Battery drain investigation in iOS 5.0

In this article I am investigating how “Ping” and “App Store” applications have influence on the iPhone battery. My goal is to indicate the impact with the help of digits.

Components and versions used in this article:

iPhone: 3GS
iTunes: 10.5
iOS: 5.0 (iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw)

1. Initial iPhone Setup

1.1 Update iPhone in DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode:

Open iTunes and connect the iPhone
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode
The iPhone screen will remain black
Follow iTunes instructions

1.2 Make the following settings:

Settings - Wi-Fi - Off
Settings - Notifications - In Notification Center - AppName - Notification Center - Off
Settings - Location Services - Off
Settings - Brightness - Auto-Brightness - Off
Settings - Brightness - 50%
Settings - General - About - Diagnostics & Usage - Don’t Send
Settings - General - Usage - Battery Percentage - On
Settings - General - Network - Enable 3G - Off
Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data - On
Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data Network - Cellular Data - Setup
Settings - General - Bluetooth - Off
Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Fetch New Data - Push - Off
Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Fetch New Data - Fetch - Manually
Settings - Messages - iMessage - Off

1.3 Restart iPhone:

Turn off (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, slide your finger across the slider)
Turn on (press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears)

1.4 Reset iPhone.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

2. Battery drain calculation

All tests except 1 and 2 should be performed in the same physical (geographical) place in order to guarantee the same quality of a cellular signal.

2.1 Calculate battery drain in Airplane mode

Settings - Airplane Mode - On
Settings - General - Restrictions - Ping - On
Settings - Store - Sign Out
Remove all current applications from Task Bar
Charge the battery till 100%
Remove a charger
Don’t use iPhone for several hours

2.2 Calculate battery drain in Airplane mode when Ping is off

Settings - Airplane Mode - On
Settings - General - Restrictions - Ping - Off
Settings - Store - Sign Out
Remove all current applications from Task Bar
Charge the battery till 100%
Remove a charger
Don’t use iPhone for several hours

2.3 Calculate battery drain in Standby mode

Settings - Airplane Mode - Off
Settings - General - Restrictions - Ping - Off
Settings - Store - Sign Out
Remove all current applications from Task Bar
Charge the battery till 100%
Remove a charger
Don’t use iPhone for several hours

2.4 Calculate battery drain in Standby mode when App Store is signed in

Settings - Airplane Mode - Off
Settings - General - Restrictions - Ping - Off
Settings - Store - Sign In
Remove all current applications from Task Bar
Charge the battery till 100%
Remove a charger
Don’t use iPhone for several hours

3. Calculation results

	Test period (hours)	Battery percentage after the test	Approximate drain speed (percents per hour)
1. Airplane Mode with Ping On	6	89	~ 1.8
2. Airplane Mode with Ping Off	6	100	< 1
3. Standby mode when App Store is signed out	6	99	< 1
4. Standby mode when App Store is signed in	6	92	~ 1.3

It may be said that “Ping” should be always off and the “App Store” should be always signed out if you want to reduce the iPhone battery drain.

How to set up Mozilla Thunderbird with OpenPGP

This post is intended to provide safe settings for Mozilla Thunderbird when it is necessary to use PGP (GPG) encryption.

Used software:

GPG
Mozilla Thunderbird (3.1.8)
Enigmail Add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird (1.1.2)

Let us suppose all mentioned tools and programs are already installed. And all we need is to make correct settings.

It is necessary to turn off Auto Save for messages. This will help to avoid saving of unencrypted messages as drafts.

We need to modify account settings as well.

Change Copies and Folders. This setting correlates with Auto Save.

Turn of composing messages in HTML format.

Do not keep messages on local computer. This rule can be omitted if Mozilla Thunderbird Profile is located in safe storage like encrypted volume.

Enable OpenPGP support.

To get such a video we need salt, water, simple microscope (100x) and camera.
Here are easy steps to reproduce:
1. Make saturated solution of salt in the water.
2. Put a drop of solution on object-plate.
3. Take a shot of the drop through microscope every one second within five minutes.
4. Compose video from taken shots (25 frames per second).

Для получания такого видео необходимы соль, вода, простой стократный микроскоп и фотоаппарат.
Последовательность шагов:
1. Сделать насыщенный раствор соли в воде.
2. Поместить каплю раствора на предметное стекло.
3. Фотографировать каплю через микроскоп каждую секунду в течение пяти минут.
4. Из полученных снимков составить видео (25 кадров в секунду).

Display resolution tricks for 1024x600 netbooks running on Ubuntu

Tested configuration: Asus EEE 901 with Ubuntu 10.10. Original resolution is 1024x600

- change resolution to 1280x750

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --panning 0x0 --scale 1.25x1.25

- change resolution to 1536x900

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --panning 0x0 --scale 1.5x1.5

- change panning to 1280x1024

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --panning 1280x1024  --scale 1x1

- change panning to 1024x768

- restore resolution and panning
