Parapsychology Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) 2019

Parapsychology Massively Open Online Course 2019 (ParaMOOC2019) is underway, FREE, and enrollment is still OPEN.

The Parapsychology Massively Open Online Course 2019 (ParaMOOC2019) is in progress and open for enrollment through May 31. The ParaMOOC2019 course is FREE and is sponsored by the Parapsychology Foundation and features presentations from prominent academic parapsychologists.

Live class sessions and discussion forums have been scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays at noon Eastern. The ParaMOOC2019 course is hosted on the teaching platform WizIQ. Recorded presentations will be available in WizIQ and on the Parapsychology Foundation YouTube channel.

The theme for ParaMOOC2019 is “Survival of Death and Parapsychology.” The course will cover the range of modern survival research topics to include: near-death experiences (NDE); past-life experiences (reincarnation); end-of-life experiences; mental mediumship; after-death communication (ADC); and apparitional experiences.

Speakers are affiliated with universities and research institutes across the world such as: State University of New York; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; University of North Texas; University of Northhampton (UK); Chubu University (Japan); Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil); and Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health (Germany).

During the Quasi-War against France, one of his most successful engagements on the frigate USS CONSTELLATION was against the larger and heavily armed French frigate L'INSURGENTE on February 9 1799 in the West Indies

The vessel is believed to be haunted by sailors dating across both versions of the warship

THOUGHTOGRAPHY

Thoughtography is the mental (or psychokinetic) capacity to produce images on film or other media through intentionality.

The term ‘thoughtography’ was coined in 1910 by Tomokichi Fukurai, a Japanese psychology professor who encountered the phenomenon while working with a clairvoyant

The most famous adept at thoughtography was the late Ted Serios who produced hundreds of images on Polaroid film under controlled conditions witnessed by varieties of subject matter experts. Also, Polaroid imaging ruled out the potential for fraud arising from exposure or darkroom techniques

The ITC-Thoughtography experiment aimed to obtain control images in discernable detail of members who resided in the Poe home to include Edgar Allan Poe, his wife Virginia Eliza Clemm, and his aunt Maria Poe Clemm. Their images were conveniently situated on the fireplace mantle

METHOD

Video was captured on a SONY DCR-SR45 camcorder. Camcorder video was then fed to a TV tuner stick connected to a laptop via a USB port. Audio from a Ovilus-X ITC device was sent to a distribution amplifier, which was used to create co-channel interference in the composite video signal

This experiment represented a departure on the traditional Klaus Schreiber Method (KSM) for video ITC, where the interference is created through feedback loops from pointing the camera at a monitor

In this experiment the interference pattern was generated from audio produced by the Ovilus-X, used on the phonetic setting. This device translates electronic voice phenomena (EVP) from vocal frequency (VF) into an amplified and audible form using a speech synthesizer

During instances of ITC chatter, smartphones were used to capture interference patterns generated on the laptop display. This technique represented another departure from the traditional KSM method of examining every frame of video

Research indicates that successful trans video captures often were preceded by EVP that cued image collection for experimenters. This concept directly leveraged the psi-functioning that was producing apparent EVP towards affecting video streams

Video is a series of still picture scans usually changing at the rate of 30 frames per second. Images are produced by voltages that control color (chroma), brightness (luma), and scan information. Horizontal and vertical scanning is moderated by synchronization pulses

OUTCOMES

The ITC-Thoughtography experiment unfortunately did not yield discernible images of Poe family members. Most images did not convey anything recognizable. However, some images appeared to have representations of objects or words seemingly associated with prominent works of Edgar Allan Poe

The camera was situated in a display room on the 2nd floor in a corner that allowed a view of the stairwell to the garret (attic). The first two images are baseline views of the room without signal interference. In the second image, an investigator is in the room and camera field of view

The next two images display a facsimile of a smoking pipe. This was a signature accessory of the fictional detective character “C. Auguste Dupin”, who first appeared in Poe’s acclaimed short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”

The next two images appear to display the letters “RUE”, which also connects to Poe’s work “The Murders in the Rue Morgue." However, some might interpret the letters as “RVE”

The next two images appear to display a facsimile illustration of the head of a common raven. This may connect to Poe’s most celebrated poem "The Raven”, which cemented his celebrity

The final two images appear to display a facsimile of a mask in the bottom left corner. This may relate to Poe’s short story “The Masque of Red Death.” The image possibly also contains faces at the center right position and could also be an instance of visual communication

REFLECTIONS

The ITC-Thoughtography experiment was exploratory. In isolation any of the reported images, which are approximations or facsimiles of objects represented, could be ascribed to pareidolia, which is the human tendency to see meaningful patterns in random data

While different observers may see different patterns, collectively the images appear to be reasonably recognizable, although not perfect, representations of the objects in question. And, the collective of images suggests the possibility of visual communication

There had been ample streams of EVP throughout the night and audio findings will be presented in separate posts. Some audio streams related to Poe’s ancestors such as Major David Poe (who served as the Assistant Deputy Quartermaster General for Baltimore), as well as to Edgar Allan Poe himself

While the experiment had aimed for high-detail imagery obtained in the Ted Serios experiments, perhaps thought imaging is easier to effect on smaller scales, much as it appears easier to capture EVP in fragmented bursts. Most images appeared to be produced from a rearrangement of features in the background frame

However, a question remains as to what were the sources of the effects, i.e. living and/or post-mortem agencies? Since observers are taking photographs during apparent instances of ITC, psi functioning as well as engagement on the part of the participants may have mattered towards experiment outcomes

In a larger sense, perhaps this applies across all ghost experiences inasmuch as that they may involve the interplay of living and post-mortem agencies in the production of ”idea patterns.“ This much was suggested in the classic work ”Apparitions“ by GNM Tyrell

Future instances of this experiment will return to the traditional KSM technique of examining every frame of video but this will be limited to high-interest periods and/or streams of audio

Series of response streams received before the formal start of National Ghost Hunting Day. Communicators were discussing the function of the P-SB7 ITC device after one had asked (“What’s the Spirit Thing”). Audio was captured with a Kinect for Windows SLS Sensor. The DRV stage consisted of a: P-SB7 ITC device; MACKIE 402-VLZ3 Mixer; HARMON DIGITECH 1066 Vocal Processor; ART EQ-351 31 Band 1/3 Octave Graphic Equalizer; TIMEWAVE DSP-599zx Digital Noise Filter and a BOSE speaker. Audio was analyzed with PRAAT software which provided the wave forms and voice print. The audio was also enhanced with noise filtering and normalization using AUDACITY. The Tschiffely-Kent estate in Montgomery County and present day Gaithersburg MD is situated on land that was originally called “Quince Orchard” that was once held by the Claggett family

The land was bequeathed to the sons of Henry Claggett, Joseph and Zechariah Claggett, through his last will and testament in 1778. However only Joseph resided on the land which had expanded to 100 acres by the time of his death. After Joseph’s death, ownership passed to his heirs in 1829

Frederick A. Tschiffely acquired the property in 1852 from Elizabeth Claggett Jones. Although he was in the wholesale pharmaceuticals business, he operated the estate as farm. He was married to Elizabeth Ann Wilson Tschiffely. Their children were: Frederick Jr; Elberta; Elgar; Albert; Catherine; Elizabeth; Wilson; Linda; Kate; and James. Upon his death in 1892, his son Frederick Jr inherited the farm

Following the death of his mother in 1900, Frederick A. Tschiffely Jr tore down the existing house to build the present day mansion and outbuildings, all of which were constructed in brick. The estate was called Wheatlands, a reference to the wheat and corn grown on the farm. As farming declined the land was used for pasture for cows, sheep and race horses. Portions of the property were also used as a stone quarry

Dr. Frederick A. Tschiffely Jr was a pharmacist who owned a wholesale drug store in Washington DC and kept many pharmaceuticals at his house. When area residents needed prescriptions filled, they would come to his house, which they sometimes referred to as “The Bricks"

Dr. Tschiffely was married to Dolly Brown Tschiffely. Their children were: Clifton; Charles; Ora; Dolly; Stuart; Douglas; Claude; Cecil. The Wheatlands farm was operated by Upton Burris, an overseer who lived on the farm. After his death in 1931, the property passed to his his oldest sons and daughters

In 1942, Otis Beall Kent, a prominent attorney from Washington DC, acquired the property from the Tschiffely heirs and renamed the estate Kentlands Farm. He made several changes to the house to suit his architectural tastes and to house his collections of Persian rugs, musical instruments, and art. He also altered and added to the outbuildings, to include the construction of his own fire house and an underground shelter which could accommodate up to fifty persons

Mr. Kent was an early proponent of wildlife preservation. Toward this end, he constructed gardens, lanes, hedgerows, dams and ponds as habitats for birds and game at the estate. He also gifted land to the National Geographic Society and the Izaak Walton League to develop a wildlife sanctuary. He was a lifelong bachelor and he passed away in 1972. He left his estate to his adopted daughter Helene Danger Kent

In 1978, representatives of Kent’s estate created the Kentland Foundation with 162 acres. On May 26, 1988, Helene Kent sold Kentlands to the Great Seneca Limited Partnership to develop varieties of housing for area residents to include apartments, townhomes and single family homes

The Kentlands mansion and outbuildings were gifted to the City of Gaithersburg in 1992 and were since renovated into cultural facilities. The Kentlands Mansion now serves as an art gallery and venue that host weddings, parties and business events. The Arts Barn houses studios for artists in residence and a 99-seat theater

The mansion appears to have a haunted reputation. Paranormal encounters have been reported as far back as 1942 and continue to a lesser extent through the present. These include: apparitions of women in Victorian-era dress and sightings or sensed-presence encounters involving the late Mr. Kent; as well as imitative sounds to include footsteps and groans

Other paranormal type encounters have involved various electrical and physical anomalies such as: object displacements; lights and door movements on the 3rd floor; radios operating without power; and self-activation of music boxes

The ghost expedition and demonstration will attempt to obtain "drop-in” communications connected to the mansion’s history and its residents and evidence of a haunting during the Ghosts of Gaithersburg event

Random Event Generator (REG) Outcomes at the Burnt Mills West Special Park Ghost Expedition 2018: Emergence of Possible Signatures?

The Burnt Mills West Special Park Ghost Expedition was conducted as part of the National Ghost Hunting Day (NGHD) experiment to build a global “consciousness bridge.” The NGHD event involved synchronized paranormal investigations occurring from 10 pm - 12 am EST with connectivity provided by streaming services and social media.

Random Event Generators (REGs) are statistical devices commonly employed in parapsychology to test mind-matter interactions, specifically microscopic psychokinesis (micro-pk) activity.

REGs generate a random walk from a sequence of 200-bit trials per second of binary [0,1] events. [The device flips a coin 200 times per second]

The bits are generated by random or unpredictable fluctuations in voltages as electrons tunnel through a barrier in a diode. High and low voltage samples are converted into 1 and 0 bits

The expected average from 200-bit trials having 0 or 1 outcomes is 100. Actual averages will be higher (or lower) than 100. The difference between an actual and the expected average is termed an “error”

A simple random walk is obtained by cumulating the errors (or normalized errors) from each series of bit trials. For some purposes, e.g. “goodness of fit” statistics, it is convenient to compute the cumulative error squared

REGs also display a parabolic boundary at the 95% confidence level. Hence random walks have a 1 in 20 chance of ending outside parabola bounds

At Princeton University, REGs were used to study global consciousness fields as part of the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program spanning nearly three decades. This global network of REGs is now managed by the Global Consciousness Project (GCP).

National Ghost Hunting Day has leveraged the GCP network of REG’s as part of its annual event since 2016. A parapsychology researcher (Williams) used GCP REGs in proximity to NGHD investigation locations

In 2016, Williams found evidence of a shift in the random walk at occurring near the outset of the NGHD 2016 event and a sustained downward trend. A similar pattern was predicted for 2017

In 2017, Williams again found evidence of a sustained downward trend among GCP-networked REGs. This downtrend prediction was extended to 2018; however the findings are awaiting publication

For NGHD 2018, the Maryland Paranormal Research ® REG experiment began before prior to communications checks over the conferencing network, which were scheduled at 9.30 pm.

The epoch commenced at 9:15 pm generating random walk trending above and below baseline levels that was characterized by a medium-high Z score (-1.033), and was statistically significant at the 16% level (one-tailed test), suggesting medium-high levels of psi functioning

Above baseline trending reached a peak and turning point around 10.25 pm as the first round of six standard questions were near complete. The crossover from above to below baseline trending occurred around 11.28 pm, prior to the close of the event at midnight. The downtrend then continued through much of the remainder of the investigation, punctuated with occasional rest periods

The graph appeared to mirror the global REG pattern observed for NGHD 2017 from the GCP network and conformed to predictions for the NGHD 2018 event. Although the experiment was conducted within the global NGHD event, our REG is not a node on the GCP network

The seeming convergence of REG outcomes at Burnt Mills with the GCP could have been driven by local influences framed through historical expectations. However, GCP historical REG trends were known prior to last year’s REG experiment, yet local outcomes did not conform to global predictions and results in 2017

Nonetheless, results continue to lend support for implicit psi, and for the notion of a “consciousness bridge” during the Burnt Mills West Special Park Ghost Expedition and NGHD 2018 event. The psi functioning is implicit, working on subliminal or unconscious levels. The conscious focus of participants is on the engagement or the ghost hunt

However, it is not possible to precisely know the sources of psi functioning (or field effects) on the REG, whether from post-mortem agencies or living agencies (experiment participants and/or experimenters themselves).

REG results in isolation can’t provide evidence of a haunting. A haunting involves recurring activity experienced in varied physical forms seemingly sourced to post-mortem agencies, appearing to have an affinity for a location or parts of a location

Instead REG results may be conservatively interpreted as a consciousness effect that at least bears some relation to efforts to communicate with post-mortem agencies, the attention and focus given to that communication, and perhaps from the communications themselves

The outcomes seen here are not unlike those encountered when REGs are positioned near sporting and concert events, where implicit psi from crowd engagement and attention appears to drive REG trending

The direction of bit scoring or trending in REGs is not fully understood and requires continuing experimentation

Various studies suggest it may be correlated with: goal orientation or intention; emotional states; the (psychological) valence of events; the extent of attention and focus; and innate psi ability

In linguistics and the semantic framing around graphs, “up” is considered “good” and “down” is considered “bad.” This kind of meaning, while natural, may not fit all circumstances affecting above or below baseline REG trending

If sustained REG downtrends were a signature for post-mortem agency (ghosts), this would imply that low-voltage sampling/scoring is somehow easier for this form of agency. However that is an unknown

Until more is known, the statistical significance of a trend perhaps matters more than its direction
