Vanilla/cinnamon french toast recipe

you will need

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract

1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon,

1 tablespoon butter

6 slices Bread

1. Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon in a medium bowl.

2. Melt butter in skillet over medium-high heat. Dip bread slices in egg mixture and brown each side in skillet (then i used an Eiffel tower cookie cutter and cut two out of each slice of toast just for fun) it didnt waste much just the crusts. Serve warm with maple syrup.

in my laduree cook book they use a vanilla pod to infuse some double cream instead of using milk, for traditional french toast. so you could substitute the milk and gently warm some cream in a pan with a vanilla pod and then once its to the boil remove from the heat and leave to infuse with the lid on for 20 minutes, then let it cool and mix it with the eggs and sugar.

these bundt cakes are so smooth and moist and taste amazing you can make a glaze or icing to go on them if you want but they were so nice on their own i didn't feel they needed it, i used half and half of green and blacks 70% cocoa and a normal cocoa powder so they were rich. the rose sugar i made last month by filling a jar with rose petals and sugar and storing it in a dark place to infuse the rose flavour into the sugar after a few weeks its ready to use.

recipe

150g butter

120g brown sugar

180g sour cream

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

60g ground almonds

150g plain flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

50g cocoa powder

preheat the oven to 160c

in a bowl cream butter and sugar until pale, using an electric whisk or stand mixer, then in a separate bowl beat the eggs and add the sour cream and vanilla extract and add to the butter mixture and mix in, then sift in the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, ground almonds and cocoa and whisk into a smooth batter,

the grease and flour the bundt pans, i used these rose and small bundt silicone moulds from wholeport.com

this recipe is good for one large bundt pan or about 10 individual small ones.

fill the moulds with the batter to the top and bake for 35 minutes. once cooked leave to cool and turn out onto a wire wrack, i then dusting them with some rose sugar.

recipe

450g strong plain flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

350g butter

1 sachet dried active yeast

50 caster sugar

10 table spoons warm milk

2 eggs beaten

lightly grease 3 baking trays, measure the flour and salt into a bowl and add 50g of the butter and rub in to form a breadcrumb like consistency. then add the sugar and yeast and mix in, form a well in the centre and add the warm milk and beaten eggs and stir in for form a dough, then turn on to the work surface and knead until smooth.

place in a greased bowl covered with cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for about an hour until it has doubled in size.

once if has doubled size, punch it down and knead again, then roll in to a long rectangle shape, take half the butter and add it in blobs 3/4 of the way down, then fold the bottom half up to the middle and the the top half over it and seal the edges, then turn it to the left so that the folded edge is on the left hand side, and roll it out and do the same again with the other half of the butter, cover in cling film and put in the fridge for 15 minutes.

now roll it out and do the same but with out butter, folding it and the rolling it twice.

cover it again and put it back it the fridge for another 15 minutes.

now cut it in to four pieces and the pastry is ready to use,

roll each bit out about half and inch thin,

for the filling i used different flavors,

i made an almond filling

using

100g ground almonds

100g caster sugar

50g powered sugar

a little beaten egg

i also used some jam and lemon curd.

here is how to fold it, (Mary berry cook book)

place the filling in the centre then fold the pastry accordingly

preheat the oven at 220c or 425f, then grease some cling film and cover them for 20 minutes while they prove and then once the oven is ready gently remove the film and brush with a little beaten egg and bake for 15 minutes.

once baked place on wire rack, while still warm drizzle over some icing and then add some almonds.

recipe

200g flour

pinch salt

110g butter

2 / 3 teaspoons very cold water

raspberries

1.3 cup sugar

1 tbsp corn flour

half a cup water

in a bowl rub the butter flour and salt together and then add two teaspoons of icy cold water and

mix in add another teaspoon of water if needed and then knead into a dough. cover in cling film and put in the fridge for 15-20 minutes

preheat the oven at 180c

flour the surface you are working on and roll out the pastry.

grease pie dishes, (i used small tart tins), and then place the pastry into them and cut off the excess.

to make the pie filling i added a 1 cup of raspberries, the sugar, water into a pan and cooked over a medium heat until the raspberries went soft, i added the corn flour to thicken it and then mixed it in, (you could always add jam to thicken it and give it more flavour if you want)

then add the filling and a few fresh raspberries into the pastry cases and roll out some more

pastry and cut it into a circles and place it on to the pie and pinch together, i used a cookie stamp on my lids.

brush the pastry with a beaten egg or some milk and bake for about 10/ 12 minutes.

hi everyone its the weekend again,

time just seems to fly by in the blink of an eye, happy mothers day for tomorrow, we celebrate mothers day in march here in England so i have nothing special planned this weekend i have to work.

recipe

in a jug, add warm milk, water, salt, 1 teaspoon of sugar and the dried yeast, set aside to ferment for 30 minutes until a foam forms on the surface.
in a large bowl add the remaining sugar, and flour and make a well in the centre. melt butter in the microwave. when yeast is ready add the beaten eggs, butter and vanilla extract to it, then pour it into the dry mixture and use a wooden spoon to mix until it forms a dough. flour your work surface and tip it out and knead it for 5 minutes. put it in a bowl and cover and leave for 45 minutes until it has doubled in size.
while you are waiting for the dough to prove, make the lemon sugar filling by melting butter in the microwave, and adding the sugar and zest to it, stir it until its combined and put to one side.
(keep it somewhere warm so it stays melted)

flour the surface and tip out the dough and knock if back out, then dust the rolling pin and roll it into a large rectangle.

then use a pastry brush and cover the dough with the lemon sugar mixture

then starting with the widest side roll it up into a long cylinder, then slice down the centre of the dough leaving one end still attached and braid it together and then arrange it in a Ring shape on greased dusted baking sheet.

cover it again and leave it for 45 minutes to double in size again,

preheat the oven at 170c, and bake for 30minutes.

while it is baking, juice 1 large lemon, and grate the zest then add 1 cup of icing sugar and mix together, once the loaf has cooked transfer to cooling wrack and then after it has slightly cooled drizzle over the icing and add some more grated zest.

its best served warm or eaten on the day of baking but can keep over night.

if you don't like lemon you can change the recipe and use cinnamon and brown sugar instead of lemon as the filling and make a large cinnamon roll

3 and 1/4 cups of flour

1/3 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

pinch of salt

3/4 cup butter

2/3 cup buttermilk

vanilla extract

2/3 bananas mashed

preheat oven at 218c or 425f

in a bowl combine, flour,sugar, baking powder/soda and salt and cinnamon, then add the butter and rub together. make a well in the centre and add the butter milk, vanilla and mashed bananas, then mix

together, flour surface and knead in to a dough, then mould in to ball, and line a baking tray with parchment or baking paper and place the ball of dough in the middle then flatten it in to a circle and cut into wedges.

bake for 10/15 minutes.

old book turned planter tutorial

i found this old book that was pretty much unreadable due to dirt on the pages in a charity shop, so i decided to use it for a planter, if you don't like the idea of cutting up books then a book that is damaged like this is perfect.

you will need

wide book

a cutting blade

ruler

glue

plastic bag

plants like cacti or succulents

draw on the shape you want to cut (i decided on a rectangle) and use the ruler and blade to score the shape and remove the pages, you will need to continue this until it is deep enough to plant in, then glue all the pages together, except for the top few. line the hole with a plastic bag and glue it down then turn the top pages back over and glue them on top so you cant see the bag, then add your plants into it, i then added some gravel to hide the dirt.

to water them use a pipette so you don't drip on the pages.

recipe

250g self raising flour

250g sugar

250g butter

4 eggs

2 tbsp milk

1 large lemon

1 pineapple

for frosting 1 cup butter

1 orange

1 half cup powdered sugar

first i grated and juiced the orange and lemon and put it in small dishes, then i chopped up some pineapple and added some juice in to another dish and put them to the side for later.

preheat the oven at 180c

in a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale, then add the eggs and whisk until its combined, then sift in the flour and whisk together, i added the milk to loosen it a bit and then separated the cake batter into two bowls,

in one i added the lemon zest and juice and in the other i added the pineapple pieces and juice.

then grease two round baking tins and added the mixture.

place them in the oven for about 20/ 25 minutes.

once cooked place the caked on a cooling wrack

next i added the butter and powdered sugar and orange juice and zest in a bowl and whisked it up to form the butter cream, i used it between the layers of the cake and on top.

to make the pineapple flowers

cut the outer part off of the pineapple and then use a melon baller or apple corer to remove the eyes of the pineapple, you will see round parts. then using a sharp knife cut really thin slices and place them on a baking sheet and put them in the oven at a low heat, i put mine in half way though the cake being cooked at 180c then turned it right down to about 100 110c and cooked for a further hour after the cake was cooked (turn them over half way through)

then take them out and put them in a muffin tin to curl the edges up and leave them to dry out, i put mine back in the warm oven in the muffin tin to dry them out quicker.

diy faux coral inspired by pottery barn

for the skeleton part of the coral i used

kebab sticks

masking tape

old pencil

to cover it i used

air dry clay

water

textured object ( i used a small grater)

paint in cream, brown

stiff bristled paint brush

decide on the shape that you want, i liked this piece of coral from pottery barn. bottom left

next time i want to make the large coral ear and the one at the top right.

once you have the base start covering the whole thing with clay, smoothing it together with water so there are no gaps. once it is completely covered, you will need make it textured, i didn't want it as prickly as the one from pottery barn as i wanted it to look old like it had been eroded by the sea, like you find on the beach, so i used the small side of a cheese grater and pressed it into the clay all over.

once it had dried (overnight) i watered down some paint and used a stiff bristled brush and flicked it all over it, then i did it with brown paint, then with a wet brush i blended it together.

chili chocolate papel picado cinco de mayo cookies

i wanted to make something for cinco de mayo and i came across photos of the tissue paper

papel picado banners and i thought i would try and cut a simple design on some cookies.

i decided to make chili chocolate cookies, but if you don't like chili chocolate and wanted to keep with the Mexican theme you could always make lime ones and colour them with green colouring, or make colourful ones with different flavors.

recipe

3 cups flour

2 tbsp baking powder

1 cup sugar

1 cup butter

1 egg

half cup cocoa powder

teaspoon chili powder ( or grated chili chocolate)

first in a mixing bowl you need to cream the butter and sugar, then add the egg and stir in, then sift in the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and chili powder (or grated chili chocolate if you are using that) and stir it in, then use your hands to knead into a dough.

this dough is quite moist, but it holds its shape really well when baking.

to make the papel picado flag shape, flour the work surface and roll out the dough and cut a rectangle and place in to a lined baking tray, its easier to cut it in place on the tray rather than try and move it after.

use a sharp knife and cut a scalloped edge and smooth the edges.

cut the edges so they are straight

use a small flower cutter to make the flower shape in the centre.

use a round tool and make the eyelet pattern on the scalloped part and use it to create the leaves on the flower

make holes to tread the string then. place then in the freezer while you preheat the oven to 180c (about 10 minutes) and then cook them on the middle shelf of the oven for about 7-10 minutes.

once cooked leave them to cool down before peeling then off the baking paper so they don't break.

hi every one, i cant believe we are at the last weekend in April already, although I'm really looking forward to may because (fingers crossed) my partner will start his new job.

lavender and honey ice cream with honeycomb chunks with out an ice cream maker

this ice cream tasted amazing, it was so creamy and full of flavour.

I was so easy to make and the ice cream base only consists of 3 basic ingredients,

and the best part you don't need an ice cream maker.

ingredients

2 cups of heavy cream

1 tin of sweetened condensed milk

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

to make the ice cream

in a stand mixer, using the balloon whisk attachment, whip the cream until it starts to thicken, then pour in the condensed milk and vanilla and continue whipping on a medium speed for 7 minutes.

to make the lavender and honey flavour i added, some lavender extract, dried lavender, 3 table spoons of honey, and crushed honeycomb which i made earlier, scroll down for recipe.

to make the honeycomb you will need

2 tbsp honey

170g sugar

2 tbsp water,

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

first grease and line a baking tray with parchment paper, i used cake tin.

in a heavy pan combine the sugar, honey and water and stir together, then leave on a medium/high heat with out stirring until large bubbles form, once the colour starts turning golden, (about 5 minutes) remove from the heat, and quickly ( carefully it will rise up) stir in the baking soda, just enough to mix it in, do not over mix it, then quickly pour into the prepared pan, do not touch it or spread it or the bubbles will pop.

after at least 1 hour, i smashed it up in to small pieces and sprinkled it into the ice cream and stirred it in.

pour the ice cream in to a loaf tin or an ice cream tub and put in the freezer, for the first 2 hours i took it out and stirred i every half an hour to make sure no ice crystals formed.

after 8 hours its ready to serve.

i found the recipe for the honeycomb here

i used home made lavender extract, i like the taste better than shop bought stuff as its not so over powering, its so simple to make just fill a bottle 1/4 full of lavender buds and then top the Bottle up with vodka and shake it, then leave in a dark cupboard 2 weeks taking it out to shake it every other day, then strain out the lavender and pour the liquid back in the bottle and its done.

recipe

for the kiwi and strawberry butter cream

2 kiwis

4 strawberries

200g butter

500g powdered sugar

125g sugar

125g butter

125g self raising flour

2 eggs

vanilla extract

to make the sponge, pre heat the oven at 180c, cream butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl until pale, then add the eggs and vanilla extract and whisk then sift in the flour and blend until a batter forms. grease two spring form cake tins and separate the batter and add pink food colouring to one and green to the other. put the batter in the cake tins and bake for 22 minutes.

to make the butter cream, peel the kiwis and cut them up into small pieces and then cut up the strawberries and blend until it forms a puree and pour through a sift. then in a bowl whisk the butter until its soft and pour the puree in, then add the powdered sugar and whisk until its firm.

once the cake is cool cover it with the butter cream

you will need
white crepe paper
pink paint
black tissue paper
plastic straw
green crepe paper
glue
small black pom pom

cut the white crepe paper into petal shapes and paint them with pink water colour paint, and leave them to dry
take the black tissue paper and cut three strips about 6 inches long and an inch wide, and cut lots of small slits on one side, then take the pom pom and add glue to it and then wind the cut tissue around it and glue it together and then roll up the end and glue it in into the straw.

then start gluing the petals on, do a layer of 3 petals then a layer of four behind it.
then cut a long strip of green crepe paper and add glue to the back and wrap it around the straw, covering where the petals join it.

heat oil in a shallow pan until it reaches 350 degrees. (you can make these in a fryer)

in a bowl mix the egg and milk and whisk together, in a separate bowl add the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder and blend together then add to the wet mixture and mix well, then to make the cakes pour it into a funnel over the pan in squiggly motions, (i poured the mixture in to a plastic squeezy bottle)

fry on each side for 2 minutes, them remove them and put them on a paper towel and dust with icing sugar.

hi every one its that time again, the weeks seem to fly by, before we start the party i wanted to
share this quick tutorial for a fabric rose

you will need

fabric

modpodge

paint brush

scissors

glue gun

cocktail stick

brooch pin

small polystyrene egg

paint fabric with modpodge both sides and leave to dry.

once it has dried the fabric will be stiff and bendy so you can cut it and curl the edges and it will stay in the position you want it, with out fraying.

cut 3 petals and glue them on to the polystyrene egg over lapping each other

then add another layer with the ends of the petals slightly rolled out, (use the cocktail stick to roll the fabric)

then cut the outer petals a little larger and glue them on. then to tidy it up take the cocktail stick and roll each petal again, then just glue the brooch pin on the back

homemade ice cream cones

recipe
2 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 tbsp butter (melted)
2-3 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup flour
pinch of salt
veg oil

before you do anything cut a circle out of some card and roll it into a cone shape, and hold it together with tape, then when the cones are ready you can roll them around it to make the shape.

in a bowl mix together sugar and eggs until frothy, then add the melted butter and milk and mix until smooth.
then mix in the flour to make a batter,
in a brush a frying pan with oil and put on high heat until the oil gets hot (2-3 minutes), then turn the heat down, and pour in some of the batter, i used a 1/3 cup at a time, rotate the pan to spread it, then cook until each side is golden and quickly remove from the heat and roll up into a cone and leave to harden

clay sea coral funnel vase tutorial

i have noticed alot of shops have sea inspired deor in at the moment like anthropologie

i love this time of year because i can get out my coral, and shells and decorate in a nautical theme so i made this vase

you will need
small plastic bottles
air dry clay
kebab skewer
bowl of water

clean out the plastic bottles and dry them, cut a large piece of clay to build up on, place the bottles on to the clay, to make them tilted place a ball of clay and on side of the bottle, and cover them, completely with clay leaving the tops open, then smooth down and use the end of the kebab stick to prick the Clay to make it textured, then take small balls of clay and place the kebab stick into the centre the roll the Clay into a cylinder and mould it on to the the bottom part, make them in different sizes, like the photo above.

i left it white but if you want it to be more realistic you can paint it,

banana oat muffins with coconut cream cheese frosting

recipe

2 and 1/4 cup flour

2 tsp baking power

1/2 tsp salt

2 ripe bananas

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup caster sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup oats

1/2 cup chopped nuts

preheat oven at 190c

in a bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt and set aside.

in another bowl mash the bananas until they are almost pureed and set aside.

either in a stand mixer or with a hand whisk, cream the butter and sugar until pale, then add the eggs one at a time,

add the milk and the vanilla and continue mixing, then add the flour and stir in with a spatula, don't over mix, now add the mashed bananas, nuts and oats and stir in and add to muffin pan.

bake for 20/25 minutes.

to make the coconut cream cheese, just mix 200g cream cheese, 400g icing sugar and 2 table spoons of coconut milk, then sprinkle some coconut flakes on top.

blackberry and cherry jam recipe

this was my first time at making jam and i was suprized how easy it was, i looked at lots of recipes for jam and then came up with this one, i added gelatine to make it set like shop bought jam, but you dont need this. also allot of recipes i found used granulated sugar rather than jam sugar so if you prefer to use that then you can.

in a heavy pan, add the water, sugar and crushed blackberries and cherries, and add the lemon juice
and grated zest, stir until the sugar has melted, place the sheet gelatin in about an half an inch of water and set aside, turn the heat down and use a hand blender and blend the fruit, i also used a potato masher, then cut the ends off the vanilla pod and score it up the middle and put it in the pan, after the gelatin has been soaking for at least 5 minutes add it to the pan and stir. leave it on a low heat for 5 minutes an stir it again, it should start thickening up.
once done pour it into jars and rest it in a bowl of ice water for 30 minutes before putting it in the fridge.

pear and elderflower doughnuts

recipe
either one fresh pear, or some tinned pears
250g self raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
45g sugar
1 tbsp sunflower oil, (plus extra for frying)
100ml milk
1 egg
elderflower cordial
icing sugar

in a bowl, sift the flour, sugar and baking powder and put to one side.
in a separate bowl whisk the egg, milk and oil together.
take the pear and grate it with a fine grater (like a Parmesan grater)
in to a cup then, pour it through a sift into a bowl to remove any juice (keep the juice for the icing,
add the milk/egg mixture to the flour and add the grated pear and knead into a dough, add extra flour if needed so its the consistency that you can roll out.
flour your work surface and roll out the dough so that its half an inch thick and cut it into circles, then cut a smaller circle out of the centre.
in a frying pan heat oil until it reaches 350f and fry the doughnuts for a few minutes on each side and then transfer on to a paper towel (or you can use a deep fat fryer)
leave to cool.
while you are waiting for them to cool make the icing.
in the bowl with the juice from the pears and some elderflower cordial, i used about a teaspoon. and then add the icing sugar i used about 250g / 300g, mix together, then once the doughnuts are cool dip them into the icing and leave to set.
