What do I mean by this? I simply mean that the keywords that you are using should appear in your ads and also on your landing pages. In fact your Landing pages should be optimised for your keywords.

Now you can”t do this if you haven”t set up your adgroups properly. The mistake many people make is that they don”t group their keywords into related groups of keywords. Generally they just have great long lists of unrelated keywords in their Adgroups.

If you”ve got a great big long list of keywords under one ad group then it’’s going to be very difficult to be able to target ads to particular keywords and to target your landing pages to those keywords.

For example take a look at this list of keywords. Mens shoes, mens new shoes, shoes for children, shoes for men, ladies shoes, childrens shoes, shoes for ladies, ladies new shoes.

They are all about shoes and as you can see I”ve got a mixture of keywords around men’’s shoes, ladies shoes, and keywords for children’’s shoes.

If I tried to target my ads and my landing pages to this list of keywords it’’s going to be difficult to get men’’s shoes, ladies shoes and children’’s shoes into a single ad.

What I really need to do is to take this list and break it down into ad groups. One for men’’s shoes, one for ladies shoes and one for childrens shoes.

My advice to you is take along hard look at your adgroups and try to break them down into small, highly related keywords groups. Then right ads and landing pages for each adgroup that are particularly targets to the keywords in the adgroup.

Now one of the common questions I get is asked is how many keywords should I have in each adgroup.

And my honest answer is that there is no exact number. Remember what you are aiming for here. It’’s relevancy.

If you are keeping your list of words highly related to each other then it’’s really difficult to see how you could have keywords lists of say more than 20 keywords at maximum.

Working in the London IT support for many years you tend to pick up a large number of anecdotes from others who work in London. It is only when you can get together with other IT support professionals that you find out about some of the funniest stories that people have accumulated during their careers. While we are professionals and know our stuff in the world of IT, it is still humorous when we get some of the stranger requests from business and domestic users in the London area.

A classic story from the IT support industry comes from the days of diskks and diskettes, a method of data transfer which is pretty much non existent nowadays. Anyway, back in the days of disks a friend of mine was working in his London office when a woman came in requesting IT support help with a five inch disk in her hand asking for information to be retrieved from it. Unfortunately for the hapless user, she was behind the times somewhat and the office had been using 3.5 inch disks for some time. On being told this, and before anyone could stop her, she took a pair of scissors to the disk to ”cut it down to size” so it would fit in the drive.

The IT support industry is especially full of humorous anecdotes, seemingly the majority of them in London. Another of my co-IT workers once told me story that has somehow found a place in the IT support industry hall of fame. During the eighties when computers were becoming popular in the financial district of London, this particular support worker was called by a man telling him that “his computer had frozen”. The IT guy, rather jokingly stated that it was probably because the computer was cold. Understandably, after he had headed to see this user to fix the problem the IT support worker was flabbergasted to find that user had wrapped a jacket around the computer in order to keep it warm. At this point the IT guy couldn”t help but laugh.

Those poor IT support technicians who work in the phone response centres probably have the worst time of it in terms uneducated users. Phone service are extremely profitable though, especially in the London area where my friend managed to make a mint with a company that sent out technicians and provided phone support for business and domestic users all around the London region. Some of the anecdotes he picked up along the way were also pretty valuable.

One of his workers had a caller who phoned in a state of panic claiming that the internet was under attack. The caller had apparently already called the London emergency services to report his findings and they had said to phone an IT support company instead. After calming the caller down the worker got to the bottom of the problem; the caller had inadvertently turned off the cookies after installing a new internet browser meaning that his internet connection would not work properly. A swift resolution was found and the somewhat sheepish caller then said to forget about the supposed attack.

The phone operator is inundated with rather pointless calls; a great call that has gone down in history came in asking the IT support worker where the computer’’s other cup holder was. The rather bemused operator asked sarcastically about “the other cupholder?” wondering about the sanity of the caller at the other end of the line. After the caller said it was the one that comes out of the PC it all became somewhat clearer. Once the technician had recomposed himself he told the caller that this was not a cupholder and was in fact used for inserting CDs into the computer.

With great stories like this I don”t think anyone will be able to say that the IT support industry is a boring one to work in. There are many in the business who often have to stifle their laughter at the enquiries of users. That said, it is a serious industry that provides a valuable service to computer users who are stuck with a problem.

I was talking to a client the other day about the complexity of building a compelling web presence. I was explaining that it was not just about design of the web page itself (which has to be good) or about the quality of the content (which has to be good), or the way it is promoted with blogs, articles wikis and other social media links (which has to be good), or the strategy which is followed (which has to be good). It isn”t just about the Search Engine optimization (which has to be good) or the management of the Pay Per Click advertising campaigns (which has to be good) or the keyword density and design of landing pages (which have to be good). Or even the way in which the various elements are stitched together in a coherent whole with a clear message (which has to be good).

It is all of those things and more, and they all have to be good. “But that’’s not fair” she said, “…how is a small business supposed to do all of those things and do them well?”

I explained that that is the new Web 2.0 paradigm. Having a snappy web site is not enough. The old idea of your web site being a sort of electronic brochure is long gone. Today you must not only be visible on the web but your presence has to compete with the very best and come out on top (i.e. at the top of page 1 for any given search). And what is more, having achieved the no.1 slot you then have to have the mechanisms to convert enquires to sales before you even know that the prospective customer is in the market. This requires a whole new sales approach and methodology.

Another acquaintance of mine has been resisting the idea of having a web site because his business is very much about a very specialized, personal service. I had to explain to him that the brutal reality is that not having a site was actually suspicious and that it was as much a business pre-requisite as a phone or a supply of paperclips.

Today you are competing on a global scale even if you are a one man micro business. It is not just the competitors you have always known who are threatening you. It is the big boys in your industry who have the wherewithal to construct a compelling proposition to two words typed into a Google search performed by one of your target customers. Just think back to the last bit of information you needed about a product or service. Did you phone around, go a directory or look for an advert in your local paper or trade magazine? Of course not. You typed 2 - 5 key words into Google and made your decision from there.

That is the way of the future.

Is it fair? No.

Will your customers make allowances because you haven”t got the resources of a mega corporation? No.

Can you stick with the old way of doing things and hope to get by? No. Sorry.

Much of the advice on internet marketing forums stresses that the fundamental part of building your business is to choose the right niche. What is a niche and how should you choose one? If you are just starting out or are feeling confused about niche marketing then this article is for you.

A niche is basically a section or part of a much larger market. Instead of focusing on a broad range of products or services a niche market focuses on smaller, narrow areas. For example, a company may decide to sell products for domestic pets. This is a large market that in order to develop and sell related products would require a lot of investment to achieve.

Alternatively the company may research the broader market and conclude that there is a consumer demand for products that provide training for their pets.

By focusing on this particular niche, this company can maximise its resources on one or two products to gain maximum output.

Although this is a real world example, the same principles apply in your online ventures. Before you invest time and money you need to research the market that you want to sell to. There is a common misconception that to be successful online you should choose a niche that you are familiar with, have an interest in and are passionate about.

Unfortunately this is bad advice. There is no point in building your business around your passion if there is no market for it. It can be very disconcerting to spend weeks developing a product only to find that the potential market is very small or even worse non-existent.

So how should you choose your niche? Firstly, take a look at the real world. Examine television, listen to the radio and look at what is for sale in the supermarket and the high street. If a product is popular offline, then there is a good chance this will be true online. For example, have you ever noticed the number of commercials or magazines that are related to weight loss? Type the same niche into Google and you will see a large number of websites related to losing weight.

Once you have found a niche that demonstrates a demand you need to conduct some basic online market research.

Begin by entering your niche keyword into a keyword research tool. There are plenty of these available and they provide data on how many times a phrase is entered into the search engines on a daily or monthly basis. They are not completely accurate but provide a rough estimation of the level of demand in your chosen niche. Next, enter the same phrase into Google to gage what the level of competition is. By analyzing these figures you can begin to understand what niche topics can be penetrated easily.

Finally, you should assess whether there is money in the niche. This can be demonstrated by the number of paid adverts on the results page. If advertisers are prepared to spend money, it is only because they are also making money.
