“Durham, NC duo Baobab – Phil Torres (vocals, multi-instrumental) and Whitney Trettien (piano) – have released their self-titled full-length debut album of experimental folk. The two are incredibly educated: Torres possesses an M.S. in neuroscience, undertook graduate studies at Harvard, and is publishing a book titled A Crisis of Faith: Atheism, Emerging Technologies, and the Future of Philosophy while Trettien holds a Masters from M.I.T in comparative literature and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Duke in English. So its no surprise that they bring an intellectual edge, lyricism and nuanced textures to the table. Using acoustic and electronic means, their sound incorporates world music and chants. Standouts among the 14 self-produced tracks include "Brownian Motion,” “Getting To Know You,” and “Music For A Movie.”“ – Written by SMarx

“After hearing their self-titled, debut release, we caught up with Phil Torres of Baobab to talk all things music, after recognizing the rare instance in which awesome music nerd, interesting intellectual and kick-ass musician are melded into one superhuman. And naturally, taking the opportunity to pick his brain!”

“Listening to this album would make the most sense (to me) while walking alone down a sunsoaked path through a busy market in a foreign city in which I’ve never before been (or will ever be again), watching the people shout and laugh in a language I can’t understand.”

The album is a lovely, calming collection of tracks that bring to mind a less Spanish Devendra Banhart. With quite a bit of classical guitar expertise, Torres manages to show off his licks while writing simple, often tribal-influenced tunes. The instrumental “Music for a Movie” showcases a well-balanced mix of electric and acoustic sounds that is found on the whole album. Baobab has plenty of room to grow into his unique tribal-electro-folk sound, and it looks like he’ll need it.

This fourteen track debut album is a self-produced gem out of Durham that combines aspects of folk, electronic, experimental, and world music. … Each track is a stand-out, making for phenomenal cohesion. The juxtaposition of this wall of sound with raw acoustic guitars layered over it makes for an incredible soundscape that is far easier than expected to find yourself lost in. Filled with reverberated worldly chants that can often sound afro-pop-ish, the duo of Baobab has done a wonderful job of making themselves stand out in the triangle music scene. One could argue they’re one of the most diverse acts in the region…“

Their self-titled debut album just came out - available for free download! - and it features a beautiful fusion of the acoustic and the electronic. I was floored by this track “Music for a Movie.” The only failing of the title is that I don’t think it could easily be in the background of anything because of how it grabs your attention and sweeps you up in it. It is lush and intricate and the world music vibes radiate a universal warmth. I dig.

…apparently a new band has sprung up out of nowhere and is very quickly gaining traction amongst music bloggers internationally. … Their sound is unique, decorated with electronic sounds mixed with acoustic-sounding guitars, all iced with beautiful layered vocals that feel like silk sheets on freshly made bed. It’s beautiful and captivating all at the same time.

Baobab’s self titled debut is like a friendly squareoff between a high-on-life acoustic guitarist and a slightly warped electronist.

Yep, that’s about right!

Baobab’s single, “Spring Forward,” is complex, hypnotizing, and pleasantly trippy. Layered vocals, looped electronic effects, a xylophone, and guitar, amongst many other layers, envelope my ears and uplift my soul.
