, and what’s important to us.

We don’t know where we’ll be, what will be, or who we’ll be.
We don’t know the people we’ll meet or the people we’ll lose.

What’s happened has happened and what will happen will.
To know our past is to know part of our future.

We can only ever know part of our story.
But our story requires us to continue.

Our story requires us to decide.
Our story requires us to succeed.
Our story requires us to begin.

Our story requires us to end.

The Need to Integrate

In the previous post, I discussed how the black-white color line has been embedded in American...

Where Do We Draw the (Color) Line?

Most attempts to explain the significance of Barack Obama’s election focus on an all-or-nothing...
