I went up to Sydney earlier this week for a job interview. This is literally all the scenery I saw. I did run into an old friend from high school though - that was a lovely surprise.

We’d left Hong Kong that morning, taking a taxi 4:30am, with a driver that absolutely floored it to the airport. My dad said “I’ve never had a cabbie go that fast” and my mum said “We were going fast?” (she had fallen asleep). Transited in Ho Chi Minh City for a few hours, and then eventually made it to Siem Reap.

I found the heat that first day to be incredibly energy-sapping, probably due to a lack of sleep the night before (as my parents realised at about midnight they had forgotten to bring our e-visas for Cambodia). We wandered around this huge temple, and I saw how beautiful it was and I wondered how they managed to build such a huge structure without the help of modern machinery. I watched the beams of golden light stream through the windows, and saw how lovely everyone looked.

Once the sun had set, we had dinner and went back to the hotel. I pretty much passed out on the bed, I was so tired. It was a rather long but beautiful day.

Met a cockatoo named Happy today, he was pretty great. He’d follow the zookeeper around the pen, hoping for a peanut. Saw a pensive leopard cat, plotting his escape and watched a group of flamingos all simultaneously turn and walk in the same direction.

It was nice to get out of the city, into the countryside, the New Territories of Hong Kong. I felt like the air was cleaner and the sunshine was brighter, and you could breathe properly again.

Walked around this huge palace, full of long rooms for entertaining guests, basement war rooms with wall sized maps of Vietnam, and a mini garden/water feature in the middle. Open mics around the place for tour guides to explain things to their groups, but I looked at them and thought of The Chaser’s Open Mic. Watched a propaganda, sorry, informational video in Mandarin (the tour guide made us go there) and didn’t understand a word.
