The pressing of 500 consists of the same colorways as the first except we’ve etched the lyrics on the b-side rather than screenprinting them, switched pressing plants, and changed up the number of each color as well.

Today marks the official street date for Self Defense Family’s newest EP, The Corrections Officer In Me. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to this record, you can stream it in its entirety on the Family Drugs bandcamp.

The record is available for purchase directly from the label along with an exclusive shirt design, or from Deathwish Inc who is selling an exclusive clear red color.

PunkNews presents the premiere of the new Self Defense Family song, “Pop Song Written on the Automall”, appearing on the band’s upcoming EP, The Corrections Officer In Me, out August 27th on Family Drugs.

Self Defense Family, formerly known as End Of A Year, is a mercurial collective whose shifting lineup consists of anywhere from three to ten members, hailing from around the US and the UK. The sound is rooted in the works of post-hardcore leaders like Fugazi and Lungfish, while “Pop Song Written On The Automall” also shows off a heavy Killing Joke influence (as does the cover of The Corrections Officer In Me, a nod to Killing Joke’s Brighter Than A Thousand Suns cover). Frontman Patrick Kindlon is a formidable wordsmith and also a DIY force who, in addition to his role in Self Defense Family, fronts Drug Church, runs Harm Reduction Records with Jami Morgan of Code Orange Kids, and helms Ashcan Press, a comics publisher. Self Defense Family has released music on a wide range of labels, including Deathwish Inc, Run For Cover, Hex Records, and now, Family Drugs.

Family Drugs is a new label co-founded by Jihad Rabah of Twelve Gauge Records and producer Sam Pura whose acclaimed series, “The Waiting Room”, has seen him work with Touche Amore, Loma Prieta, and many more. Family Drugs releases are distributed exclusively by Deathwish Distribution.

Self Defense Family 'The Corrections Officer In Me' 12"EP Pre-orders Now Available

Pre-orders for Self Defense Family’s one-sided 12"EP “The Corrections Officer In Me” are up on the Family Drugs Webstore along with an exclusive t-shirt design that’s surely going to appeal to both the “hip” and “punk” crowds.

The records are currently in manufacturing, afterwhich they’ll take a quick trip to Hellfish to have their b-side screenprinted with the record’s lyrics. Then it’s off to the Family Drugs cave where orders will be assembled, hopefully with many free goodies, and sent your way.

Our expected ship date is the week of August 27, which happens to be the record’s street date.

Pressing info:
300 - Red (Deathwish exclusive color, although due to a mix-up, a decent amount of you hooligans got this color)
200 - Green
100 - Blue

Note: For a brief period, “White” was listed as a color as well. This was just a fluke. People who ordered white will be given blue, unless they have a serious issue with the color, in which case we can substitute it for Green.

Family Drugs proudly presents the new release by the prolific Self Defense Family: an EP titled The Corrections Officer in Me.

A new collaboration between Twelve Gauge Records boss Jihad Rabah and producer Sam Pura, Family Drugs will release The Corrections Officer in Me on August 27th as a limited edition 12" EP and digital download.

Originally known as End of a Year, Self Defense Family is a self-proclaimed post-hardcore collective, renowned for doing its own thing by its own rules. The Family claims Cohoes, New York as a hometown but in fact members have hailed from as far as London, and the lineup, never identical from one record to the next, has ranged from a trio to a ten-piece. S.D.F.’s vast catalog features releases recorded across the globe, from Jamaica to Iceland to the Bay Area, and put out via a diverse list of labels, Deathwish Inc, Run for Cover, and Hex Records among them.

The Corrections Officer in Me was written and recorded in one 24-hour period with producer and Family Drugs co-owner Sam Pura at The Panda Studios in Fremont, California, during S.D.F.’s US tour of summer 2011. As vocalist Patrick Kindlon quips, it was “written and record under time constraints to produce material that is anxious and uncomfortable”. Completed in a day, the music finally surfaces two years later as he second-ever release on Family Drugs.

On The Corrections Officer in Me, the band nod to the world-weary storytelling of Lungfish and the driving tension of Killing Joke. Living up to the promise of inducing anxiety, they generate uncomfortable clashes of bombast and melody. Kindlon, a formidable wordsmith, spins impassioned yarns over hypnotic basslines and guitars that range from the aggro to the textural. From the call-to-arms of “It’s Not Good for the Man to Be Alone” to the quiet meditation of “The Bomber Will Always Get Through”, the intensity never lets up.

Further evidence of Kindlon’s silver tongue comes from his onstage banter, known to comprise as much stage time as the music, and from the band’s website, SelfDefenseMusic.com, which is set up entirely as a Q&A format wherein Kindlon and other members eloquently answer thousands of questions submitted by fans.

Outside of Self Defense Family, Kindlon writes comic books, co-owns comics publisher Ashcan Press, fronts another band, Drug Church, and runs the newly launched Harm Reduction label along with Jami Morgan of Code Orange Kids. A DIY force to be reckoned with, the chatty frontman sums it up neatly: “I try to stay busy.”

We are pleased to announce the release of an EP for New York post-hardcore outfit Self Defense Family. ‘The Corrections Officer In Me’ was recorded while the band was playing a string of West Coast shows in August 2011, and has patiently waited 20 months to finally surface as a 7"EP on Family Drugs.

Three tracks, 14 minutes, two sides.

Details for the upcoming Family Drugs 7"EP will be announced in the coming week or so. This EP was recorded by a very entertaining group of individuals a little less than a year ago (I think), and is now finally seeing the light of day.

Very excited to share the details of Family Drugs 002 as a reminder that we’re going to continue sharing music and art we feel strongly about, and not die off… yet.

They have only released one E.P. and a Waiting Room episode, and they’ve already racked up a ton of fans, mainly because this band features members of Sabertooth Zombie, All Teeth, Strike to Survive, and Not to Reason Why.
