We’re almost ready for the parade tomorrow! We just reeaallly hope it doesn’t rain, that would be disastrous to our many cardboard and paper elements. The kids are going to sing and dance to our “Out of the box” theme, and hopefully impress the judges! We also hope to impress parade-watchers with our ingenuity of making our flyers into boxes, aren’t they cute? Flyers are much more fun and creative when they are made into other things, like boxes and paper airplanes. Everyone can find little ways like this to make the mundane aspects of life into spectacular aspects!

Your Trash is our Treasure- Thanks to a generous family in the area who is cleaning out an old house, we were able to acquire some new art materials. We received different types of paint, tarps, and other miscellaneous items that we can use for some of our classes and events. Some of materials may be a little rusty and dirty around the edges, but we will surely put them to good use. We are so grateful for the continuous generosity and support from the community.

Came across this picture on Pinterest and didn’t realize that there were so many shapes that you can make with shadows! It is amazing how creative you can be by just using your hands and ten fingers. Art is everywhere and people should learn to appreciate its diversity. There are tons of little munchkins that are afraid of the dark. So, how about teaching them to turn their fears into something positive and fun like this!

The ECCOTA interns would like to announce a new program this summer called ECCOTA Extended. The goal of this program is to reach out to the community, beyond the walls of ECCOTA’s location in downtown Ridgway, and share our love of art. The interns want to offer their service and support with existing youth programs in the community, while helping others become aware of the programs that ECCOTA also has to offer throughout the summer. We want to build relationships with others who share our same interests and want to make a difference in the lives of others. Here is the current schedule of programs that we are assisting with so far:

Monday, July 16th at 9 a.m.- Memorial Park youth programming Wednesday, July 25th at 6 p.m.- Wilcox Library reading program Monday, July 30th at 10 a.m. - St. Marys Public Library reading program

If you or anyone that you know would like to invite the ECCOTA interns to assist with a program that can be incorporated into the arts, please contact us at 772-7051 or email us at eccota.intern@gmail.com. We want to add a splash of color into your summer!

Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July! Even though some people got drenched with rain while watching the fireworks, it’s great to be able to spend time with friends and family and create unforgettable memories. Not to mention a day off of work and time to enjoy the beautiful summer sun.The holiday may just seem like red, white, and blue to some people, but it is important to remember all of those courageous people who allow us to live in a free country. God Bless America!

Where’s your mind? You’re not entirely sure. But you are feeling artistic. The heat is making your head spin in circles. Is it the lack if sugar, or too much maybe? Or could it be the fact that your brain can’t take much more. Could you relax and take a break, sure.That’s what the weekends are for. However, sometimes the day just feels longer. Being bored isn’t fun, because the actual summer has just begun. Maybe it’s this sun. You feel trapped inside. Or maybe your head is playing tricks? Are you feeling delusional? Maybe you should paint or sing or dance. Get that energy out of your head. It’s OK to feel like this picture. What is it actually saying? It’s very interesting and unique. I’m king of loving the vibe. But, when I feel the way it makes me feel then I seem crazy. Or maybe I’m the crazy one who feels like having fun. Be artistic, think a little crazy. Why not? Who’s going to stop you. Art gives you an opportunity to be whatever you want and think however you want in any moment in time. Embrace it! BEEEEEEEEEE this picture and let your mind tell the story…

We’ve been bitten by the balloon bug! Ever since Bubbles and Blinky the clowns came to visit our Visual Arts Camp, we haven’t been able to stop playing with the leftover balloon animals. This little dog is looking a little worse for the wear, but he’s still holding on! But what will we do when he finally deflates? We may have to become balloon artists ourselves!

Working hard can seem like hardly working :)

Turn that frown upside down, along with this picture!- This is one of the many optical illusions that we will be exploring at our Visual Arts Camp. It is hard to believe that it is only 2 days away. We have so many fun activities planned and can’t wait to start working with the kids, even though there is going to be more this summer than any summer in the past. Optical Illusions are so fun to look at and create yourself. They bring a whole new perspective to the world of art. Be creative!It feels good to step “Out of the Box” every once in a while.

Oobleck!!! Try this recipe. It is one of the coolest things ever. It’s a liquid and a solid and so much fun to play with. It only takes 2 ingredients: corn starch and water. It will definitely keep you entertained for a while; it gave both of us interns a good laugh the other day and we hope that the kids at Visual Arts Camp enjoy it too!

Mission Accomplished! Who knew that just a little water, salt, corn starch, and flour could create clay and play-dough. The process was a little….maybe ALOT sticky… but after kneading it in our hands it came out really well. It’s even simple to dye it any color you want. We will be using this recipe and more at our Visual Arts Camp and can’t wait to see what the kids think. Even though it may get a little messy, it will be such a fun project. It’s so much more rewarding that you can not only create your own masterpiece, but make your supplies too out of normal household ingredients. Who says the interns can’t play and have a little fun creating art too?

How NOT to make a paper flower- While working on ideas and projects for the upcoming visual arts camp, we found out that, unfortunately, we are not experts at origami. Maybe if you squint it’ll look like, um, something. Looks like we’ll have to come up with much more simple things to make with the kids. Right after we nurse our paper cuts.
