The best lesson I learned from 24 Hour Comics Day.

One thing that has stuck with me most from 24 Hour Comics Day is the reaction got from twitter while I was drawing. I was having to draw so fast that I knew I wasn’t drawing at my best, but every-time I’d share a new panel of the comic I’d get reactions like this:

Over the last few months I’ve been thinking and reading a lot about how people have been using the Internet to do horrible things to each-other. At times, threats, lies, and soul crushing hate seems to be coming from every direction online. It’s shocking how much damage someone can do to another person simply by typing into a computer.

The encouraging thing is, the reverse is also true.

Something as simple as a tweet, text, or blog comment can be so exciting! Every time I got a message encouraging me not to give up I was giddy! Damn right! I’m going to finish this damn thing!

What a way to use the Internet!

I use a service called Think Up which monitors my use of social networks to try and help me have a more rewarding experience online. One of my favorite stats that it surfaces shows me the number of times I thanked someone in a tweet recently.

Many of the internets problems are complex and extremely difficult to try and solve, but here’s something easy and simple you can do:

Pick someone on the web who’s responsible for something you think is good and send them a message of thanks. In fact, it’s a good thing to do right now.

The Chairs' Hiatus - Guest Post - Chris A'Lurede

Chris A'lurede, one of my oldest and closest friends, did this beautiful drawing of Mary and Nel to help support the Kickstarter to turn the story into a hardback 2 color book. It’s one of several awesome illustrations and new comics that’s going to be included in The Chairs’ Hiatus companion book, providing we reach our last stretch goal.

This illustration is also going to be in the liner notes to The Chairs first album reward, which you get if you back at the $40 level. It’s like the band photo!

I’m absolutely amazed and humbled by this drawing can’t thank Chris enough for it.

This gesture is reminiscent of Instapaper’s Like button for articles: episodes you like will be advertised to people who follow you on Twitter and who have decided to get Twitter recommendations from Overcast, but they won’t be automatically tweeted or shared anywhere else.”

I love the way this mechanism works to allowing users of the new iOS podcast client “Overcast” to recommend specific episodes to friends. I wish more services work this way.

The Chairs' Hiatus on Kindle

I’m proud to say that, after being unavailable on the platform for a long while, The Chairs’ Hiatus is back on Amazon for the Kindle.

This new version is considerably better than the old version. Back when the first version was posted, making sure a comic was readable on the dozens of different platforms that Kindle supported was a crazy task that required an enormous amount of spit and duck tape. Even after using every trick in the book and doing a great deal of hand coding the results were less than great. This new version looks good on every device I’ve tested it on and does not require any of those hacks.

On top of that I was able to pile on some features that weren’t possible before. For instance, if you double tap on any of the panels (on supported devices) the panel enlarges into what Amazon calls “Panel View”. Also, if you bought a printed copy of The Chairs’ Hiatus off of Amazon at any time you are now entitled to the Kindle version for free.*

Amazon does not allow me to offer the book as a “pay what you want” download like I can on my site, but the price isn’t much. I’m selling it for $2.99 out of which I get $1.05 and Amazon gets the rest.
