“Bringing the Green Living Ideas and Twilight Earth site networks together was a natural fit all around,” said Sean Daily, Simple Earth Media’s CEO and President. Daily continued, “Adam and I share a very similar outlook and perspective, not only on the type of editorial content that is necessary and relevant for the future of humanity and the planet, but also in regards to the types of companies we want to work with as sponsors and advertisers supporting our network. We are also really fortunate to have a combined staff of the best writers in the business.”

In addition to the sizeable daily web traffic and newsletter subscribers of the constituent sites, the combined social media audience and following of the Simple Earth Media network is unprecedented, totaling over 50,000 Twitter followers in addition to tens of thousands more friends and subscribers on FaceBook, LinkedIn and other social media platforms — making it one of the largest online environmental social media communities in the world.

“Our success is measured on the change that we make in helping to protect and nurture our environment, our families and our health,” says Adam Shake, founder of Twilight Earth. “It’s not about saving the environment, it’s about saving ourselves. Clean air, water and soil are basic human rights. We’ve got to continue to fight for those rights.”

Simple Earth Media employs some of the Web’s best-known and most highly-regarded environmental writers, including Derek Markham, Jennifer Lance, Ariel Schwartz, Susan Kraemer, Scott James, Wendy Gabriel and numerous others. The company’s tagline is “New Media Making a Difference.”

In West Virginia, Massey Energy has begun blasting operations on Coal River Mountain despite deep opposition from environmental groups and critics of mountaintop removal mining.

The Brushy Fork impoundment is an enormous retention pond holding 8.2 billion gallons of toxic coal slurry waste. If the impoundment were to fail due to the blasting, hundreds of lives will be lost and thousands more will be in jeopardy from an enormous slurry flood.

This four-minute video clip, featuring the voices of local residents Judy Bonds and Gary Anderson, describes in vivid terms the battle to save Coal River Mountain.

Mountaintop removal / valley fill coal mining (MTR) has been called strip mining on steroids. One author says the process should be more accurately named: mountain range removal. Mountaintop removal /valley fill mining annihilates ecosystems, transforming some of the most biologically diverse temperate forests in the world into biologically barren moonscapes.

However, Massey Energy has plans to mine 6,000+ acres of the mountain.

Over 1200 miles of streams have been buried and destroyed and countless mountains and ridge tops have been blown up–gone for all eternity. The Bush administration has altered laws to encourage and accelerate the destruction. The price of coal has doubled and the destruction of our watersheds is accelerating and spreading out like cancer. Our state and federal agencies charged with protecting our environment are liquidating our mountains.

Tell West Virginia Governor Manchin to stop the blasting.

We are losing. Our loss is not only for our own generation–but for future generations. Where there once were water producing mountains – now there are barren scraped-biologically-dead toxic wastelands. Water is going to be more important to future generations than coal. You cannot drink coal. The Pentagon has predicted than many of the future wars on our planet will not be fought over coal or oil–but for water. The lack of clean drinking water is already a global problem for humanity – as our population increases it will only get worse. The destruction of water producing mountains is not only a crime of the present–it is a very real attack on the future generations.

Gary Anderson talks about the Coal River Mountain Wind Farm

We cannot afford to continue losing this struggle. A few already rich coal company executives are getting wealthier at the expense of us all. The acceleration of mountain top, side and ridge removal is a curse on the future and present generations. We need your help.

130,000 people in the U.S. die every year from fine particulate matter from Coal burning power plants. How does it effect your families indoor air quality?

As a parent you need to be vigilant to ensure the health and well-being of your family. My current crusade, now that our oldest has started kindergarten, is to ensure the indoor air quality at her school is as healthy and safe as possible for her and her classmates.

As I was reading through some current environmental health research (so I could include salient information as I craft a letter to the principal of her school), I ran across a piece at NRDC Switchboard entitled EPA: Coal Ash Poses Significant Health Risk. Being the queen of the side-tracked, I began reading. Did you know the nation’s power plants spew out 130 million tons of coal combustion waste every year?

A recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigation reports:

The total amount of toxic pollutants currently being released in wastewater discharges from coal-fired power plants is estimated to be significant and raises concerns regarding the long-term impacts to aquatic organisms, wildlife, and human health that are exposed to these pollutants.

An increasing amount of evidence indicates that the characteristics of coal combustion wastewater have the potential to impact human health and the environment.

Many of the common pollutants found in coal combustion wastewater (e.g., selenium, mercury, and arsenic) are known to cause environmental harm and can potentially represent a human health risk.

Pollutants in coal combustion wastewater are of particular concern because they can occur in large quantities (i.e., total pounds) and at high concentrations (i.e., exceeding Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs)) in discharges and leachate to groundwater and surface waters.

The writers at Twilight Earth have endeavored to educate all of us on the evils of coal.

We’ve talked here about Archaic, Inefficient, Dirty and Deadly Coal=Boiled Water=Electricity.

We’ve discussed how Clean Coal Makes For Dirty Politics.

And illuminated Coal’s Health Costs In Appalachia Outweigh Economic Benefits.

Now I’m going to bring it all a little closer to home.

According to the EPA approximately 630,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year with dangerous levels of mercury in their blood. Studies have shown mercury exposure can lead to kidney damage, learning disabilities, attention deficits, behavior problems and lower intelligence.

How is the mercury contaminating our babies?

You probably already know where I’m going with this. According to the EPA, the biggest source is coal-fired power plants. The mercury is sent out into the air and discharged into groundwater and surface water (through wastewater).

Finding clean, healthy, renewable energy sources is important to all of us. Everyone wants clean indoor air and outdoor air for our children. Let your voice be heard.

You can make a difference right now. Send a message to the Obama administration to immediately halt the blasting on Coal River Mountain. Stop Massey Energy, the nation’s fourth-largest coal company, from another massive mountaintop removal operation.

On the eve of the anniversary of the opening of the Berlin Wall, German Chancellor Merkel is calling on the world to reach a deal to combat Global Warming.

Being the first German leader to address a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate in 50 years, Chancellor Merkel rallied against the “walls of short-sighted self-interest” as she urged the US to fall in line with Europe over global warming.

Her speech comes just weeks ahead of crucial talks in Copenhagen during which an international agreement needs to be reached.

Mrs Merkel took the Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, on November 9th, as a peg on which to urge the US to overcome new barriers preventing progress in today’s world. She referred to obstacles preventing a united front against climate change as “the wall that seemingly separates the present from the future”.

She added: “This wall bars from view the needs of future generations and prevents us from doing what is urgently necessary to preserve the basis of our very lives and our climate.”

As she spoke many members of Congress broke into spontaneous applause. But in an indication that some US politicians still prefer profits over planet, a large section remained motionless as she called for binding international standards.

Kilimanjaro has lost 85 percent of the snow and ice that makes up the mountaintop glaciers and could be completely bare in 15 years.

A study comparing new measurements with those taken in 2000 show that a layer of Kilimanjaro ice between six and 17 feet thick has vanished since then.

Not only are the mountain’s glaciers retreating at an unprecedented rate, but the remaining ice is thinning.

Scientists made their forecast after combining data from aerial photographs and ground measurements of ice thickness.

The team, led by Professor Lonnie Thompson, from Ohio State University in the US, pointed out that the snows had survived intact for 11,700 years.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has just announced its second annual Growing Green Awards for 2010.

Do you know someone who has made extraordinary contributions to the sustainable food world? (And, I’m not sure being a good eater meets any of the criteria.) If you do, nominate them to be honored for their excellent work in sustainability.

Through this national award, NRDC will recognize extraordinary contributions that advance ecologically integrated farming practices, climate stewardship, water stewardship, farmland preservation, and social responsibility from farm to fork.

But hurry! Nominations are due by December 4th, 2009.

The Growing Green Awards panel will consider candidates from across the country (candidates operating outside of the United States will not be considered). Individuals in the following four categories are eligible:

Food Producer: Farmers or other food producers, including aquaculture, who employ innovative techniques to sustain agriculture, the natural environment, workers and community;

Business Leader: Entrepreneurs who effectively use the marketplace to promote sustainable food systems, develop infrastructure that enables producers to be more sustainable, or advance sustainable innovations anywhere along the supply chain from farm to fork;

Thought Leader: Visionaries who advance sustainability as it relates to food through creative research, public education, and outreach.

Water Steward: Farmers or other food producers who have made extraordinary contributions in demonstrating water efficiency, sustainable water use and the protection of water quality.

Some wonderful sustainable food leaders make up the Growing Green Awards selection panel including Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Nora Pouillon, Chef and founder of Restaurant Nora the nation’s first certified organic restaurant.

Even if you’re not eligible for any of the categories, you can make a difference every day by making smart, sustainable choices at the grocery store, by frequenting your local farmer’s market and by asking questions at your local restaurants. If you need some help finding sustainable food in your area consult the Eat Well Guide.

Twice the size of California, Canada’s Boreal Forest is being set aside to collect and store Carbon, effectively acting as a planetary lung.

Soaking up an incredible 22% of the carbon stored on the earth’s land surface, the Boreal Forest is a seemingly endless expanse of evergreen forests.

The conservation drive bans logging, mining, and oil drilling on some 250 million acres. The sheer scale of the forest conservation drive is somewhat of an anomaly for Canada, whose government has been accused of sabotaging the global climate change talks by its development of the Alberta tar sands and its refusal to make deep cuts in its greenhouse gas emissions.

A report by the International Boreal Conservation Campaign said the forests, with their rich mix of trees, wetlands, peat and tundra, were a far bigger carbon store than scientists had realized.

“If you look across Canada one of [the boreal forest's] great values to us globally is its carbon storage value,” said Steve Kallick, director of the Pew Environment Group’s International Boreal Conservation Campaign. “There is so much carbon sequestered in it already that if it escaped it would pose a whole new, very grave threat.”

It is unclear how long Canada’s forests can continue to serve as carbon vaults. “As the climate warms, the place is going to dry up. There will be a problem with insect infestation. There is going to be increased natural carbon release due to fire or wetlands drying up,” said Sue Libenson, a spokeswoman for the International Boreal Conservation Campaign.

But she added: “The general premise is that there is still a hell of a lot of carbon in there.” Its release would be a climate catastrophe.

Canada’s 1.3 billion acres of boreal forest store the equivalent of 27 years’ worth of current global greenhouse gas emissions, a Greenpeace study found. The destruction of those forests, scientists warn, would be like setting off a massive “carbon bomb” because of the sudden release of emissions.

“Canada is torn between wanting to promote the tar sands and make money off it now, and wanting to live up to its promises under the Kyoto accord. But as far as protecting carbon rich ecosystems, particularly the boreal forest, Canada is a world leader,” said Kallick.

I had the distinct honor of meeting and speaking with Bo Webb, Mountaintop Removal Protester and Activist, outside the EPA offices in Washington DC today.

It was a chilly and overcast day in Washington DC, when environmental activists from Appalachia got out of their cars and vans and started pounding makeshift cemetery grave stones into the lawn of the Environmental Protection Agency lawn.

As a small crowd of Federal Police gathered about 20 yards away, Bo, who’s had his life threatened and was almost run off the road one time while driving his car, told me about his fight to save not only the mountains, but the lives of West Virginians. “It’s essential to stop the mining on Coal River Mountain. Coal River is the proposed site of a potential 328-Megawatt wind farm, which Massey Energy started blasting this week. “

Kate Rooth of RAN said in a press release put out earlier in the day, that “The fate of Coal River Mountain and our clean energy future is in the EPA’s hands. By intervening to stop the blasting and protect our nation’s clean energy resources, the Obama Administration has a chance to show that it will stand up for the nation’s new energy priorities and green jobs even against persistent dirty coal interests; this is how we protect the economy and the planet.”

In recent months, the EPA has set out a number of new restrictions on mountaintop mining practices, including a recent decision to revoke a permit for the Spruce Mine in West Virginia due to water quality impacts; the first time since the passing of the Clean Water Protection Act that the agency has revoked an already approved mining permit. Environmentalists believe that the urgency of the Coal River Mountain case necessitates that the EPA intervene, and follow the Spruce Mine precedent.

Coal River Mountain gained national notoriety after a study showed that its peaks and ridges have enough wind potential to provide 70,000 households with electricity, support 700 long-term green jobs and give back $1.7 million in annual county taxes. Over the objections of the local community, the site has been granted permits for mountaintop removal. Massey Energy began dynamiting peaks this week, which will destroy any hope for the proposed wind farm unless the EPA intervenes.

“Every day, more than 3 million pounds of explosives are detonated in our state to remove our mountains and expose the thin seams of coal beneath,” said Bo. “President Obama, I beg you to re-light our flame of hope and honor and immediately stop the coal companies from blasting so near our homes and endangering our lives. As you have said, we must find another way than blowing off the tops of our mountains. We must end mountaintop removal.”

If the blasting at Coal River Mountain is allowed to continue, mountaintop removal coal mining will endanger hundreds of people living in the valley below, as the project requires blasting dynamite less than 100 yards from the largest coal sludge impoundment in the country. Massey Energy’s own assessment indicates that if the impoundment, an earthen dam, is breached more than eight billion gallons of coal slurry will spill out endangering hundreds of people who would have less than five minutes to evacuate.

Called the worst of the worst coal mining, mountaintop removal decapitates Appalachian peaks, denudes lush forests, and dumps debris into valley streams — destroying or damaging more than a thousand miles of mountain waterways to date.

NASA, and the world, have a problem. It’s ICESAT-I (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite) which provides critical data on rapidly changing ice volume and thickness, is going to go offline this year.

The launch of its replacement, the ICESat-II, isn’t scheduled until 2014-15. This creates a large data gap in laser observations of the Arctic changes. How is NASA going to cover the gap? Introducing “Operation Ice Bridge.”

The Ice Bridge flights will help scientists maintain the record of changes to sea ice and ice sheets that have been collected since 2003 by ICESat. The flights will lack the continent-wide coverage that can be achieved by satellite, so researchers carefully select key target locations. But the flights will also turn up new information not possible from orbit, such as the shape of the terrain below the ice.

Operating from Punta Arenas in the extreme south of Chile, NASA will fly its largest aircraft,—a DC-8, a 157-foot-long airborne laboratory—to study changes in Antarctica’s sea ice, ice sheets and glaciers.

“Space-based instruments like the ICESat lasers are the only way to find out where change is occurring in remote, continent-sized ice sheets like Antarctica,” said Tom Wagner, cryosphere program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. “But aircraft missions like Ice Bridge allow us to follow up with more detailed studies and make other measurements critical to modeling sea level rise.”

With the DC-8 limited to just a few hours over Antarctica on each flight, mission planners have carefully selected targets of current and potential rapid change.

One such target is West Antarctica’s Pine Island Glacier. “That glacier is one of the great unknowns because its bed — where the glacier contacts rock — is below sea level,” Martin said. “So if there’s a surge or dramatic change, seawater could get under the glacier and we could be looking at very rapid change.”

However remote, Antarctica is an important link in the Earth’s climate system and it is home to 90 percent of the freshwater supplies on Earth and could thus contribute greatly to sea level rise.

Planet Green, those eco-people who bring us Planet Green TV and Treehugger.com among other eco-wonderful sites, has done it again. This time they’re making our building and renovating choices easier.

They’ve come up with a new Green Materials Guide. It’s a fabulous source for information on wall coverings, flooring, insulation, windows, heating and cooling, bathrooms, kitchens and general green building techniques.

For example, do you know how to pick the right paint? According to the Green Materials Guide, “… paint can also be a way to add toxic airborne chemicals to your home… if you choose the wrong ones.” So it’s more than just eggshell vs. eggplant. It’s low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vs. painting with toxic airborne chemicals.

“VOCs are the enemy. They come primarily from the pigment used to color the paint, and, as soon as the paint is exposed to air, they volatilize (sort of like evaporation) into the air, contributing to some serious indoor air pollution.”

The Green Materials Guide can direct you to the best choices available today to avoid these toxins.

Check out their buying guide for interior paint and more painting tips. GreenSeal also has a good list of safe, healthy paints.

Upward and onward, do you know the first thing about buying green kitchen cabinetry? Well, the Green Materials Guide has you covered. They explain the pros and cons of solid wood cabinets, bamboo, engineered and particle board cabinets. Did you know that the glue in a lot of particle board cabinets contains formaldehyde? That doesn’t make for healthy indoor air. But don’t worry, the Guide will walk you through all your choices.

Don’t settle for materials that negatively impact our planet, consult the Green Materials Guide before you start your next green home project.
