How 'bored' Osama spent his last five years at Abbottabad hideout

Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden spent the last five years of his life behind the barbed wire and high walls of his mansion in Pakistan's Abbottabad city, his days consumed by dark arts and domesticity.

The Saudi-born terrorist, who had evaded capture for a decade, was killed in a top secret operation involving a small team of US Special Forces in Abbottabad, located 50 kilometres northeast ofIslamabad and 150 kilometres east of Peshawar.

According to a report, Bin Laden's Yemeni wife Amal al-Sadah- one of three wives now in Pakistani custody since the raid on Monday- told investigators that Bin Laden, along with his children and grandchildren, had moved from Haripur to Abbottabad towards the end of 2005.

Interviews paint a portrait of an isolated man, perhaps a little bored, presiding over family life while plotting mayhem, still desperate to be heard, and musing in his handwritten notebooks about killing more Americans, The New York Times reports.

US officials believe that Bin Laden spent many hours on the computer, relying on couriers to bring him thumb drives packed with information from the outside world, the report said.

Videos seized from Bin Laden's compound and released by the Obama administration on Saturday showed him wrapped in an old blanket watching himself on TV, like an aging actor imagining a comeback, the report added.

A senior intelligence official said that other videos showed him practicing and flubbing his lines in front of a camera, adding that the terrorist was interested enough in his image to dye his white beard black for the recordings.

Bin Laden once-large entourage of Arab bodyguards was down to one trusted Pakistani courier and the courier's brother, who also had the job of buying goats, sheep and Coca-Cola for the household, said the report.

While his physical world had shrunk to two indoor rooms and daily pacing in his courtyard, Bin Laden was still revered at home by his three wives, his children and the tight, interconnected circle of loyalists in the compound, it added.

Bin Laden did not do chores or tend to the cows and water buffalo on the south side of the compound like the other men. American officials figure that the household knew how important it was for him to devote his time to Al Qaeda, the terrorist organization he founded and was still actively running at the time of his death.

American officials say there is much they do not know about the last years of Bin Laden and the peculiar life of the compound, said the report.

Little is known about how Bin Laden, believed to be 54, managed his relationships with his three wives, the report said, noting that on the night he was killed, the Al Qaida chief was in his bedroom with his youngest wife- Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah- whose Yemeni passport shows her to be 29 years old.

According to US officials, there were also children in the bedroom. Pakistani intelligence officers have also said that a 12-year-old girl told them that she was a daughter of Bin Laden and that she saw the Americans shoot him.

US officials assume that during the last five years, Bin Laden recorded about a half-dozen audio messages a year from inside the house. The messages were meant for dissemination to the outside world, but to avoid detection, Bin Laden had no Internet or phone lines that he could use to send them.

LONDON (Reuters) - Apple has overtaken Google as the world's most valuable brand, ending a four-year reign by the Internet search leader, according to a new study by global brands agency Millward Brown.

The iPhone and iPad maker's brand is now worth $153 billion, almost half Apple's market capitalisation, says the annual BrandZ study of the world's top 100 brands.

Apple's portfolio of coveted consumer goods propelled it past Microsoft to become the world's most valuable technology company last year.

Peter Walshe, global brands director of Millward Brown, says Apple's meticulous attention to detail, along with an increasing presence of its gadgets in corporate environments, have allowed it to behave differently from other consumer-electronics makers.

"Apple is breaking the rules in terms of its pricing model," he told Reuters by telephone. "It's doing what luxury brands do, where the higher price the brand is, the more it seems to underpin and reinforce the desire."

"Obviously, it has to be allied to great products and a great experience, and Apple has nurtured that."

Of the top 10 brands in Monday's report, six were technology and telecoms companies: Google at number two, IBM at number three, Microsoft at number five, AT&T at number seven and China Mobile at number nine.

McDonald's rose two places to number four, as fast food became the fastest-growing category, Coca-Cola slipped one place to number six, Marlboro was also down one to number eight, and General Electric was number 10.

Walshe said demand from China was a major factor in the rise of fast-food brands. "The Chinese have been discovering fast food and it's such a vast market -- Starbucks, McDonald's... and pizza has hit China," he said.

"The way McDonald's has reinvented itself, adapted its menus, added healthy options, expanding the times of day it can be visited, for example oatmeal for breakfast... that allied with growth in developing markets has really helped that brand."

Nineteen of the top 100 brands came from emerging markets, up from 13 last year.

Facebook entered the top 100 at number 35 with a brand valued at $19.1 billion, while Chinese search engine Baidu rose to number 29 from 46.

Toyota reclaimed its position as the world's most valuable car brand, as it recovered from a bungled 2010 product recall. The survey was carried out before the March earthquake that caused massive disruption to Japanese supply chains.

The total value of the top 100 brands rose by 17 percent to $2.4 trillion, as the global economy shifted to growth.

Millward Brown takes as a starting point the value that companies put on their own main brands as intangibles in their earnings reports.

It combines that with the perceptions of more than 2 million consumers in relevant markets around the world whom it surveys over the course of the year, and then applies a multiple derived from the company's short-term future growth prospects.

Just download the Chrome extension and it will let you know who in your LinkedIn network works at whatever site you’re currently browsing in Chrome, whether it be Facebook, Google, TechCrunch or some stealth startup. It is amazing.

When you click on the Whoworks.at button at the right of your Chrome toolbar, your first 1st degree LinkedIn connections will show up first, followed by your 2nd and 3rd level connections. You can also toggle the extension to view people who have been recently hired or promoted at the company you’re visiting. Creator John Britton, who is also a developer evangelist at Twilio, plans on integrating Whoworks.at with other services including Facebook and Rapportive, which was the inspiration behind the service. Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.

Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

WHY?

The reason this happens:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.

It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a “Byte-Order Mark” (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)

2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)

This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

It's been a while, but Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan seem to be going strong. Kareena seems to have marriage on the brain. “I do not have marriage plans right now but yes, like other girls, I also want to get married. I will soon be a bride but before that, I will let everyone know about it. I do not have any traditional jewellery with me to wear at my wedding. My mom has given some of it to Karisma, but not to me because she feels I am not responsible! She sees me too busy with my work and feels that I cannot handle it well, but I wish to get it soon,” says Kareena.

She describes the rivalry between the sisters. “Since childhood Karisma and I have treasured small pieces of jewellery for our weddings. My dream is to wear a big diamond necklace on my wedding with a red and green outfit. It will be a big day for me,” she says excitedly.

Kareena also wishes she received more gifts. “I do not receive many gifts. I would love to have a big diamond necklace as a gift on my wedding,” she says, and already has a mental map of wedding plans. She says, “I would like to keep my wedding simple. I love the food and drink at the wedding; that day I will forget all about size zero and enjoy every bit of it!”

She shares a secret about Indian brides. “Indian brides want to be seen as more beautiful and attractive than any other guest at the party. Job interviews: Answer 10 tricky questions

THE formula for success in job interviews is not written in stone, especially when it comes to tricky questions. For instance if you are being interviewed for a sales position, a potential employer may ask you, “What would you do if a clients hinted at kickbacks?”

How would you respond? Will you appear shocked or deliver your answer with poise? Here are some suggestions on how to answer 10 such questions. Being prepared will give an edge, and not to mention, boost your confidence.

1. Tell us about a difficult relationship in your personal life you have had to cope with?

Don’t go into too many details about what happened, when and where. Don’t condemn the other person or defend yourself. Talk about what you had learnt from the experience.

2. Your boss-to-be is short-tempered, impatient and abrasive. Can you work with someone, of such a temperament?

Working with a short-tempered and very abrasive boss is not easy. Stating that you can effectively work under each and every person, in any and every situation will make you seem over-confident, and unrealistic. Do you get upset if you’re shouted or screamed at? Does it leave you de-motivated or disillusioned for long? If your answer to the latter question is in the negative, let the panel know that unpleasant experiences don’t weigh you down for too long.

3. Since you are in sales, some clients may hint at getting kick-backs. How will you handle such situations, since as a policy we don’t offer bribes?

When asked awkward questions like this, it helps if you plead ignorance. It may be also a test to check your views on bribes. They may ask if you have bribed anyone or what you would do, if you witnessed a government employee accepting a bribe. Tell them your personal experiences or views. Companies always respect individuals who are truthful and who possess a clear (not rigid) opinion on most matters.

4. Why have you fared averagely in Academics?

Many interviewers pay importance to what you have scored in your board examinations. If you had fared averagely and are asked to explain the reason, there’s not much you can do. It would help if you honestly admit that you have only yourself to blame (if that is really the case) and in future you will be clear about your priorities and work hard to achieve your goals.

5. Our industry requires a lot of social interaction with clients - over drinks and at parties. Are you comfortable with smoking and drinking?

Smoking isn’t cool. And many corporate head-honchos are teetotallers. It may be okay to say that you are uncomfortable around smokers and don’t enjoy social drinking. And do you really need to explain why you would not like to smoke or drink? No, it’s a personal choice.

If you’re applying for a job in an advertising or marketing consulting firm you may be asked if you’re okay with working on a tobacco or liquor account. If you feel you can never perform your job well, if the job involves promoting these products, then mention that you want to work on brands, which you are passionate about, and since you are convinced that tobacco or alcohol is injurious to health you may not be the best person to work on an account that involves actively promoting related brands.

6. Since you are a lady, and most of our clients are males, it is highly likely that some clients will try to be over-friendly. How will you handle such situations?

Will you be upset by such behaviour? If you’re confident that you can deal with such clients, only then tell the interviewers how you think you can be professional, yet not interact with clients who you’re uncomfortable with. Honesty is the best policy.

7. Tell us about your weaknesses?

What do you say besides the stereotyed ‘good’ weaknesses – impatience, over-enthusiasm? All of us have weaknesses, but do we need to mention all? And do you weaknesses surface all the time, or on occasions? For instance, while talking about your own traits such as a short temper or abrasiveness you can indicate that you display such traits or behaviour at some times only.

If your weakness is lack of time management, you could say that you are working on it and hope to overcome it over a period of time. Think about this and answer accordingly.

8. You will be replacing a person who we are letting go of. In the few weeks that you spend with him, you have to learn as much about his job so that you can continue doing his work effectively. Do you feel you are okay with this arrangement?

Not an easy situation to be in. While you can try your best to learn as much as you can, what will you do in case your predecessor does not cooperate and tell you all that you need to know? You could point out that you may need your organisation’s support, cooperation and intervention, if need be, in such a circumstance.

9. What if we hired you for one job profile and then change it within weeks?

Your response will depend on your future plans. If you’re interested in a sales job, because you want to pursue a career in marketing, then you’d obviously not want to work in finance or accounts. However, if you’re unsure which area interests you, and would like to learn about the different functions in an organisation, this might be a good opportunity to explore. You should preferably talk about why you prefer some roles or jobs. At the same time try to avoid talking about why you don’t like particular roles.

10. What salary do you expect? What if we told you we cannot pay you for the first three months?

State that since it is the start of your career, learning and experience are more important than salary. If you’re still asked to quote a specific amount give them a general indication on what you would like to earn. Don’t over-quote. If a company states that for whatever reason they won’t pay a salary for the first few months, make sure they are not one of those outfits, which exploit those who need work experience. If the organisation offers a good learning environment, tell them you’re joining the organisation for the valuable experience and you’re confident you’ll soon receive a salary commensurate with your performance.

No vulgarity in nudity, says Poonam Pandey

There is no vulgarity in nudity, said Poonam Pandey, the model whose offer to go nude before Team India if they won the Cricket World Cup shot the mercury up for the India-Sri Lanka final in Mumbai.

'We were all born nude. People take nudity as vulgarity. I see it in a different way. If I keep it as an offer for bringing the World Cup to India, which incidentally worked (laughs), I see no harm in it,' Pandey told IANS in an interview.

The model's offer hit the headlines prior to the April 2 World Cup final in Mumbai. A court case was also filed against her over the issue.

'After such a long time Team India was again very close to winning the World Cup and I truly wanted to them to be successful. It (going nude in front of the team) was a sort of offering from my side to our cricketers,' Pandey told IANS in an interview.

Does she believe that Team India won the World Cup just so it did not miss her offering?

'No, I won't say that. But I had prayed to God that if India brings the Cup I would strip in front of the team. I am yet to fulfil my commitment though,' Pandey said.

But her parents were certainly upset.

'Frankly, when I gave the statement my parents felt very bad. But when I explained to them why I made the offer, they were relieved a bit,' she said.

Pandey, an aspiring actress, is one of the contestants in the fourth season of the action adventure reality show 'Khatron Ke Khilladi' on COLORS channel.

If she could face the whole country over the nudity controversy, competing 12 pairs of contestants in the 'Khatron ke..' show is nothing, the model said.

'I am not afraid of anyone. I wasn't afraid when whole India was after me. There is no chance I fear a bit about the 12 pairs of contestants. On the contrary, I would love to make people fear me,' said Pandey.

Asked if she has any particular plan if she wins the reality show, Pandey said: 'I want to keep it a surprise.'

Will Delhi Unleash The World’s Fastest Indian?

On the eve of the India-West Indies match in Chennai, I visited the MRF Pace academy, a few minutes away not too far from the Chidambaram Stadium. Nestled in a leafy corner on the campus of the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School in Chetpet, the Academy wasn’t easy to locate.

But having arrived there, I realised it wasn’t the best time of the year to be visiting. The training season was a few months away. The Academy looked quiet, empty. On the practice wickets, a few youngsters were having an evening knockabout. I caught their attention as I walked past the Academy gates.

Upon closer inspection, one of them turned out to be an India discard from the mid-00s, now with an IPL team. It seemed he had gained weight. Or maybe the myth about TV adding 10 pounds works the other way around.

Two boys were in the academy gym. One of them walked out, and I chatted him up about what was going on at the academy. He said his name was Varun. He played for MRF; that he had been training at the Academy for nearly six years. After a small chat, he returned to the gym.

A few minutes later, the lone trainer present at the gym walked out. I asked him about any interesting talents who’d been to the Academy lately. He pointed to the boy I had been speaking to. “That’s Varun there,” he said.

“He is India’s fastest bowler.”

During the course of the evening, much was learnt about Varun Aaron, where he came from and what he was capable of.

The 21-year-old grew up in Jamshedpur and represents Jharkhand in domestic cricket. His claim to fame? In the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, in the final against Gujarat, Aaron clocked 153.4 KMPH, making him the fastest Indian bowler on record. [Here’s a fan video of the event]

Aaron had been with Kolkata Knight Riders the previous season. A stress fracture of the back kept him out of action. He was fit for the last four games of the tournament, but didn't get a break. With due apologies to Burt Munro, Delhi Daredevils, not he, can lay claim on the world’s fastest Indian now.

A lot of Indian pacers in recent times have made impressive beginnings, but then lost their edge quickly. Irfan Pathan bowled in the high 140s on his debut series in Australia. Munaf Patel was, at one time, touted to be the fastest in India. Zaheer Khan used to be much quicker, but has eschewed pace for control. The list goes on.

Aaron, however says, he's not about to give up on pace.

"Bowling quick is what I do best. I am not going to change my thinking because I will be bowling to international players in a Twenty20 match," Aaron told TOI recently, adding that "I can assure you that I'll be the quickest Indian bowler in IPL if I get the chance to play."

Aaron has recovered from the stress fracture. He says he has made corrections to his bowling action. It used to be left-heavy — the reason for the fracture — but he is now running in straight.

His action is uncomplicated, smooth, economical. Like Glenn McGrath, he has no exaggerated movement of limbs. He shuffles towards the bowling crease with his shoulders low, butt jutting out. There's no pronounced leap at the crease, just a little pop. He remains straight-on, unlike lots of express-quick bowlers. It would seem he's just another seamer running in to hurl a harmless delivery. But a really quick whip of the right arm and wrist follows, and the ball flies at speeds unheard of in Indian cricket.

25 wickets in 11 First Class games may not seem like much. But he's done better in limited overs cricket. He has two fivers in 11 games in which he has taken 23 wickets. He's learnt things from Dennis Lillee at the Academy and Wasim Akram at the KKR.

The Academy's former chief coach TA Sekhar is excited by Aaron. "He should be groomed properly and the national selectors should keep an eye on him," he said. Also, like most quick bowlers, Aaron is a strongly-built boy capable of big-hitting, as he has shown in domestic cricket. His batting strike rate in 50-over cricket is 158.

On Sunday, Delhi Daredevils play the first game of the IPL against Mumbai Indians. Delhi is a team without many big-ticket players. KKR didn't give Aaron a break. But perhaps, it is time for the Daredevils to let the 'Tatanagar Express' loose.

Hazare writes to PM over Lokpal Bill issue

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare, who is on a fast-unto-death for enactment of an anti-corruption bill to give wider powers to the Ombudsman, has written a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, saying that his government is misleading the nation.

72-year-old Hazare in his letter to Dr. Singh said: "It is being said that the government wants to talk to us and we are not talking to them. This is utterly false. Tell me a single meeting when you called us and we did not come. We strongly believe in dialogue and engagement. Kindly do not mislead the country by saying that we are shunning dialogue."

"It is being alleged that I am being instigated by some people to sit on this fast I am not a kid that I could be "instigated" into going on an indefinite fast. I am a fiercely independent person. I take advice from many friends and critics, but do what my conscience directs me to do. It is my experience that when cornered, governments resort to such malicious slandering. I am pained that the government, rather than addressing the issue of corruption, is trying to allege conspiracies, when there are none," he added.

Hazare further said: "Very weak versions of Lokpal Bill were presented in Parliament eight times in last 42 years. Even these weak versions were not passed by Parliament. This means, left to themselves, the politicians and bureaucrats will never pass any law which subjects them to any kind of objective scrutiny. At a time, when the country has witnessed scams of unprecedented scale, the impatience of the entire country is justified. And we call upon you, not to look for precedents, but show courage to take unprecedented steps."

"What are we asking for? We are not saying that you should accept the Bill drafted by us. But kindly create a credible platform for discussions - a joint committee with at least half members from civil society suggested by us. Your spokespersons are misleading the nation when they say that there is no precedent for setting up a joint committee," he added.

Hazare today criticized the Congress for 'misleading' the people by dubbing his agitation unnecessary and premature.

"The party's (Congress) statement is misleading people. Why is this agitation unnecessary and how is it premature? 42 years the nation has been in need of such a Bill. Why can't the government enact it?" said Hazare.

"I will observe fast-unto-death till the government agrees to form a joint committee comprising 50 per cent officials and the remaining citizens and intellectuals to draft the Jan Lokpal Bill," he added.

So it is vital to save your laptop battery life because it wouldn’t be cool always looking for an outlet to plug in your laptop when its battery is running out.

Here are the ten tips to save your laptop battery life.

Tip 1. If you are working in a place where there is an available power source, plug in the laptop. Access to any power source will help save battery through charging and make the battery’s life span last longer.

Tip 2. Make sure that free air is flowing through the laptop. Battery tend to be overworked when the cooling system is blocked, so make sure that the cooling fan functions properly and is not blocked for air to flow freely.

Tip 3. If you want the laptop battery to last longer than normal, reduce the CPU speed. You can do this by changing the battery’s power options to check balanced or power saver. These two options tend to minimize the processor speed.

Tip 4. You should also defrag regularly to make the hard drive work faster. Once the hard drive works faster it will demand less use of battery. Plug the laptop on a power source while defragging.

Tip 5. You can also lessen your use or plugging of USB and other external devices, including Wi-Fi and mouse because these devices can drain your battery. If you’re not using them just remove them from the connection or shut them down to avoid too much usage of battery.

Tip 6. You must also clean the battery contact of your laptop every month using a clean cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. Doing this can efficiently transfer power from the battery to the laptop.

Tip 7. Using the hibernation mode can also help save your battery while you do something else and make you resume your computer work in an instant.

Tip 8. Never do multitasking. When using your laptop, do one task at a time. Multitasking can drain out battery faster and you’ll end up not being able to finish anything at all.

Tip 9. Turning off scheduled tasks such as anti-virus updates online can also save your battery life span.

Tip 10. And lastly, decrease laptop volume or speaker when not necessarily needed.

The tips above are just few in saving your laptop battery life span. But if your battery is not really functioning as well as it did before, it’s time to replace the battery and purchase a new one. You may also purchase a new laptop with a more efficient battery span which can solve your problem.
