What I’m talking about:

Nola, a witch with mediocre talent but potential to be more, moves to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky from Ireland after one too many "nudges" from her deceased Nana. She leaves behind her doting boyfriend and the safety of her family with the purpose of recovering four magic items that her Nana entrusted to her lover from years ago--Nola’s unknown grandfather.

Immediately Nola earns the trust of and makes friends with the locals, who are critical in Nola’s quest to find the lost items. In addition, Nola befriends her hunky neighbor, Jed, who lives in the other half of Nola's rental home. Jed’s sexy body and easy-going nature has Nola second guessing the “normal” boyfriend she left back home.

I am a first time reader of Ms. Harper’s books, and I can say with certainty that A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses will not be my last! I completely enjoyed Ms. Harper’s writing style, humor, and world-building. Although this book falls within a series, which is a spin-off of another one of her series, I never felt lost or that I was missing critical back story.

A Witch’s Handbook is told from the first person POV of Nola, which gives it a “chic lit” feel, but it’s not dumbed down or overly silly. After a rough childhood (horrible mother!) and armed with the desire to “be normal,” Nola tries to hide who and what she truly is. However, she is intuitive and smart, and coming to The Hollow allows her to discover this for herself. I enjoyed watching Nola laugh with her new friends/family and learn to love herself and all the quirks that come with being a McGavock witch. Her sense of humor is outstanding (for example calling an opossum trapped in her cupboard a “rodent of unusual size”), and her nature is light and fun.

At the center of the tale is the need to recover the four everyday “magical” items. We learn that these items hold the key to keeping the Kerrigans, who are the "black magic" members of the McGavock family, from gaining power over Nola’s family and wrecking havoc in the world. The story includes a bit of mystery as strange things start happening around Nola, to include a break in of the bookstore formerly owned by her deceased grandfather. Adding to the tension is a looming deadline before which Nola has to locate the items. Altogether, it created a bit of excitement, suspense and tension which had me constantly trying to figure out the who, what and why’s.

Probably the best thing about the book is the troupe of locals who become Nola’s adopted family. The banter with local vamps Andrea and Jane lend humor to the tale, but also allow us to see different sides of Nola. Andrea’s husband, Dick, is another source of comic relief, stemming from his silly actions when dealing with Nola. Then there is Jed, who has a “devil may care” attitude one moment, while in the next, he leaves flowers for Nola at her windowsill. Watching their romance develop was sweet and sexy. I adored Nola and Jed, and I loved how she helps him with a “family problem” that is pretty humorous. In the end, the story chronicles how everyone comes together in friendship and love, which makes this book such a feel good read.

The entire story was well-scripted, thoughtful and humorous. From the process of searching for the artifacts to the budding friendships with Jane, Andrea, and the rest. Her flirtatious nature with Jed, and her humanity work at the local clinic. I also enjoyed the slow uncovering of Nola’s childhood memories, to include how horrible her mom was and conversely, how loving her father was.

A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses is a wonderful story! Although overall the book is light and fluffy, the humor and plot are sharp, making this a worthy read. I enjoyed almost every moment of the story, smiling on the inside and out. It wasn't deep or emotionally gripping, but fun and warm. It is entertainment for the sake of joy. There was an interesting and exciting plot behind the fun, and the humor made me chuckle several times over, possibly recognizing it as something I would do or say. Everything was well-written, with no loose ends or side stories left dangling. I most certainly plan to visit Half-Moon Hollow again.

This is gonna be a down-n-dirty review, my friends. With only 162 pages, Kiss Across Time packs a powerful punch. World-building, character-building, and the construction of powerful and intricate relationships are carefully woven into the novella. Each fact, detail, sensory impression are purposeful and meant to tantalize the reader. And tantalize, Ms. Cooper-Posey did.

I'm pretty sure that the hot rockstar vamp and his partner-in-immortality were two of the most intuitive characters I've read in a long time. Brody and Veris are magnetic personalities. I was simply drawn to them, and cannot wait to read more about them! With Arthurian, Saxon and Viking references, the historical aspect wasn't over-done, and greatly added to my enjoyment of the title (because I'm a bit of a Viking, Saxon and Arthurian legend geek, naturally).

Taylor, the professor-next-door that was canned from her university position before being granted tenure because she dared to think differently. I was really intrigued by the premise of Taylor's thesis, and would LOVE to spend time hanging out with someone like her... except I'd want to discuss the literature aspect versus the historical aspect. Seemed like she'd be the type that would be able to discuss both. One thing that concerned me about Taylor was the fact that she seemed content to be 'bought out' of her theory... you'll understand when you get to that part of the story.

Menage. Smokin' HOTTTT! What I really enjoyed about this trio was the fact that Brody and Veris had an existing relationship, and Taylor appeared to fit seamlessly into what appeared to be a love and respect-filled pairing. It looked like they'd been traveling through time simply waiting for Taylor to arrive. Readers will love the time traveling, as well as what it represents for the trio.

I'm eager to read subsequent titles in Ms. Cooper-Posey's Kiss Across Time series. Book 2, Kiss Across Swords is available June 1, and a third title, Kiss Across Chains is slated for July 1. Sounds like I've got myself at least two fabulous titles to enjoy in the summer sun!

Immortal Eclipse is Pet Cemetery meets Picture of Dorian Grey meets Charmed. Three of this reviewer's favorites. Expertly written in first person, present-tense, Ms. Soule weaves the tale of Skylar, her great losses, and Dorian. Given that great personal loss has found them both, it's no wonder they're seriously attracted to one another! HEAT INDEX: 1 out of 5. Some steamy kisses, heavy petting...nothing to write home about. I'd almost put this in the older YA or that 'new adult' category, except it’s paranormal.

What's not to like about a sassy, spunky, sexy & snarky main character – the voice of the story – that has a serious shoe fetish and considers her fashion-sense a weapon?!?! Skylar certainly embodies the heroines that I've grown to love from some of my favorite series. Leaving behind her home of New York City, Skylar travels to California to stake her claim on the homestead that was bequeathed to her by her recently deceased uncle, Gerard. Upon consultation with the estate lawyer, Skylar learned she needed to stay 30 days in order to collect her inheritance. Yay! Time for a vaca, and a welcome break from her insincere existence in NYC.

Here's where things get flat-out weird. Murder and mayhem ensue upon arrival. It seems as though Skylar is the harbinger of death, where Summerwind and it's residents are concerned. Not to be outdone, blossoming love is on the horizon, even though death knocks at the gates of Summerwind. Dorian is conflicted by the mere presence of Skylar, and has to figure things out, apparently. Even though I'm kind of over the 'it's in your best interests if we're not together' trope, it sorta works for me in this title. Dorian is, of course, the resident hottie. The caretaker of the estate, he's got his fingertips on the pulse of what's going on. Superficially, anyway. I actually shouted at Dorian a couple times, 'Dude, get IN there!' Ms. Soule could have definitely made this a dirty, dirty book, but kept things chaste and sweet. I'd let my 16 year old daughter read it (if she read stuff like this). Dorian has many admirable traits, including his chivalry – he always seems to be swinging in to save the damsel-in-distress. Selfless is another term I'd use to describe him. Ultimately, however, Dorian keeps a secret for most of the title that could be his undoing when it comes to his relationship with Skylar. And damnit! It would've been a complete deal-breaker for me, had I learned that news at that specific point-in-time!

Our cast of supporting characters seemed to dwindle in size as the novel drew to a close. Here's a spoiler (but not really): If only three characters live, which three do you think they'll be? Muahahah! Now, you're going to have to read the entire title in a day. You can thank me later.

I thought Ms. Soule did an exceptional job pulling-off the first person, present-tense narration. By choosing to narrate through Skylar, and getting backstory tossed in with Skylar's dreams, I felt it was quite effective. I also enjoyed the plethora of conflict. The characters were ALL flawed, and ALL tortured. I suppose that is one of the reasons I liked this title so much: the characters all had a deep-seated need for redemption. None, however, were as clear-cut as Dorian's. It was painful to watch Dorian's suffering from Skylar's point-of-view. We never got a glimpse inside Dorian's head to see what he was thinking. We never got to see what he did after Skylar left. This is one thing that I thought was difficult as a reader, because I felt more of a connection with Dorain than I did with Skylar.

Overall, I really liked and connected with Ms. Soule's Immortal Eclipse. I felt she did an exceptional job with her character development, and the writing was tight, descriptive, and even humorous in difficult situations. Her plot lines were clean and well-developed in most cases. I'd definitely pick up another title by this author.

As a lone wolf, and an alpha, Elaine Hawthorn doesn’t need a mate to control her and tell her what to do. Even worse, they share a history only she seems to remember, and if he discovers who she is, and the reason for her visit to Scotland, she might lose her family’s hidden treasure before she can find it.

Cearnach MacNeill is a seasoned warrior, an alpha wolf in his own right, and second-in-command of his entire clan. He is respected and sometimes feared, and when the American she-wolf who ran him completely off the road defies him at every turn, he’s dumbfounded. And more than a little intrigued. But, something else is bothering him about the sexy brunette who can’t seem to stay away from him any more than he can her, and he won’t let her go until he knows exactly what that means for him and his family.

One thing that’s been true of every Heart of the Wolf novel I’ve read so far is that they’re fun stories, and this one’s no exception. Cearnach is everything you’d expect a “Highland Wolf” to be: he’s sexy, strong, won’t hesitate to defend his clan, and is charmingly arrogant enough to get his way most of the time. However, that’s what makes it so entertaining when Elaine, who’s also an alpha, insists on doing things her own way. It’s a common device in this series, but one that I never tire of. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Cearnach scrambling to regain his footing, and as a female wolf, Elaine is as tough as he is and knows exactly what she’s doing.

Another good thing about these shifters is that, although they resemble humans a lot of the time, their inner animal is always close to the surface. Their wolves govern them in most aspects of their lives, and there’s a wildness to them that adds to their allure. It also makes these wolves pleasantly frisky, and leads to some very sexy moments between Cearnach and Elaine. These wolves mate quickly and frequently, and the teasing they put each other through makes the sex itself even better. I especially like that, although they literally can’t conceal their desire for one another, Cearnach makes sure Elaine knows that winning her over is his highest priority, and that all the power in that aspect of their relationship belongs solely to her. He isn’t just aware that she’s in control; he wouldn’t have it any other way.

While A Highland Werewolf Wedding is primarily a romance, there is also plenty of action to keep the story moving at a steady pace. Ms. Spear includes plenty of chases and suspense, and although a happy ending is never really in doubt, there’s enough of a threat that it feels nice to root for the good guys.

Each novel in the Heart of the Wolf series can easily stand on its own without losing anything to a lack of familiarity with the previous stories. Ms. Spears’ wolves are heroic and stubborn, amusing and loving, and it’s a lot of fun to just follow along wherever the story leads. Elaine and Cearnach may be my favorite pairing to date, their indisputable chemistry and playfulness adding just the right amount of edginess to the story’s unapologetically romantic intent. I have loved all the MacNeill brothers so far, and since theirs is such a large clan, am hoping for more from them soon.

A magical weekend, a breathless declaration, a happy ever after... Right?

When Malcolm Kavanagh took his first step toward emotional maturity by declaring his love to Owen Watson, that was just the first chapter in their story. Anyone who’s ever been in love knows that happy endings take a lot more work than that.

One problem: Malcolm has never been in love. He doesn’t know the rules of a relationship and isn’t confident enough to trust that his is real. He learns the ropes by sharing his life and his flat with Owen, but relationship boot camp proves a challenge. Everything is a struggle, from accepting Owen’s low-status job to putting his boyfriend above his personal trainer.

Luckily, Owen knows a little more about relationships, and labors patiently to survive the first six weeks of their life together. From the art galleries of Cambridge to the tawdry majesty of the Dominion theatre, Owen adapts to England while Malcolm adapts to the whole human race. Maybe, if Owen is patient enough and Malcolm learns to give, the two of them can make it past Relationship Armageddon to a real happy ending.

What B is talking about:

As a fan of M/M Romance, I was very excited to have the chance to review both Country Mouse and City Mouse at the same time. As there is no significant time lapse between the two stories, they are perfect companion pieces, and it was a real pleasure to see both characters make their way from a passionate, impulsive, fairytale beginning through the more weighty strains of trying to live with the person they love.

In Country Mouse, we meet Owen Watson, an American on his own in London for the first time, and Malcolm Kavanagh, a British stock trader/occasional Dom with posturing issues. Owen’s liberal, open upbringing has given him an endearing honesty and confidence that is impossible to resist, as Malcolm quickly discovers. Malcolm, on the other hand, lives in a world where appearances are everything, and he’s become so good at maintaining a pretense of control that he can usually make himself believe it. That is, until he meets Owen.

I absolutely loved Owen, and eventually Malcolm, too, but that’s the idea, I think. Malcolm keeps the best parts of himself hidden, whereas Owen doesn’t hide who he is at all. From the moment they meet, Owen pokes through Mal’s carefully constructed façade, keeping him so off balance that the warmer, softer, more vulnerable side of himself, the one Mal thinks he can’t afford to reveal, shines through. And it’s that man, the one behind the bluster and expensive suits that captures Owen’s heart.

Of course, Owen and Malcolm initially get together under the premise of hooking up, and I am happy to say that they are exceptionally good at it! Even from their first encounter, their personalities are apparent, and very much a part of how they play off one another whether in bed or out of it. While the scenes are highly enjoyable and very explicit, what I liked best about them was seeing Mal give more and more of himself over to Owen, and Owen proving that he’s strong enough to keep Mal together through it all. It’s a nice situation all around, and Ms. Lane and Mr. Voinov comfortably maneuver what was intended to be a temporary thrill into much more.

By the time Owen and Malcolm should have said goodbye to one another, their story becomes something entirely different than either anticipated. Malcolm, stuffy, image-conscious, and afraid, discovers that what he wants most will take a leap of faith, and that, surprisingly, he’s up to the task. In one insanely romantic act, he questions everything about the person he thought he wanted to be, and, in the process, changes the course of both their lives.

City Mouse, by contrast, begins with a day or two of feigned food poisoning followed by a crash landing back into the “real life” version of Malcolm’s world. Neatly divided into seven chapters (one for every week leading up to “Relationship Armageddon,” and another that will decide whether there will be a good ending or a tragic one), it is the exploration of what occurs when Malcolm and Owen attempt to merge their lives into a lasting happily ever after.

Although Malcolm is slightly older than Owen, it is Mal that has the most growing to do in order to keep Owen by his side, and his fear of sabotaging their relationship is so pervasive that it nearly ruins everything. As the weeks tick by, both men learn a lot about the difficulties of making a relationship work when even the lure of phenomenal sex can’t always compete with the realities of utter exhaustion. There are so many obstacles in their way, mostly self-induced, in Malcolm’s case, that the sense of impending doom both men suffer from seems perfectly legitimate. But, the sweetness of their time spent together, whether watching a show, eating a meal, or waking up together brings all the noise of those conflicts to a standstill, leaving behind nothing but a longing for what they could have with each other. These scenes are lovely, and some of my favorite throughout the story.

The extension of their time together also leaves more opportunities for them to explore each other’s sexual inclinations. Mal is definitely the more adventurous of the pair, and in the earlier part of City Mouse he teaches Owen plenty. I won’t spoil any of the naughty fun, but it’s worth noting that Mal likes to play, and has quite a few kinks to work with. Owen, fortunately, isn’t afraid to experiment, making this one amazingly steamy read. I tend to avoid using the phrase “hot” with regards to sex scenes, if possible, but that’s simply what these are—and then some.

Country Mouse and City Mouse were both a lot of fun to read, and I loved them so much that I’ve bought them for my permanent collection. Read together, they satisfy a more frivolous desire for a love-at-first-sight kind of romance, as well as providing the satisfaction that comes from watching two people fight for one another and the love that they were lucky to discover. Owen and Mal are great characters, Owen for his generosity and ability to see people for who they really are, and Mal for trying so hard to be a better version of himself. Toss in those amazingly hot scenes the two get up to, and these stories are definitely keepers.

I have an unbidden love for Blush, the first in Lauren Jameson's new trio of titles surrounding rich guys that share ownership of a BDSM club near Vegas. While my logical brain says, “Um, WTH?” my heart has a bookmance going on with this story.

With that stuff out of the way, I have to tell you why my heart has a 'thing' for Blush.

I read this title in ONE EVENING. I even made dinner (yes, a real dinner, not picking up pizza or making box mac & cheese), ran laundry, helped with homework, and nursed a sick child. There's some serious internal conflict for our leading lady, Maddie; this conflict keeps Alex at arms-length, until secrets that have the potential to tear them apart are revealed. Wrap it up with some stellar external conflict, predicted earlier in the title, and tie off with a gorgeous red happily-ever-after bow. Mmmhm. That is Blush. HEAT INDEX: 3.5 out of 5. Sweet & spicy story.

I liked Maddie as a main character. I like her sassy-ness, and I like the fact that even though she's messed up in the head, she thinks before she acts. Even when it comes to signing a D/s contract for the hottest dude ever born. Even when Maddie doesn't think she deserves to be with Mr. Hottie Alex, she uses calming strategies to suck out the anxiety she feels. Let me tell you, I can totally identify with Maddie. Mr. VampBard is my anxiety sucker. I liked Maddie as a charcter, but I think that she could have been better developed, with more details about her at the end. When you read the last chapter and the epilogue, you'll understand. It's almost as though I'm waiting for the rest of the story. Ms. Jameson could be wrapping up Maddie & Alex's story in her next title of the series, however.

Alex is the billionaire-du-jour. I must admit that I'm a bit smitten by his ability to complete tasks and how he seems to love so completely, and with assurance. I fell in love with the way Alex portrayed a D/s relationship. How gentle he was with Maddie. How he seemed to worship her. It's all about TRUST. And, after all, isn't that what ALL relationships should be built upon?

One of the most awesome things about this title is that neither party appears to be coerced into divulging things about themselves before they're really ready.

While Blush, on the surface, seems to be another stab at the 50 bandwagon, it really isn't in the same category. With healthy relationships, boundaries clearly established, and a female lead character that has a set of steel cajones, I am totally in a bookmance with this title simply because it's REAL.

NOTE: There are a couple things in the NetGalley version that I read that really troubled Ms. Nit-Picky-English-Teacher. I mean **really** bothered. There were many usage errors, left-out words, as well as one significant (for me, anyway) inconsistency in the plot, that I was annoyed enough to go back and fact-check for consistency myself. I based my rating of the book trusting that one last pass by an eagle-eyed editor will snagged these issues.

What I’m talking about:

Wounded Angel opens like a playful game of cat and mouse. We are introduced to Ella who is hiding deep undercover, running from something in her recent past. She's leery of everyone, but for some reason can't help herself control when it comes to her new client at the gym, Nate da Luca. Meanwhile, Nate is searching for someone, and he thinks Ella may be his prey. In the beginning, I can't tell if Nate is going to be the good or bad guy, and it’s a mystery as to why he’s hunting down Ella. What we do know is that he's experiencing a very strong attraction to Ella, regardless of who she may or may not be.

The opening of the story captured my interest quickly. I honestly couldn’t tell if Nate was good or bad, based on the story alone (although it is clear from the book blurb, he’s the hero). Ms. Gail reveals pieces of Ella and Nate’s shared past in little chunks, hooking the reader and driving them to learn more. It’s well played and makes for an exciting read. Even after the reader (and Ella) finds out Nate is good, the story remains suspenseful enough that I just couldn’t put down the book.

I like both main characters. Ella is spirited and a fighter. She survived a horrible ordeal and a messy aftermath only to come out stronger. Although she is pretty much alone, she’s found two trust-worthy friends at her place of employment. They help train and protect Ella so she’ll not be a victim again. So I found it a bit odd that Ella refused to trust the instincts of her comrades when they warn her something is up with Nate. I found Ella to be immature when she refused to be careful, which seemed against her character up to that point in the story. However, in the end, although their concerns were spot on, it all works out for the best.

Nate is a bit more difficult to follow and characterize. He knows what he is: a descendant of the Nephilim. But due to his mother’s crazy actions, he has been mentally and physically scarred. He’s lost most of his special abilities and is plagued by bizarre nightmares and waking dreams. I found the dream part a little confusing and odd for a while, which made reading a little difficult. However as the story progressed, all of the pieces fell into place. It took a few “ah-ha” moments until I had a better understanding of the big picture.

Together, the pair had good chemistry, but I found their banter detracted from the heat of the moment. Their first time felt awkward to me, but the intent was positive; both Ella and Nate admitted to and gave into their attraction. The big thing: Ella trusts Nate, which moved the story forward.

Wounded Angel is another entertaining story in the Earth Angels series. I am fascinated with the series mythology revolving around human descendants of Nephilim. I really liked that we got to see the Nephilim working together as a unit (via internet), bringing back the h/h from the earlier stories. It helped keep the overall story arc cohesive. I liked the slow reveal of the "bad guy," but am left wondering why he's so bent on destroying all of the Nephilim. Is it simply because they can potentially defeat him? I am eager to find out more…

I enjoyed both Ella and Nate. Individually they both were interesting characters and both underwent substantial emotional growth in the short timeframe. I adore how they realized that only together and in their mutual love could they overcome the evil. It was very touching. Their union/love also allowed for much of that emotional growth I mentioned. I do feel that their sexual chemistry felt a little flat. Their scenes were smexy, but I just didn't feel as deep of a connection as I wanted to. I think some of that was the silly banter. But in the end, their love felt natural and unforced.

Overall, I recommend Wounded Angel and the Earth Angels series… Interesting, exciting and sexy!

Before I begin, I’d like to thank Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About for letting me chat about my paranormal series, The Earth Angels, and its latest installment, WOUNDED ANGEL, releasing May 27th. Thanks so much, Jen!

Confession—I’m crazy about the paranormal. From the time I was nine years old and picked up my first Stephen King novel, I’ve been in love with the idea of the supernatural hiding in our seemingly ordinary world. I’m also hooked on mythology and folklore. Fuse these two loves with my romantic heart, and you’ve got the four-part Earth Angels series!

When I sat down to outline the overall story arc of The Earth Angels, I started by putting the spotlight on my favorite heroic types—the haunted superhero, the dedicated but emotionally isolated soldier, the broken/powerless survivor, and the lover-turned-fighter. I wanted my heroes to be as different from each other in personality as possible, despite the fact that their powers spring from the same source. And what source would that be?

Why, the Nephilim, of course. ;)

Right about now some of you are asking, what are the Nephilim? *dons scholarly mortar board* According to biblical text, the Nephilim were angel-human hybrids considered to be “heroes of old.” But another ancient text, The Book of Enoch, claims they were the bad guys in the eyes of heaven. Question is, which is true?

Truth be told, no one knows. That’s why I wanted to use the Nephilim mythology as a basis for this series. As I mapped out each character (FYI, I do character essays/backstories on each MC before plunging into the story itself) it was exciting to watch them define themselves through their actions. Yes, the angelic DNA screws with their otherwise-human lives. And it’s definitely a drag to believe a celestial smiting is how you’re going to kick the bucket. But when these super-powered, almost-human beings find love, they move heaven and earth to protect those who make their lonely lives complete, while fighting to make their world a safer place.

And oh, do they fight. In the first book, NOBODY’S ANGEL, the hero and heroine struggle to stay alive while we get a fleeting glimpse of something evil. In SAVAGE ANGEL, the nature of that evil begins to take shape while the two protagonists discover strength in trusting each other. In my latest release, WOUNDED ANGEL, the enemy finally steps into the light, while the H/h help each other overcome scars from their pasts (special thanks to my psychologist buddy, Dr. Patti Metzger, PhD, for helping me understand PTSD. This book wouldn’t have been written without her expertise). And I can’t even talk about how it all winds up in the fourth and final book in the series, DANGEROUS ANGEL (out 3/31/14, published by Carina Press).

Throughout each of these stories, the strength of loyalty and love are put to the test. While super powers help when it comes to the war between good and evil, the all-too human ability to love—and to sacrifice everything for it—will always be the unconquerable force that wins the day.

Kate Douglas's Sprit Wild series is a promising beginning to what could potentially be one of the most beautifully written and smokin' hot series debuting this year. Dark Wolf was erotic, tender, and intimate. Yet, it was exhilarating, and provided the reader with an adrenaline rush at the apex of the plot arc. HEAT INDEX: 4.75 out of 5... Um. Wow!

What I found most intriguing about Ms. Douglas's writing was the fact that instead of focusing on the 'main couple' as most traditional romances do, she had two couples. Along with both couples, there was some definitely interesting sexual escapades! Keep in mind, the Chanku are pack animals. Primarily shifting to a wolven form, Lily, Alex and Annie had been pack mates – Lily and Alex from birth – and they 'knew' and loved one another. Just learning about his magically shifting side was Sebastian, who proved to be a fantastic hero for this story.

Set in San Francisco and Montana, the descriptiveness of the settings was breathtaking. Especially the Chanku 'home base' in Montana. The compound in which Lily's family, as well as Alex's parents, lived truly came alive for me. Practically every room in which the characters spent time was described so the reader felt as though they were a voyeur, intruding on a private conversation or intimate moment.

As far as the smokin' hot sexy time, um. Yeah. I think this book contained pretty much every combo. M/M, F/F, M/F, M/M/F...even one scene bordering on M/F/M/F that felt a little like tag-team wrestling. Even though there were multiple partners, there was definitely backstory that prepared the reader for this plot device. And these characters truly cared for one another. They were respectful of one another, and love and pleasure were the driving force behind the couplings/groupings.

The main conflict in the title involved the rape and murder of several women. The details aren't explicit, but I still felt as though I was connected to the events. I'm going to try to remain spoiler-free here.... While the events point to one person as the culprit, I vehemently fought against this conclusion. The only reason I can't give this beautifully written book five stars is because I thought that the conflict could have been developed a bit more; giving the reader more clues as to who the villain truly was. I felt as though the ultimate reveal was predictable, and could have easily had an extra twist or two that would have broken the title out of this pattern. But... not enough to detract from the over-all story for me.

Wolfies and leopards and mages – Oh my! Dark Wolf, debut title in the Spirit Wild series by Kate Douglas is definitely a hot read for paranormal fans! I'm definitely looking forward to the next title in the series, Dark Moon. Those that fall in love with the world of the Chanku can, fortunately, pick up Ms. Douglas's backlist Wolf Tales titles to keep themselves occupied until the next release in this spin-off series.

What Nima’s talking about:

At under 150 pages, Merger to Marriage, the second book in Addison Fox’s Boardrooms and Billionaires series is better classified as a novella. It’s the perfect happy ending for an afternoon at the pool, two taekwondo classes, or three when-are-they-ever-going-to-let-them-out-of-this-show-choir-rehearsal’s?! Unfortunately, it also means that there isn’t a whole lot here to review.

The Boardrooms and Billionaires series follows the three McBride sisters. Merger to Marriage focuses on the youngest sister, Mayson McBride whose natural instincts for visual composition make her the perfect person to lead the design department of their family magazine empire. The story starts with instant chemistry between Mayson and Holt Turner at the wedding of Mayson’s oldest sister Keira to one time business rival Nathan Cooper. While this can be hold its own as a stand-alone book, I was missing some of the McBride family background I suspect was in book one, Tempting Acquisitions (which I did not read). Mayson often justifies keeping Holt at arm’s length based on this background and even though we are aware of it, I felt very little connection to it.

I wanted more connection. I liked these characters. They were genuine and real to me, especially Holt who had some significant mommy issues. Even if the resolution of the problems she caused was a little predictable, it was fun to see it come to fruition.

Something I found odd was the lack of power and wealth displayed as assumed by the series title. This is a romance, no question, and that is where the focus is, but for a billionaire courting a magazine magnet, there were no helicopter rides, or outrageously expensive fashions. The most we got was some very pricey wine which was critical to Mayson and Holt’s initial meeting and a mansion in the country. If we’re going to have this kind of fantasy set-up, then flaunt it.

Addison Fox proved that she’s a good writer in her Alaskan Nights series, capable of creating wonderful interactions and relationships. The intimate scenes are sexy, well done. I would have been very happy to have another 150 pages, however, to add the overall depth that was lacking for me. What is there is good, liked it a lot. I just wanted more.

What G & U are talking about:

WARNING: Please note that the series this graphic novel is based on is an ADULT urban fantasy series. Sometime we can easily mistake a graphic novel for being an acceptable young adult genre, a comic book if you will. That is not the case. There are very serious adult themes that take place in this story that are not appropriate for young children.

Gikany and Una need to make sure you understand before reading our review: we are die-hard Briggs fans. We have read her books numerous times over. To us, seeing the graphic novel is a way to experience beloved stories in a new way.

We read the last novel, Alpha & Omega: Cry Wolf Vol 1 and we are not surprised that the graphics remain as they were in Alpha & Omega: Cry Wolf Vol 2. It would be odd to have a character look differently or have the world appear changed in the next installment. That being said, we are still disappointed that Bran looks so much older than we feel he is characterized. However, the other characters all feel true to character in their depictions. We enjoy the way the artist captures the moments from the storyline.

Although there are a few tweaks in the storyline in Alpha & Omega: Cry Wolf Vol 2 it remains true to the essence of the story. We are not surprised by the subtle differences simply because a different media cannot always convey the story the same way.

Gikany and Una thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in the graphic series of Alpha and Omega and we eagerly look forward to the next. If you are a Briggs fan – pick this up – it is a great way to enjoy an author in a new way.

What I’m talking about:

Rio is a human living among the paranormal in Bordertown, a place out of sync with the "real" world. When Rio accidentally witnesses the kidnapping of a little girl by a shady underworld figure, she turns to Luke Oliver for help. Known as the Dark Wizard of Bordertown, Luke is the only one who can protect Rio. However, as her twenty-fifth birthday approaches, Rio becomes the target of interest by multiple paranormal factions, including both Fae and Demon royalty. It takes all of Luke's control to not blow-up all of Bordertown while trying to protect Rio.

I absolutely enjoyed The Cursed! The opening two chapters drew me in completely as they painted an intriguing story filled with interesting new characters and concepts. Right away the reader is left wondering - what is the League of the Swan? What is Luke’s curse and why does the League seem interested? The journey of finding out the answers to these questions is exciting, action-packed and just plain fun!

As a couple, Rio and Luke are fabulous! Each had noticed the other for quite some time, but Rio backed off after Luke turned down her offer for coffee. Unknown to Rio, Luke wanted to say yes, but due to his curse, he felt the need to stay far way from (while secretly stalking) her. Once Rio turns to Luke for help, it doesn’t take long for the sparks to ignite. It cracked me up that within mere minutes of Rio and Luke meeting up, Luke was confessing how he wants her desperately (well, why and how he stayed away). He's got it bad for her and it made their interactions very entertaining (and super sexy!).

Both Rio and Luke have their secrets. Luke has his mysterious curse, the truth of which he eventually shares with Rio. But for the reader, the reveal was drawn out over several chapters, which made his condition extremely intriguing. For example, the reader learns that Luke has built walls around his heart and soul to avoid activating the curse. This captivated me, driving me to learn more.

Then there is Rio, an abandoned orphan, who knows nothing about her parents or where she came from. Yet that never mattered to Rio and, she was content working in Bordertown, making good friends and not bringing any attention to herself. However a few days before her twenty-fifth birthday, suddenly she’s gained the notice of several different paranormal factions each of which hint she’s more than a mere human. First there is Merelith, Fae royalty, who recognizes Rio upon first glance and hints she knows more. And there is Chance Roberts, a powerful and wealthy man of unknown origins. Finally, the League of the Black Swan, lead by the mysterious Maestro, have a vested interest in the choices Rio makes. Each of these characters and the groups they represent, add great value to the overall story. Their combined pieces create the whole for Rio, which is revealed to be a fabulous family secret.

Ms. Day divulges her mythology and the nuances of Bordertown via finely-tuned and streamlined world-building. She presents everything the reader needs to know to understand her new world, yet there is never an overload of information. The details create a rich, exciting place that begs to be explored. Her universe is a blend of traditional and new fantasy elements that make for a superb read.

As Rio and Luke come together, the heat factor rises tremendously. I loved the easy banter between the couple. They are serious and sexy, fun and witty. And I adore how crazy Luke is for Rio. The way he has to process and deal with his emotions makes for enjoyable entertainment. I laughed many times. For example, in Luke's own words:

“I don’t know how to have all these feelings. I know how to blow stuff up. You were hurting, and I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how, so I blew something up.”

Although the story is on the lighter side of the spectrum, there isn’t a shortage of depth. Both Rio and Luke experience positive character growth as they learn more about themselves and how to love one another. In addition, their passion is sizzling. At times the pair are needy and hungry and at others sensual and loving. Rio and Luke are two lost souls, and when they find one another, they make a whole.

In the end, The Cursed is extremely entertaining and the start to what promises to be an excellent new series from Ms. Day. The banter and character interactions are superb. The overall story is light and fun, but at times touching and poignant. The mythology of Bordertown and its denizens is thrilling and unique. Luke and Rio are a fun, sexy duo who have many adventures ahead. There is still so much to learn and explore in Bordertown, and I for one am very excited about this new series.

One thing I’ve learned about the When the Mission Ends series is that the central group of friends in the stories definitely falls within the “cursed” category. Plane crashes, vengeful mafia reprisals, stalkers, and so on plague these characters in every book. So much strife could easily overshadow both the relationships and suspenseful aspects of the story, but Ms. Snow gives her characters extraordinary fortitude and a believable and incredibly strong bond with one another that allows them to persevere through all the difficulties that come their way. These friendships are some of my favorite parts of Operation: Endurance, in particular, often being the primary source of levity in an otherwise sinister and unsettling tale.

Operation: Endurance is certainly the darkest of these stories I’ve read yet, and may not be for everyone based on that alone. Julie is being stalked by a serial rapist whose crimes are narrated from his perspective, and so, are very detailed and graphic. No mere puppet, this rapist thoroughly believes in what he’s doing. He sees himself, not as a victim, and therefore incapable of controlling his actions, but as a savior with a purpose and a death wish of his own.

While the crimes committed in Operation: Endurance are disturbing, there are plenty of highly suspenseful moments that push the story along at a brisk pace and kept me worrying a great deal for the main characters. Although I had my suspicions about the villain’s identity fairly early in the narrative, Ms. Snow introduced enough well rounded secondary characters that I second-guessed myself several times throughout the story. I was pulled back into the story again and again this way, and it served the additional purpose of giving these characters more layers to their personalities and making them seem more vibrant as a result.

Perhaps the strongest part of the story is the romance between Julie and Chris. They have both been through so much, and considering all the characters have been put through the wringer in some way or other, that’s saying quite a lot. Despite all the attempts they both make to shield themselves from the pain that would surely be caused by admitting their true feelings, they simply can’t resist one another. It is their shared, secret past, combined with the inevitable scars that are the mark of true survivors that makes them absolutely perfect for one another. Ms. Snow is very gifted when it comes to erotic tension, and when Julie and Chris finally give in to their mutual desire, she absolutely delivers.

When the Mission Ends is a great series, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know these characters. While the graphic nature of the rape scenes was a bit too strong for my tastes, I appreciate that they were necessary in order to create a monster like the one in this story. Julie and Chris are one of my favorite pairings so far, and I enjoyed seeing them make their way back into each others’ hearts tremendously. Operation: Endurance is an important addition to the series, and I was more relieved than I thought I’d be to see hints about the next novel. I’m not sure what else might be in store for this resilient and devoted group of friends, but I’m excited to find out.

What I’m talking about:

Shifter Agatha McClure, aka Aggie, is the only daughter of Desmond McClure, the powerful alpha of the Midtown wolf pack. Desmond is making changes at home, to include leaving Aggie’s mom and mating with a new wolf, one that will produce an heir to take over the pack someday. In addition, he’s also declared it is time for Aggie to marry, introducing to Aggie her intended, Victor. Not one to take things lying down, Aggie refuses to just sit back and marry Victor until she gets to know him better. Unfortunately for Aggie, it isn’t until after she marries Victor that she finds out he’s not the man she hoped he’d be.

While reading the first two books in Ms. Madison’s Coveted series, I’d grown rather fond of Nat’s best friend, Aggie. But after reading Bitter Disenchantment, I’ve learned to love Aggie. She is one tough wolf and full of amazing fortitude. She never complains and learns when to pick her battles, especially with her father and her husband. She stays focused on what is important, but remains flexible enough to roll with the punches (literally!). I hope that Ms. Madison pens another tale from Aggie’s POV.

Both Desmond and Victor are devilish antagonists. Desmond’s cruelty is overtly dominant, while Victor hides behind a polished exterior. The pair are beyond controlling, attempting to bend the world and people around them to their individual wills. They are so easy to hate, which makes me cheer for Aggie even more.

Overall, the story is well written. The author does a fabulous job chronicling the degradation of Aggie's marriage and hopes. The means by which Aggie chooses to escape is an interesting one, and it goes to show how desperate she's become. I enjoy her interactions with fellow fighter, Paula and Paula’s children-it shows what a good, kind and caring person Aggie is.

In addition to the primary storyline of Aggie’s efforts to break free from her husband, there is a mysterious group of spellcasters after her. Although this is a minor thread, it has just enough meat to add some intrigue.

In the end, Bitter Disenchantment is a wonderful novella with a lot of substance. The story has an emotional edge and depth that had me shedding a few tears. I enjoyed the themes of overcoming odds and creating friendships, and about allowing someone else to fight for you once and a while. The story has a lot for being a shorter book. Friendship, betrayal, love and loss. Excellent story.

So. I read Wuthering Nights. It took me a while to get in to the story, even though I've read Wuthering Heights multiple times. Either it wasn't the right time for a revisit to Heathcliff and Catherine, or I **really** missed some of Ms. Bronte's descriptions. Maybe what I missed was the fact that my imagination has probably conjured up some fervent fantasy about Heathcliff.

However, this title was seriously hot! However, the sex was used as an instrument for revenge & manipulation which was NOT ok with me, and is the primary reason for the lower rating. I did, however, like the introduction and conclusion of the story, but I felt that the author could have done much more with it.

Catherine and Heathcliff are the consummate romantic couple; star-crossed lovers on-par with Romeo & Juliette. If you've read the original and you're ready for the male-dominated play in this version, keep this read for home with no one else around. Blush alert!

Kind-of difficult to write an extended review of a spin-off from a piece of classic literature. I feel as though I'm critiquing the work of Ms. Bronte. However, I must say that I liked the vein in which the plot ran. I suggest to those who have not read Ms. Bronte’s classic, read the SparkNotes online for Wuthering Heights before reading this title. I think it makes it more meaningful to compare & contrast. And appreciate the described male physique of Heathcliff... **le sigh**

Feed Readers...

As most of you know, earlier this year Google announced that it was closing the doors on its feed reader, Google Reader. On July 1, 2013, those of us that use Google Reader as a means to capture posts from all of the blogs we "follow," will no longer have that service. I rely heavily on Google Reader to keep me up to date with my favorite authors and review blogs. I also use it to follow friend and family blogs. There is no way I'd be able to keep up with each of these sites if I had to visit each one separately.

I have purposely been avoiding the news and panic, knowing that eventually someone would find a good alternative and figure out how to transfer the feeds. So now that July 1 is approaching, I thought I'd reach out to you all for some help!

For those of you that subscribe to some sort of feed reader service...

What service do you use? What are the pros and cons of that service?

Did you transfer your feeds from Google Reader? If so, how did you accomplish this and was it difficult?

Where do you access your feed reader (via computer, phone, tablet, etc.)? I currently only use my laptop to read feeds and blogs.

What Nema is talking about:

Samantha Young delivers a great stand -alone romance novel that is part of the On Dublin Street Series. Even though this book was a spin off her best-selling novel On Dublin Street, this novel stands on its own and will appeal to all Young's fans and new readers.

The Good: As a fan of On Dublin Street, I had great expectations for this book. Even though I loved the first book and I would have loved a sequel for it, I was very pleased with a spin-off of a minor character in book one. I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised when a character that I had no connection to, developed into a strong character with an interesting story to tell. Down London Road is a well written, character-driven novel. The romance is central to the plot but you are in for an emotional struggle. I even shed a tear or two.

The Bad: The plot is not complex but it had a little too many conflicts. I would have liked to see maybe two conflicts and see them be resolved slowly than seeing all the conflicts resolve on their own. The book could have had a very strong-female theme but the heroine left a few things up to fate and everything was tied up nicely. I thought was a little weak, but again, that didn't stop me from loving the story.

The Ugly: The interaction in between the characters from Down London Road and On Dublin Street seemed very forced to me. If you have not read On Dublin Street, you probably won't even notice, but for me, it felt unrealistic and flat. Given that this book was a spin off, I think the author felt force to please the old readers by giving little glimpses of the well-loved characters from On Dublin Street, but for me it was distracting and annoying. Every time they came into view, they stole the show for the lead couple in Down London Road.

Overall Down London Road is a quick read with a lot of chemistry. A great contemporary romance, full of sexual tension that will leave the reader wanting for more.

What I’m talking about:

Our story opens with Seth (aka Tecumseh), who is a caretaker of sorts for lost souls. He is the Crow of legend, leading a solitary and lonely life. In order that his own soul does not fill with darkness, he needs to find his mate. Knowing this, him mom and brother ambush Seth and set him up on a date via Madame Eve’s 1 Night Stand (1NS) because his brother Kam had much success with the dating service.

After a history of abuse, Lucy feels awkward around men and is not comfortable with her own sexuality. She hopes that Madame Eve and 1NS can help her overcome her fears and maybe find something she feels is missing from her life.

Crow Magic is a story filled with spirituality and self-awareness. The author uses Native American culture and beliefs to spin her own tale of romance centered around inner peace and freedom. While I found much of the culture presented entertaining, at times I felt the spirituality of the story was heavy-handed and overshadowed the romance.

In the beginning of the book, Lucy finds herself alone with an attentive crow at the secluded resort. She begins a dialogue with the alert bird that was a bit goofy and silly. Personally, I'd be freaking out if a crow pulled out my hair band and stared at me. However, after a while, her odd behavior is attributed to a history of abuse and the scene makes more sense in that light.

The overall “courtship” between Seth and Lucy was based on her spiritual and sexual awakening. Seth uses his powers to free her mind and body, allowing her to become centered and at peace with her own self. Because of this, I felt that the story wasn’t very romantic in the traditional sense of the genre. However, Seth realizes almost immediately that his connection to Lucy is deeper than that of previous charges, so he pursues her more intimately.

Overall, Crow Magic is an enjoyable story with an interesting concept. It is filled, and at times overfilled, with spiritual awakening, using sex as part of the process. The connection between the primary couple isn't as steamy as in other 1NS stories, because the focus of the relationship is equally physical and spiritual. I liked that Lucy was able to shed her past and let out the awakened spirit inside of her. I think that those with an interest in Native American culture will enjoy this novella; however, if you are turned off by spirituality, you probably won't like the novella as much.

Time Thief is the debut novel in the new Traveller series. Overall, Gikany and Una enjoyed this campy paranormal romance with some detective drama on the side.

Maybe it is the similarities that Una has to the heroine, Kiya, but the light-hearted and rambling dialogue did not frustrate us during our read. It is actually quite comical to see our heroes, Peter and Kiya, go completely off topic bantering while in pressing danger. It reminds us of those silly slap-stick comedies we loved as we were growing up. The characters are in many ways stereotypical and occasionally lacking depth… but oddly it adds to the story rather than detracts. We feel it is because there are the one dimensional “bad” or “evil” characters, the one dimensional “good” characters and then there is a group of one dimensional characters that could be good or could be bad – we just aren’t sure. With this variety, it allows the reader to suspend reality and just enjoy the story.

The world that Time Thief takes place in is an interesting one. We found the idea of the Traveller intriguing along with the usual cast of “otherworldlies”. The mythology is not terribly complex but it is fascinating in regards to Travellers – we are quite ignorant on the subject. The existence of the Watch and their role in this alternate world is not surprising. However, how they work is a little strange. Also, Gikany and Una have to question the training program their agents endure since there were moments we had to question Peter’s powers of observation and his ability to connect the dots. Yet again, these little “elements” add to the relaxed and light-hearted feel of the novel. We would say it is akin to situational comedies like Friends, Three’s Company, Frasier, etc.

Although the mystery in Time Thief was very easy to figure out, we doubt anyone would have imagined the convoluted way our heroes finally figure it all out and save the day. Suffice to say, it is pretty funny as they all bumble around with the clues being fairly obvious. But the mystery is not the focal point. The crazy romance between Peter and Kiya is the main driving force. Gikany and Una had a difficult time in classifying this new series. We are unsure of what the next book holds, but we were torn between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Due to our statement above, we feel this is a paranormal romance series and should be delightful to anyone looking for an irreverent, paranormal detective romp.

Time Thief is a quick and fun read for anyone looking for light literature – something to while away an afternoon or evening. We would also recommend it as a break between the more gritty urban fantasies. Gikany and Una found this series to be a bit refreshing and look forward to the next novel in the Traveller series.
