from now through october 21, stop by the new york botanical garden and check out the stunning tribute to claude monet’s idyllic garden in giverny, france. monet, who was an avid gardener was quoted as once saying, “i perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.” two rarely seen paintings by monet will be on exhibition, along with artifacts including the artist’s palette, bills of sale for his plants, letters, and historic photographs. nybg will also host films, concerts, poetry readings, and art classes for kids celebrating monet’s life and work, and starting in july, his most famous subject, water lilies, will be featured in the courtyard pools. visit the new york botanical garden website for tickets and more information…

the pansy is a pretty little biennial flower that has won the attention of poets and artists, including shakespeare, wordsworth, and georgia o’keeffe. its resemblance to a pensive face gave it its name, which is derived from the french pensée, meaning ’thought’. the flower is also known by names that play on the whimsical nature of love, such as heartsease, love in idleness, and “jump up and kiss me”. in scandinavia, scotland, and german-speaking countries, the pansy is known as the stepmother flower, from stories about a selfish stepmother that are told while plucking off corresponding parts of the blossom to fit the plot. a german fable tells of how the pansy lost its perfume: once pansies were very fragrant, growing wild in fields and forests. it was said that in their eagerness to pick the sweet-smelling bloom, people would trample the grass down completely. unfortunately, cows were starving due to the ruined fields, so the pansy prayed to give up her perfume. her prayer was answered, and without her perfumed scent, the fields grew tall and the cows grew fat on the fresh green grass. in the language of flowers, a pansy left by a lover for their beloved means “I am thinking of our forbidden love”…

i love bari! bari studio, which is located in tribeca, is an addictive and evolved form of movement that transforms your body and mind…it’s a mix of high-energy cardio mixed with barre work, suspension bands, and the spiritual “centering” of yoga. (i’ve been a triber myself for a while now too and loving every second of it.) this week, we sat down with alexandra, the cool, interesting, fun, super smart and not to mention awesome chick behind bari (who has also become a dear friend), to get to know her a bit better…

tell us a little bit about yourself…

i am obsessed with olives. especially when soaked in vodka.

where did you grow up, and what was the most positive aspect of growing up there?

i grew up in caracas, venezuela as one of 36 cousins. apart from making you borderline insane, it also developed a real love for community.

you graduated from wharton, did you always know you wanted to end up in the fitness world?

not at all! i always loved fitness but it wasn’t until i was in the “real world” that i started thinking i could make my hobby into a career.

how did the bari method come to be?

it has been such an interesting and fun process. it was born out of a ton of experience and research, mostly from brice (my business partner) and me. however in the past year there have been many professionals (both in fitness and medicine) that have added (and sometimes subtracted!) to the method. bari has also been a “lab” of sorts - we can very clearly see what works, what doesn’t work, and quickly do something about it to evolve the method in the right direction.

what is the most exciting and the most difficult part about owning your own company?

the most exciting part is to have a blank slate and be able to create exactly what you envision with no “buts” or “maybes” along the way. we want bari to be a horizontal organization where everyone’s input matters (from clients to employees), where people feel like a family, and where the environment is always laid back and loving as well as professional and best in class. and we’ve been able to create just that (or pretty close to it). the most challenging part has been juggling every aspect of the business - marketing, finance, accounting, expansion, client relationship management, operations, product development, human resources - with a few pairs of hands. but even the toughest days are some of the best days.

where do you see yourself in 5 years?

i envision the business growing and i think we’ll be in more sectors than fitness and in more cities than new york. however i see myself in new york living a pretty similar life to the one i have right now. i couldn’t ask for much more.

what one word and/or animal would you use to describe yourself?

i’m the most stereotypical scorpio possible.

what do you do for fun/to relax (other than bari)?

i love going out to dinner with my fiancé, jorge. we love to explore the city; every time we hang out it’s an adventure.

do you have any advice for young female entrepreneurs?

think big. it’s very easy to fall into the “operations” aspect of the business and forget about the “big picture” that made you start something to begin with. things like culture, vision mission and values, are never “urgent.” things like paying employees and making clients happy every day are. so make sure you always make time for the things that inspired you to start your venture.

in honor of cinco de mayo tomorrow…we are featuring this prickly plant! the cactus got its name from carolus linnaeus, a botanist who created a universal system of plant names in latin and greek. he named the plant after the greek word “kaktos,” meaning thistle. originating in the americas, there are now over 2,500 species of cactus recognized today. the aztec indians founded the capital of their empire on a spot where they saw an eagle perched on top of a large cactus. that scene is now on the flag of mexico. native americans used cacti in many ways, especially in ceremonies. cacti were used to start and stop rainfall or wind, to assist in burial, and even to place curses. the plant was also used by natives to make arrow shafts, shampoo, jewelry, brushes, wine, and face paint. in the language of flowers, cactus symbolizes endurance. stop by the shop & pick up a cute cactus to keep you going at your cinco de mayo fiesta!

may day, the first of may, is the celebration of spring and the coming of summer. throughout history, flowers have been connected to may day commemorations in various ways…the earliest may day celebrations appeared in pre-christian times with the festival of flora, the roman goddess of flowers. may is also observed as the virgin mary’s month, and in works of art, etc, mary’s head is often adorned with flowers. on may 1, 1561, king charles IX of france received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm. he decided to offer a lily of the valley each year to the ladies of the court. therefore, at the beginning of the 20th century, it became a custom to give a sprig of lily of the valley on may 1 as a symbol of springtime. in germany, women would place roses or rice in form of a heart at the home of their beloved on the 1st of may. today, people celebrate may day by making flower crafts such as head wreaths or may day garlands, or by dancing around a may pole, which comes from a germanic tradition of rejoicing at the coming of summer and new growth. in some parts of north america, children may create “may baskets” of sweets and/or flowers to leave anonymously on neighbors’ doorsteps. the giver rings the bell, then runs away, and the recipient tries to catch them as they flee. if the recipient catches the person who offered the basket, a kiss is exchanged…
