They are written by well known and well experienced persons. So, whats the use of starting another blog on the same topic! Well, I learned (and still learning) from various such sources and I felt to write down my learnings, experiences and experiments at some place, so that the people who are starting can get a little help. So, here comes my Photography Blog “FLOG”.

The positions of lights may change depending upon the key area of the subject or the mood the photographer wants to establish. Please note that for High Key Lighting elements like white background are used so the the maximum light is bounced back and eliminates maximum shadow part. While for Low Key Lighting the white background is replaced by a black one so that no light is reflected from background.

I do not have much of High Key Photographs as I do not have all the studio arrangements. However the below photograph can be considered as a High Key Photograph. It was taken against a background of white paper with white light. Though I can not claim there is no shadow, but it is evident that the shadow part is very less.

The below photograph is a very good example of High Key Photography. The copyright of the photograph is solely deserved to the photographer as mentioned.

Below are some Low Key Photography. In the immediate next photograph the only light source was the LCD screen of a laptop and it only illuminated the face of the subject. And in the photograph of the stairs its all natural light in a gloomy cloudy day. The wet surfaces has reflected the light and the other parts have not. That way a higher contrast have been created in the photograph.

Below is the result of a hard light condition. The photograph was taken in high noon. You can see how prominent shadows have been created beneath the eyes and the face.

Below photograph was taken at the same area where the above photograph was taken, but in the afternoon instead of noon. As the light was not harsh at that time a soft and mellow effect has been created.

Below is a backlit as well as low key photograph. The light coming from background has illuminated the object’s edges and the light available in front has brought out the details.

Below is a classic backlit photograph. It is neither high key nor low key. Just a normal one.

In this photo the thorns are backlit by direct morning sun rays while the flower is lighted by the bouncing light from an adjacent wall. With this I would like to mention that controlling aperture is very important while you want to experiment with light. Why, that you can read in my previous posts.

Here, backlit has only illuminated the internal veins of the leaf.

Below is a experimental effect with back light. Here, the light seeped from the side and it illuminated the shiny particles suspended in the water.

In the below photograph the sky was the source of light and as there was no other lighting from front side a silhouette has been created.

This is also a silhouette and it is with rim back light. There can be rim back light without silhouette also, but I don’t have a photograph of the same. A search in Google would show you many.

Enough of showing examples. Now get going and shoot some by yourself.

Happy shooting.

Understanding Light in Photography

Photograph literally means “Painting with light”. So, it is pretty well understood that light is the most important aspect which need to be taken into consideration very seriously for good photograph. Many times it happens that despite of a very good subject or situation, the photograph is spoiled due to bad lights. Appropriate light would make the exact mood and otherwise the mood would be gone. In this article we would not go into the very technicality of lighting but would emphasise on the philosophy. First of all we would need to learn about some terms.

# Light sources : These are the objects from which the light is falling upon the subject. There could be three types of light sources.

Key Light : This is the main source of the light. This illuminates the main features of the subject. It is not necessary that the key light is to be placed horizontally. It can be placed at an angle or even on top of the subject to create different mood.

Fill Light : Sometimes using only the key light brings in harsh shadows. Say, a persons face is lighted from one side. In that case the other side would be in shadow. Even from the front lighting shadows are created around the eyes. Then the fill light comes into rescue to eliminate or lighten those dark area. It is always at a lower density than the key light and its sole aim is to throw in some light to the areas where the key light has not been able to reach.

Back light : This is the light used to create some depth in the photograph. It is cast from the back of the subject. Its main purpose is to illuminate the subject in a way so that the subject stands out from the background. Sometime back light is called rim light as when cast from back it creates a rim of light around the subject that separates the subject from the background.

# Light Ratio : With these light sources the term Light Ration comes into account. It is simply the ratio of the intensity of the key light to the fill lights. There is a relation between the f-stop of the lights and light ratio. The light ratio is the 2 times the f-stop. That is if f- stop difference of the key light to the fill light is 3 then the ration would be cube of two to one, i.e. 8:1. This happens as each f-stop difference amounts to twice the intensity of light.

# High key light : Now as we know key light and light ration, understanding high key light would be very simple. In a lighting condition where the light ratio of the key light and fill in lights are almost equal or near then it is a high key light. In this the intensity of fill in light is quite high. That way the shadow part is very much diminished and as a result the contrast is minimal.

# Low key light : Here, the contrast is way too much and the light ration is on higher side. This brings in a lot of shadow part as the intensity of fill light is kept very low.

Both the high key lighting and low key lighting has their own area of use. While in high key lighting the technicality of shooting becomes hassle free, but due to lack of contrast the photos become somehow flat. In other case, in low key lighting the technicality of shooting becomes more but it adds depth and drama to the photographs.

# Hard light & soft light : A light that is well focussed is a hard light and a light that is not fully focussed is a soft light. In another sense, a light which cast a prominent shadow may be called a hard light and the light that does not cast a prominent shadow is a soft light. It can be easily understood when at mid day the sun cast a distinguished shadow. Then its a hard light. When a cloud blocks the sun the shadow looses its edge. Then the light turns into soft. The hardness or softness of the light depends upon the intensity of light and the size of the source of light. A smaller radius light source would give harder light than a bigger diameter light source.

With use of different lighting different genre of photography has been created. Light is a very important element for portrait and product photography, as in these cases light can be controlled. Like for produce photography when a light tent is used, a high key lighting is used to eliminate any shadow. But again sometimes the black box is used so that all the background details is lost and only the product stands out.

Similarly, for portraits, if only a fill light is used some prominent shadows are created on the faces that can become the reason for loss of details. So, fill in lights are used. It is not necessary that only a studio light is to be used for a fill in light. A fill in flash, a reflector or even a white wall or surface can act as a source of fill light. Even you can bounce the light from your flash from a wall to make a fill light instead of directly focusing it. In outdoor shootings where the sun acts as a key light reflectors are used for fill light.

Sometimes for the artistic or an other specific reason high key lighting is used for portraits and sometimes low key lights are used.

When back light is used for portraits it can be called backlit photography or in some sophisticated term ‘Contre jour’. When with back light a rim of light is obtained around the object, then it may be called rim back light. Always always remember that if only back light is used and no key or fill light, then the foreground would be dark and the details would be lost. Hence, for backlit portraits always another light source is used for illuminating the foreground or in the case of portraits photography the face of the model.

When there is no fill in light and the back light is quite strong, then the subject would be only a black blot against the bright background. Then such type of photograph is called ’Silhouette’.

For portraits hard light is generally avoided due to the shadow effect. A soft light gives a much more mellow mood and hence it creates a soothing effect. You can turn your hard flash light into a soft light by making a cover made of white muslin cloth or butter paper.

This is all about the basic of light in a nut shell. I’ll post some photographs in next post to make you understand the use of different lights. Till then experiment in your own. If you have any query, please let me know.

The sun is preparing to set down at the west. Its time for all the tourist to get back to their respective accommodation from the elephant safari. We were also going back from the day long safari. We enjoyed a lot in the whole day and there was noting we could regret off. Suddenly, while our elephant took a turn in the jungle trail, I saw a mighty wild elephant grazing lazily in a nook of the forest. The setting sun was casting a beautiful light at its background. I asked the elephant driver to stop and let me take a shot (with my camera off course) at it. He refused due to safety ground. But some unofficial buck in his pocket, let him lower me at the ground. I took position, made the frame and clicked Just then the wild beast charged on me. Thank god our elephant was trained well to shoo him away. And what came out of this sheer luck, bravery and risk? It is well deserved and one of my best shots till date.

He is a great photographer and a photojournalist. You can see his best creation here. I would also take the liberty to post some of his masterpiece in next post of Flog.

“Documentary Photography is a wide and distinctive branch of photography. It primarily deals with the purpose of documenting something.

A Documentary Photographer is expected to take photo of something which depicts an object, story or an event. Subjects and events are usually candid and not pre-thought or staged. They are supposed to be real and depict truth. That is the only parameter that separates Documentary photography from Ordinary Photography.

The situations can be of any form. Be it war, poverty, drought, famine, child labour etc.

A Documentary Photographer captures images to present reality of a true story. In common practice, Documentary Photographers usually work as freelancers and contribute photos to magazines, newspapers or journals. The work of a Documentary Photographer includes both research on the subject and development of the story. One is incomplete without the other.

One of the most important tasks of a documentary photographer is to take effective photographs. Lighting and Composition are the most important factors that will depict the mood and circumstances in which the photo was taken in. However, colour correction is one’s own choice. While, most documentary photographers prefer shooting in black and white, there are photographers who like to shoot colour.

Documentary Photography has been one of the most challenging genres of Photography, not just because there is no chance of retake or reshoot. The fact that a documentary photographer has to work under hostile conditions like War Zones, Floods, Cyclone etc keeping his heart in his mouth is also why, people find it hard to stick on to for a long time. For them, such places could be considered as just another day at office.

Working under constraints, controlling your emotions while having the finger on the shutter release, feeling the pain while still sticking the eye on the viewfinder, these are the never-ending attributes for a documentary photographer. At times, there will be a clash between your ethics and your duty, and that is exactly when your conscience will play tricks on you. This is precisely the reason why people don’t take documentary photography as hobby (unlike Wildlife, travel and nature photography).

There are lots of organisations who use documentary photographs. They have specific aims. Their purpose is to create awareness and attract the attention of the people for a certain cause.

Associated Press, Reuters, Magnum Photos, Getty Images are some of the leading stock photo agencies which support freelance documentary photography. They collect photographs from all over the world.”

Happy shooting.

Playing with Aperture

Light has another interesting property. While light beams pass through a hole, it takes the shape of the hole. Using this property of light, one can make interesting bokeh shots. Bokeh is a Japanese word which means blur. In photography bokeh shots are made by blurring the light sources and thus giving the lights a beautiful look.

Now, you all know what aperture is. It is made of different elements and all the elements together makes rather a polygonal opening. That’s why in some cases the blurred lights takes the shape of polygonal shapes.

To know the actual shape of the aperture of your lens, dismantle the lens from the camera body, put it in reverse direction against a light, i.e. put the end which attach to the camera body furthest from you. You would clearly see and understand what aperture is. To understand it better, you can even set different aperture value by re-attaching it to your camera and repeat the process.

Now, lets learn about some tricks with aperture. Take a cardboard. Cut a small hole at the center of it. The shape can be a heart shape or a star shape. Attach the cardboard piece in front of your lens with the help of celotape. Now, this hole would act as an aperture for your camera. Set your camera on a tripod and use cable release or auto timer for taking snaps. Set the whole arrangement to shoot diwali lighting. Use wide aperture, long shutters speed and moderate ISO so that grain do not come. Compose the frame.

Focus the lights first. Then slightly de-focus them. Take the snap. And bingo ..you get lovely bokeh.

The above photographs were taken with a cardboard with heart shaped hole in it.

This was taken with a heart shaped aperture card (i.e. the cardboard with heart shaped opening). I did not covered the lens totally and left some opening on the top corner. Hence, there were two aperture and so, the upper part got different shape.

No aperture card was used. Hence, the bokeh took circular shape.

Here you can see pentagonal bokeh. It is because that at wide aperture the actual aperture of my 50mm takes such shape.

Experiment and if possible let me see how you have learnt.

Happy shooting.

Sports Photography

As the name suggests, it is definitely related to sports events. It is of the still version of the cricket matches, football games, car races etc., you see in televisions. The lens used are telephoto lens, so that the shooting can be done by staying out of the sports arena and also the vast range of the field can be covered at once. The photographer need to have a very quick reflex, otherwise he might miss many candid moments. The shooting is done in the same lighting condition of the game, i.e. may be in broad daylight or under floodlight. But as the lighting is always good enough it do not become a constraint. There is not any special technique other than possessing good camera and good telephoto lens and maybe a tripod. Candid moments, action, emotions are the best chosen elements for shooting. And most of all, one must not forget to enjoy the excitement of the game.

All the products need advertisement for their marketing and photographs of them with some tagline has always been a good medium for displaying them to the mass.

The photographs always tell about the product, i.e. highlights the best features of the product being shoot.

The environment for such photography is always controlled. The product is always the main element for the photographs. Most of the shootings are done indoor, hence no problem with lighting condition. Many times tripods are used. So, no problem with longer shutter speeds if required. Fixed focal length lens can be used, as one can move and compose the frame as per requirement/wish.

There can be lots of lighting experiments related to product photography. We may discuss that later.

I have not done product photography on a serious basis, as I have not been much of a indoor person or advertising guru. But, I still have one or two photographs that can be categorized as product photography.

Happy shooting.

Wildlife and Nature Photography

As the name suggests, these genre of photography contains two types of photography. Wildlife photography, which is strictly restricted to shooting the animals found in wild, and not your pet dog or the cows in the streets. Going to a forest and shooting tigers, elephants or going to a bird sanctuary and shooting birds comes to be as wildlife photography. Shooting birds can be possible in your home also, when in the morning you found many kinds of birds moving to start the day.

You definitely need a telephoto zoom lens, as the tiger you are shooting would not pose one meter away from you. Even if he is eager to do so, you might not find it very comfortable. Birds would not come near to you to pose and neither they would feel comfortable while you try to climb the tree where they are sitting peacefully.

You have to depend upon the natural light, and in many cases fast shutter speed is required as the animals are on move most of the time. So, its better to choose a lens which has a wide aperture value. A telephoto zoom is required as to get the right frame, you don't need to move. What you just need is to zoom in or zoom out. Moreover, the lens that makes noise while zooming can not be preferred, as it would aware the animal of your presence and that could not be preferable in many cases. At present USM lenses are available in market, though they are a bit costly but the the totally noiseless.

Choice of clothing is an important part for wild life photography. You’ll need to wear clothes of color which matches with the forest perfectly, i.e. dark green, khaki etc. and not any vibrant colors like red, yellow. Smoking, drinking, talking, singing, playing music in your mobile, making fire and anything else which are not naturally a part of the forest, is strictly not allowed. So, if you can’t do away with any one of them, you are still welcome to the forest as a tourist but not as a wildlife photographer. Its better if you do not like a large group. Large group means talking among the group, which can ruin the shot of a lifetime.

And most of all you what you need most is determination, patience, courage and respect. Determination to wake up in the dawn, as the animals are most active that time. Patience to wait long hours while the mosquitoes feast on your blood, and when your feet start to have a cramp and you do not move if the mother deer run away with her kids. Courage to lay low in a ‘machaan’ while the tiger comes to drink water just 10 meter away. And you must respect the forest and the animals. Its you, who is an outsider in the forest and not the animals. So, be humble as you become when visiting some other’s house.

All in all, wildlife photography is not for the weak hearted.

Nature photography, on the the other hand is easier. Nature photography means shooting any element of the nature, be it a flower, a leaf, some insects, your dog playing in the shrub and so on. A long focal length lens off course helps to shoot the subjects which are alive or moving. You will need to depend upon natural light in most of the cases and you might need to stick to faster shutter speed.

I am not much into wildlife photography. So, I can not post too many photos. I would try to borrow some of the photographs from some of my friends and post them later.

However, what I have are here below for you to see.

It was taken in Van Vihar at Bhoapl. The tiger was in his cage, so, you might object that it is not an wildlife photography. I put my case on the point, that whether the tiger is in cage or not, certainly is is not an pet animal. The photo was edited by Vishal Sinha to remove the marks of the cage bars infront of the tiger.

The above photographs can be defined in the category of mature photography. The last photograph was taken by me and edited by Pratik Prasenjit.

The classical definition is that the image projected on the “film plane” (i.e., film or a digital sensor) is close to or greater than the same size as the subject. As the photograph is seen later in a monitor, which is much larger by the film sensor, it seems that the objects are magnified in the photograph. The ratio of the subject size on the film plane (or image sensor plane) to the actual subject size is known as the reproduction ratio. Likewise, a macro lens is classically one lens capable of reproduction ratios greater than 1:1, although it now refers to any lens with a large reproduction ratio, despite rarely exceeding 1:1.

There are special lenses for macro photography. They generally have long barrels with close focusing and higher magnification ration. Lens with long focal distance is preferred for macro shots. With these lens one do not need to go very close to his subject. In case its a fly or a bug, staying out of the subject’s comfort zone do not scare it away. MY Canon EF 100mm Macro lens is a superb one, as due to its 100 mm focal length I can shoot tiny insects without going too close to them.

Normal lens with lesser focal length can also be used for macro shots by using a reversing ring. How, that can be topic for another post.

Macro photography can be of anything. Like of a close up shot of a toy, an insect or a tiny wild flower. Sometimes its difficult to differentiate between nature to macro photography as flowers, insects are all part of nature. So, we may stick to the idea that some nature photography can also be a macro shot and vice versa.

As nature elements can be shoot to ease in outdoors only, hence natural light is preferred. With artificial lights in a studio, as the shooting is done from a close proximity, shadow of the equipment can ruin the output. Wide aperture is used mostly, to stand out the main subject and blur out the unnecessary details. Fast shutter speed is preferred, as the insect can fly away if one stays too close to it for long, or a breeze can disturb the position of the flower being shot.

Below are some macro photographs to make you understand my points.

When a photograph of this genre contains in general a group of people, then it may be called people photography. But when a particular person is given more importance, or a single person is in the photograph, then it is called portrait. Most of the portraits shows the face of the person. But there are faceless portraits, where only other body part of a person is shown.

People photography can be at a place where a gathering is there, like in a wedding, in a meeting etc. There you can not control the light. But most of the portraits are taken in a controlled lighting condition. Remember, years back when one had to go with full family to a studio in special occasions to get them photographs. All those were portrait photography.

One need good light for portraits. If the light is flat, then the portraits would come as flat. It can be quite confusing. But the truth is that as light is important for a portrait, shadows are equally important. Without shadows the face of the subject can not be highlighted. Sharp lights are not preferred, as they create sharp shadows. Hence, soft lights and/or diffusers are used. aperture can be wide to mid range or even narrower, depending upon the lighting condition. Shutter speed is tried to be kept fast, as unintentional movements of the subjects would make them out of focus and hence a blurry picture. wide angle lens are not required, as the photograph is being taken in close proximity of the subjects and most probably with their permission. Framing, perspective are also two important things to follow for portraits. To understand them better read my previous posts.

One thing to mention here. Technical details like light, shutter speed, aperture setting is fine. But the most important aspect of portraits are not only the human being. The important most element of the photographs are their emotion. If a human face in a portrait do not have any emotion, then it very well turn into an uninteresting photograph.

Framing, perspective are also two important aspect for portraits. For details about framing and perspective read my previous posts.

I might be wrong, but I think that photographs of idols, statues where only their face or body parts are shown also comes into this genre of photography.

Here follows some examples.

Above are some people photography. Notice that every picture contains some human emotion and action, without which they would have been completely blunt.

This is a portrait photography. The light and shadow has made it a stunning one.

Clever framing and high contrast .. that’s what makes it. Look that he is chewing his fingers. It gives the photo some fun element.

Some more portraits. Each one tells a story of their own. Perfectly balanced light and shade makes them more beautiful. Framing and perspective also plays their part.

Above are three photographs which do not contain any human, but faces of idols. I consider them as portraits. What do you say?

Happy shooting.

Landscape/Cityscape/ Waterscape/ Skyscape

As the name suggests, this genre of photography basically deals with photographs of beautiful lands, part of a urban/ rural area, water bodies and sky. The photographs contains a large area to show a broad view of the places. Hence, often wide angle lenses are preferred for taking such photographs. Narrower aperture is used, so that all the elements in the picture is well focused. Rule of third is often followed to get a good photograph of this genre.

For landscape daylight is generally required, as it helps to expose the photograph properly. But I have seen stunning landscapes of Himalaya taken at moonlight. I can’t post those photographs here due to copyright issue.

Cityscape can be taken at anytime. Morning glory in a walkway, evening hustle-bustle, night lights anything can be a theme for a cityscape.

Water bodies also make great photographs. Flowing rivers, oceans, ponds all are great themes for waterscapes.

A sky creates many dramas in it due to the vast range of clouds, lighting conditions at different times of the day. I have some good skyscapes with me.

Many times these photographs can not be defined as a single type of photographs. As the photograph of a ocean can contain a majestic sky. A landscape can have a gorgeous lake in front of it. So better not to take trouble to categories it as a particular genre, but to enjoy the shear beauty of the photographs.

This is a landscape taken at Pachmarih, MP. Below is the Satpura National Tiger Reserve Forest and the Satpura Mountain Range.

Another landscape taken to the way to Nalanda, Bihar.

This is particularly a cityscape where architecture of a building has been shown.

ISBT Bhopal - off course a cityscape.

Reflection on water. This can be called a waterscape.

In the above two photographs waterscape and landscape are merged together. One can say that in the above picture even a part of cityscape is also present.

River Tapi in evening : This ia a waterscape with a beautiful evening sky.

The above three photographs are perfect example of skyscapes.

Actually I went into hibernation, not due to any cold but due to a raised body temperature. Now, It seems that I lived out of it and my ‘FLOG’ would not be orphaned so soon.

Anyway, now let’s talk photography. As per the subject matter you are clicking photography can be differentiated in to may genre. They are:

1) Landscape/Cityscape/ Waterscape/ Skyscape : They are basically a wide angled photograph of land/city/water or sky. That’s why they are named like that. In later posts photographs would explain them to you clearly.

2) People and Portrait: The photographs which contain human elements are called people photography. In people photography where a particular person is given more importance is called Portrait Photography. The face of the person with its expressions is the main interest points of such kind of photography. But sometimes the face is omitted in the photograph, and only part of other body organ, like hand, legs are included. Then it is called faceless portrait.

3) Wildlife and Nature : As the name signifies these genre of photography relate to the wild animals and elements of nature.

4) Architecture: Old buildings, churches, skyscrapers etc are some interesting topics to shoot. Such photos are called architectural photography.

5) Macro : In macro photography small objects are photograph with special lenses so that they almost look life-size or bigger. Anything can be a subject of macro photography, like a bee, a bug, a water drop, a flower or even a toy.

6) Product : This kind of photography is for the advertising market, where one need to advertise the features of their own product through still media. Food, beverage, cosmetics, jewellary, clothing all things can be treated under product photography category.

7) Fashion : This is exclusively related to the fashion industry. Such kind of photographs shows the designs, models and all the glitters in the final outcome.

8) Photojournalism : Journalism through photography is called photojournalism. Shooting an important event (like, a riot, a battle, a ralley etc.)that is going on the print the next day is always an exciting, time consuming, stressful and sometimes dangerous job. I personally think this is the toughest job among the different genre of photography other than wildlife photography.

9) Sports : Sports photography is related to the arena of different soprts.

10) Abstract : When a photograph is taken in such a way that the subject matter in it looks unreal than its actual form, then it is called abstract photography.

Many people can refer to many other genre of photography, like, wedding photography, festival photography, lightning photography etc. etc., but they are just one or more mixed form of the above mentioned items. For example, wedding photography is just people and portrait photography.

I’ll post photographs for those genres I have ventured till now in coming posts.

Till then, ‘Happy Shooting’.
