A single strike from an Ottale can crack even the hardest of objects, whether it is a clam or an enemy. Ottale can float for days, expending little energy as they travel from place to place. They often travel in pairs and hold hands so they don’t drift apart. Local folklore considers Ottale a messenger between humans and creatures.

Capture Creatures - by Becky Dreistadt and Frank Gibson
Inspired by Ken Sugimori’s feat of designing the original 151 Pokemon in a single year Becky Dreistadt and Frank Gibson have created 151 unique creatures, relations, and descriptors.

The Exquisite Beast - by Evan Dahm and Yuko Ota
A series of illustrations of a monster evolving traded between Yuko and Evan. All illustrations were done with ink and inkwash.

Midnite Surprise V2 - by KC Green
A collection of material from KC Green’s art blog - midnitesurprise.tumblr.com this collection features a new collection of work featuring original illustrations, comics, and more.

If you were not previously aware, these fine books are now available for preorder! Including-but-not-limited-to my and Evan’s collected Exquisite Beast project!

We worked really hard on designing these books and the Exquisite Beast book is hopefully gonna be really lovely, especially the deluxe edition. We’re shooting for the deluxe cover to be a three-piece done with black faux leather binding over a cloth cover with a screenprinted design, debossed title area, a pasted-on title card. With a ribbon bookmark. I’m ridiculously excited. 8D

And it’s gonna be full of weird monsters and that is cool, too!

Going to reblob this again because Yuko explains it so well. I am super excited about this Exquisite Beast book; it’s been really fun putting together and I think it will turn out great!

we went to see Ursula Le Guin speak and read from a book she translated from Spanish, that was translated from Romanian. The Romanian-to-Spanish translator was there too! And very charming and excited to be reading with his favorite author(!).

The original (Romanian) author’s daughter and nephew were there too. At one point, we heard a story being read in all three languages! (((Not all at once, obvz))) It was neat.

She signed my sketchbook because we forgot to bring books. I gave her my last promotional postcard / comic which I just happened to have on me.

The nugget that really stuck with me was when she said that the book would probably never be turned into a movie or a BBC miniseries because it was “more descriptive than narrative, more idea than drama”.

I get real caught up in Oh Gosh, Maybe I Should Be Working On A Graphic Novel and thinking about story structures and archetypes and tropes and getting mad and being like NO! I want to work on a bunch of little one-pagers! and make a book that way! But then I just did that “Internet Comics” thing and took advantage of the two-page spreads and whatever. I don’t have to decide. It doesn’t matter.

It was nice to hear, is all. I felt like she was telling me it was okay to make different kinds of stories. There aren’t any rules.

(If you haven’t read the Earthsea series or The Left Hand of Darkness, I think they’re both great and I love them.)

Laundry Story is a 12-page comic I drew after a conversation with Aimee Fleck about our mutual love of laundromats. I drew this during stolen hours late at night and between projects.
